88 Optical Hester - Eyewear & Opticians Near Me - New York, New York

I recently did a lens replacement for some high quality sunglasses for which I needed a prescription change. Besides placing the same SPH in both eyes although I showed them an Optometrist prescription that asked a different SPH for each eye, I just checked the "refurbished" sunglasses UV protection with the UV flashlight test and the $20 bill. Although they told me the tinted lenses would have UV blocking protection, these lenses FAILED the UV blocking test. I would be damaging my eyes if I would keep using them!!!! This place is not cheap; they are a FRAUD. Even 5 dollars Amazon clear readers block UV 100%. 90 dollars wasted (plus my time) at Optical 88 read more

Amazing value for quick turnaround time and excellent service. Came here to get some prescription lenses installed into some sunglasses I bought at a fancy grocery store down the road. $85 got me a colored tint plus some strong lenses. No service fee, no hassles, no surprise costs, no upselling. They were ready within the next day or two and both the man who answered my inquiry through the phone and the chill middle-aged women were understanding, to the point, and laidback. Will be back again for anything up and down glasses, they've set the bar high seemingly in an effortless way! read more

Sales is when you see the happy and best behaved faces. When glasses need to be fixed as the lens fell off after wearing it only for 5 times (as they are cheap quality), one gets to see the rude salespeople. They blame it on the customer handling of these glasses. so wanna cheap or pay more and get better quality. between all my trips back and forth and subway fares i could have gone to a high quality store. read more

Service is great.. Prices are reasonable. I will go back again and again! The salesperson was extremely helpful and honest. read more

The customer service from the sales people, technicians and optometrist is fantastic. They are kind, efficient, warm and accommodating. And when I ask for fashion advice they step up. Ty It feels like family been getting inexpensive high quality lenses . I never get lenses anywhere else! Quality at a reasonable price read more

We have been using them for all our eyeglass needs for over 15 year and have always been very pleased with the quality of the services, and pricing which is also very reasonable. We're tried other stores, and they don't compare by service or cost at 88. In addition, all of the staff is just so helpful and pleasant to deal with. If you don't live in the area, it's definitely worth a subway ride down. Sandy and Abe are wonderful to deal with. read more

This place is a complete scam. I went in to have my new eyeglass prescription filled, and they made the lenses the same day. Unfortunately, when I tried on the glasses, my vision was actually worse than with my old prescription--blurrier, not clearer. When I raised the issue, the salesperson suggested I see their in-house optometrist, implying my original prescription might be incorrect. I agreed, hoping this would resolve the problem. The optometrist said there was only a very minor difference from my original prescription but wrote a new one anyway. I assumed the store would replace the lenses using the updated prescription. Instead, the salesperson tried to convince me that the glasses I had already complained about were "fine" and that updating the lenses wasn't necessary. I was then charged for the eye exam. It was clear they were far more interested in collecting an exam fee than in correcting my vision. This place operates like an eyeglass mill--focused on selling cheap glasses as quickly as possible, whether they actually work or not. Don't waste your time or money here. Go to a reputable optician. You truly get what you pay for. read more

Always friendly and quality work. I love the family that owns it--I've been going to them for over 20 years for my contacts and my glasses.

Getting to that age where the eye doc said I need progressives. Went to some opticians on the Upper East and West sides and was quoted between $750 and $850 for the lenses alone Saw other helpers loved this place, so went out of my way to go there with an old pair of frames. They did a great job and charged only $380!!!! Plan some extra time when you visit so you can explore Chinatown a little. read more

Great value for quality lenses in a sea of overpriced optical stores trying to upsell you. Spent hundreds on frame+lenses and then spent $80 on frames+lens from an online discount store -- shockingly similar success for glasses on opposite ends of the spectrum. Then I went to 88 Optical to upgrade my new prescription in old frames that I brought in ($80 for lenses with blue-blocking coating), which have been my favorite glasses to use out of all my purchases. My eyes didn't need an "adjustment" period and they don't get strained. Also, I replaced lenses without a prescription in my favorite sunglasses -- recommend 88 Optical for all of it. Large selection of frames here, as well. No-nonsense and focused on efficiency rather than holding your hand. Best to come in knowing what you want. read more

To start with, let's get the name straight: it's "Optical 88", not what is listed. It's a fantastic place. The optometrists give a good eye exam. (My experiences with whomever does the eye exam for ophthalmologists is generally quite negative.) They provide excellent service, are highly skilled, friendly, and very polite. And, it's worth mentioning that they will put lenses in vintage frames, whereas many optical shops will not deal with them. I almost forgot, their pricing is not to be beat. read more

Came in on President's day. No wait surprisingly for me, so I lucked out I feel. 1. Repairs Need to replace a screw on pair of sunglasses and needed to fix bent metal for eye glasses Was NOT expecting it to be a free service and to be literally under 5 minutes. Guy there was very efficient, helpful and informative about the reality of the longevity of the bent glasses. (I deff regret getting a high end brand and will def avoid name brands for plastic frames in future- i didnt get my glasses from here) 2. Was hoping they offered strabismus services but unfortunately they dont have the equipment. No hassle, no grilling me if I was an existing customer. Will definitely come back when I need more standard services! Likely for my next replacement pair, plastic or not! Thank you 88 optical! read more

had a pair of glasses that needed a repair. 88 Optical Hester got it down in less than a couple of hours. prices are fair; the work is quality, and the service is thorough and fair. the owner and his team have a quality operation that puts the customer and quality first. if you need new glasses or a repair, then definitely stop by here. honestly you're a fool if you go to a retail optical chain store...i know this bc i am one of many fools who went to a retail optical chain first...and i regret not going to this Chinatown optical store first! read more

I love the doctor and getting my glasses done here. I've been doing it for years and years and years. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. They will even tune up my frames when they get all wobbly from wear. They are so rad. Love this place read more

The best. Courteous. High quality lenses. Progressives. Excellent fitting. Nice people.

The whole experience here is so reasonable - good service, affordable, and quick. There are not a lot of businesses that I would say that about these days. I always feel welcome, and I recommend them to everyone. You can get your eyes checked too! read more

Tsing was incredibly fast with my glasses! I brought my frames in along with my prescription on my lunch break and he completed it within an hour! He also suggested ultra thin lenses and I absolutely love them. Fantastic place, best prices and phenomenal customer service. Thank you so much, I will be back! read more

Looks incredible, service seems quick... I Wish I got something, watched a friend get some lenses. God bless em it was splendid... and I'll be honest the frames looked insane, none that I would want personally but who's to blame? Probably who buys em, im sure you'll like em, I'm sure if you go looking for a pair you like personally you'll find em. read more

Really great place- you can bring a pair of glasses and your prescription and they will get you your glasses next or same day. Very nice staff. read more

Highly recommend! I went there today. I lost one of the screws in my glasses and went to this place in hopes of fixing them. Excellent customer service --- they're friendly, professional and fast. They not only quickly replaced the screw but also tightened my glasses so they fit even better than when I bought them. I'm new to NYC. So glad I found this place. read more

I broke two glasses and didnt want to buy a new one so I've been trying to fix them. Went to a place by Union square and they immediately told me they cant fix my glasses. One of the customers overheard our conversation and suggested I check out optical 88. On my way here, my Uber driver also recommended optical 88 so I had my hopes up. Initially, the guy attending to me said my glasses can't be fixed but Abe took a closer look at my glasses and got creative. He didn't even charge me for fixing them but he's great. My glasses should hold up for now all thanks to Abe! read more

Came to get my sunglasses repaired. They were super kind and friendly and good prices. Highly recommend!

Purchased new Gentle Monster glasses and the employees recommended coming to 88 Optical to get them fitted with my prescription (they told me it would be $80) The actual cost for high index (1.67) lenses in 2019 is $160. If you want to save a little more you could pay $120 for 1.60 index lenses, but the standard in the current market is 1.67 so they have been marketing order lenses as their "high index lenses". If you want even thinner lenses, they will charge $260 for 1.74 high index lenses. (With anti glare and anti scratch coating) In terms of the quality, it's okay. I'm a little skeptical of whether or not I was given the 1.67 vs 1.60 but I guess I'd just have to trust them. read more

The staff here are not nice. When I went to get my eyes rechecked, I simply asked the eye doctor if there was any way my prescription could get better and before I even finished asking she said in a rude tone, "NO." She didn't even offer any preventive measures on not getting even worse eyesight. Did not even try to communicate with me. The staff behind the case was also not nice. When I came back another time to ask about my prescription, she had an attitude when all I asked for was some clarification about it. Definitely will not be coming back here. read more

Great speedy, friendly service at a good price. Recommend! I needed to get a pair of non-transitions glasses so I didn't look like I was wearing sunglasses at an outdoor performance. I brought in an ancient frame and Optical 88 put plain single vision lenses in the old frames. They work great! I can see distance with them better than with my expensive transitions progressives! read more

Walked right in today to fix my glasses. (Attempted to do it myself, but to no avail). Decided to give this place a shot given it's incredible reviews. Didn't disappoint! People behind the desk helped me right away and fixed my glasses within five minutes. I asked them how much and they said it was on the house! Obviously, I imagine they charge for other services. I'm planning on definitely coming back since eye exams are at about 35. Definitely come here if you want bang for your buck. Absolutely friendly, efficient service and the glasses place itself was clean and nice! read more

Pricey for what I'm used to (on public health insurance) because I'm generally an online glasses kind of gal, but COME HERE IF YOU JUST BROKE OR LOST YOUR GLASSES AND NEED SAME-DAY CUTTING OR LENS FITTING. This is like, my to-go emergency optician if I break or lose my glasses (which has happened to me 6-7 times in the last 12 years, yay for being autistic!). They also have nice frames if you're willing to pay more. In 2017, I came here after I lost my glasses. I am a tutor, work in EMS, need to drive, and basically can't be walking around blind while I wait for glasses to arrive to some other store or from an online service. (I also had ordered replacements online.) Their frames weren't cheap but and they don't accept Medicaid but I was in desperate need. They did same-day cutting for me for free, right before closing, and I'll never forget how grateful I was to have a pair of working glasses in my hand. They made a big show of how much they could custom-cut the lenses to match my Asian features and ensure that the "sweet spot of focus" matched my face shape, as opposed to online glass orders which are not able to do this. This turned out to be noticeably true, but not enough to dissuade me from ordering online for "nicer" frames (because I'm on public health insurance, okay?). In 2018, I also came here a second time to have lenses cut into a new frame. I'll still always love the second pair of frames I got from them from yet another emergency glass cutting. (Alas, I lost them a few months ago!) When I am in a better financial situation, I'm considering coming here to fit online polycarbonate lenses into an extremely impact-resistant and flexible pair of frames as currently, my frames tend to break before the lenses do. read more

The place that I get my frames (a vintage place) recommended them 20 years ago, and I've never gone anywhere else since. Not only are they speedy and half the price of anywhere else when it comes to lenses, they are magicians when it comes to repairing frames. There's nothing these guys can't do. I can't recommend them highly enough. They rock. read more
