Can I give twelve stars? Five years ago Victor put lenses into three pairs of eyeglasses and I was very impressed by his knowledge of the options and his patient dedication to finding something that worked for me and fit my budget. After not liking progressive lenses he made me some great bifocals with a round, barely noticeable, higher mag area in the bottoms of the lenses. Two weeks ago one of the arms of a pair of wire rim Morgenthaler Friedrichs glasses broke off and, to my surprise, I discovered that the manufacturer doesn't make replacement parts. ("Every pair is unique!" they said. More like they want you to buy a new pair) Brought them to Victor and Olga and they said that they would try to have it welded. Well, that wasn't possible--which was a good thing because instead they found new arms that fit and matched perfectly, and were of the flexible, virtually unbreakable kind to boot. $45! BTW, they have a nice selection of frames including vintage pieces. read more

Everything I posted before is still accurate and I'm even happier now. So I went back to the store after I somehow broke a pair of glasses I had had for years (from some other store). This was a pair of back-up glasses that I only wore at home after taking my contact lenses off. The wire frame broke off right at the nose, leaving me with two halves. Having had such a great experience at Unique Optique with a repair before, I brought in the broken glasses. This time I dealt with Olga. She said they could try to repair the frames, but that would cost $45 and she couldn't guarantee either how good it would look or how long it would last. But she also said that she thought that for $50 she could find some other frame that would fit my existing lenses. I agreed and left the broken frames behind so that she could look for frames that would fit that size lenses. She called a few days late to say that she had found a basic plastic frame that worked. I went back to pick up the glasses and they are great. I won't win any fashion prizes, but the new frames (plastic rather than wire) are at least as nice looking as what I had had before. And amazingly, Olga on her own volunteered that she was only going to charge me $40 rather than the $50 she had quoted. Can't beat that. I'm an even bigger fan than I was before. read more

I'm an avid collector of vintage sunglasses and have been coming to Victor to get them repaired, and lenses put in for many years. I used to go to his shop on 24th street and only recently discovered his 34th street location. I'm thrilled to have found him again, because I don't like the old shop since he left. Victor and his wife are very warm and friendly people, and he really knows his stuff. I have had lenses replaced, frames made tighter and also widened. He is careful to respect the authenticity of the frames I bring in, and finds different solutions to different types of problems and frames, and matches lens color very well, and carries a good selection. I love coming here for the friendly chat just as much as I like the job he does on the glasses. So glad there are mom and pop shops like this still existing in this real estate crazed city. read more

First it smell like pee in the entire spot ! Next the owners are rude and very nasty ! They didn't help me , they talked over me , they act as if they couldn't let me explain myself ! I asked why they couldn't fill my glasses they reply was they couldn't get my lenses until November ! Than when i asked if it's anything else the woman told me that i could pick up the frame but lenses wouldn't be in it . I told her what sense did that make . She than told me well and hung up in my face !! The worst place ! All they glasses dusty and dirty ! I only went because it was close to my house but PLEASE DONT. OT GO TK THIS OLD RUDE SMELLY PLACE !! It's the worse! They should literally close this place ! Worse ! read more

Unique Optique is a find! Years ago, New York magazine rated it highly and I thought of that review (as well as a respected friend's recommendation) when presented with a dilemna. I accidentally damaged one stem from a relatively new and pricey frame. Two local opticians (in the Bronx/ Westchester area) said I'd have to replace the entire frame, since the manufacturer didn't sell the stems independently. The aforementioned review had mentioned something about vintage frames, so I guessed Unique might have some spare parts saved from long discarded frames. I spoke with Olga, who suggested I stop by. She was able to find a pair of stems which were very close to the originals and charged me a pittance! (Thank you so much, Olga.) The almost-extinct personal touch this shop provides was well worth the drive into the city. It's my new go-to spot for future eyeglass purchases. As I said earlier, it's a find! read more

This optical shop is a gem! Was recommended by the wonderful vintage eyewear store Fabulous Fanny. The optometrist Dr. Berman is great, and very entertaining as well. Viktor crafts the lenses beautifully. I was hesitant about getting progressive lenses but they are the best and he did such a good job. Olga who runs the store is a sweetheart. Also excellent selection of frames. This is my new one stop shop for eye exams and glasses. Go! You will be glad you did. read more

Victor Vitkun owns Unique Optique. He is an older gentleman running a small shop, but that doesnt mean that he is lacking in service or hospitality. I purchased a few pairs of antique glasses from Fabulous Fannys a few weeks ago and took them to Victor last Thursday as he specializes in antique frames. Its monday and he has already cut and fitted the lenses for me. His work is amazing and is, as I am used to Lenscrafters pricing, an incredible deal. I wanted the unique octagon style that one of the frames originally came with, and the other to be a traditional but larger oval shape. So not only did he cut the lenses specifically for me, he also gave me anti-glare, transitions, anti-scratch, super light lenses, with a drilled hole for the earcuff for 200 per pair. The work is amazing, I am incredibly happy, and I will be going to Victors Unique Optique for all of my future vision requirements. read more

This is the best place I've found for filling prescriptions. I've had five glasses made there, as well as several adjustments. It has always been a great experience. Here's what has set it apart: - My first pair there were rimless, which can be kind of drag, involving prototypes and several visits. Victor got them right on the very first time. This was by a longshot the easiest pair of rimless glasses I'd ever had made. - A couple of my plastic frames were uncomfortable on the bridge, which is the sort of thing that can't be adjusted. Your nose either fits or doesn't fit. Victor shaved a few millimeters off each side to create more room and then polished the sides. Problem solved. Free of charge. - One of my frames were sunglasses not intended for prescriptions. The frame is big and my prescription is high, which make the lenses especially thick. Another place had already told me that I couldn't have them fit with prescription lenses. Victor somehow made it work. - And finally, Victor always tries to get lenses to your specifications as inexpensively as he can. The prices are significantly lower than at other places I've visited. Plus the service is quick. I've given up getting my prescriptions filled anywhere else. I can't recommend his shop highly enough. read more

Viktor is the sort of independent artisan that you so rarely come across these days. He's a true perfectionist when it comes to both the crafting of the lens and the fit of the frames on your face. He's now made three pairs for me, and at least as many for both my husband and brother. We won't bring our frames anywhere else. My prescription is something of a doozy, but he made lenses that looked great in extra skinny frames that I had picked out. And he always takes care to make the small adjustments to the frame that make it sit perfectly on your face. There's also the lightning quick turnaround time, and the fact that his prices are a steal. Before I came across Viktor, I was probably paying at least 50% more for my ultra thin lenses. And he knows how to make a loyal customer feel appreciated. For all those Warby Parker enthusiasts out there, why not consider real vintage as opposed to faux vintage, with lenses tailored exactly to your eyes by a true craftsman? It's still affordable, and the pair will be perfect, and will last so much longer than anything made in a Chinese factory. read more
