Dr. Dong is friendly and knowledgeable, and takes the time to explain what he's doing and why. He's thorough, patient and personable--sadly a rarity among healthcare providers. You're not pressured to order contacts or purchase glasses, but the admin does inform you of your benefits and how to use them here. It had been a couple years since I got my last set of glasses and I decided it was time to try someplace new, so I came here based on the Yelp recommendations. And true to form, Dr. Dong and his team were amazing! First and most important, he really took the time to make sure my prescription was right. Sometimes the question "better 1 or 2?" is really hard for me to answer and I have to go back and forth a few times to know what's best, and he was super patient and never made me feel like I had to rush it. Thank you for that! He also took the time to explain his process and how it's not just about getting the image in each eye as maximally sharp as possible but making sure there's a good balance between the eyes. This is so important because I've had glasses before from other doctors where I felt like I was cross-eyed wearing them, even though the vision through each lens by itself was fine. So getting a good balance between eyes is really important for me, and I'm glad Dr. Dong is on the same page there. And second, the rest of the team was super helpful, from the lady who did the intake to the people helping me pick frames at the end. If there's one theme it's that everyone was patient and took the time to make sure I was getting individualized attention. You really feel taken care of here. There's also a great selection of frames, so after trying about 8 different pairs I found something that suits me perfectly. Last but not least, Dr. Dong and his team are all as nice as can be. I'll be honest. When I saw the 4.5 stars on yelp I was very skeptical. "No way a glasses store can have this high of a rating, psh, how good can it be?" So I booked an appointment. And I really gotta say guys, Dr Dong is the nicest doctor I've ever met, actually he probably ranks in the top 5 in the "Nicest human beings I've ever met in my life" category. You think I'm exaggerating? Go see for yourself. Anyway, being nice is no good if the doctor is no good, but this one is nice AND good. He is so knowledgeable and thoroughly explains everything he's seeing and the potential issues/causes associated with the symptoms. For the whole appointment, I kept wondering why I didn't go to him him sooner. You see, my previous optometrists were kind of just....alright. They would test my eyes and send me away, and it was very routine. I thought all optometrists are like that, until I met Dr Dong. Great folks here! I was staying at a hotel around the corner and the lens popped out of my glasses. I had an important business meeting and was quite panicked Westside "saved the day", and couldn't have been nicer. I went over and on a day that NY got a lot of snow, and the very nice optician, fixed my glasses (it needed a replacement screw), cleaned the lens and wouldn't take anything for it. A+ for customer service. My insurance is beyond complicated, but Westside was totally great about making calls and really digging up how they can best help me. I was originally going to have my exam and get my glasses here, but it turned out that my insurance wouldn't cover the exam at this location. Westside was beyond understanding about the situation, which encouraged me to come back to buy the actual pair after an exam somewhere else. The selection is good and the sales rep is great about figuring out your style, handing you what he thinks fits best, and knowing what frames will suit your prescription best. I also had some odd requests tossed in (preferred snap on sunglasses) and he found me the perfect pair for my petite face. The doctor also came down and made sure to review my prescription and made sure it suited me. The sales rep and the doctor also worked with me to determine what was the most affordable using my insurance and what extra add ons were really necessary or not. I went back 5 days later to pick up (great turnaround considering they had to order the sunglasses separately) and the glasses were fit expertly. Totally recommended! read more

I was not happy with the contact lenses prescribed by the optometrist in my ophthalmologist's office. Both relocated to Long Island, and I thought it was a good time for a change. I had heard of Westside Vision and, after reading the glowing reviews, and living in the neighborhood, I gave it a try. Glad I did. Scheduling an appointment was easy. I was able to get an appointment for the next day. The woman on the phone was very pleasant and accommodating. When I arrived for my appointment, I received a friendly greeting. I was taken on time. Dr. Dong took his time to go through my medical history and to explain his findings during the exam. The exam itself was very through. We spent quite a bit of time trying out various lenses until we got it right. I was given a one week try-out period with a prescription that was quite different from my last prescription. The new prescription was excellent. I do a lot of reading for work, and these fit the bill quite well. I have worn contacts for over 30 years, these are the best. I went there for the first time 4 years ago. And I remember them being kind and taking time to explain things to me. I am not a daily glasses wearer and i hadn't had an eye exam in over a decade. my most recent visit and glasses fitting was a great experience. Ethan: "Actually, you know what, that would be kind of great." I've had four eyes for over fifteen years, and Westside Vision Associates is the best eye doctor experience that I've ever had. I received excellent service from the minute I called to make my appointment [and reschedule said appointment two times] all the way to the minute I walked out the door with my sexy new specs. Dr. K tells you everything that he's doing AS he's doing it. As a doctor-visit-hater, I really appreciate this. I've never had an eye doctor that was as communicative as Dr. K. This man should facilitate trainings to optomawhatevers on how to provide top-notch bedside manner. He's that good. After my very thorough eye exam, Dr. K. asked me some questions about what I was looking for in my new glasses, and then hand-picked four pairs that met my criteria. Me, being the jackass that I am, was like "pffft I'm gonna walk around and look at all of these other glasses because there's no way that anyone could know what I want based on just asking me a few questions". Do yourself a favor [and also save yourself about a half hour] and TRUST THIS MAN. I ended up choosing the first pair that he picked out for me. Of course. I've never in my life had an eye doctor take the time to help me pick out my glasses. And, when he had to leave the sales floor to conduct an exam on another patient, the other staff member who worked the lobby was extremely helpful and friendly. I've already referred three of my coworkers to Dr. K at WVA, and will continue doing so. I haven't been very good over the last couple years at keeping up with my eye hygiene habits. I've been sleeping in my contacts like a jerk and when my fat butt sat on a pair of glasses, I never got them replaced. So recently I decided to make amends with my eyeballs and get myself a new pair of glasses and a new set of contacts (I think I was using a discontinued brand). Based on Yelp reviews I decided to visit Westside and I couldn't be happier. The doctor was patient and understanding of my bad habits and got me fitted with a new pair of frames immediately. Did I mention that I have absolutely no fashion sense? The staff helped me pick out frames that looked great even though I had no idea where to even start when picking out a new pair of glasses. My co-workers all commented on how much they liked the new specs. The appointments were also all quick and painless and easy! It couldn't have gone better. I will be coming back next year! I was very excited to become a patient of Westside. I recently moved to the area, and they are very convenient to my office. With the rave reviews they have on Yelp, I figured I would give them a try. I called to set up a new patient appointment and spoke with someone. I work until 6pm, so I wanted to schedule something on a Thursday when they are open until 7pm. She let me know that the latest appointment available on that day is 6:30pm, which would have been perfect. The soonest appointment was 2 weeks from now, which was fine. Another phone rang in the background and she put me on a hold for a few minutes, at which point I was disconnected. I called back a few minutes later and the same person answered. I explained I had been disconnected and was trying to schedule an appointment and she put me through to another person. This person informed me that new patient appointments cannot be scheduled past 6:00pm on any day because when they schedule them later, people just don't show up (slightly unprofessional). I told her that I work until 6pm each day, so that wouldn't fit with my schedule. She said okay, and hung up. Overall, I was given the impression that they are not interested in new patients. I am disappointed because the doctor has such good reviews. read more

I'm so surprised this practice has 5 stars! I came here based on a recommendation from a friend and didn't know where else to go, but I think I'll just fly back to LA from now on to visit my trustworthy family optometrist. After thinking about my check-up a couple of days later, I realized Dr. Koperwas missed a lot of things I usually get done at an annual check-up. He didn't do the eye-puff test to measure fluid pressure inside the eye, and he also didn't do any visual field testing. Our exam lasted only about 10 min total, and he charged me an extra $75 just for taking 10 seconds to look at my contacts. It was pretty ridiculous...I was glad he told me I didn't have to replace my hard-contacts, but I felt like he didn't give them a thorough exam and now I'm afraid there may be scratches or other things wrong. read more

I give the doctor one star for being a competent doctor, but he does not know how to run an honorable business. The customer service was terrible. I was supposed to get a discount on frames with my insurance but the doctor told me that they would not honor that because all of their frames are already discounted. I checked with the insurance and they said that's absolutely not right, that he has to give the insurance discount to whatever price he is selling them for. And by the way, the frames he was selling were absolutely NOT discounted already. When I calmly discussed this with the doctor he actually raised his voice at me, was irate, and very rude. This place is overpriced in every way, and ripping you off no matter what. Even with the price of the exams. Side note: Since then, I went to Cohen's who actually matched the internet price of the same frames that I wanted. So Westside was charging $280 and not honoring the rules of my health insurance, and Cohen's got them for me at $158. read more

I can say without hesitation, and as someone with experience trying & dismissing multiple Manhattan eye doctors, that Dr. K is the best there is in the city. I haven't run in to many folks with worse eyes than I do (-8.5 in the left eye, -6.5 in the right). I have been largely unhappy with my eyecare service in Manhattan, after trying several chains and a few other offices. I will be coming back here for many years to go, and will be bringing my future family here as well. Dr. K knows his stuff, and specializes in making sure that you have the right contact brand to fit your eye. I didn't purchases glasses so I don't have any anecdotal experience there, but as far as eye exams, contact trials, and brand recommendations, Dr. K is the best. read more

Don't you love when your friend suggests a place to you and it actually is great? I guess on a whole i need better friends - but i found a new one in Eric (Dr. K). Objectively speaking, i had been going to the mall in recent years out of "ease" of just going in, getting a pair of glasses/contacts and walking out. The problem is they rushed me every time and are pushy with the higher priced stuff. It feels like getting a cell phone - pushing the most expensive items/accessories even if you don't need them. I've been going to Dr. Eric Koperwas for 3 years and have only had great experiences. The office staff is kind and helpful, and Dr. K is personable and always happy to answer questions with responses that make sense. I was told recently that Dr. K is going to start working less and that Dr. Dong will be taking those hours. The office made it a point for me to meet the new Dr so that I would already be familiar with him for future visits. Love it all. I called yesterday for an eye exam and was told there was an opening available during lunch. I decided to reserve the time and provided my social security number in order to authorize my vision insurance. I got to Westside Vision Associates about 5-10 minutes before my exam. I filled out a quick one-page application and in a moment's time, Dr. Eric Koperwas called me into the back. I was nervous because I couldn't even recall the last time I had an eye exam, easily over 10 years ago. Dr. K was very friendly and patient with me since I can't stand anything going near my eyes. He referred to me as "the perfect candidate that can't wear contacts" in a humorous way, and made sure I was at ease. He performed the typical paddle test and asked me to read letters on a screen, then put my eyes on a machine and asked me to read the letters again all while changing the lens strength multiple times. Thereafter, he put a drop of liquid in each eye and did a blue light pressure test on each eye and I was on my way. I was surprised to be in and out within 15-20 minutes. Although my visit did not require any glasses or further service, I was very happy with my visit and will return again for any vision needs I might require as I get older. read more

Pleasant staff but they did have a little trouble getting the correct prescription and correct lens shape. They were patient and kept plugging away though. If you go here, make sure that the eye doctor checks your vision once the eyeglasses arrive. One eye at a time. Make that part of the deal before you sign up. For some reason they were reluctant to do that. They just kept saying the I already had the exam and this is the prescription so why would we check it again. read more

I came here on recommendations from two of my coworkers who had had good experiences. Opinions in the healthcare setting can be colored somewhat by differences in insurance benefits, so I want to state that Westside Vision is in-network for the vision insurance I have and that my insurance benefits are good (small copay for routine exam, another copay for contact lens fitting, and discounts on contact lenses and glasses). I had a great experience. My wait time was minimal. The staff at the front desk are very friendly, helpful, and efficient both on the phone as well as in-person (and that counts a lot in NYC where I've been treated rudely by many healthcare office receptionists!). They did convince me to buy contacts through them even though I usually buy them online, but between my insurance coverage and a rebate, the cost ended up cheaper buying at the office. Dr. Koperwas was great as well. He was very patient and friendly. He didn't pressure me to get the new (more expensive) contacts on the market unlike some of the other eye doctors I've gone to in the past. He simply said, "there are some newer contacts out on the market now, but your current contacts seem to be fitting great and you're not having any problems, so I think we can stay with what you have." I keep stealing all my roommate's doctors... and will continue to do so as long as they are fantastic as Westside Vision. The location is right off of the 28th street subway stop, which is great when you want to pop over during the your lunch break. I didn't have to wait at all to get in, and my exam was the least stressful I've ever had. When it was time to pick out my glasses they spent a lot of time with me (mostly because I couldn't decide between 3 pairs that looked almost exactly alike but priced differently) giving me feedback and even seemed to be having fun. Theres's a reason why 100% of the reviews are 5 stars. This place is great. I had hastily booked an appointment at Union Square Optical because of the convenience of the location. But after I read the overwhelmingly negative reviews, I cancelled my appt. and booked at Westside. Polite, friendly employees, and a great selection of frames (though I ordered mine since the pair I had previously seen elsewhere wasn't in stock, so they ordered them for me AND at a better price). Dr. K was extremely nice, and was very thorough in his exam and explanation of my prescription. There's no pressure on up-charges either. Anybody that has moved to this city from a small town knows that finding a doctor here who makes you feel comfortable and cared about (like you would be with your old family doctor) is HARD. Like, "What the hell is wrong with the universe??!" hard, sometimes. Thank goodness I got a job down the street from Westside Vision and my co-workers recommended Dr. Koperwas to me. Not only does everybody in their office treat me like they've known me for years (ok, I guess at this point, they have), but Dr. K. is so nice, thorough and happy to see you that it makes me want to get a new pair of glasses every other month. Once I went in for my yearly exam and my vision (which is pretty terrible) hadn't changed enough that Dr. K thought I should get a new prescription. I guess this struck me as odd, since most doctors in NYC seem to want to try get you to spend any amount of extra money, any way they can on things you can't tell are necessary or not. Dr. K. is not one of those doctors. Straight-forward, the man is. I should also say that I have brought them many pairs of vintage optical frames for fitting with my prescription and every time they've done an excellent job. Vintage plastic frames can be extremely delicate, and many optometrists will refuse to put new lenses in for fear of breaking them. (It's a legitimate fear.) Westside Vision has done it flawlessly every time, though of course they make it clear to you that if they break, they are NOT responsible, which is a standard and fair disclaimer. I just want to give them props for being able to do this at all in the first place! They are also extremely reasonably priced. I believe eye exams (for glasses) are around $60 (if you want to spend less, then go to Walmart, ya cheapskate). To get one of my pairs of my vintage frames fitted with prescription lenses was, I believe, less than $100. AND it usually only takes a day or two before my glasses are ready. That's insane! He performed my eye exam and helped me pick out a pair of glasses. Very honest. Gave his opinion on what frames would match my facial structure. He wasn't trying to pitch the most expensive frames to make an extra buck. This place has an extensive selection of glasses. After picking the pair I liked, he told me that they'll call me when it's ready. They called the next day! I would definately recommend this place to everyone. After suffering through the worst service EVER at Park Slope Eye, I waited until my VSP insurance kicked in this year and went to Westside Vision purely because it is convenient to my office. It thought I fell upon a hidden gem until I looked on Yelp and saw all the rave reviews. Another one doesn't hurt though, right? The staff at Westside Vision is knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. To be honest, I'm not too impressed with the selection of eyeglasses there (I took my Rx to another retailer), but I am very pleased with the new contact lenses I was encouraged to switch to. I would buy glasses from them directly if they began to stock Mikli or LA Eyeworks. But in terms of eyecare, I was very impressed with Dr. Koperwas and plan to return next year. read more

In addition to a great optometrist--Dr. K was kind, thorough, and addressed all of my questions--Westside Vision has a wonderful staff that helped me find a pair of glasses from a large selection priced more reasonably than the $300+ frames I've seen in other optical stores. Clinching their awesomeness is the fact that they fit the lenses in house. Not in some back room, but in the open. Freddy, the kind man who does this work, had my glasses ready for me the next day and pre-adjusted the temple piece to fit my face before I returned. I had originally settled on a couple pairs of Warby Parkers going in, but Westside Vision helped me find glasses that suited my face better. I went here as a kind of last minute, I need new contacts and it's the end of the year appointment. I was able to get an appointment on the same day I called. The staff was friendly over the phone, and in person. The doctor himself was great. He asked me about my contact lens habits and needs, and genuinely seemed more interested in finding me contacts that work around my life, rather than getting me to change my routine to fit a pair of contacts. I called the day before and was able to book an appointment for the following day. They helped me get my insurance figured out ahead of time; it was a complicated situation and they saved me a lot of stress by doing it themselves. I arrived 15 minutes early, filled out my forms, and was seen by the doctor five minutes before I was scheduled. Amazing! I was also out of there within twenty minutes, making it easy to do on my lunch break. The doctor was personable and genuinely interested in helping me out. He suggested a different brand of contacts that are cheaper and that he's gotten good feedback about. All in all, really great! I'm already recommending it to others! read more
