We'd last gotten new glasses about nine years ago and it was way past time to replace them - so my husband finally had an appointment a few months ago and I finally went there today. Fortunately Dr. Ho's next patient wasn't scheduled until awhile after my appointment, so he & I had a *wonderful* conversation. Afterwards I spent a lot of time picking out two frames, and the young woman who helped me was *terrific*; she spent a lot of time helping me and she also had a great sense of humor. Dr. Ho is fantastic. By far the best optometrist I've been too. He's attentive, takes his time, and gives perfectly detailed explanations of what's going on. Physically the space is small but very well appointed. The staff is hit or miss. Sometimes they're very attentive and on top of things and at other times not. Still, I go there for Dr. Ho's care. If you're looking around for a new doctor and this area is convenient for you then I highly, highly recommend him. I've never had an optometrist look at my eyes for so long and show me pictures and detailed explanation for my eyes! He took his time during my exam and is very thorough. He walked me through everything he's seeing, which is a very rare experience for me who's been seeing optometrists/ophthalmologists all of my life. This review is mainly for Dr. Ho. He is passionate, thorough, and knowledgable. I came here earlier this year for an eye check up, as I have not gotten one in a few years. He explained so many things to me that no other eye doctor have before in Chinatown and took his time. I liked how my appointment did not feel rushed at all. I was also prescribed a different type of contact lens, as he said my eyes were not getting enough oxygen from the lens I was currently wearing. I was travelling from out of state during the christmas/new years holiday season. I had already resigned myself to not being able to get my annual eye exam for the year since I couldn't get an appointment with a in-network provider back home, but was overjoyed when I tried calling and got an appointment the same week. The two ladies at the front desk were very helpful, professional, and provided outstanding service. All of my questions and concerns were fully addressed when I was asking questions about my new insurance. I really appreciated the fact that since I had arrived to my appointment on time, I was seen first versus another customer who was very late to their appointment before mine. What's more is that they agreed to ship me my glasses free of charge when the lab supplying my glasses ran into multiple delays and I had already flown back home. I came here a few months back for a contact test and it's safe to say i was not disappointed! For starters, The staff at H Optics are incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive, making the entire experience seamless and enjoyable. She was super kind and chill when I kept blinking during the air pressure thing and when I couldn't tell who was talking to me at one point because I'm blind (not literally) and she was down the hall. Dr. Ho and his staff is awesome! I delayed my appointment this year due to the pandemic and when I showed up, I knew I was in great hands. The door was locked to avoid random people from coming in. When I arrived I was the only patient there and all of the staff were wearing masks. When filling out forms there is a bin for used pens and sanitized pens. I tried on several pairs of lenses and they cleaned the glasses after I tried them. I felt very safe before, during, and after my eye exams. Highly recommend. read more

This review is for the office administrators and H Optics as a business, not for Dr. Ho himself and his capability as an optometrist. I called to set up an appt for 2/9/14 for a routine eye exam and a contact lens fitting. I arrive, I have the eye exam, and Dr. Ho says my appointment is over, but I said, what about my contact lens fitting? He said, oh we don't have enough time in this appointment for it - you need at least an hour. I said okay, fine. Fast forward to 9/24/14 and I have my contact lens fitting, I call to make an appointment. And they said my contact lens fitting and contact lens training fees are not covered. I know my insurance plan covers the contact lens fitting, and told the lady on the phone the same thing. I come in for the contact fitting, finish, they say I owe $80 ($50 for contact lens fit, $30 for a training). I asked why it's not covered, they said according to your insurance you're not covered. I didn't understand why, but I said, I will just pay what I owe right now and dispute it with my insurance. I call Eyemed (my insurance) and they say in order for the contact lens fitting to be covered under the plan, I have to have it on the same day as my routine eye exam. (note: back on 2/9/14, I did set up an appt for that, but it was not fulfilled and was setup incorrectly by one of the office ladies). So it was not the insurance's fault, but the provider's fault! Dispute starts here. H Optics tells me well we held off to bill your insurance so that you can come back for the contact lens fit so it would have been covered under your plan (Lie#1). I called eyemed and they said on 2/9/14 my DOS, they also billed on the same day. Then they said, Dr. Ho told you to come back before the billing cycle in order for it to be covered (Lie #2). He NEVER told me that and Celeste from the office even admits that H Optics AND Dr. Ho did not know the plan. I said that is insurance fraud if you were going to "make it work" for the insurance to cover it anyway. The insurance requires for it to be done on the same DAY not billing cycle. So at this point my contact lens fitting wouldn't have been covered at all. Now they say (After finding out that they billed on 2/9/14) they backtrack and say well you should not have come in 7 months later. What does this have to do with ANYTHING? You guys BOTCHED my appointment and now I can't get the contact lens fit covered when it should have been covered in the first place. Then they also said it is the patient's responsiblity to know their insurance plan - true, which I DID know, that's why I setup the appointment on 2/9/14 for a routine eye exam AND the contact lens fit, but it couldn't be fulfilled bc someone in the office couldn't do their job properly. And now I have to eat up the costs because of someone else's stupidity. A message to Dr Ho and H Optics - was it really worth disputing with me to lose me as a patient? Not that I'm a super awesome patient, but I've bought Ray Ban sunglasses, I've done my exams here for the past two years. All of that over $50? I'm disputing this bc I could have had ZERO out of pocket charges and bc H optics was in the wrong. They constantly back track and make up stories to get themselves paid. Just revising my review to add this crucial message regarding the staff up front: If you don't call them, NOTHING GETS DONE! I had to call them to find out (Days later) that my glasses were ready for pickup....this is after they told me they would give me a call on the day that it was. Ok fine. I wasn't too bothered by that. Broke the arm of my glasses 2 weeks later (my own stupid fault) and had to return them for an exchange. The next following month was dragging and consisted of me always following up on things: -Did you call insurance and return my glasses yet?" - No, we'll do it today and give you a call back. - Ok. do you have my number? - No, what is it (blank stare) 5 weeks later, I was finally picking up my replacement glasses. Oh guess what, insurance didn't kick in. Another 3 weeks of following up to make sure that happens. The optometrist's office manager ended up getting back to me a week later, after I posted a review update on yelp... and we began to play phone tag with what to do about the bad lenses. They finally admitted they were defective, evidently they stopped using their old lenses manufacturer because of quality issues similar to mine. Anyways, they offered new lenses to me which I didn't need, had already replaced the lenses after a week of no contact. So the office manager talked to the optometrist and a day later agreed to refund me for the faulty lenses! I'm happy they worked a solution out with me. The first time I came this place i was pretty skeptical as it has so many 5 star yelp reviews. It didn't look that different from many other eye places I've been to and the receptionists I've talked with didn't seem particular more friendly either. But once I started talking to Dr. Ho I realized that he was really passionate about his practice and his patients. My first visit all I wanted was some contacts before the benefit expires for the month but we ended up talking for a while about the different types of contacts vs. using glasses. The second time I visited which was just a week ago, he ended up spending even more time with me one on one after I briefly mentioned that I use eye drops more because of my dry eyes. I was really surprised when he decided to get to the root of the cause without even me asking for diagnoses. If you're looking for an eye doctor I would really recommend him. His prices I believe aren't much different from others you will find in the city but really its his service that I haven't been able to find anywhere else. Yes Yelping is good and this is one fine example is what I experienced with Dr. Clinton Ho. This was my second eye exam in New York and atleast 10x times better than the last one at Cohens. Dr. Ho is a real knowledgeable person, conducted a very detailed eye exam, explaining the medical details behind in each process with utmost simplicity possible. He was very patient to all my questions and answered very rationally. After my basic exam was done, he asked me if I had my pupils dilated to check my retina health recently. Since I had never done he suggested I do that too and it really helped to confirm my good retina health. Going forward he did quickly explain how this test helps to reveal high BP or chronic diabetes. Really through in all his procedures and explanations. I haven't had really bad experiences with Doctors in NYC yet(touchwood), however this would surely top all those. I used my mediclaim and it was just 10 bucks for me, though for the kind of service the $85 examination a year is absolutely not bad. Everything positive you read here is accurate. I saw Dr. Ho on very short notice after an awful experience with another eye doctor (stay tuned for that one-star review), and every aspect of the visit met or exceeded my expectations. The front desk was friendly and professional, the exam office was neat and clean, with a cute little area for removing contact lenses, and the equipment looked brand-new and up-to-date. Dr. Ho himself is a relaxed and friendly guy who seems to enjoy his work. He showed me photos of my retina and pointed out various things about how the eye works. After months of blurry vision, I walked out of there in less than an hour with a contact lens prescription that worked for me, plus three free bottles of solution. I should add that the staff I met were very friendly and respectful. When I came back to the front area one of them had an egg sandwich on the desk which she quickly and neatly folded away. My eyes are as close to being 20/20 as possible, without actually being 20/20. I don't need any special care, just the basic check up to make sure my eyes are in good shape. Dr. H was super professional, super kind and super fast. Got everything done in a timely manner and I wasn't hanging around in the waiting area for super long. They are pretty close to their appointments which is always a good thing. His staff are also super nice and friendly and helpful...they actually know what they are doing. They don't have a huge selection of glasses, but they can special order frames for you. I personally like the smaller selection as there is less to choose from as I my face does not fit well with all frames. I just found my new eye doctor. read more

Dr. Ho is the Harvard of all optometrists. I have literally never seen a better optometrist in my life, and I have been blind as a bat since the 1st grade so I've seen a lot of optometrists. He is extremely thorough and keeps up to date on all the latest research and new products when it comes to contact lenses. He will talk your ear off about preventative care, research on blue light, sun damage effects, etc. I'm kind of nerdy and have done some research on proper ergonomic position, blue light, etc. so I got a real education speaking with him. He's also really focused on making sure you get the right fit. I'm moving to NJ soon but I will still schlep over here to see him, he's that good. His staff is also courteous and responsive. i sat in the waiting area for 40 minutes. when i asked the receptionist how soon the doctor would see me, she said it would be another 20 minutes. i said 'that's a full hour after my appointment time--' she said 'you're not the only one--other people have to wait an hour, too.' as if i were asking for special treatment. i waited the extra 20 minutes, then had to ask her again when i could see the doctor. she said maybe 10 minutes, so i cancelled the appointment and left. ...no 'sorry', no 'we had an emergency', no heads up at any point during my hour long wait. read more

Just wanted to add my two cents regarding the $75 contact fitting exam that I paid for. Although I was also a little skeptical about paying such a high fee for a contact fitting, I found that it was probably the smartest decision for me, since I was having a tough time finding a brand of contacts that offered toric (for astigmatism) daily contacts that fit well, and worked with the dryness in my eyes. With the $75 payment, Dr. Ho sent me off with 14 boxes of dailies (35 days worth) from 3 different brands, and 2 different cylinders (since my astigmatism was in between two cylinder shapes). I tried the various contacts in three weeks and was able to find the best brand for my eyes. This contact fitting is only mandatory for new customers, I believe, so I feel that it was a great choice for me. This might not be the case for someone who already has a brand they love, doesn't have astigmatism/dry eyes, or feels they don't really need a "re-fitting," but I could see from the Doctor's perspective that he would want to make sure your previous optometrist was accurate in their assessments. read more

I made an appt here because they take my vision insurance. While filling out the new client paperwork, there was a form detailing possible other charges related to what they termed "contact fitting" for new clients and first-time contact lens users. So lookee here, I've been wearing contacts for, at least, the past 16 years with, more or less, yearly visits to various optometrists for contact lens prescriptions. I HAVE NEVER been confronted with the prospect of paying additional fees in the range of $30-$75 for a "contact fitting," separate and apart from the examination costs (plus $30 if you need a follow-up appt). At every other place that I've visited, you pay for an examination (or your insurance covers it) and you get a prescription for contacts. It's possible that you may switch out those contacts for other ones, but the process is quick - and the optometrists usually just do it. It's never this whole additional thing that gets its own name and that you pay additional moola for. Maybe a "contact fitting" surcharge is new thing now? Is this the norm? Only in NYC.... I approached the front desk ladies about it, both of whom were quite nice, and they confirmed, indeed, that there's a separate "contact fitting" charge aside from the examination. I was like, "Oh." And then I was like, "Okay, bye." read more

Would go back for contacts and exam. Not for glasses. Dr. Ho is great in every way. Very thorough, friendly, professional and focused on helping you get what you need. His staff is also friendly and professional. Things are prompt and straight forward. No games or sales gimmicks. No pressure to buy a ton of contacts at inflated prices just to get the eye exam. And they automatically give you a copy of your prescription to take with you. I got an eye exam for both contacts and glasses. I've always had trouble with dry eyes and Dr Ho gave me various options in trial contact lenses to find the best match. Contacts ordered and arrived in 2 days. That part worked out great. I also got the lenses changed on my favorite pair of glasses. No change to my prescription. I don't know much about the various types of lenses, but I went with what they recommended: high index, for my bad eyes, so they're not too thick. That recommendation, I'm used to. When I got the glasses back, though, the new lenses felt incredibly off. Vision seemed fine but I felt like I was looking through coke bottles. Looking at myself in the mirror, my eyes appear extra small. I took them back to confirm that I got the high index lenses, and they suggested maybe I should have gotten the even higher index lenses, which would cost me $380. That's on top of what I already paid,because lenses are, of course, are not refundable. I'm taking my glasses elsewhere to get the lenses switched out. I've been wearing glasses for 25 yrs, always go with the lenses I'm recommended, and never had a problem... until now. $200+ down the drain. read more

Last year after years of hearing from my classmates at the gym that contacts were they way to go, and not knowing if anyone was even talking to me while training, I was convinced by the multiple reviews on yelp to go to Dr. Ho for both an eye exam, which I was year overdue AND to try out contacts. I was expecting to meet a very old man, with tons of experience and here I was distracted by Dr. Ho's youth and his wonderful personality. He was the most patient man in the world!! The first time I went it took me 2 hours until I gave up on trying to put them on. Dr. Ho never pressured me and told me to return next week so I can learn to put them on and take them off in front of him. He warmed me that I would not walk out of his practice unless I was certain to learn to use them. I tried a second time and just couldn't do it. But then I brought in my significant other of that time and I was able to put them on and off without a problem. This doctor is a SAINT!!!! I would've expected him to throw me out of his office and tell me to give up. But after learning my situation that I am a mixed martial artist that could benefit from using contacts, he was convinced to help me. On top of that I had no insurance, and dead broke like anyone in NYC and I made mention of that, so he charged me a very reasonable fee for the exam and gave me 3 month's worth of contacts and the cleaning solution for only $100. I couldn't believe that he allowed me to waste his time for that little and still he hooked me up. He also got me a pair of contacts the Air Optix monthly and I never had any trouble. The doctor told me that he prides himself in finding the right match for anyone, even for people who have had problems with their contacts and he was right. Just a year after I've taken my entire family and friends to go to him because he actually cares about his patients. I also want to mention that he simply gave me my prescription and encouraged me to buy them from any affordable source. He never tried to hustle me into buying anything at his store. He's not in the business of selling glasses or contacts like many do. And because he also does surgeries and works with real issues, he is concerned about quality and the respectful treatment of his patients. He was also very attractive, a problem that I encountered when trying to put the contacts on, but that's something anyone can overcome. I would give him 10 stars if I could but Yelp doesn't allow it. I recommend him for everything he has to offer, from his professionalism to his affordable and accessible services for the working class in the heart of the Lower East Side. H Optics proves that Yelp works. I live uptown and most people usually go to a local place for their eyes. I was, and it was not working out for me. Sometimes I just couldn't focus, I'd get eye strain, I'd get home from work and want to rip out my contacts before anything else. Each doctor I went to upped my contact's power or blamed it on using computer screens and left it at that. I was starting to seriously think there was something medically wrong with my eyes. I knew I needed to find someone who could help me but every eye doctor seems exactly the same on the surface. So I turned to Yelp and found H Optics on the Lower East Side. I got an appointment the next day and when I sat down in the chair it took Dr Ho about 5 seconds of hearing my story immediately knew what my issues were. The process of course is described the same way as every eye doctor examines you, you look at the chart, etc. But it was the way he used the exam to solve my issues and give me a prescription that was spot on and 2.5 degrees LOWER than I was wearing (2.5 degrees lower is a massive change for contact wearers, that's how poorly other doctors understood my issue). Then unlike any other doctor, we went into the types of contacts and how each one works differently. Like many people I have protein build up in my eyes and some contacts do not work well in some eyes. He gave me two brands at a time to wear over a week and decides which was best. I'd return, we're speak about it and he'd give me more brands. We went though a few until we finally found one that works perfectly for me. And all of this at 'no cost' - that is, I paid the initial exam price and nothing else regardless how many times I went back. We finally found the right prescription, the right brand and I even changed my saline solution after he showed me how some work better than the others (ie, I always bought the cheapest I could find). When we finally picked out the right brand, he had zero hard sell to buy any products and just handed me my prescriptions for contacts and eyeglasses without me asking. My one prescription works for computers, distance, reading, and the 14-16 hours a day they are in my eyes. I do not need glasses for the computer, nor reading, which every other doctor tried to sell me on. I just see. To the point I forget I wear contacts. I can't thank Dr Ho enough. read more
