My first time in this Grain I've been in the one in Newark and Middletown. They both earned higher ratings. We went for lunch. The wait was minimal. The hostess mad a point to keep us updated. Finally seated. Waited awhile for waitress but we knew they were busy. She came and took our order. We got our cokes and waited and waited and waited. Over 1 hour for grilled cheese and a burger. Still no food so we left after offering to pay for cokes. I don't believe they cared. Hosted apologized. She was best part of the restaurant The stars are for her! read more

This was a first time for lunch, have been to dinner here previously. Server was great, attentive, and patient as we sampled several beers. So happy they have a great vegetarian burger option! It's an ok place but not great. They do not know how to pour a beer. There was no head. The burgers were good but not how we asked for them to be cooked. I asked for med/rare but it was raw in the center. I don't mind rare so I eat it but should have sent it back. They said the burger came with fries but they actually charge an extra $2. I don't eat fries so if I would have known I would have skipped that. Just saying they should tell you. The service was good not great. They did not fill out water in a timely manner. I recently had brunch here with a group of friends. The service was slow and the waitress made little contact and offered no apology or explanation as to the delayed service. I could understand the wait, about an hour and a half to get our food, if the restaurant was busy might have been understandable, but there were only two other tables with guests when we arrived. If there had been more communication between my party and the waitress our frustration would have been mitigated. Also, when the food did arrive, it was brought in stages so that only two or three people received their food and the others had to wait even longer. read more

Tried this place tonight for the first time. Great unassuming atmosphere, and slightly hipster with the Edison string lights everywhere. Great first impression. We had a knowledgeable waiter and the food was great! The drink menu even had a chart for identifying what type of beer you'd want to try-- very clever. The menu has a lot of great options. They seem to care about the quality of the food and every item has something unique about it. They try to get local products into their menu. I got a "burger" that was made from veggies/ beans and it was really great! I'm not a vegetarian but I was intrigued. If we lived closer it would definitely be a "go-to" spot for me. read more

Have been twice and same result - really awful. Service is pretty good for a new place but the food is s giant disappointment. It might take okay but I can't tell given that everything is served cold. Not just not hot, cold. Went for brunch today and I don't like cold pizza for breakfast but today I learned I also don't like cold chili as served on their sunrise nachos. Also got the cinnamon roll which was so stale and crumbly that it was inedible. I love cinnamon rolls but only had three bites as the thirst caused by dry roll became overpowering. I recommend they source their cinnamon rolls from Burger King each morning to improve the quality. My companion went with bananas Foster French toast and ate about half as the rum sauce was really just rum. Maybe good on a Caribbean island for dinner but for brunch it seems like the rum sauce should be more subtle than just pure liquor. On the plus side, the coffee was not bad. My first time I was there, everything was cold too including the grilled cheese. That's not as easy as it sounds but the kitchen has mastered cold food no matter the meal. read more

I've tried Grain twice since they have opened a few weeks ago. My coworkers and I work down the street so we were hoping to find a place with a good happy hour. They do have a decent happy hour, with a couple dollars off drafts and well drinks and certain appetizers are discounted. Unfortunately that is where the good part of the review ends. Both times I was there the service was friendly enough but annoyingly slow, even though they had tons of staff on and it wasn't that busy. The most disappointing thing was the food. Everything that we ordered was lacking flavor and nothing came out hot enough. The food that we tried were the fried pickles (not hot and the batter had no seasoning), the nachos (the cheese was cold from the moment we got it), the beer cheese dip (very weird flavor and was served in a goblet? Such a weird choice), and the bacon wrapped shrimp (no complaints with this one, it was pretty good). Overall disappointing experience and would only return for a drink, the food is definitely not worth the price. read more

Edit: went recently this week (another friend form out of town recommended we meet here, even after I said it wasn't all that great) and they brought out COLD, soggy $15 nachos. Had the waiter come over maybe a little before it sat there for 20 min, we'd feel differently. Underwhelming menu... you never know if you'll enjoy eating the same thing twice, as it's never made the same way. Got a burger and fries my first time there, but they brought my fries out 15 minutes after my burger. The service is consistently slow but at least they're nice. read more

The food was delicious & the service was great. Highly recommend the fried pickles & the fried avocados (special) are amazing.

We came for the first time with a group of 8, 5 adults and 3 kids. We all had a good meal. The crap nachos were delicious with a generous amount of crab. Everyone enjoyed there entrees but the slammin salmon and salmon blt stood out. I personally enjoyed the mahi tacos but the shell did start to fall apart but what was inside was really good. Beer selection was good and the one person who had a mixed drink raved how good it was. Our waitress was friendly and vey attentive. The whole meal took awhile but we had a large group with appetizers so it was to be expected. We didn't have dessert but we saw one go by that made me wish we did! read more

Ok, I have been in the service industry for many years, so I would like to emphasize that getting a new restaurant off the ground is hard and stressful! It takes a few weeks to staff and find the right people. So with that said being patience, upstairs bartenders were awful, like stressed over getting a beer and completely sweaty and annoyed. Comfortable pub venue and nice beer selection. Mostly American bistro type fare. Wings were good but my turkey burger was just ok and very salty. My wife had a chicken breast panini with roasted peppers and it was also kind of bland. Their homemade potato chips are good. Our server was friendly enough but not attentive. Why do pubs give you a 10oz wine glass and only a 4oz pour?!? At least use a smaller glass so that doesn't appear so cheap. I will probably go back at some point because it is near by and maybe next time my opinion will be better read more

The hostess staff seemed quite confused but things worked out OK. We sat upstairs which has garage doors to enclose it. They were open so it was quite pleasant but breezy. Hole on to your menu or it will be on the roof next door. The waiter was attentive and efficient. We had the fried pickles and sesame tune appetizers. Pickles were good. Tuna was nothing special. Despite the reviews, we were in town and wanted to try the new place. It was an old vintage bar before and we had to check out what was done. Between us, we had 2 appetizers and 2 entrees and everything was delicious. There was live music (Ryan Schubert) and he was amazing. Overall, a great date night for any crowd. This is the second or 3rd time I've been to grain and I have not been impressed. Went for brunch this time and had a make your own omelet. I chose mushrooms spinach and sausage. They were out of mushrooms. How does a place in kennett not have mushrooms? Mushrooms aside, my omelet was completely over cooked and it came with 1 piece of packaged rye dry toast(no butter anywhere), and some smashed up tater tots with carmelized onions tossed in. The food is clearly pre packed or frozen and very very average. Grain needs to step up its game if it plans to compete with the other good establishments nearby. As I mentioned it was brunch so it was about 1015 am and they were blaring eighties music on the sound system. Definitely could have lived without that. Service was okay, very young staff not super tuned into the details. I'd rather pay a little more money for food prepared with fresh ingredients and a more experienced staff read more

I won't speak on the food because I have not eaten at Grain, but I've been back a few times for drinks with friends. Each time a different bartender and each time underwhelming. Customer service was non existent. I don't understand how a bartender with any shred of experience or skill can let a customer sit with an empty glass on the bar for 15+ minutes. And it wasn't terribly busy. One time the bartender had a personal friend at the bar and spent more time conversing with her than tending to the paying customers. I get the sense they just rushed this place open and expected to repeat what they started in Newark with an inferior staff. There's certainly room in KS for another good spot but so far this place has totally fumbled. Time to clean house. read more

I never do yelp reviews, but I had a veggie burger and loved it (the fries are amazing) and they're really good portion sizes. Everyone I was with loved their meal. This is the worst restaurant in Kennett Square, and honestly one of the worst restaurants I've been to. Not a single dish there tastes good, and I've had about half of the menu over the course of 5 visits (yes I gave it that many chances). I have felt sick every time I've eaten there. I truly don't understand how anyone has anything positive to say about the food there, unless their standards are shamefully low or they've never had a halfway decent meal in their life. The decor is cheap and uninspired, the live music is crappy and distracting. The owners are clueless about what makes a good restaurant, and they want to continue polluting this area by opening more locations of this terrible chain. KBC and Victory are both lightyears better. Even Applebees is better. Even skipping dinner is better. read more

HORRIBLE!!! This is by far the most disappointing experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Yesterday was my birthday and I chose The Grain to eat at because I was dying to have their crab dip. I thought of no better place to go because my family frequents this restaurant at least once a week and they also catered my graduation party. So I was expecting a good meal to say the least. But as I have already learned, the food is delicious, but only half the time. After waiting for an hour, my entire table received cold food. We were one of maybe five tables. When we sent it back it came back cold a second time. Not only were the meals cold but they were missing ingredients that were supposed to be there. We order truffle fires and were given regular fries. The Springtime Penne was supposed to come with a truffle oil crostini but I was served a pathetic attempt at garlic bread. After this debacle, I still today wanted to have my crab dip. I ordered it and when I came to pick it up I was shorted on my change. Not even 10 minutes later, I opened the container to find cold crab dip with the shredded cheese not even melted. I will never again eat at The Grain. Terrible management!!!!!! Worse cooks. Was hesitant to write a review but finally am. The atmosphere is great, the drinks are great, and I personally have always liked and had good experiences with the bartenders and the servers. Plus the owners and managers are generous when it comes to donations, events for charity and non-profits. I've also heard good things about the food at the Newark location (haven't heard anything either way with the 3rd location.) I know many people have had good experiences with the food, but I've eaten there at least 12 times (maybe more) and I'd say that even the things that are good one or two times are problematic at other times - mostly due to being cold, over or under done, or having way too much salt (and I LOVE salt) and I know many others in town that have had the same experience. I'm really not that nit-picky of a person, and I wouldn't even write this if I didn't want them to try to take concerns like mine and other's seriously instead of brushing them off and people just being picky. Some people are, but in my experience and that of many others in this town, there are some serious execution problems in the kitchen. While I like many things about it, I personally have stopped ordering food there and - again - I know many other people that have said the same thing - they will go for the drinks, but that the food is so hit and miss that at the point it's not worth spending the money. read more

Just finished brunch with my family of 11. While the food was good, I do have a couple complaints. All of our food came out at the same time except for one person, where the order was messed up. Instead of apologizing, we heard from the waitress the order was messed up and it'll be out 'soon, ok'. Instead of leaving the incorrect order for him to snack on while the rest of us ate, she took the food back to the kitchen (to throw out). The correct food didn't come back out for another 10 minutes. Next, the citrus avocado wrap had one piece of avocado in it. We were so excited for this new location to open, we would love for Kennett to continue to grow into the fantastic local town it's becoming. Having visited Grain in Newark we had high hope's. Obviously the ambience there is fantastic, there's nowhere else with the roof deck that has such a beautiful breeze coming through. The disappointment came when after we placed our order and corrected our server not once but two times about what we wanted our meal came out one by one with about 15 minutes between the first and final dish being delivered. Even after speaking with the server to correct our meal as she was putting it into the computer, two of them came out missing the parts of it we talked about! Sadly, the Cuban sandwich was really disappointing. There was barely any meat, and the bread was all wrong. The final meal to come out was a burger and wasn't even cooked to temp, so we weren't really sure why it took an extra 15 minutes from when the first burger was delivered. Having worked in the service industry in a similar restaurant for over 12 years makes me want to give them one more chance. I'm hoping these are just growing pains, but these are very fixable issues. The Decour is great and the staff was super friendly. If they can get the timing and the portion size correct in the kitchen this place will be able to survive. read more

First, they should actuallly have the items listed on the menu (3 things we wanted to order were not available). Overall, poor service, slow kitchen (no food after waiting 40 minutes, only then to be told our appetizer was not available AFTER we had to ask the status of our food). We were only 2 people and ordered only 2 apps and one sandwich. Beer was flat too. The place wasn't even that busy, and plenty of servers running around. Also staff was snacking on food at a back table near ours, everytime they would walk by it, which was strange. We finally just left without eating (left cash on the table to cover our drinks). The table next to us never even got waited on after being seated, so they left too. Too bad -- we had heard mixed reviews but wanted to give it a try anyway and thinking after a year they would have worked out the kinks. We went to Grain last Saturday. We were very excited to try the new place since we were big fans of Half Moon and were so sad that it closed. We ordered the brussel sprouts and the crab nachos as an appetizer. The brussel sprouts were amazing but the crab nachos were terrible. The were made with really disgusting fake cheeses and I struggled to find any crab on the crab nachos. They were over fried won tons...which was odd at best. For those of you who have had the crab nachos at Half Moon you will be disappointed with this version. They are nothing short of terrible. For dinner I got the lobster roll. It cost $17.00. I expected a standard lobster roll sandwich. Cold lobster salad over a hot dog roll piled high. In fact that is what it said on their menu. What I got was warm sauteed lobster with too much old bay on a roll. The lobster was dried out and barely visible. The worst sandwich I ever had in my entire life. And certainly not worth $17. On top of it the beer was a limited selection and my beer was $8.00 for Victory Gose. Very pricey. I really wanted to like this place but it was just terrible. I would not go again. read more

Grain? Try gross. We came thinking it was still Half Moon Cafe (their website is still up). Nachos with huge dollop of brown guacamole signaled that things were not going to go well. There was not even hint of green in guacamole. Waiter said he would take off bill. He didn't! Roasted brussel sprouts were not roasted. They were soaked soggy in balsamic vinegar. The Cubano was inside out. The bread was just a backwards roll dry with no infusion of flavor. Meet flavorless. Crab cakes meal came with no aioli. Not much crab in crab cakes. The low reviews are accurate. Don't come here for the food. I really wish the owners would move away from a one size fits all restaurants situation. I've had several interactions with them, and it seems like they come to show off to friends instead of get to know the people that keep their business afloat in this still relatively small town. This food is basic bar food at best. I would say it's the worst food in town. I hate saying that because the people who work here are awesome and it has a great atmosphere. Music is usually pretty good, and bingo and trivia are fun. Brunch is the best thing they have going. Apparently it's award winning- I wouldn't go that far. Much better brunch/breakfast/lunch food to be had at Cafe Americana, but compared to the other pubs (victory and two stones) they do a pretty good job. Hopefully the owners see this. They've had three chefs in the few years they've been open (I think 2.5). Not a great track record. Completely overpriced. Really underwhelming food. Cheesesteak was 80% roll and very little meat. A sandwich comes with under-salted chips. If you want a side salad, that will take your $13 cheesesteak up to $18. Also ordered the southwestern Cobb salad. Dressing was cloyingly sweet mix of ranch and barbecue sauce. Largely just romaine and a handful of toppings for $15. I would not be as disappointed in the food if it weren't so overpriced. Will not go again. read more

Food quality not consistent. I had the vegetarian stuffed eggplant which was good, but nothing too memorable. My husband had the Cubano and man....it was the weakest Cubano he's ever had, and he orders them a lot! This sandwich was mostly bread, with a few measly pieces of meat. A good Cubano is full of meat, cheese, with pickles and mustard. Literally all I could see on that sandwich was bread, and a those few slices of meat. It came with a side of chips and to me they tasted like they had been made in the morning and left out, because they tasted stale. We really liked the nachos and the raspberry cocktail special though, and loved having the live music there! So like I said....kind of a mixed bag here. read more

Very poor service. Went in around 1:00 on a Saturday. Restaurant had roughly 4 tables occupied, so it was not busy. After being seated, we waited for our server. Three bartenders sat behind an empty bar, and we were passed multiple times by various servers without being acknowledged.
