It's good! Not the best restaurant in the area food wise, but the atmosphere is nice. I live close by & it's nice to go to for a quick bite or for some drinks on the roof top with friends. For a night out it's nice because it's lowkey so you can have a nice convo with people & it's not too loud. If family friendly is your vibe it's also family friendly. Not sure why this place has such bad reviews! I've been to the other Grain location and loved them. This one is okay compared to the others I think. They do have this cool rooftop portion where you can open up and look out at the city. I got crab nachos that mostly had everything else and barely any crab meat. Paid the extra $4 for the protein(chicken). As you can see that was a waste of money considering the amount that was added to the nachos. The lettuce is cut at 6" pieces and is very frustrating trying to enjoy . The "crema" is okay , not much in the flavor department . Today was the end of a long week of school for our group and we wanted a place to go and relax and just talk out and be ourselves. So we picked here because we frequently eat at all the places right in town. We walked in and who we thought was just the host turned out to be the MOD (manager on duty) at the time. We requested to sit outside upstairs and we walked up the steps and we were gonna be seated in the sun and everyone agreed it was to hot. and requested to sit on the side with no sun but a nice breeze. We asked very very kindly to move and in response was told that it's Thursday and it gets busy so we can't sit on that side or put a table together. Mind you we know how busy a Thursday at 4:00 in town is... ITS NOT. So to make small talk we were just like listen we had a long week and the sun is just not gonna do it for us sorry it was just stressful week and hot and we just wanted relax, and the mangers response was (EVERYONE HAS STRESSFUL DAYS) and walks away and doesn't give us a table and goes back down the steps and throws a temper tantrum like a baby. Meanwhile sends the nicest waitress we could have probably got all evening. She said you guys can go ahead and sit there he said he would allow it... How dare he send that nice girl up to an angry table after he made a rude comment back and stomped downstairs like a baby. We told her many times thank you thank you thank you! She made our experience 100% better. She got our drinks and got us food and was such a kind soul. She truly is a MVP. She should be making more money then the manager guy who couldn't even hold a conversation with us and just got nasty real quick. Our food was amazing Our drinks were amazing Whoever the manger was on board at that time tho. You are the reason why a giant giant group of us were about to walkout. You would have been the reason your establishment wasn't thriving in that moment. There were 7 of us and we all got atleast two drinks and all ordered food. So our bills averaged 45$ per person. Made a pit stop in Kennett Square to go visit a good friend of mine from undergrad. I asked her for recommendations to grab a beer in the area before we were supposed to meet up for dinner. I'm glad she recommended this spot! She ended up meeting up with me for a drink and we decided to stay for dinner due to the lovely rooftop space that they have. They had a good local draft selection and the chicken sandwich was satisfying. We had great service too who was very attentive to when we needed drink refills throughout our time there. They're on a list of vegetarian friendly places to go, but don't buy it. To say "substitute vegetarian burger" for other burgers isn't enough. To have a salad isn't enough. To have a flatbread isn't enough. I'm positive that simply having a veggie burger as an option doesn't mean that burger is being cooked separately from the same grill as the other burgers. The local watering hole. Grain is great for what it is and I LIKE it! I have sat at the bar for drinks and apps, I have sat downstairs and upstairs which are all great for different occasions. I like the atmosphere upstairs if you wanna have a conversation and I also like listening to live music and arching the game down stairs. Maybe butting into some conversations happening at the bar. We have brought our kids here a couple times for dinner which worked great they have good options for the whole family when you are looking for a solid meal. I wanted to really like it at Grain, and I'm sure eating in is fun, especially with the rooftop, but I can't get over how I paid $14 for a salad with maybe only a cup (maybe even less) of greens. I did choose to pay an additional $6 for shrimp, and they did give a fair portion of that. It was a good salad, but I think just overpriced. The sweet potato fries were very good, and a good size portion for their price ($4). The staff were nice and friendly. We headed here for brunch to meet friends. Place is larger than I thought with a large upstairs which looks as though it will be fun when the weather changes. We started brunch with a pitcher of pomegranate mimosas 28.00 decent price. It was 3/4 filled with ice and the juice appeared to have a funky taste. We mentioned to waitress the taste and she conferred the juice was recently changed and she would let them know. We didn't hear anything beyond that sort of odd. For meals we had the salmon blt, breakfast burrito, the bacon sliders , s'mores French toast and the warm donuts and chicken. So we had a good sampling of the menu. Judging by the table everyone seemed to enjoy the meal but everyone had a comment about their food. "Salmon seemed dry" , burrito was under seasoned and when they tried to cut it it was a mess, the bacon sliders were good but greasy , the s'mores French toast was good but super sweet. I had the donut and waffles . The menu did not specify it was chicken fingers so I had higher hopes, not to mention they tasted like fish probably from shared frying. It came plated very well. The spicy syrup add on was good and flavorful the biggest let down was the stale donuts that were used. You can heat up a stale donut but it's still stale tasting. All in all was a miss. I asked for what. he said it was "Trans Bingo Night" and I needed to have a ticket to sit at the bar. Grain can be described as "meh" at best. Decent spot for sandwiches and all-American fare, but nothing out of the ordinary if you're looking for a great dining experience. The hummus platter is a decent way to start the meal, or the giant crab and cheese pretzel if you're looking for quantity over everything (seriously, it's huge), but otherwise there's not much noteworthy about this restaurant. Mediocre food, and a higher price point for sandwiches - with so many restaurants popping up all around the Kennett area, I wouldn't recommend choosing this spot over anywhere else for a bite to eat. I recently gave Grain another shot and felt it was worth it to upgrade my rating. We stopped in with out-of-town guests after their trip to Longwood. It was a Saturday, but there were plenty of tables. There was live music, and the singer was fantastic. It also wasn't too loud--just perfect in the background, and we could still have a conversation. The best part of Grain, in my opinion, are the drinks (go figure!). They have a wide beer selection, and their "beer bible" makes it easy to choose a beer you'll like. I ordered something like a holiday mojito; it had sparkling cider, cinnamon whiskey, and mint. It was quite good! The part that's most lacking is still the food. We wanted a snack, and settled on the chicken nachos, which I found disappointing. There's almost no cheese, and the cheese that's on there is the preservative-laden nacho cheese. For a real restaurant, I'd expect some real cheese that's been melted. There were not enough toppings for the chips, and I found the chicken to be bland (although another in the group remarked that she thought the chicken was the best part). The chicken was also cold, which is fine, but wasn't really what I was expecting from a warm appetizer. On the plus side, they did come out really fast. Also, our server was really attentive. Basically, this is an okay place, but nothing special. It's a bar, with food if you get hungry. I might be back if it's convenient, but there are so other bars in Kennett that have good food, so Grain remains at the bottom of my list. read more

Grain is very cool and trendy inside. The food looks very appealing, yet is just OK tasting. The alcohol selection is wonderful as well with many Philadelphia regional selections and well curated whiskey and scotch roster. As stated the interior is inviting to a hip crowd, and very clean. Wait staff is also nice and relatively knowledgeable about the beer selection. They are open quite late but it was not busy at all around 7 when we ate. Ordered meat cheese board, fried pickles and the Cobb salad. Our daughter had chicken fingers and fries. Loved the cheese platter and fried pickles. Wasn't a fan of the Cobb salad. Girls night out! We sat on the roof deck which was enclosed for winter. It was very relaxed and we're looking forward to going back in better weather! Our waiter was fabulous. He was honest about the food and provided great service. I had the mahi mahi tacos which were delicious - nice spice level and creamy guacamole with mango salsa to cool it all down. We were steered away from the roasted carrots and got the cauliflower instead which was yummy. A great healthy meal although the burgers and fried avocados looked amazing too. Waited 45 mins for lunch after stating numerous times to the staff we were on a time crunch. I had to personally go into the kitchen to pay my bill because no one would come back to check on our table. It was almost comical the lack of attention we got for an empty place. There were more workers than customers and those workers looked to care more about socializing with each other than tending to paying customers. I had to take my food to go. Next time I'll save $50 and go to McDonalds. Day 2 Wed - wife convinced me to give them a second chance. It was just the 2 of us and it was a dinner time. Ordered 2 mixed drinks that were absolutely undrinkable. Wife ended up ordering a beer (figured they couldn't screw it up). Ordered 2 appetizers. Took almost an hour. Unbelievable. Server was sooooo sweet. We felt bad for her. She kept apologizing for the delay. Not her fault at all. When the mushrooms and brussel sprouts arrived they were uneatable. We didn't even eat it. Had to ask for the manager. Manager was apologetic and took the food off the bill, but never addressed the poor service or food from the kitchen. I've lived in Philly for years but this is easily the single best cheesesteak I've ever had. The bread is soft yet the outside is slightly crunchy. The meat was juicy and not greasy.
