This is our second try of this restaurant. Our first visit provided a mediocre experience. This visit was far less impressive. Service was lacking and not very friendly. First, our appetizer was delivered with the entrees. One of our dishes was cold and needed to be sent back. The queso tasted like it came from a can. One item was not delivered with the order and needed to be requested. Granted, any of these things are expected to happen on occasion. We didn't have a great experience the first visit so we thought we would give this restaurant a second chance. We were told to seat ourselves. We did. A long wait again, to be waited on. Many regulars seated at the bar. All the service was going on there. We were the only patrons in the rest of the restaurant. We asked for a small queso to enjoy with our chips while we looked through the menu. We did not see the queso until the server brought our food. She said "I forgot to tell her to wait on the food". The queso was like a very thick pudding and tasted like it was out of a #10 can. Awful. 8.95 and server did not ask why we had not eaten it. Chicken verdes enchiladas were just ok. Chicken was dry and very little verde sauce. We will not be dining at El Ranchero again. Sadly, the server did not seem to care at all about our experience or if we needed anything. Came here last night to meet up with a friend. I'm very glad I decided to stop by because ever since they got a new bar, I've been meaning to come to El Ranchero. I ordered the guava margarita and mango mojito. Both were good, but I preferred the mojito! My friend ordered the hurrache with steak and he really enjoyed it. We had the Molcajete and the ceviche and they were really good. The food came out quick but our server was nowhere to be found. We would have had another round of drinks, but our server was no where to be found. Went to look for her more than once and found her on the other side of the restaurant just standing there. The food is divine! My friends and are slowly trying everything on the menu. We order through DoorDash so we have never been in the restaurant but the food is outrageously good. We've sampled the guacamole, the choriqueso, the taquitos, burritos, chimichangas, quesadillas, huaraches, and more. We love El Ranchero. We used to go her all the tines years ago, but just rediscovered it while in Kennett. They have really cool artwork and aesthetic inside. The food is delicious and well priced. We've only ever had the same waitress every tine we've gone and she works her tail off servicing the entire restaurant by herself every time we're there. YUM. Because I grew up in Southern California, I like to think I know a thing or two about good Mexican food, and this is good Mexican food. My mom, who has spent even more time in Southern California than I have, agrees. (So does my husband, who knows very little about good Mexican food.) We had some enchiladas, some flautas, some burritos, some quesadillas... all fantastic. Especially the enchiladas. Chips and salsa were addictive too, although one of the salsa varieties is apparently VERY spicy. Took a really, really--like COMICALLY--long time to get our check and pay, but oh well. After a Sunday morning of visiting Longwood Gardens, we were thinking Mexican for some unknown reason (maybe because it's tough to find in South Jersey). We took a chance on Ranchero El and were very pleased with what we found. It has obviously moved pretty recently into fresh and spacious digs (the sign is still up over its old site a few spaces away in the little strip mall). We were the only "gringos" in the place -- always a good sign. Our meals were preceded by the usual pico de gallo and chips which were very good. We didn't want huge meals and were pleased to find the lunch menu is served on Sundays. Both of our meals were excellent -- great flavor and not at all greasy. The corn tortillas I chose to go with my chile rellenos tasted homemade. The mini burritos meal my husband chose were also quite tasty, and filled with chicken and really delicious refried beans. Service was quite pleasant and efficient -- no language problems here. All-in-all our visit to this restaurant was memorable and we look forward to returning after our next visit to Longwood. read more

This place was recommended by a friend who lives Kennett Square. We are from Texas and it has been hard finding authentic Mexican food. While On The Border is okay, real Mexican food is just plain to find, I can say this since I am half Mexican. What made this place for me? Homemade horchata (Rice milk). I crave this drink every time I enter a Mexican restaurant but it is never fresh. This was wonderful and flavorful. My husband asked for one to-go. My mother-in-law and I shared 2 plates. She ordered sopes with chicken tinga and I ordered gorditas with carne asada. Those were very good and fresh. They used queso fresco too! Once again we went for dinner this week, the food was great but there wasn't a chance of the waitress checking on us. Today I was remembering how delicious the homemade salsa was so I decided to call and see if I could purchase some. What a CRAZY idea! I was quickly answered with a "what"? The kind of what that is kinda like... Why would we sell our salsa. After repeating myself I was answered with a definitive no, and no other dialog, I guess the call was over. Terrible - out server couldn't speak to us - barely spoke English. A bother sever had to come back and confirm our order..... After the food was served , we never saw our server again. Had to ask someone else for more iced tea. Had to go to front desk to pay since we never got a ticket , but seemed alittle high for lunch. When I asked to see a reciept everyone pretended to jot understand me and had to someone else. That girl came out and said " what's the problem". ! No problem just asking for a actual bill . We ordered from the lunch menu at 130pm.... But got server a dinner . Then we were informed the $.825 lunch menu wasn't good on Sunday's is was now $13.50. Mediocre food combined with slow service is no way to go through life son. Kennett Square Mexican is a pretty high bar with Morleone and others to live up to. This place just falls short in flavor, selection and service. We went for lunch as we had never been. The red ranchera sauce was bland and so was the green. The rice had been made days before. I am not much of a Mexican Food lover but this place is great. The only one I go to. Only place I found Ceviche which I love. They do a great job - Ceviche Tostada - only $4.00. You have to try it. Best Ceviche I have found from Kenneth Square to Philly. Other foods are reasonable and good. Bring your own beer or wine. I usually order the beef Fajita and never been disappointed. But I am not too curious about other wraps and things. If you go off prime time, it is usually very empty so you get good service. Prices are right. At prime times you might have to wait but the restaurant is pretty big so there is a lot of seating read more

The other review about El Ranchero being a hole in the wall is 'way out of date. They expanded and renovated beautifully. It's now a very attractive place to eat with good food, reasonably priced. It's a family-owned business, run by local folks from Mexico, and a lot of Latinos eat there, so I am guessing that the food is authentic, too. A great choice for lunch or dinner. read more

We stopped in mid Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. Place was practically empty. Very slow, albeit friendly service. I think our server could benefit from some training - let drink glasses and chips basket go empty despite long wait for our order - seemed to disappear. Food was really good when it finally arrived. In-house made tortillas were excellent. I give food 4-5 stars and service 1-2 stars. If you're not in a hurry and want good Mexican food, this is a place to go. read more

BYOB. There is a nice atmosphere here, which sets it off from most Mexican restaurants in the Kennett area. Lots of décor, although Spanish-language TV is also running and that may not be to your liking. I have eaten here four times in last couple years; the food comes in large amounts, it has always been tasty, and the waitresses have always treated me well. Been here solo, been as a couple. I have brought a book here and sat and read with my dinner and for a little afterwards; no one has bothered me or even given me a second look. I haven't pushed my orders into major new taste-test areas, but I am ready to next time. The 4-star "Yay I am a fan" does describe my feelings about El Ranchero. Last dinner, fish tacos brought three well-stuffed soft tortillas, satisfied me well. Parking is easy in lot outside front door. read more
