The negative reviews here are kind of baffling. My friend and I each ordered a cocktail, and we split a chicken cheesesteak with fries. Both were a solid 4 out of 5 stars (and I'm pretty picky about cocktails). Our bartender was friendly and spent a good bit of time chatting and answering our questions. The vibe is casual, but it's clean and comfortable and attractive. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to try some other menu items. read more

2 stars because of the bartender! Very friendly and honest about their menu. My friend and I were about to get the crab nachos but she derailed that. We went with the regular nachos. Someone please tell me that wasn't canned chicken!? It smelled like tuna and tasted like watered down shredded chicken...ie...canned chicken. These were like "let's make nachos" home quality. Minus the chicken. Please tell me that wasn't canned Grain!? The cheese had zero flavor. Still hungry, we ordered the Chick-a-rones. The bartender tried steering me away but crispy boneless chicken sounded delicious. These were gross. Almost no meat was present. They tasted like over friend chicken skin. Eeeeeek. They were returned and she brought out regular buffalo wings. Good look. On the bright side, the blue cheese was very good and the wings were pretty good as well. We went to the Kennett Square (KSQ) location after a night at Longwood Gardens, January 7, 2018 We wanted a good burger and knew that the Newark location never disappointed. The difference between the Newark location and the KSQ location is like night and day. The food at KSQ was mediocre - at best. We started with the calamari which was too heavy with batter, for our taste. We did the Build Your Own Burger (BYOB) and ordered them at a medium temperature. We had some additions such as: bacon, tater tots, & sweet potato fries. We also ordered two house salads. Food. We ate the calamari & chalked it up to "we didn't ask the right questions", as we asked if it was lightly fried, but didn't ask if it was lightly battered. Our fault. The food came out pretty much all at once; we were still eating the calamari when the house salads and the burgers came out. We put the salads aside and started on the burgers. The burgers were not medium temperature, they were well done. The quality of the beef wasn't that great either; lower mid-grade I would say. The bacon on my burger was obviously microwaved & felt like it was plastic. My tater tots were good, but then again, I don't think I've ever met a tater tot I didn't like. My friend's sweet potato fries were too well done, on the verge of being burnt. They definitely fried the flavor right out of them. We never did get to the salads, we boxed them to go. Service. When we first walked in, there were @ 6 people at the bar and 4 tables with 4 people at each table. They had 2 bartenders and 1 waitress staffed. A party of 7 was seated immediately after us. The waitress was in charge of all of the tables and she was running around like crazy while the two bartenders talked to each other. Our waitress was nice, but a bit frazzled. We found it odd that one of the bartenders wouldn't offer to help, being that at that time, they weren't busy. By the time we left, every seat at the bar was occupied & 3 more tables were seated. Price. Way too expensive for the quality of the food we were served. Calamari, 2 house salads, 2 BYOBurgers (add bacon, tater tots, & sweet potato fries), Iced Tea, & 2 glasses of wine came to $78, not including the tip. I'd say the average rating here is pretty accurate. The food was decent. I had the blackened fish sandwich which was good (I found a hair in mine, not so good) and my wife had the impossible burger which she enjoyed but she had asked for the bbq sauce on the side and they put it on the burger. We also tried the chicken nachos (average 3/5: the guacamole was old and the taste was ok) and the brussel sprouts (very good 5/5). Service was ok, the heating system is sporadic if you're upstairs and the atmosphere was ok. I'd say that this is an average place. Would have been a 4/5 without the hair and bbq mishaps. read more

For the most part, it's alright. Dined here at random after a photo shoot at longwood gardens, and although I cannot say we fully regret the experience, it most certainly wasn't memorable at all. I had a salad and asked for the red onions to be taken out and for shrimp to be added. My friend had the caesar salad with chicken. To drink, we had waters and I had an iced tea. Without tip, that came out to be a tinge over $40. Not......worth that price at all. I was underwhelmed with my salad, but at least service was efficient and prompt. I'd suggest ordering one of their heartier meals, and I hear they offer an impressive array of beers. I might be back, but don't think I'll be in a hurry. read more

As a disclaimer, I have dined at the Newark De location many times, and have always been pleased. So I was more than a little disappointed with my Kennett Square experience. We came in for a late lunch on a Saturday. The hostess seated us quickly and told us who our waitress would be. Then the wait began. After 10-15 minutes another waitress approached, handed us waters, and apologized for the wait, saying our waitress would be right over. So the second wait started, another 5-10 minutes. My wife suggested that we just leave, but we had time in at this point and I said we should stay. Bad choice. Finally our waitress arrived and was going to take just a drink order, but we put the food in right away. I asked for one of their many IPAs. And then we sat and waited again. After ten minutes a can of beer was plopped down in front of me and out waitress dashed off before we could engage with her. No glass, just the can. Realizing it would achieve room temperature before we saw her again, I got up and approached the bar, asking the woman behind it for a glass and showing her the can. Her response was "When I get a chance". Admittedly she was putting ice in three glasses. But she was doing this about four steps from the glasses. And she proceeded to make three drinks involving crushing fresh fruit and multiple ingredients. Now I understand busy bars, having done some bartending in college. But I generally don't consider three people at the bar "busy". At any rate, after she finished the process she delivered the drinks and got me the glass. The good news is that at least I was not sitting and waiting for food, which was still missing. This food was a chicken salad sandwich with fries. So quick turnout for the kitchen. Still took forever and when it arrived we had soggy fries and a decent sandwich. We ate and wanted to get out quickly, but it took a while to get the check. The manager did come by immediately and offered to ring us out, so we assume he saw at least some of this. The chicken salad was good, and the sweet potato dipping sauce was very good. But that is it for positives. The regular fries were awful, and the fries are a highlight in Newark. The service - unacceptable. Needless to say we are not making another journey to Grain. read more

Truth be told, while we had a nice dinner, it wasn't Half Moon Cafe, which was truly a special place that had been in the location for years. We went in with an open mind and were hopeful, but it simply couldn't match up with what we have become accustomed to. The redesign is nice, and the place is more open, light and airy. The service was fine, and on a Saturday at the beginning of the dinner rush we were seated promptly and everyone was attentive. The beer list is somewhat less impressive than Half Moon had, as they had more draft choices but also less remarkable stuff. We started with the crabby pretzel and the OMG nachos...both were good, and we enjoyed. Alas, the crab nachos from Half Moon were among the better appetizers ANYWHERE so sadly these couldn't come close. Honestly, Kennett Brewing Company has better nachos. The pretzel was solid, though. Dinner wise both my lovely wife and I had lobster rolls, and they were good. Not exceptional, but good. Dessert was a pass glancing at the menu, and my wife enjoyed her cocktail. With Kennett being a solid 45 minutes from us, we would likely head to either Victory, Kennett Brewing, Two Stones or Taqueria Morleone the next time we are in town. A shame Half Moon had to close, it is a real loss. Maybe we will check out Grain again, it just had a whole lot to live up to and couldn't do it, at least not yet. read more

I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt but it failed to deliver in so many ways. I did like that (free) bingo is offered, so it provides some extra means of diversion. Unfortunately, that's about as far as "pros" go. Our blueberry-lavender mojito totally lacked flavor. It sounded so appealing, but on paper alone. Mashed blueberries were in the concoction, but I really couldn't appreciate much blueberry, lavender, or rum flavor. The kitchen apparently ran out of cheese sauce for the nachos. The waitress asked us if we wanted to order something else, skip it altogether, or be willing to let them use a different type of cheese. We opted to try the different type of cheese. She bypassed our table a number of times thereafter and it was very difficult getting her attention to place our dinner orders. When the nachos finally arrived, they were disappointing. I understand the original cheese sauce had run out but I think if they had just melted any type of cheese to drizzle over the nachos, our nachos would have tasted just fine. Unfortunately, the nachos were just piled with nonmelted shredded cheddar and parmesan cheese and really didn't deliver for me. My turkey burger was much too salty. The waitress never bothered to ask if we wanted fries with our sandwich and instead, assumed we all did. Fries were an additional $2/plate. Had I been asked whether I wanted fries, I would have certainly said no. By the time the bill came and I saw this, I felt past the point of arguing. My other half found someone's cellphone in the bathroom and kindly brought it over to the bartender (since no wait staff were easily locatable, as per my point above). You would think she would at least be polite about it but was just told coldly to "leave it on the counter." As I mentioned, I did like the free bingo but the service and food were just very disappointing and I would not come back. read more

Not sure of why so many negative reviews. IMHO any place with good beer and food deserves better. Many reviews were right after the place opened, give them a break. Open only 6 months I think they are getting the hang of it. Most folks just miss Blue Moon. Well this is a bar, that was, I don't know, a place to eat weird food in a bar. If you come to this place looking for odd selections like buffalo cheese crisps or chopped kale stuffed peppers with gourmand cheeses and avocado head elsewhere. Good variations of bar food ( interesting wings along with staples, a good burger with fixings) is all you will get here. Deal with it for gosh sakes, you live in Kennett PA the mushroom capital of the world, not the home of the Louvre. read more

My cheesesteaks have always been great here, but the last few I have gotten have been all bread and very little meat. If you charge 13 dollars for an 9 inch cheesesteak, you have to deliver. I really want to love it here and maybe it's just growing pains but in my opinion this version of Grain is just Ok. The food is consistent with the Grain in Newark, which is great for bar food. My issue is the cocktails. They are not as consistent. Of the 3 times I've gone only once were the drinks worth the money. Last time we went my friend go a drink with almost no vodka in it. My purpose for posting is to let the management know so they can address the issue. I'd love to have a go to KSQ location that I go to frequently and will come back to give you another chance or two or three. read more

Went to Grain around 11pm on a Friday night. Live music with one man playing guitar and singing - not bad. Good sized bar serving a full menu until midnight. I had water and a Caesar salad. Salad was typical but the croutons were thin slices of toasted artisan bread. My friend ordered the meat and cheese board. He let me have the bleu cheese stuffed olives ( salt lovers dream! ) and the dill pickle slices. Two kinds of cheese, 2 kinds of meat, 2 spreads, and thin wafers on the board. He scarfed it all down so it must have been good! The bar is in the front of the building, restaurant seating in the rear, with an upstairs bar also. Ladies room was far too filthy for a small bar. I write this review from Kennett Brewing Company after waiting 1 hr 15 mins at Grain without ever being served our meal. We ultimately had to come up with backup Mother's Day brunch plans. I do regret not taking the other Yelp reviews more seriously and I should have known things were not going to go well when the waitress's greeting was "So I guess no one has come to wait on you yet." The Grain Bloody Mary was good. Unfortunately the olive was not blue cheese stuffed as mentioned on the menu but I can deal. Good beer list too. I feel bad for the server having to cover for the slow kitchen, but she never mentioned anything to us about a delay or with apologies or anything so my sympathy only goes so far. We did, however, hear her extending apologies to other diners complaining about the wait. I overheard the waitress mention the kitchen was "slammed" yet, there were a number of empty tables in the restaurant and only 2 ppl at the bar. We weren't the only table to have gotten up to leave after 1 hour plus with no food. I can even understand it if we have complex orders...but we ordered a breakfast burrito, omelette and pancakes. Lesson learned. These aren't just growing pains from a restaurant that just hit their 1 year anniversary. There's a more systemic problem here. Update: as of last season it seems as though they don't have Sunday Ticket anymore - a shame, because I used to come here every week. love to come here on Sundays for football. They have NFL Sunday Ticket and a great beer menu to choose from. During Eagles games there's a raffle with giveaways based on beer specials. Danielle behind the bar is awesome and super helpful! I had high hopes for Grain coming to Kennett after hearing great reviews of the Newark location. We went a few weeks after it opened it give it some time to get their feet underneath them, but they were definitely not on par. The front of the house was Terrible, after taking us from the hostess she said nothing as she led us to the table and dropped on menus and left. We waited no less then 15 minutes for our waiter to lumber over and ask us if wanted water. After ordering a beer I watched it sit on the bar for a good 5 minutes before it was picked up and delivered to the table. After this poor start we just ordered some nachos and snacks and everything was just average. I would equate the food to a low end chain restaurant. I will probably return to give it another try in a year, if that is, it's​ still in business. read more

(KSQ) I feel for the wait staff, I really do. I've been here twice with my family, and both times I waited a long time for food to arrive, and was very disappointed. I've had lukewarm watery rice, dry reheated wings, limp salad. I've heard brunch is good, but it can't be good enough to make up for a poorly managed kitchen. We've enjoyed sitting upstairs overlooking Kennett, so maybe just get a beer and enjoy that. read more

So we have been at least 4 times since opening. Atmosphere and drinks good. Food is spotty. Never had a great meal just okay. A couple of visits the bartender would even steer us away from menu choices. It actually became a joke with us. Last visit food was very okay. Chips were stale on nachos. After coming here with my family, I felt the need to update my review. While I still find the service to be quite lackluster, our food was delicious. The upper deck creates for a great view and if they weather is nice, I highly recommend trying to sit up there. There is live music every Thursday-Saturday and the musicians do an awesome job. Even when there is no live music, the person on the aux provides sweet tunes. This place is great for spending a night out with friends or grabbing a meal with the family. read more

7 of us ate here last week, the only reason for the 2 stars was our waiter Ryan was awesome, otherwise I would have given them 1 stars. He was very professional, knew the menu and beers and made good recommendations. He checked back often and promptly settled our check as we had a show to attend. I had the Blacken Grouper sandwich which was below par. The sandwich cost $14 plus $2 for FF - for this I should have received a nice piece of 4-6 oz. of grouper. What I received was 2 very small thin pieces, probably the tail cut off of a weighted dinner portion. I can understand that, but for $14, put some meat on my sandwich. Most of the other sandwiches were good tasting, but portions were small. Cheese burger w/FF - $15 dollars, Duck Reuben w/FF - $17. Went for new years eve and the service was not good. The group of us were told we could have a table and order off the bar. The next thing we know a manager comes up to us and starts yelling at us to sit down and wait for a server. We had never experienced anything like this before. We complained to another manager about him and she didn't seem to care. First impression is what counts and we will never go there again! read more

It was my second try. Terrible experience the first time. I ordered a Cuban. It consisted of a Kaiser roll turned inside out with hardly anything in it. They apologized and said it was prepped at 8am and never checked (it was 8pm). . Service was also slow, but it had only been open about a month so I didn't mind at that time. This week I was upstairs again. Service was awful. I had to approach the bar several times to order nachos. The nachos came out fast but were cold and soggy. I had to approach the bar again to get the bill. Was gonna pay by cc, but no one came to collect the bill and my cc so I just used cash and put it on the bar. The first time, I understand the service but no excuse for bad food bc there are already two other successful restaurants. Very disappointed.... have eaten at Grain on past occasions ...even attended a birthday party there. Tried to get a reservation for six adults and four children for Sunday, June 28... Celebrating my birthday... They wouldn't take a reservation. Preferred the outdoor rooftop seating... 4:30 PM... they said because PA. is in the "green" phase ...couldn't take reservations but told me to call 15 minutes in advance on Sunday and they would PUT ME ON THEIR LIST... with no guaranteed sitting time. With four young children you want to be able to have a reservation, sit down, get in and out as soon as you can. Won't be going back there ever! VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Sometimes common sense should prevail. Your loss Grain...BIG TIME!! read more
