They provided an appointment time. Later they let me know they were running ahead of schedule and were on their way (great communication). The crew was pleasant and professional and easy to work with. I paid a fair and competitive price (I got multiple bids and they were right down the middle). I think the value of a job well done made that just fine and I'm glad I didn't go with the lower bidder. As smooth of a process as I could've asked for. Reached out to Graham Tree Service (I called and emailed) and scheduled an appointment for Graham to come out and give me a quote. He arrived a little later than I was told he would, but it wasn't a big deal because I worked from home that day. Graham took a look at my trees and quoted me $1000 to trim and reshape my two out of control Japanese Maples in front of my house. I accepted and we scheduled a day for the trimmers to come out. Day of the appointment, the crew arrived a little early and immediately got to work. I don't think it took them more than an hour to get everything done and cleaned up well. They had me come out before they finished up to confirm that I liked the way everything looked, and they also did me the courtesy of removing a dead branch from one of the trees. The trees looked so much better when they were done, but they managed to preserve a lot of our shade cover, which I really appreciated. In the couple of months since the trimming, the trees have filled in nicely. These guys were professional, friendly, efficient, and fast, and left as soon as they arrived. We have worked with Ray Graham for many years and I don't know why I didn't previously post a review. I should have. Our whole neighborhood has even worked together to identify multiple trees at different people's houses and hired Graham's Tree Service to do them all at once for a discounted rate. Ray is super experienced, licensed, bonded, and insured. He has had the same crew for years and those guys really know what they're doing and clean up well after too. Today's events, however, are what caused me to finally give this long overdue review. At about 9 am today, another wet and windy day, a neighbor's giant old tree came crashing down (and uphill at an angle!). It crushed part of the the house next to ours and then landed on our house creating all kinds of damage. Ray and his guys and even their crane were on site in about an hour! That was before even PG&E got here to address the downed live power line! Once PG&E said it was OK, they had the tree sawed down and craned off our house and patched the holes in our roof. Then they quick moved to our neighbor's house. Ray even offered to deal directly with our respective insurance companies to be paid directly from them. Truly hassle free and I huge relief to our collective shock and stress. What a great guy and company! Six guys came out and helped trim back my Redwood trees, a huge Eugenia tree, 3 different Privets, a Loquat, a big Oak, and did a great job cleaning up my yard! I pointed out some areas that I wanted done a bit more, and they were very accommodating. I also noticed that a plank on my deck was damaged (likely from a branch that fell hard), and they magically found a replacement plank on their truck to repair it. I ended up not using Graham Tree Service, but I think for a crew that's fully insured, bonded, and has a crane, they are probably one of the most competitively priced out there. In the end, the price Graham Tree Service would have settled on was only $500 more than the crew I gave the job to and, let's be honest, that crew probably wasn't bonded and insured. But, I got lucky with another crew who wanted to start a job literally the day after they came to give me quote and so I jumped on the deal. But, for those who really feel more comfortable with a fully insured company and need big trees removed, then it's really worth giving Graham Tree Service a call. read more

The owner responded quickly for a quote but could knock down a quarter star for promising a Tuesday start date and not communicating to us some delays and the crew not showing until Friday. His crew was very professional and did a fantastic job of pruning and shaping our 30 foot oak and removing a 25 foot diseased Eugenia. Awesome workers, their communication skills ... not the best. BUT, go in knowing that and you'll be very happy! I'd hired another company to take down some Monterey Pines behind my house and trim back some trees in front and they were awful. Messy, disrespectful ... the worst! So, I knew I needed a truly professional crew to deal with a giant Monterey Pine that - thanks to our rainy winter - was in danger of falling on my house. Enter, Graham Tree Service. The price Ray quoted was lower than two other companies I spoke with, the crew was super professional, clean, respectful of me and my neighbors, and even brought signs - because we had to close the street for a bit - and we are SO happy with the results. I was never once scared that the massive pine or any of its' branches would hurt my house, which was not the case with the previous company we hired. As for the communication part, just know, Pam - their office manager - is super sweet, but somewhere in the line of communication ... whether it's between she and Ray ... or Ray and his crew ... there's a breakdown. I asked for a few days notice as to when they'd be available to take down my tree - so that I could ask for the day off from work - and she called the day before and told me they'd be there at 8am. Whoa whoa whoa ... no! I can't do tomorrow! I need a few days notice! ... Then on the day they were supposed to show up, I get a call at 930 saying they won't be arriving until noon, thus meaning they'd need to come back the following day - which was not expected - to finish the job. Then Ray needed the check the next night and I had left town on business, so ... none of that's a big deal to me, just wanted you to know, so that you don't get frustrated if you experience the same. All I cared about was the tree coming down safely and affordably and they did a GREAT job. I would definitely hire them again. read more

We just had a 70 foot redwood tree removed from our tiny yard in Oakland. The tree was a split leader monster that dropped big limbs whenever the wind blew. It was a difficult removal, in that the tree was inside a small fenced yard with no access, sandwiched between other trees and right on the fenceline. Graham quoted me a reasonable figure for the difficulty of the job. His crew removed it cleanly and efficiently, like a well orchestrated dance, masterfully manipulating a huge crane to lift each section of the tree out and chip it up into a waiting truck. they even dropped in a custom built stump grinder that accommodated itself to the tight space, and removed all trace of the tree. The friendly, skillful, no-messing-around crew made the whole difficult project seem painless and easy. It hurts to chop down a big tree, and it hurts to pay for it, but if it's got to be done, these guys are reasonable, professional and make you feel like they can do anything. read more

We had a very tall (over 4 stories) dying tree that needed to be removed. The tricky part was that it was located in a narrow area of our back garden near our neighbors' fence. I got three estimates and two were identical. I chose Graham because they had been recommended by a friend. They arrived at 8:30 am and finished by noon. The climber who removed the tree was extremely careful to avoid injury himself. All the work was completed and the area cleaned up and hauled away with no damage to the surrounding area. I live in Montclair and the day after July 4th, a Graham Tree Service truck was parked across the street from my home. When it was still there Monday morning, I left a voicemail asking for some idea when the truck would be removed. Within hours, I got a very polite, concerned voicemail from their office manager saying they received my message, were sorry the truck had been left there, and that the owner was on his way to take care of it. Sure enough, by 4pm the truck was gone. I was very surprised by their responsiveness, especially since I'm not even a paying customer. Once again Ray, Pam & Graham Tree Service comes through. The neighbors' beautiful Italian Stone Pine had a huge branch (2 feet in diameter) break off and damage another tree. HUGE incense cedar tree decided to take a nap on our neighbor's car/garage! OH NO!! They removed this tree in about 4 hrs, then came back later in the week to grind out the stump. I had a terrible experience with just making the appointment with Graham Tree Service. I wasted 2 mornings waiting for them. The first morning I called them after waiting for 2 hrs. They said they had no estimate appointments that morning and there must be a misunderstanding in setting up the appointment. So they agreed to come out the next morning at 11:30am. But again they never showed up and no one called. I was so furious I called and canceled the appointment because I had already lost faith in them. I'm a little surprised by the negative reviews. I just had Graham come out and remove a huge stump from the middle of my yard as well as four or five other small stumps... PLUS take down and remove a leaning section of another tree and I thought the price was pretty reasonable. Way better than Mr. Jimmy who took 4 visits to take down the tree in the first place. A large tree limb fell on our roof from a neighbor's tree and Ray Graham was referred to us to help remove it. Ray came by first thing in the morning to give a quote for removing the tree limb. He was on time and the price was very reasonable. I also asked for quotes to trim the tree and to remove the tree for the neighbors as they were out of the country. His crew came by a couple hours later to remove the limb and they did a good job being careful not to do further damage to the roof as they removed it. The neighbor decided to remove the tree and his crew promptly went to work on that after they were done at our house. The tree was in a particularly precarious spot between power lines and the house and the team handled it well. They did a good job cleaning up after. They're all nice guys to work with. I really don't like giving folks bad reviews unless they earn it...and in this case, Graham Tree Service earned their bad review honestly. I wrote to them for their "free" consultation and estimate. They returned my call a few days later and said they would like to schedule a time to come out that day. I called them back within an hour and spoke with the person who called me. She said that the estimator would be out later that afternoon. I waited and waited. Nobody came and nobody called. I thought I'd give them one more chance. My neighbor hired Graham Tree Service to work on a tree on the property line. Without even bothering to knock on my door to let me know, the workers completely took over my yard, climbed on top of my garage, and started to work. They bent the vent on the roof fan in my garage, so that I'm afraid to even turn it on because the fan blades may hit the sides. They knocked over a bunch of the plants in my garden, and they damaged a newly-planted fruit tree. They sprayed wood shavings absolutely everywhere. My garage filled up with wood pulp because they didn't cover the vents in the roof. I tried to call them multiple times to complain and they never answered. So basically, watch out, they could just completely screw up your yard and the yards of your neighbors. read more

I'm very recently had my huge redwood tree pruned by Grahams. Ray came out and took a look at my tree and gave me some great recommendations which were in line with the research that I had already done. A couple weeks later the crew showed up in the morning and gave my redwood tree a very nice and natural looking pruning. They even left me, on my request, a large amount of mulch that they already had in their truck ...great for my garden! The crew thoroughly cleaned up and were gone in about 3 hours. Graham Tree Service just took down several trees and planted new trees and several bushes, mulching the trees they had taken down as well. The came for the initial estimate on short notice, and picked up the new trees at a nursery for us. They even adjusted their schedule so we could take care of everything before a five-day stretch of rain hit the area. I was really impressed by Ray and the crew. They were such professionals, and they gave me advice on the optimal placement of everything, and how to not interfere with the irrigation system.
