Called to get an estimate to remove large tree at the side of my home in San Leandro. Tony came out promptly and provided an estimate within a day. He checked with the City to see if permit was required and notified PG&E to flag any potential problems when grinding stump. With the all clear they scheduled the removal. Tony & crew came to do tree work and started at 8 a.m. and done by 10 a.m. He did exactly as I asked especially given it wasn't the usual request of crown thinning or pruning of the tree. I had safety concerns with a large tree in my backyard. Called a couple of the larger tree companies first to get a tree safety/risk assessment from their certified arborists, and get estimates for both trimming and possibly cabling, and also tree removal costs. Both companies gave shockingly high estimates, (8-10k for removal, leaving the stump), twice the figure I had in mind. I had used AAA about 10 years ago to trim this same tree and their price was very fair at that time, so I then called them for quotes on this job. (They don't have a certified arborist/risk assessor, which is why I didn't call them first). Tony (the business owner) came by promptly, and we talked. Their quote was WAY lower and within the number range I was hoping for. Scheduled the work for removal, and they showed up about 15 minutes early on the assigned day. Great first impression. Abel was the climber/lead cutter, with his two man crew. I was super impressed with the precision they used in removing the upper large heavy limbs, and carefully lowering them to the ground while avoiding a shed and fence that were both within a few feet of the tree. No damage done whatsoever! The job took 1 1/2 days, and Abel told me that if not for the proximity of shed and fence, it would've been a one day job. I really appreciated the care and time they took! I requested that they leave the large stump intact at about a 36" height, so I could use it as a workbench/table. Tony came by and did the cutting on that part and did a pretty good job of leaving it pretty level and flat. They also did a great job of cleaning up the backyard and front street where their chipper truck was parked. No trash left anywhere. I had a dead walnut tree in my backyard that needed to be cut as the branches were rotting and falling. There were finches nesting in the hollows and I could hear chicks, so I waited till august (end of nesting season in CA) I had multiple arborists come and give me free quotes. Some were as high as $4000. These were all big names with lots of reviews and flashy websites. Then I contacted AAA Tree Service. They came over the next day to see the tree and gave me a quote immediately verbally and sent a formal one over email later. The quote was very reasonable given that I had a simple, no leaf tree, with little cleanup and no hauling (I chose to keep the wood) Hannah was very responsive over email and made sure I had the permit/permission to cut the tree. She even gave me the email addresses of the city officials to contact, who were equally responsive (replied in 2 hours. Who knew!) and they let me know that permit was not needed and to use this email as proof if any neighbors ask. We setup a date/2-hour window to cut the tree. No advance $ needed. 2 days before the date, I checked in and confirmed that we're still on schedule. On the big day, AAA arrived on time. In fact they came a bit early. The full force of 3 trucks and 2 trailers and a 4x4 etc. These guys are fully equipped to mow down a forest, and have everything from cranes to chippers to stump grinders and chainsaws of all sizes. A team of 4 started prepping and setting up. They were well coordinated and knew how to swing the branches off other branches to ensure the falling branch does not damage the fence or the neighbors shed etc. There was one snafu in the beginning where a branch shattered in two(rotten) and a part fell into the neighbors yard, but I do not fault them for this because they didn't know just how rotten this tree was. After that they were extra careful to let the branches down via rope and prevent shattering/breaking mid way. One guy was in the tree with spiked shoes and harness etc cutting the branches and 3 others were on the ground throwing him ropes, catching and clearing branches etc. Once all the branches were down and the main trunk was cut, the stump grinder guy brought the machine over and did his thing while the rest cleaned up. Within an hour they had everything done and then they packed up for the next appointment. They accepted personal check and there were no changes or surprises to the initial estimate cost. Overall, I am very happy and satisfied with what they did. Nobody got injured and nothing got damaged. The AAA convoy left and as a new homeowner doing my first major fix-up, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Hannah, Tony and the rest of their awesome crew have all been great and very professional and I recommend them highly! I don't miss the tree and can now work on improving my backyard. Some of the birds are still baffled as they swoop to the area and can't find a branch to land. They'll get over it. read more
