Lamb Murtabak, Dahl Kari and Teh Tarik
    Dinesh T.

I'm coming back again. My eternal search for good Malaysian, South Indian, Sri Lankan cuisine brought me to Gopal's Corner by Roti King in Victoria. Amazing. Next time I need a trip back to try the Banana Leaf Meal. Dahl Kari - possibly one of the best - hit all the right buttons. Lamb Murtabak - amazing - makes me want to try the Goat Kari next time. Teh Tarik did not disappoint either. Yeah!!!

    Lacksa. Spice my and tasty

Nice food and helpful at the register with even the more needy customers with questions.

Laksa and mutton curry banana leaf platter

It was my last day in London and I usually go to my favorite dim sum restaurant Orient for my last meal for the trip. Husband wants to show me some thing different and we came here instead. The food is outstanding and honestly I haven't been to Malaysia for at least 10 years and I do miss some good authentic Malaysian food. I had the laksa and husband had the mutton kari banana leaf platter. Both were really delicious. Would go back when next time I go back to London.

The food here is so good! We ate here on Saturday before catching a train from Victoria and it was so good, that when we returned on Sunday, we picked up food from here for dinner at home! I rarely go back to the same place in London to eat in a month, and I was back the next day! The food tastes much better if consumed fresh on site than if it's packed for takeaway The roti chinai we tried with dhal, chicken curry and beef rendang. My vote would be for the chicken curry. The first day we got a really large roti, on the second day we got a set of 2 smaller rotis. Murtabak - we tried the chicken and lamb. Lamb wins hands down! I also had the lamb curry thali and that is a complete meal. The veggies are seasonal and oh so yum! I was delighted to see king fish (sear fish) on the menu, so I had a slice of that as well. Such a fantastic taste of home. The masala dosa was fantastic. The chilled lemon honey drink was perfect on the side. The food is typical to Tamil Malaysian cooking with its blend of South Indian and Malay flavours. There may be a bit of a wait at peak times, but nothing like the queue outside the original roti king in Euston. And the seating at Victoria market halls (where this is located) is much more open and comfortable. Heavily recommended

Best vegetarian on the menu by far!

This a wonderful hidden gem right outside of Victoria Station inside Market Halls. For those who aren't aware of Market Halls, they're usually large buildings, pubs, library's etc. that have been converted to food halls serving up various dishes from around the world. Unlike Carnaby Streets equivalent 'halls', it's not so packed considering how mega busy the area is. Considering how packed it's main flagship branch Roti King (Euston) is, not mention it's closed on Sundays, this is the next best thing if you want Sri Lankan / Malay food (arguably even better). Menus simple, price is descent and food tastes fresh and gives you a feel good factor after you've been. Plus it's halal! Some of the condiments portions could be larger but it's kept small to get you returning back for more. Would recommend for sure.

Thea Tarik (black tea with milk and sugar pulled)

Their pulled milk tea (Thea Tarik) is sweet and hearty. Equivalent of Indian chai sans spices, enough to wake you up after a good lunch without giving you heart burn.

    Rendang beef curry meal
    Randall H.

Rendang beef curry--oh yeah. I don't often see it on the menu at South Indian/Sri Lankan places but they have it here. The quality wasn't gourmet, but was very good. It came with two "veg of the day" sides, which were tasty and nicely complementary; also rice and crispy bread of some sort. It's in a hipster food court which gets CRAZY busy in the after work/dinner hour, so one has to troll for seats. There's a bar where you can grab a drink, and you could mix and match various ethnic foods from various vendors if you wanted. Yum.

    Roti plate with chicken
    GREG S.

Ordered the Chicken and Roti plate ... excellent Malay style curry with freshly prepared melt-in-your-mouth Roti flatbread. Price was reasonable and under 9 GBP. The only downside is finding a table at the busy and noisy food hall during dinner. If I was in the area of Victoria Station then I would certainly return and recommend this counter-serve cafe highly

Finished off the plate of mutton varuval. Wish I had room to try the Kari laksa

A lovely choice of location, a classy American style diner like pub with its leather booth seating, dark walnut wooden tables and floor against sleek green tiled walls. Gives the place a very warm comfortable atmosphere. Herbal grass jelly drink and Teh Terik The herbal grass jelly was incredibly refreshing for a hot Summer's day. A good light dose of the bitter herbal taste and nicely balanced out by the sweetness. The firm springy jelly pieces added a lovely texture to the drink making it more interesting than your usual drink. Teh Tarik was probably one of the weakest ones I've had in London. It tasted no difference to your average milky Assam tea, lacking foaminess and richness from the condensed milk to provide that velvety texture it needed Vadai Kerepak Lentil fritters had an interested texture, almost similar to couscous. Nicely pan fried created a lovely crisp and crunchy texture into a slightly more softer interior. Sadly it lacked flavour and was slightly on the salty side. The lentils could have been mixed with other ingredients and spices in there to give a better bite and for more flavour. The tomato chutney was quite tangy and added a nice heat to it along with the sweet picked onions but not enough to make it a memorable dish Prawn Kerabu noodle salad Once again this succeeded better in texture than flavour. Firstly it was quite a dry dish so I couldn't help but felt like it could have been wetter (more fish sauce and lime dressing) so the flavours could have diffused more across the dish. It was quite moisture sucking from all the dry ingredients in there to make the dish. It was very refreshing though and the prawns were nice and plump which made a welcomed contrast to the rougher texture of the dish. Kari Laksa Ayam Luckily the mains out shone everything else and I honesty say that it's the best laksa I've had in London. The only thing that let it down was the overcooked chicken that became dry and dense in the process. However it was a minor issue compared to how delicious this laksa was. The flavours were bold and strong yet seasoned perfectly. It had the depth and the heat keeping my tongue buzzing from all the different spices. The soup itself was thick and creamy from the long simmering process of the coconut milk, coconut cream and homemade chicken broth made from broiler chicken in there to give it that gelatinous consistency too. The mix of both rice vermicelli and thick egg noodles was clever. Egg noodles added a lovely al dente texture to the dish whilst the rice noodles cling onto the laksa better, bringing in the flavour in each bite. Tofu puffs also added like a sponge as well as giving the dish a more chewier bite so the flavours linger longer. Kari Laksa Udang Much similar to the other laksa, the prawns here were also slightly overcooked so it lost some of its springiness. But once again it was very minor compared to how flavoursome the laksa was and the perfection of all the other textures in there. It was very interesting to have green beans in there giving a slight crunch as well as holding done laksa in there. We learnt that all the vital ingredients of the laksa was made from scratch, from the chicken broth to the laksa paste itself, made a day in advance so the flavours released. It's that dedication that gives the dish its complexity and richness. The spiciness creeps in slowly so have some tissues prepared. Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Quite an average dish to be honest, falling behind the quality of the laksa. The chicken was deep fried from the dried pieces of chicken breast, most likely from the old hen they used to make the broth. Therefore the meat inside wasn't very tender, quite dry and stringy. The batter was quite plain and needed some spice in there. Luckily the sweet peanut sauce added a lovely nutty sweetness to it but only wish there could be more of it. It became quite dry and bland dish after the sauce was used up with only the roasted peanuts and cucumbers in there to add some taste and break the stodginess of the dish. I was lucky enough to have some extra soup from the laksa to have with this dish to make it more enticing to eat it. In all honesty I believe Sambal Shiok does offer the best laksa in London. Not many restaurants invest so much time in making the laksa paste themselves hence why the flavours and complexity you get here is one of a kind and like no other laksa you have ever tasted in London. Sadly none of the other non laksa dishes we ordered was anywhere near as good and was actually more a let down. But for their laksa alone I am willing to come back many times over hence why I'm giving this 4 stars.

It's not a large restaurant - seats about 30 pax and I had no problem getting a seat for lunch on Sunday. But I have seen the place very busy even at 9pm on a Friday so it is popular. When I was there, most of the diners were Malaysian so clearly the food is authentic and the prices reasonable. And all this was true when I was there. I had nasi lemak Tukdin, oxtail soup, keropok and Ice Bandung - all Malaysian hawker staples / favourites. Food presentation was good and the food was tasty and authentic overall. The nasi lemak rice was particularly flavorful - full of coconut milk flavor, it had the right texture and basmati rice was used so the grains are drier and more discrete, giving a better mouthfeel. The keropok was crispy and tasted authentic, as did the ikan bills (fried anchovies) and fried chicken in the nasi lemak. The oxtail soup tasted exactly as it is in Malaysia with all the right spices and fried onions (which was FANTASTIC) and the meat was flavorful and 'fall off the bone' tender. Service was friendly if a little slow, but I think there's only 1 wait staff for all the patrons so be patient. All in all, a very pleasant experience and I would recommend coming here for a very inexpensive and authentic experience of Malaysian food in London. For Malaysians, definitely a must!

Run by a couple of lovely ladies, who were so helpful, it felt like we were in a Malaysian aunties home being fed with so much affection. The beef rendang was the star of the show for me, beautifully roasted coconut ground into a rich complex paste, cooked slowly over time. Slurp! They don't have plain rice, so they recommended nasi lemak to go with it. The coconut rice was lovely, but the fried anchovies were left almost untouched as I had all my rice with the rendang. He loved his Tom yum soup. Given the rainy weather, he was looking for a spicy soup to clear his head. He is willing to go back here, just for the soup. Warning : soup quantity is huge. It's a meal in itself. Also, it's super spicy. He had ordered the nasi goreng ibu. Mixed fried rice with fried chicken. The chicken was very soft and beautifully cooked, but I'll stick to the rendang, thank you very much No matter how much the rain may try to trick me, this is supposed to be summer in London, so I had the litchi juice and was pleasantly surprised to discover whole seeded litchis in my juice. For dessert we had bubur pulut hitam - Black rice pudding in coconut milk and ais kacang abc a sundae of sorts. We marvelled at the similarity in construction to the Philippino dessert halo halo. In my opinion, there are 2 main things to know about Dishoom: it's an Indian restaurant that is a chain, with 11 locations worldwide. The food is really good for a chain, bit it doesn't begin to come close to a restaurant that takes care of of its individual customers. Walking in, there's lots of energy. People are having a good time, there's no question. We were seated upstairs where there must have been around 40 tables. All of the staff are walking around in a hurry, cause everything here is in a hurry. The intention is to get you our in less than an hour. They want you in, through, and out. I saw this with multiple tables. Our server Yanko came to our table quite promptly and helped us make selections, both for food and drinks. For the first time in my experience eating in a restaurant, the appetizers arrived minutes before our cocktails. They came so fast that we didn't even think it was our order. And then moments after the drinks arrived, all of the main dishes and sides were placed on the table. With no way to keep anything warm. All of this with 10 minutes of placing the order. I appreciate prompt service, but this takes it to an absurd extreme. Our appetizers included the house Chaat and prawn koliwada. I enjoyed the prawns more but the flavors were facile, not close to what I expect and have enjoyed in excellent Indian restaurants. The main dishes were the Goan monkfish curry and Sali Goan. These were also just OK, absolutely nothing special. The cheese naan was soggy, though the flavor was good. This was an unacceptable texture for a naan. Dessert was Basmati Kheer, flavorful Basmati rice with fruit compote on top. In between and unneeded, was a thin layer of creme brulee. I did enjoy my tea: ginger, lemon and honey and my wife liked her mint tea. I do not know the restaurant scene in Edinburgh, we've been here for 4 days. But this is just not a place I'deven consider returning to. It's really a factory that feeds folks, not a restaurant that cares for its customers. The business model had been optimized to maximize income with lots of throughput. What's been almost completely lost in my opinion, is the heart and soul of the dining experience.
