We ordered the turkey club sandwich and the Friday-only meatloaf. The sandwich had a generous amount of real turkey, and the meatloaf was very tender. The gravy was also tasty. Was I blown away? Not quite--I've had better versions of both elsewhere--but it was solid, comforting diner food. Portions were large and prices were reasonable. Cash only. Thanks for 70 years of service!

The menu may be basic but it delivers with a big bang. I am basic with eggs and toast (sometimes with bacon) and coffee. What I get on plate is always perfect for me (crispy bacon, delicious home fries, and well buttered toast). I see other customers getting pancakes and sandwiches and their plates are always cleaned up. I've only seen other customers being satisfied. Of note, this place is busy on the weekends and since their seating is booths, large groups will have to split up; singles can easily slide into the bar stool area; they have smaller booths for two. Being quite the institution (they been a filming location for several shows and movies) they even have merch!!

The service is a little slow. For lunch we have one waitress who was excellent, but was the only one taking care of the entire place. The bills at the end were a little messy when they came out, but she was good. The food also took some time. We ordered two burger plates and one chicken souvlaki. The cheese burger was pretty standard so were the fries. So was the mushroom melt. It did taste like it was homemade which is refreshing. The chicken souvlaki had a ton of minute rice that came with it, and two little skewers of chicken. Which there was a little more meat and less carbs in this plate. It's a nice little spot if you need a break during the day. Good shade, and good patio.

Kid's menu was pretty standard, nothing extrodinary nor negative. The gordo's standard had great sunny side up eggs that somehow was able to fully cook all the white, but left the yolks just barely cooked. The sausage was good, but the bacon was huge, crispy, and had the best balance between crisp, with the chewy porky meat. What really surprised me was the hot beef. The beef was thick slices that were tender and huge portioned, and I loved how the bread was left under to soak up the juices from the beef....and to mop up the gravy. The veg which I expected to be just blanched and bland.....had a decent crunch, and really benfited from mixing from some HP sauce. Next time......pancakes with swirls.

Sadly there was no chair for her to sit down on yet it didn't stop her from going to her regular spot for a Sunday brunch. She told me that she has been coming here for many years, even before it was called Sammy's. Has it been 30 years, she asked herself? Either way, she made it known that she is quite the regular. Very nice and friendly lady. These are the types of regulars that make the diner what it is. There is a sign in clipboard at the front, as soon as you walk in. You have to sign in as part of contact tracing in case there is an outbreak of COVID linked back to this establishment. Make sure you do not block the pathway from behind the bar, I didn't block it but a large family with several kids needed a place to stand in line and wait for a big table, because servers will get very mad at you and tell you "I NEED TO GET BY! DON'T BLOCK THE WAY!" But there is no where to stand when the lineup is 20 people deep. This is something to think about once the weather gets colder and there is a long lineup out the door. Perhaps takeout would be a better option than to be yelled at by the short haired waitress with tattoos? While I did not mind waiting and I had a book to occupy my time in the lineup and at the table before I was given the menu, I could see that this was obviously a rush time, prime time lunchtime at the diner, maybe others might be a little more impatient than me? I could watch a snail crawl for hours, patience is a virtue. The wait is very long to get seated and even longer to get food. While the food was pretty good, and the other server was very friendly, attentive and nice, I think they were short staffed that day and nothing is ever as instant as fast food. My advice would be to go here when you have the time to wait. Don't come here if you are in a rush. It's better to only come here when you have lots of time to wait.

Sammy's has warm, welcoming and hard-working staff; they seemed genuinely happy to be working there. The food is diner quality, except for the flaming saganaki OPA! Lovely ambiance with the sociable patrons, comfortable booths and lovely decor (please see pics). WE ORDERED: - Liver and onions with bacon was pretty good; judging by the comments made by hubby, we will be coming back for this. - Side Salad - lettuce was limp, not the freshest. I would recommend getting a different side. - Saganaki - not only was this a yummy appetizer, the show was entertaining. Just make sure to let the staff know if you want to takes pictures or take a video beforehand; I forgot to tell our waitress, so by the time I whipped out my camera, the show was over. Oh well, live and learn.

We came on a Friday night close to closing, so it wasn't terribly busy. The place was clean, bright, and fairly spacious. The menu offered classic diner type options. The breakfast burger was excellent. It was juicy and flavorful. The corned beef Benny was also really good. You get three poached eggs on two toasted English muffins along with the corned beef. Home-style fries were also quite good. The French onion soup was tasty and not too salty. Not five star restaurant standards but pretty good considering this is a local diner. The Reuben sandwich was also tasty and juicy. The hamburger steak was the only dish that didn't live up to the hype. The burger steak itself was overcooked and dry. The gravy that accompanied it was on the saltier side and the mashed potatoes tasted bland. I suppose you could just mix the gravy with the mashed potatoes to try and balance out the flavors. Aside from the one dish that wasn't that great, everything else was enjoyable. We will definitely come back and try some of their other dishes.

We had the corned beef breakfast and the large souvlaki plate, and both have fed us for three meals now. The souvlaki is made by an actual Greek person, and truly, it can give the Danforth a run for its money! I really liked the rice; it was especially flavourful. It has a great classic 50's American style ambiance, complete with posters, paraphernalia and non-working jukeboxes. Some people think that the jukeboxes work because I found a quarter stuck on top of one once. (I don't check the jukeboxes each time I go though, there may be more stuck quarters there). The colour scheme puts you in a joyous mood and the all day breakfast is outstanding!!! I honestly would have given this a five stars, but one of my loves, the home fries seems to have changed. I so loved the old home fries' mix of herbs and spices, whatever it was that made it taste like amazing home fries, as well as the crunchiness on the outside coupled with the soft texture on the inside. Another reason this place does not have a perfect rating is because, it seems, while seated at the back of the diner, did we not get such attentive service. I was dying for a coffee refill or two, but did not get any even after I was done my meal and was eyeing all the servers and waving my hands. So yea, quick coffee refills is really integral to good service. Anyway, about the home fries, the last home fries I had was mushy and just tasted like plain potato. I was not the only one who noticed as my companion also commented on it. I hope this was a one time thing and not a change of recipe!!! I super love the five star breakfast, but everything in the all day breakfast section of the menu is superb. Love the corned beef hash, omelettes, pancakes, still have to try the french toast, but based on the rest, I think they would be superb. Love the coffee, love the free refills. Love the portion. LOVED the home fries, that's now like a plain potato :(, but anyway, I still LOVE this place and I will continue going for my breakfast/brunch needs. One new thing that I guess all restaurants have now and Wimpy's has is the calories listed on the menu. I wonder if this had an impact on the flavour and texture of the home fries. Did they make it more "healthy" but sacrificed the flavour? Or was it just a one time thing, off day for the cook perhaps? I will find out as I will be coming back!!!
