I got the Earl Grey Milk Tea and my sister grabbed a Wintermelon Milk Tea. Both were really great and tasted the same as they did at other locations, so it was nice having the consistency in taste. Tucked away in the middle of Times Square is this cute and inviting Gong Cha! The store was super clean, welcoming, and the service was super quick! But where I have my qualms with Gong Cha is the quality of their drinks. We ordered around 6 drinks; I had ordered an oolong milk tea w/ grass jelly. The drink itself was not great. There was no underlying tea flavor, the sweetener tasted super artificial, and the grass jelly was too firm for my liking. Can't go anywhere without having a bubble or boba tea place! This one is a short walk from the main Times Square area across from the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Amazingly there was one person who did everything and he was quite efficient! I ordered the seasonal frozen peach tea which was a partial slush drink with peach tea and tapioca boba. Drink the slush quickly if you're looking to cool off as it melts pretty fast to cool the tea. It was great tasting, refreshing, and not sweet. My kids ordered strawberry milk tea and regular milk tea, both with boba, regular ice and sweetness. We have Gong Cha back in California and there was a welcome consistency in what we expected and received. Overall the shop was busy with a short line. The store is very clean and service was quick. Despite being in a busy location, there weren't a lot of people when I came in. I got an oolong milk tea with bubbles and half sugar. They used nondairy creamer instead of milk for it which may be good for people with lactose intolerance but I prefer the taste of milk more. But it was located near 48th street so I had to walk about ten blocks to get there...but still worth the trek! This time, since I was hungry and feeling greedy I ordered creme brûlée brown sugar milk tea (brown sugar milk tea with cheese foam that's torched crisp on top) and little star peach crush (peach slushy with star-shaped coconut jelly topped by cheese foam). Brown sugar milk tea was awesome as usual and I downed it in five minutes. I took home the little star peach crush to enjoy later. The drink is pretty sweet even with 50% sugar level so I recommend going lower. The cheese foam doesn't blend in well with the slushy and it looks a little weird when mixed, but it was interesting that the drink tasted like yakult when I drank the peach juice and cheese foam together. read more

They have an interesting set of drinks, teas, coffee, and slushies and even coconut brown sugar here with several toppings. But what caught my attention was the Dirty Brown Sugar Foam Milk Tea. So I order it with pearls for $5 + $.50. It's dirty because they also sprinkle some brown sugar crystals on top of the foam. It comes with a re-closable cover like you get with takeout coffee only more heavy-duty plastic and not the thin heat seal film you find on other bubble teas. Well even with the brown sugar syrup you still have a good tea taste and can actually taste the different layers, The pearls were soft and not chewy. It was a cold night so after drinking half I just close the lid and took it home and not have to worry about spills. The shop is brite, clean, and good service behind the counter. After 2 visits to this new Gong Cha during the soft opening, I'm excited for how this Gong Cha location will turn out. I had a great experience with the Panda Milk Tea, which had black and white pearls cooked just right. The Lemon Ai-Yu with White Pearl I had (you can see this place is turning me onto these white pearls) was also quite good, though some of the lemon chunks I had were slightly unpleasant to bite into alongside the pearls. Adjusting sweetness and ice has been a breeze, and the normal suite of Gong Cha's menu and specials is offered here. I generally consider Gong Cha one of the better (though not quite the very best) boba chains around, and my initial impression is that this location maintains the standard I've come to expect from Gong Cha: higher quality than a place like ViVi, but not something that merits going far out of the way for. Located a block north of Times Square, this Gong Cha runs the risk of becoming a tourist hotspot, so I'm a bit worried about how this bodes for someone around the block like me. The volume has been pretty tame in the soft opening days I've seen so far, so I'm not completely sure quality control will be maintained if things pick up. The service here has also been very friendly and prompt, and that's something I hope they can maintain if things get busier. I'm writing this review quite early, but I'll likely update if things change for better or worse or if I feel like I have additional insight to give after this place settles into a regular rhythm. read more
