    Pastellitos

I have been coming to this bakery for a while now but never thought of making a review until Today. The bakery is located in Jamaica Plain on Centre Street, corner of gay head. The bakery is relatively small but has an open feel. When you walk in your greeted by the staff, can I help etc. The lady at &the counter was polite but a little ticked off due to not being able to move around like she wanted. I order the pastellitos or empanadas and a Arepa, all were good and tasted authentic to the Dominican cuisine. If you want something sweet or are looking for Dominican pastries, eat here.

Craving a good, no wait, a great empanada? Yes! And you don't want to travel too far out? Yes! Well, don't worry, Gondres bakery's got you! Oh. My. God. Those chicken empanadas are THE best I've ever had. The outside covering is crisp, not oily, and lightly seasoned. When you reach the centre, the chicken is shredded (yay, I've tried empanadas at a LOT of places, some add diced pieces of chicken and that just doesn't cut it), full of flavorful spices! Add to it a dash of Jamaican hot sauce which they have on their counter. It may singe your mouth but it'll take you to a different level of deliciousness. Every bite just melts in your mouth. We started with one empanada each, and now we buy over half a dozen every time we head out to Gondres! And did I mention, they're a dollar each?! Apart from the empanadas, we've tried the sweet arepa, and guava and cheese pastelito. All good! These make up our standing order. How I wish they delivered. But for now, I'm going to dream about the days when I eat them empanadas, haha.

    Bruins cake I ordered.

I ordered a bruins cake for my son's birthday. The cake was cute and delicious. I ordered a 2lb. cake with pineapple filling, which generously served about 25 people. I took off one star because the yellow frosting wasn't as golden as it should have been and the bruins logo had yellow frosting around the border, which I didn't ask for. Otherwise, the cake was moist, delicious and well made.

Custom designed and couldn't be happier. It's gorgeous!

Oh my goodness what can I say about this Bakery! Words cannot even describe how incredible and talented these individuals are. Here they have, in my opinion, Fairy God Mother's! (Hadas madrinas) They make anything you want. You tell then the idea of the size, color, style even design....they will make it happen. Miracle workers here! This was my daughter's 13th birthday cake and look how incredible this masterpiece came out. From the moment I picked it up, I was blown away. The details and just utter gorgeousness of this cake, I didn't even want to cut it or eat it by the end of the evening. I placed in my order a few days ahead of schedule (4 days in advance) and so when the day came it was ready for pick up. As you can see, the color matched my decorations at home as it brought everything together. The stars of the evening was my daughter and the cake. On the inside, oh my goodness, sooooo delicious and so moist. NOT DRY AT ALL!!! I'm telling you it was that good. This was a vanilla cake with strawberry filling....so so good. They have other kinds of fillings and so you're not limited to just strawberry but for me I know my daughter loved it. A BIG THANK YOU to Gondres Bakery! You made my princess so happy and even myself. All of my guests were blown away and so Without you all this couldn't happen the way I wanted to. This was, Perfecto en todos los sentidos, ya que estoy impresionado pero muy feliz con el resultado final. Mil Gracias! Anyone looking for a place to come get an amazing, gorgeous, custom cake at a great price. Please come here!!! You will not be disappointed

I am disappointed to say the least, my husband and I went into this shop to order a beautiful rose gold cake with drip decor and flowers on the top of the cake. We specifically asked for them to add edible flowers and a beautiful drip. This was far from that. The cakes drip leaked to the bottom of the cake and it looks absolutely terrible. I asked for flowers to be placed on the top and instead I get a pile of whipped cream... I'm not sure whether they were rushing to close or rushing on the cake but it DEFINITELY was not worth $85! On their instagram page, it looked as if they made good looking cakes but it did not prevail. The cake looked so bad I was even embarrassed to bring it to the actual event... like I can't even put into words how disappointed I am with this cake...this cake was far from a good looking cake & I will NEVER be ordering from Gondres ever again. I am extremely disappointed as I have been a loyal customer for years. I hope the pastelitos I ordered as well aren't as terrible as this cake. We ordered this cake TUESDAY so there was PLENTY of time to make it and if not they could have told us that instead of delivering a horrible looking cake... beyond disappointed and now I am left with an absolutely ridiculous cake that was rushed and leaning off to one side. It was NOT leveled and had a mounted top and was ready to slide off onto one side any second. We had to go to target and buy icing to ADD the trim at the bottom as it looked so messy.

My family has been coming here for a couple years now. The best Dominican pineapple cake I've found since the place I used to go in Lynn closed due to COVID. So far, we have been very pleased with their decorations and overall service. Price is a bit high but for a special occasion I guess it's worth spending on a nicely decorated cake.

Ordered my son's 16th birthday cake. I went in the day before asking if they would be able to make a simple, small cake for the next day. The kid was very nice and said he would be able to do it. I wanted "Happy Birthday J Stay Fresh". I told him I will pick it up at 6pm the next day..giving them time to do other orders. Next day comes..I arrive at 6:10pm to pick up the cake. First and foremost their customer service sucks. You will stand there in front of the register and the employees will come from in and out the back and will look you dead in the eyes and won't even ask if you're all set or if they can help you. I stood there for about 5 minutes until finally someone acknowledged me. I told the woman I was here to pick up a cake. She brings out the cake..and the writing on the cake was absolutely terrible and crooked. "Stay Fresh" wasn't even written on there like I asked. I inquired with the woman why wasn't "stay fresh" written on there and she tried to tell me that it wasn't on the order and I had to point to her it was on the receipt. She catches an attitude because I had called her out on the error and she went and had someone write it on there quickly. I wasn't happy with the cake at all but I had to rush to make it on time for my son's bday dinner. Fast forward..I arrive to the dinner..we ate, sing happy birthday and then he cut the cake. When my son cut into the cake you could tell the cake was DRY AS HELL. There was NO MOISTURE to the cake whatsoever!! I will never ever order a cake from them ever again.

Five stars for sure. Timely, beautiful work, and helpful staff. Highly recommend for your event needs.

I realllllly hate to do this because the pastries here are so good and the owner is really friendly. I ordered a small chocolate cake on a whim over the phone. I asked for the smallest chocolate cake with blue lettering. I go to pick up the cake and the lady working there asked me if I ordered a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting. I told her I did not but at this point it was too late so I just took it. I feel like she knew that they messed up since my receipt said chocolate on it. My receipt also had my telephone number on it so why not call me to tell me that you couldn't make a chocolate cake, which is what I paid for?? I came home and noticed that the cake had the meringue frosting on it, which I was surprised by given that the slices of cake that I normally buy from there have a different frosting on it that's more consistent with American cakes (I'm Dominican FYI so no hate). Nobody asked me what kind of frosting I wanted and I just assumed that I'd get what they normally have in their cake case. When the cake was finally cut, I obviously was upset that it was not chocolate and had minimal chocolate frosting inside. It instead had layers of vanilla and was soooo dry. The lady working there did not even apologize for messing up the order and just said that the girl who took my order was told that there wasn't any chocolate cake. Okay? Honestly, the pastries here are great. If you order a cake, it would probably be best for you to do it in person and hope that they don't mess up your order. So disappointed.

We walked into a space that is more takeout oriented in scale, but warm and comfortable enough to sit and eat without feeling out of place. The menu runs over twenty varieties of empanada on a given day, and the range is wide enough that building a mixed order across a few different fillings was the natural and obvious way to go. The classic beef is a reliable anchor and the short rib version elevates that same foundation with a richer, more layered filling. We tried the chicken mushroom, one of the more distinctive options on the menu, and it was worth ordering for something that departs from the expected. The spicy chorizo paired well with the chimichurri sauce, which is worth asking for if it does not come automatically. The La Che is another strong option if you want to try the house specialty alongside a more classic pick. One thing worth knowing is that some varieties sell out earlier in the day, so arriving with a bit of flexibility in your order in case a specific filling is gone is a smart approach. The staff were friendly and helped guide us through the menu when we hesitated. The empanadas themselves came out hot and crisp, with fillings that felt generous and well seasoned. For an empanada stop in Newton that delivers on variety and quality, Che Empanada is worth seeking out. We would come back for the short rib and the spicy chorizo, and we would plan to arrive earlier to catch the full selection.

They have a wide variety of empanadas (a lot more flavors than their website advertises) in addition to some retail items in the tiny store. The person who helped me with my order kindly labeled everything in the box. Only when I got home did I realize that I forgot to ask for chimichurri! The empanadas reheated well. They had a very delicate pastry shell that would sometimes crumble from the weight of the fillings. They tasted homey-- not too salty, greasy, or overly processed. While each empanada flavor tasted unique, I thought that they could definitely be enhanced by a tangy, salty, spicy sauce. I really should have picked up some chimichurri... They have a good selection of vegetarian empanadas and a vegan empanada as well. I look forward to coming back!

I spent my teens and early twenties in south Florida, and you know what people in their teens and twenties eat? That's right, empanadas lol. They're cheap, hot, quick and good. Cuban empanadas are amazing, with a strong yet flaky dough with bubbles (not like a pastelito), that holds together the juices of the filling. THESE empanadas are similar with a big difference. The dough is the same amazing result and the best I've had outside south Florida. The difference is the filling. Which is not wet from vegetables and seasoning. I wouldn't say it's unseasoned at all, the beef (res) empanada I had was really tasty, with filling more akin to a nice couple of tacos than some juicier empanadas. This has a great bonus of being REALLY EASY TO EAT ON THE GO. Also, not having a juicy filling means the item stays together better. They have salsas for the empanada so you can sauce it up as you like ;) it's a pink sauce that tastes a bit like vinegar. The huevos jamón y queso (ham egg and cheese) also went over well, very cheesy eggs! Also, the owner (she seemed like the owner operator, working the big shallow frying pot in the back) was very nice and is bilingual if your Spanish is not so great like mine . Good service
