We came out to celebrate birthdays. We moved through a few restaurants, and chose to come here instead of KBBQ. We arrived on a Friday at 7:15. It wasn't busy at all which was nice. The third star was earned entirely by the host working that night. He was the most helpful staff member of the restaurant for us. Our wait staff did not submit our order, and we received our items 30 minutes after other tables received their food. They also did not communicate at all with us, and instead the host returned to help with our service. He did great and sorted out the issues. It may be that the wait staff was new, but there just wasn't any communication to sort it. We had a group of nine, split across two tables. Our waiter didn't come over for quite some time, and was very quiet. We didn't get an explanation of how everything worked. Apparently, this used to be kitchen service only. Now, it's self serve from a stock room I the back for most of the skewers and food. There's a row of fridges with labels of the skewers and sliced meats. There is a very small selection of cooked foods available, sides and the such. None of it was fresh. The corn and shrimp was dry, and tasted old and left on a warming plate. There were not a lot of vegetable options. The skewer cooking was actually very interesting, and I enjoyed the process. It would be nice if the skewers had better slices of meat. A lot of it was very thin, and after cooking, provides even smaller portions. If you had wings or feet, they didn't rotate aa rheyd be stuck in the grill beneath, or on skewers next to it. Tough to spread out appropriately. I think our biggest concern was all of the meats, beef, lamb, pork all tasted the same with heavy cumin. There was no differentiating flavors between types of proteins. Spicy Korean pork belly tasted the same as the lamb, tasted the same as the beef. Having differentiation in flavors is crucial. By the end of our meal we needed to detox from the cumin overload. We also ordered some kitchen service items. The tacos were not good. Stuffed with mostly lettuce, there was one small skewers worth of cumin protein. The tortilla was a raw flour. It was very similar to grade school tacos. We also ordered the large lamb and beef skewers. Those came out far better than the smaller cooked versions. Decent cut portions, and cooked well. Still a full cumin flavor. I had to douse most of my food in the garlic sauce and spicy to cover the flavor. Overall, I liked the premise of skewer cooking. I would like to see them adjust the meat prep to have distinct flavors for their options. read more

The AYCE skewer concept at this place was really great. They have a room where you grab all the skewers buffet style with some sides and some other cooked items. There were some items where you had to order from the menu. The menu was just a bit confusing because most of the items on there were available to grab yourself and was not differentiated from items you have to order with the waiter. I love how the grill is setup. It automatically rotates the skewers so you don't have to. Underneath, you can grill meats yourself or you can choose to have half the grill rotating skewers and the other half self-grilling. This place honestly could have been a 5 star, but there were some things that could have been better. This place has a time limit like most AYCE places. We normally don't meet the limit at most places, but they took a while to replenish the buffet. There were times we were waiting for the items we wanted and we weren't able to order it off of the menu to be delivered to our table. Other than that, it would have been great. Close to 5 star, but a few things could help. New ayce skewer place in Chinatown. Its very modern and done fairly well inside, better than the typical hole in the wall / been here 30 year restaurant vibe. Decent size restaurant as well, probably around 20 to 30 tables. Service was quick and efficient, especially as almost everything was self serve. Service staff definitely kept an eye on you and checked on you often, and helped you with any menu ordered items or drinks quickly. The tables themselves are interesting with a giant skewer grill in the middle and hood. Not the most conducive to talk to anyone across from you (cant even see them half the time), but the skewer grill worked well, cooked quickly, and even had a little light so you can see if your meat is done. If you never cooked your own skewer you're going to play a guessing game if the meat is done, but first time for everything. Self service area has a wide variety of prepared dishes and skewers. The asian cold dishes, especially the pickled cucumbers were great to help cute the oil and grease. The skewers were in the fridge with a lot of different selection, maybe around 30. The fatty beef and lamb were good (especially the big menu ordered ones), and even the chicken cartilage and hearts. Only minor complaint is the skewers could use a bit more flavor - they did have cumin and red pepper on the table you can sprinkle on as well but felt it was missing some salt. Drink prices were reasonable. Regardless, this was a great experience and I'll be back. Just be careful not to overeat. read more

I am a big fan of chinese skewers so I visited Golden Time BBQ. The value and quality is there but the flavor and grill could be better. The eggplant was not very garlicky or tasty. Additionally there is some opportunity for their buffet side dishes and cold dish areas. Our grill gave us some challenges, there were sections on it that just did not cook the food, we had to move and it was not much better at the second table. The booths seating makes it hard if you have a bigger group because you can only get in and out from one side (challenging considering it is a buffet where you get your own skewers). I would recommend the made to order skewers, the lamb was the best there. The chicken knee and beef skewers from the fridge were good too. Watch out for the marshmallows because they are massive haha The restaurant is designed like a bar, cool lights and firey displays. The only all you can eat Chinese skewer BBQ that I know of in Houston. You can order some food from the kitchen but most of the AYCE skewer are in the refrigerator in a separate section they also have other food in that section and the skewer are label on the door so check careful and if you are hungry, order some food from the kitchen first so as you need to watch for your skewer to cook. The meat taste very good and well seasoned. After you are done the skewers can be place in the canister on the table. read more

I was in a party of 8 people for a birthday dinner and we were split into two tables. Our waitress doesn't speak English very well but she was nice. It was our first time here and she explained to us how this works. There is a smaller menu that we must order though her, otherwise most of the side dishes were self served in another room. She also let me know the owner said that their lamb is from New Zealand. This place was all you can eat, and there was plenty of options. Unfortunately, they don't restock as quick as I would like them to and the self-serving room. In the self saving room there were hot side dishes, and cold side dishes. All the skewers were in the refrigerator and these are all raw. You put the skewers on the middle of the table where there is a grill. Let them rotate until they're ready to eat. There's also a wire net underneath if you want to put anything on the grill directly or if your skewer item falls down instead. This was a nice experience but I would really like them to restock their skewers in the self serving room better. The one I really wanted to try wasn't restocked while we were there. Things I'll try again are the honey beef , seafood item, lambs (any cut), fried shrimp(warm side dish), giant lamb (order via waitress), corn cheese. Went on New Year's for dinner. This restaurant is busy busy busy. It took about an hour wait for a party of 5. Service is a little slow because they are pretty understaffed but once things got moving, it was great. It's a busy place and right now, everything has Nezha decorations. You can order a pretty wide variety of meat items, ranging from skewers or grilled pieces. The skewers are a fun, new way to do BBQ but it also offers some more traditional routes. You can get lamb, beef, pork, chicken, bread (!), veggies, etc. They had a mix of other side dishes as well that were good, such as the pickled radish, grilled garlic eggplant, and corn cheese. It's a bit hard to determine how much food you should order and once it comes out, none of it is really labeled, so it's a bit of a guess for the meats that look similar to each other. Rotating skewers also cook much slower than just straight up grilling it, so I feel like you don't eat as much because it's just a slower process. But that's okay, you still leave feeling pretty stuffed, but not disgustingly so. The meat was good though! Chinese sauces included garlic sauce, cumin powder, and chili powder, which are not my favorite flavors, but was something unique and different compared to your usual KBBQ fare. We ended the night with roasted marshmallows, which were great and came in an original and strawberry flavor. Overall, for the price, it's a pretty fun and inexpensive experience! When you order, you tell them how many of each item you want, most cuts on each skewer are pretty small so keep that in mind when you're ordering. If you order any of top row on that meats section, you cook it on the grill, doesn't come in skewers. We missed quite a few dishes, just lost in the kitchen or whatever. Yay another Chinese skewer restaurant in Chinatown! We have so many Korean bbq restaurants in Houston already so I was happy to see that Golden Time BBQ was serving Chinese bbq. My boyfriend came here a few months ago during their soft opening when they were selling the skewers a la carte. We visited about a week ago and noticed that they've since transitioned to an AYCE format. It's now ~ $32 per person, which is on par with other ayce bbq spots in the area these days. As for the food everything was flavorful and tender. We especially liked their beef items! Service was alright. I would return but would try to come hungrier next time. You can order some items through your server, but service was EXTREMELY slow. And, with the time limit of 2 hours, it was not a good idea since we waited forever for our items. I waited the entire time for pork feet, and they never brought out more. They have a frigerated area full of meat/tendon/pork/seafood skewers, a hot area with chicken nuggets/fries, fried rice, stir fry noodles, and peppered items. None of the hot items were good. Tasted old and "stale?" There is a sauce/pickled veggies area and the pork feet tray (which was empty the entire time I was there). Tiny meat skewer portions (because it probably has to be able to rotate on the grill). You can order larger skewers, but like I said it takes FOREVER to come out. Their ramen is pretty much mama noodles + veggies. Cheese corn was good. The entire experience was dampened by the fact that it felt like a sauna in there. Eating and sweating the entire time---and I don't sweat that easily. A couple of us had to go outside in the Houston heat to "cool off." How ironic is that, right? It was right after midnight when I drove past Golden Times BBQ 那些年 last night. I was searching for late night snacks after seeing disappointment at Dun Huang Plaza. I was thinking about coming here. Now it's the time. Not sure if the restaurant has been officially opened or still during soft opening. There were so many things wrong at the restaurant. My plate was dirty with black dusts. I'm curious if anyone noticed besides me. I waited 20 minutes for the soup. Okay, the dough drop soup 麵疙瘩汤 is a little labor intensive to cook. But it's easier than Gnocchi. I consider it as a perfect midnight snack from northern China. I was trying to see if I could have a normal vegetarian meal with their existing menu. There's no website or online menu. Once I scanned the QR code, it goes directly to the order form for my table. After a friendly round of mini-golf, my friends and I drove over to Chinatown to celebrate Christmas Eve. We thought we'd stop by this new AYCE BBQ skewer place to get an early table and were luckily seated immediately. The concept is quite cool - the grill has a gear chain that each skewer can slot into, which automatically rotates them slowly over a toasty ether. A thin grillplate can be slotted right below skewer level to simultaneously cook sliced meats (be sure to ask for this if you end up ordering those dishes!) It wasn't clear who our server was so we didn't know who to flag down at first, but eventually got the attention of who appeared to be managing the general chaos on the dining room floor. With a little patience, our first order came out and we started our grill adventure! It was a fun logic puzzle to try to put in as many skewers as possible without having them collide with each other (the chicken feet, chicken wings, and vegetables were notable offenders in this regard). With a bit of patience, our efforts were eventually rewarded - these meat morsels were fatty and juicy, with incredible flavor from the spiced cumin powder and chili garlic sauce provided on the table. Our favorites were the ribeye, pork belly, and black pepper beef, which cooked relatively fast and didn't require too much TLC on the grill. It soon became clear to us that the back of the house was more than a bit slammed, and we started to feel the "hanger" as our second order was delayed 30+ minutes. We ended up ordering some prepared foods to sate our grumbling bellies, and actually ended up enjoying the tomato-egg drop soup (疙瘩汤), the spicy tofu with enoki, and the garlic eggplant quite a bit. When our subsequent skewer order finally arrived, it was missing a few things that we later found out that the kitchen had run out of. We adapted further orders by sticking to what we had successfully received as well as the less popular menu options (think gizzard, tripe, and tendon), and we ended up hitting a good pace of ordering and cooking by the end of our 2-hour dining experience. As we were about to pay and leave, we started receiving a few dishes that were supposedly ordered in earlier rounds and had no choice but to send them back to the kitchen - surely, we couldn't be responsible for plates that we had given up hope on an hour prior? We finished with pineapple and marshmallow skewers - a sweet end to what was otherwise a confusing and chaotic experience. While the staff were friendly in all their interactions with us, I think their efforts were ultimately hampered by a communication breakdown between servers and the kitchen - there was no way to know if the kitchen had run out of a particular item unless the server knew, and there was no confirmation system to track whether an order was being prepared or delivered. Perhaps these logistics will improve with time or more experienced staffing, but it'll be a while before I consider going again - the gamble with every order makes Golden Time a hard sell in comparison with all the other AYCEs in Chinatown and around Houston. read more

It was 2 hours well spent here. My party of 7 spared no time getting right to the nitty gritty of the meat (literally). Lamb, beef, pork, veggies, even the bread were all chef's kiss. Trust me, don't skip out on the bread. The crispy, buttery, flakiness of it is such a treat in between the meat heavy bites. I loved the interactive aspect of this dining experience, being able to watch the skewers cook right in front of you, which doesn't take much time at all. The servers were all attentive: made sure our waters were filled, promptly cleared up all the used skewers, and checked on us multiple time. I also appreciated the little cart that was under the table; it held everything we ordered and allowed us to keep the table tidy. It does get busy during dinner time. We waited about 45 mins to be seated, but it was well worth it. There is happy hour past 9pm: buy 1 drink, get 1 free. They also give you a melona at the end to round out your meal.
