I am a big fan of chinese skewers so I visited Golden Time BBQ. The value and quality is there but the flavor and grill could be better. The eggplant was not very garlicky or tasty. Additionally there is some opportunity for their buffet side dishes and cold dish areas. Our grill gave us some challenges, there were sections on it that just did not cook the food, we had to move and it was not much better at the second table. The booths seating makes it hard if you have a bigger group because you can only get in and out from one side (challenging considering it is a buffet where you get your own skewers). I would recommend the made to order skewers, the lamb was the best there. The chicken knee and beef skewers from the fridge were good too. Watch out for the marshmallows because they are massive haha The restaurant is designed like a bar, cool lights and firey displays. From the moment we stepped in, the inside of the restaurant gave off a clean and very chill vibe. Tables were filled on a Sunday and everyone seemed like they were having a great time. When we sat down our waitress was super attentive and gave her suggestions that fitted our taste and then guided us to newer options. The food was amazing! TikTok brought me here. $29.99 for AYCE skewers?! Why not, right? They even open until late night. Huge menu. You can order some items through your server, but service was EXTREMELY slow. And, with the time limit of 2 hours, it was not a good idea since we waited forever for our items. I waited the entire time for pork feet, and they never brought out more. They have a frigerated area full of meat/tendon/pork/seafood skewers, a hot area with chicken nuggets/fries, fried rice, stir fry noodles, and peppered items. None of the hot items were good. Tasted old and "stale?" There is a sauce/pickled veggies area and the pork feet tray (which was empty the entire time I was there). Tiny meat skewer portions (because it probably has to be able to rotate on the grill). You can order larger skewers, but like I said it takes FOREVER to come out. The entire experience was dampened by the fact that it felt like a sauna in there. Eating and sweating the entire time---and I don't sweat that easily. Price was good for what you get, concept was cool, but we probably will have to wait until they can figure out how to make our dining experience better (quicker food turnaround and better ventilation). read more

Came here with a group of 4 and got seated right away. I like the many options they have in their menu. Most of it, you'll have to grab in the side room which contains all the skewers and sides/apps. I mainly enjoyed the skewers while everything else (sides & apps) were only decent and mid quality. For AYCE it's about $30 but I've travelled to Cali and NYC recently where I paid less and with the same dining experience. Went on New Year's for dinner. This restaurant is busy busy busy. It took about an hour wait for a party of 5. Service is a little slow because they are pretty understaffed but once things got moving, it was great. It's a busy place and right now, everything has Nezha decorations. You can order a pretty wide variety of meat items, ranging from skewers or grilled pieces. The skewers are a fun, new way to do BBQ but it also offers some more traditional routes. You can get lamb, beef, pork, chicken, bread (!), veggies, etc. They had a mix of other side dishes as well that were good, such as the pickled radish, grilled garlic eggplant, and corn cheese. It's a bit hard to determine how much food you should order and once it comes out, none of it is really labeled, so it's a bit of a guess for the meats that look similar to each other. Rotating skewers also cook much slower than just straight up grilling it, so I feel like you don't eat as much because it's just a slower process. But that's okay, you still leave feeling pretty stuffed, but not disgustingly so. The meat was good though! Chinese sauces included garlic sauce, cumin powder, and chili powder, which are not my favorite flavors, but was something unique and different compared to your usual KBBQ fare. We ended the night with roasted marshmallows, which were great and came in an original and strawberry flavor. Overall, for the price, it's a pretty fun and inexpensive experience! I was really disappointed with my experience here, especially for the price. The restaurant is beautiful and Instagram-worthy, but that's where the positives ended. It was unbearably hot inside--honestly hotter than a Houston summer--with poor ventilation and a musty smell. The all-you-can-eat setup was inconvenient since we had to keep getting up to grab our own skewers, and many trays were nearly empty. The skewers themselves had tiny portions, and the few items ordered through our server took 30-40 minutes to arrive. The food was bland, with most dishes tasting heavily of salt and cumin. Our server was also inattentive, and we constantly had to flag her down for help. My biggest concern was safety. We had seven people squeezed into one booth with very little table space, handling short metal skewers over open flames without tongs until we asked for them. Our grill caught fire twice, the grills cooked painfully slowly, and one person in our party was burned when a bowl of extremely hot liquid was placed on our crowded table without any warning. Between the heat, flames, cramped seating, and constant passing of hot food, the entire experience felt chaotic and unsafe. I would not recommend this restaurant for families with children. I've been to many Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese BBQ restaurants, and I've never had an experience this uncomfortable. Overall, it felt like this restaurant prioritizes aesthetics over the dining experience. Between the heat, slow service, limited food availability, tiny portions, bland food, overcrowding, and multiple safety concerns, it wasn't worth the price. Well, that was...okay! Pretty full restaurant for an early Sunday dinner around 5:30~ Fun concept but it's so slow.. not the fault of the servers..I don't think? I feel like they'd do better if they had tablets installed at each table so you could order as you go. Once you get your first round of things to cook, it does move a bit quicker. We tried to order a bunch each time we ordered because there's not a rhyme or reason on how things came out The concept is unique here, but also wasn't explained really as I told him it was our first time. Some things come cooked, some things are raw, no differentiating on the menu lol. When you order, you tell them how many of each item you want, most cuts on each skewer are pretty small so keep that in mind when you're ordering. If you order any of top row on that meats section, you cook it on the grill, doesn't come in skewers. We missed quite a few dishes, just lost in the kitchen or whatever. I'm sure they're having to manage a lot. The garlic sauce on the table was yummy, you put all your used skewers into a bucket, the atmosphere is fun. Yay another Chinese skewer restaurant in Chinatown! We have so many Korean bbq restaurants in Houston already so I was happy to see that Golden Time BBQ was serving Chinese bbq. My boyfriend came here a few months ago during their soft opening when they were selling the skewers a la carte. We visited about a week ago and noticed that they've since transitioned to an AYCE format. It's now ~ $32 per person, which is on par with other ayce bbq spots in the area these days. As for the food everything was flavorful and tender. We especially liked their beef items! Service was alright. I would return but would try to come hungrier next time. We both felt like we did not get our money's worth. Each of us ate about 10 skewers each (they used to be under $2 per skewer when it was still a la carte). read more

My friends and I tried this place while in HTX for the weekend. We wanted to switch it up from other skewer places we've been and settled on Golden Time BBQ. The ambiance of this place is dark and relaxing in a way, despite it being pretty busy. We began ordering and tried an array of things. All the food was great. The seasonings and cuts of meat were perfect. There's also additional seasonings on the table for you to use. What really stood out to me was the eel. Without a doubt, 10/10. It had such a delicate texture and flavor and was surprisingly very moist. When eaten with the rice, I felt like I was having a meal from Japan. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to someone who enjoys skewers. The only down side might be that you have to actually wait for your food to cook, but it's part of the experience. It was right after midnight when I drove past Golden Times BBQ 那些年 last night. I was searching for late night snacks after seeing disappointment at Dun Huang Plaza. I saw the parking lot was half filled in front of the restaurant. I thought what the hell. Let me give it a try. I remember seeing the sign few months ago as this restaurant was about to open. I was thinking about coming here. Now it's the time. Not sure if the restaurant has been officially opened or still during soft opening. There were so many things wrong at the restaurant. My plate was dirty with black dusts. I'm curious if anyone noticed besides me. I waited 20 minutes for the soup. Okay, the dough drop soup 麵疙瘩汤 is a little labor intensive to cook. But it's easier than Gnocchi. I consider it as a perfect midnight snack from northern China. I was trying to see if I could have a normal vegetarian meal with their existing menu. There's no website or online menu. Once I scanned the QR code, it goes directly to the order form for my table. After a friendly round of mini-golf, my friends and I drove over to Chinatown to celebrate Christmas Eve. We thought we'd stop by this new AYCE BBQ skewer place to get an early table and were luckily seated immediately. The concept is quite cool - the grill has a gear chain that each skewer can slot into, which automatically rotates them slowly over a toasty ether. A thin grillplate can be slotted right below skewer level to simultaneously cook sliced meats (be sure to ask for this if you end up ordering those dishes!) It wasn't clear who our server was so we didn't know who to flag down at first, but eventually got the attention of who appeared to be managing the general chaos on the dining room floor. With a little patience, our first order came out and we started our grill adventure! It was a fun logic puzzle to try to put in as many skewers as possible without having them collide with each other (the chicken feet, chicken wings, and vegetables were notable offenders in this regard). With a bit of patience, our efforts were eventually rewarded - these meat morsels were fatty and juicy, with incredible flavor from the spiced cumin powder and chili garlic sauce provided on the table. Our favorites were the ribeye, pork belly, and black pepper beef, which cooked relatively fast and didn't require too much TLC on the grill. It soon became clear to us that the back of the house was more than a bit slammed, and we started to feel the "hanger" as our second order was delayed 30+ minutes. We ended up ordering some prepared foods to sate our grumbling bellies, and actually ended up enjoying the tomato-egg drop soup (疙瘩汤), the spicy tofu with enoki, and the garlic eggplant quite a bit. When our subsequent skewer order finally arrived, it was missing a few things that we later found out that the kitchen had run out of. We adapted further orders by sticking to what we had successfully received as well as the less popular menu options (think gizzard, tripe, and tendon), and we ended up hitting a good pace of ordering and cooking by the end of our 2-hour dining experience. As we were about to pay and leave, we started receiving a few dishes that were supposedly ordered in earlier rounds and had no choice but to send them back to the kitchen - surely, we couldn't be responsible for plates that we had given up hope on an hour prior? We finished with pineapple and marshmallow skewers - a sweet end to what was otherwise a confusing and chaotic experience. While the staff were friendly in all their interactions with us, I think their efforts were ultimately hampered by a communication breakdown between servers and the kitchen - there was no way to know if the kitchen had run out of a particular item unless the server knew, and there was no confirmation system to track whether an order was being prepared or delivered. Perhaps these logistics will improve with time or more experienced staffing, but it'll be a while before I consider going again - the gamble with every order makes Golden Time a hard sell in comparison with all the other AYCEs in Chinatown and around Houston. read more

It was 2 hours well spent here. My party of 7 spared no time getting right to the nitty gritty of the meat (literally). Lamb, beef, pork, veggies, even the bread were all chef's kiss. Trust me, don't skip out on the bread. The crispy, buttery, flakiness of it is such a treat in between the meat heavy bites. I loved the interactive aspect of this dining experience, being able to watch the skewers cook right in front of you, which doesn't take much time at all. The meats are low quality and chewy no matter how you cook them. They're cut and skewered messy and are clearly cheap cuts. They come out tasteless or overly salty with too much cumin. Speaking of cumin, they only seem to have one kind of seasoning which is the cumin. Maybe offer more sauces or have salt and pepper at the table. Use thicker, higher quality cuts of meat. This is the 3rd time we came here in the past 1 month, but there will be no more. 1st time we came here, my wife really liked it. ( I personally think the food was ok, but my wife doesn't have so many restaurants liked this much so I always let her pick restaurants to eat) Even though we live in college station, we still come here for dinner every time we come around. 2nd time was Black Friday, restaurant opens at 5, we got here around 4:45. Well, we were the first group got here, and got seated as first group too. The bad part was, we were not seated until 5:20. Somehow they had late open that day or many days. We don't know. Later on we realized, people waiting outside not because they did not have table or waitress, they need to show the waiting line as images how hot the restaurant is... This is the 3rd time we come here. We got here at 5:13pm after 1.5 hours drive from home. It is 6:53pm at this very moment. We have not received the big lamb we ordered when we just arrived. I asked the table behind me, they'd been waiting for the big lamb order over 1.5 hours also. It is marked as " top selling". Reason I order it is because there is nothing else I would like from this restaurant. I asked a few different waiter and waitress on our order, the old Chinese lady had the worst reaction, as pretended not hearing anything and walked away. Worst experience ever. Delicious skewers! Love that we have this in town now after seeing it in S. Korea, and China. Keeps the food fresh and hot without having to worry about the meats getting cold. Ordering is very easy through barcode scan that pulls up the menu as well as checking out without having to wait on them to bring you the bill. They also provide perfectly mixed seasonings for customers to choose from at the table. Our favourites are the lamb skewers, pepper beef, Korean pork belly, and boneless beef short rib. The only concern is that the grill can feel really hot on the face even though they have the pull down vents...just did not feel strong enough. We brought electric hand fans to keep us cool.
