This diner has been around for quite a while. The building has been remodeled but the main frame with the big windows, the breakfast bar and the booths are still there. The smell of fresh coffee is everywhere and a positive vibe is present. We sat down quickly in the farthest booth, our preference. I had a nice view of the patrons, the street, and the kitchen. I noticed the amount of dessert on the counter, and later learned they were made in house, and if I am not wrong, this place is known for their desserts. We ordered a pretty standard diner breakfast and everything was perfect. As usual, and not to say that I am complicated, I had my order customized, and the server graciously accommodated me. After all, great service means a bigger tip. We were very satisfied. I got to visit a true diner, have a good meal, get a feel of the community, and the chance to help that community with my business. After all, diners, just like breweries, are traditionally American institutions for community exchange, much like the town's inn or the pub, if we were in the British lands. read more

Golden Gate Diner is located on Union Blvd. in Allentown. They are open every day from 6AM - 9PM. I drive by this diner all the time and I haven't been in since I was a kid, so I had to stop in for a nostalgic visit. I ordered French onion soup and the Golden Gate special (1/4 lb burger and fries). The soup was savory and the burger was juicy. The fries were a bit undercooked, but $6.50 for a burger and fries is a great deal. Pickup and delivery are both available. Good old fashioned diner food and ambiance.! We have eaten here many times and tried several different dishes. The breakfasts are my favorite so far. The food is what I expect from a diner, so many diners today are not keeping with diner tradition/expectations. Golden Gate does. From the food to the ambiance to the service. The owner is a great guy. Very friendly, always willing to jump in if the staff needs help. He checks on his customers himself to ensure their dining experience is good. 5 old high school friends met up for lunch the other day. The service was pleasant and attentive and well paced. Typical good diner food with lots of options. On second visit, blueberry pancakes were not hot, pretty good tastewise. Decaf was okay. Third visit, cabbage soup was okay. Couldn't taste raspberry vinaigrette in side salad. Love diners, and had a very good experience with this one. It was late when we rolled in after drinks, and all the other kitchens were closing down for the night. Luckily, this place was close by, open and not super crowded. Clean, bright, + nostalgic music from the 80's and 90's. It was a welcome step back in time. I'm old fashioned and really enjoyed the beef liver & onions entree. Our waitress was really attentive and sweet. If I'm ever in town visiting again, I'd be happy to come back. read more

2 Stars for food, 5 stars for the people so Im at 3.5 but since I go to a diner more for the food... I have to round down. I've had their breakfast which is more of a 3 but their dinner offerings were frankly, poor. I would suggest that maybe the cook was just tired but truthfully the ingredients weren't fresh, the food was either over seasoned or bland, and the textures showed little thought to cook time. I couldn't even eat my lasagna. You might be asking "why would you get lasagna at a Diner man?!" Yeah, you're right. Truthfully, the kids didn't like any of their food either (admittedly, their mom is a great cook) but they did enjoy the treat at the end. I hate to talk poorly of a great icon on the East Side. Come for the people and the great atmosphere, but for me, I wouldn't stay for the food. read more

Stopped for breakfast. Had t6he cheese steak omelet, came with the marinara sauce. Home fries and toast. Had to settle for white toast, no rye. Also had to ask for jelly for my toast, grape & strawberry. Excellent omelet, might have had a little more meat. It was good, & the meal included the coffee & they made fresh decaf for me. Bright newly remodeled, first time I have been here since they reopened. Prices are great! I shall be back soon. Good service, mice place! read more

This is a great diner, especially for their prices. The diner is clean, efficient staff, and a great manager/owner. With our big group, we had chicken parm, chicken marsala, grilled sticky bun, fried cod, club sandwich, and more. The quality of food is good, and the desserts are yummy! The manager/owner took the time to take out 15+ pies and cakes for me to see and he gave me the name and details about each one. Our table had coconut cream pie, rice pudding, and a chocolate cake. As we left, the manager/owner offered tastes of other desserts to my mom, for the future. The experience was very pleasant. read more

The salmon today which was on the deals of the day was not good. Too fishy and can't be eaten. Food that we order was all short cut. Canned mashed potatoes, candy carrot was can (can taste the tin). The good thing was the soup but the cracker was not crunchy. Wouldn't recommend this place anymore. Bethlehem t good for the money. The waitress though was nice. Wouldn't go back. read more

First, I set my restaurant setting to "diner". It's a critical distinction, as I am not looking for fancily-prepared victuals. What I do expect, however, is snappy service, friendly wait staff, and quick service. This restaurant delivers, at a ridiculously low price besides. The food was delicious and was not smothered in oils or greases... instead, my breakfast-for-lunch was served warm, tasty, and with a pleasant smile. I also have to say that this diner, like many others, has a huge number of regular patrons who receive a great deal of attention to ensure their needs are addressed. In a way, this restaurant reminds me of some of the local bars in Spain with regular patrons and a sense of community. I highly recommend trying this spot out! read more

My son recommends that children try the Batman (grilled cheese sandwich, french fries, drink, and ice cream are included). I had the Parmesan chicken and spaghetti entrée which included soup, salad, and a dinner roll. Flavors were traditional and comforting. Our bill was $13 which was more than reasonable for the amount of food we received. We will be back! read more

Just had my first experience at Golden Gate Diner while taking a day trip to Allentown. The inside is very dated looking, but I kinda like that. What I wasn't that wild about was their omelette. They used canned mushrooms. What??? C'mon, canned mushrooms in an omelette? Canned mushrooms in general don't taste good, but in omelette?? Not a fan. The homefries were very tasteless. Cheese had a very processed taste as well. I know this spot is pretty inexpensive, but I've been to countless other diners that still execute so much better. It was mostly older folks in there. Perhaps they dig the cheap eats and don't mind below average diner fare. Service was ok, but not very attentive. If back in area unlikely to return. read more

This is the first time we go to this diner. We looked over the reviews and decided to head over. I grabbed the Meatloaf, smashed potatoes and it came with a side Ceasar salad, and a broccoli soup (I don't like soup but this one was amazing!!). My wife got a turkey, Swiss cheese on a croissant. My two kids got the hot dog with fries which came with a drink and a scoop of ice cream. For desert we got tapioca pudding and the ice cream sundae. All in all the food was delicious and extremely affordable. If I'm in town, I will definitely be swinging by this diner again. The waitress was great and there was not a moment that our drinks were low. The constantly keep tabs to make sure drinks are full and that all is ok which is outstanding. GREAT service!! The short version is many years ago this place is great. There was a fall out between some brothers…read morethat happened or something like that, it was a family business, and one of the brothers took over. At first it was a little rough and then it became outstanding for a while. And then it started to slip again. Haven't been back since it started to slip. Freshness and good ingredients are very important. It seemed like the ingredients were slipping the last time we were there. We have not been back. There's a lot of good restaurants in this area that don't slip. So we stick with our favorites for now but, we do like to try new things. Most of the time the service is spot on and really nice. Such a shame to have all those good things in place and not pay attention to the most important detail. Food quality is where it starts. If you don't do this correctly and use subpar raw ingredients down to every detail, you're wasting all the hard earned resources that you have to work with. It's a desperate move, not a move that is going to lead to a long term successful business of any kind. The key is sticking to quality and find a way to keep going with those good ingredients. Lower prices can jumpstart the business again. And, if you're fortunate enough to get your customers back and your business grows again, lower your prices just a little to show your appreciation for your customers. Sincere good will is what you want and what you need to spread. Don't allow greed to return even in difficult times if they should return. And in regards to ambiance, we found it to be nice but, on occasion the shades weren't blocking the sun well enough. Small, yet important detail. Clean restrooms are also very important. I understand that you can't be everywhere at once but, like a security guard, you can do a run from station to station or restroom or freezer to check that everything is all good. I used to work in a kitchen for a few years. I loved the first one but, the second one had some people that I couldn't work around. Two entirely different experiences. The second one drove me back to pursuing my music career again and I am still at it. I will be playing at The Water Lantern Festival on July 18th at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown. My set is at 8 pm. And try not to look sad. I understand it's not going to be easy. Good things don't come easy is a saying that I heard a long time ago and I understand it from experience. And I can testify that it worked for me.

I got the curry and subbed tofu for shrimp. It was a little bland and I honestly wish there would've been a bit more of the curry itself (there was so much rice) and some more salt/seasoning, but it was fine. I'd give it a 7.5/10. My coworkers all enjoyed their own dishes (especially the rigatoni) and they kept raving about them throughout the whole meal. The bourbon cocktail was an odd mix of bourbon, apple cider, and other elements--an awkward, Frankenstein-style whiskey sour that simply didn't work. Worst of all, both drinks were served in thin plastic cups, which immediately cheapened the entire experience. I ordered the falafel sandwich and specifically requested a toasted bun. It arrived not just room temperature, but cold. I sent it back, and it returned burning hot... the bottom soggy... literally too hot to pick up... with no browning or color change, clearly microwaved. Microwaving is not toasting. At that point, the sandwich was inedible. I removed the bun entirely and ate just the falafel, which was dry and largely tasteless. At this point I knew coming back to this restaurant was a mistake. Food timing was another issue. The dishes took roughly 45 minutes to arrive after the drinks, possibly longer. We were all getting annoyed and what started out well when we first walked in turned negative. I wasn't impressed on my first visit years ago... and this second visit confirmed it. Between the poor drinks, cheap plastic cups, ridiculously long wait (with no explanation nor apology), and careless food execution, there's no reason to return.

They feel cheap and tacky, and hot food should not be served onto cold plastic plates. Real plates would immediately improve the presentation and overall dining experience. We're out of town from CA. I Yelped breakfast places this morning, this place appeared so we went for it. Friendly locals poke their heads to see who's entering, waitress was very nice, damn everyone was nice. Very family orientated. Dining room and bathrooms clean, nice nice place. From the architecture I felt I was in the Cars movie. We ordered the steak and eggs, and the two egg, sausage pancake combo. The steak was ok, it was the $5.95 sirloin, but better than a lot of other diners "Hi Denny's." They also had I think NY and another better cut for more money. but honestly not bad. Excellent potatoes. Fantastic pancakes and coffee, sausage was called pork roll, very good. I highly recommend the pancakes and pork roll. COFFEE IS SUPERB. Total was $12.00. We were staying at the Rennaisance downtown, it was raining, we were tired didn't want to deal with walking around getting wet, so we figured we go back this place for dinner. Same experience. Great staff, friendly regulars. This time we unknowingly sat next to a regular couple speaking with some guy I thought was another regular. The special was stuffed cabbage, no idea what it was. He over heard me ask the waitress and popped up with a full explanation followed my the regulars explaining they just had it, it's great so we ordered that and sirloin steak dinner. Damn, the stuff cabbage was excellent. oh and all the dinners come with soup AND salad, and a vegetable and dinner rolls. For under $10. I'm pretty sure it's all homemade too. The soup definitely (I know my navy bean) and the stuffed cabbage had to be. Anyway I highly recommend this place. We're going back for breakfast in the morning. Give it a shot, highly recommended.
