Wert's Cafe is a family owned and operated restaurant that is known for their signature burgers. They are located on N 18th St. in Allentown, and open Mon - Fri 11AM - 8PM. I haven't been here in close to a decade, so I was way overdo for a Wert's cheeseburger. The burger is stuffed with mushrooms and onions, and then topped with Velveeta cheese. It's absolutely amazing! There was so much flavor to the burger, I didn't need to add any sauce. My buddy ordered Nikki's bacon bleu cheeseburger. The broiled burger is topped with bacon, bleu cheese dressing, lettuce, and tomato. He said it was one of the best burgers he ever had. We also ordered a crock of French onion soup and split the famous fries. The fries are topped with Cajun seasoning, crab meat, and homemade cheese sauce. Good, but nothing to write home about. Service was stupendous! We were greeted with a warm welcome as soon as we walked through the door, our server was attentive, and the entire staff made us feel like family. Our service was friendly and accurate, but the food wasn't anything I'd choose to return for. The menu has some unique offerings--if you like cheese sauce, it might tempt you. The burgers we ordered were fair, but overpriced when served only with a bag of chips. The funnel cake fries sounded interesting, but turned out to be a disappointment. Very convenient to the Allentown fairgrounds so we decided to have dinner there before attending a concert. The inside is definitely dated but understandable based on how long they have been in business. We sat at a booth and our waitress was very nice and accommodating. This place is a gem in Allentown, PA! The place is over 70 years old! When you walk in you can tell the owner lane love what they do. It was clean and the service was very professional and friendly. First time ordering /getting take out here and we got a made to order burger, with a side of curly fries, mozzarella sticks, pretzel sticks appetizer and onion straw appetizer. First, the good, the burger was massive and has a flame grilled taste. Great burger, doesn't taste processed at all and it's probably the best in the area. The next best items were the onion straws and pretzels, really tasty apps and would definitely order again. Last the mozzarella sticks were okay, probably the only item I wouldn't order again. This place is a fine example of what is right in America. A full house for lunch on a Monday afternoon at 1:00pm. My family had such a wonderful experience here. I have eaten here many times and it's always great and consistent. My wife and son were first timer, and were ready for a great burger. The Wert Family delivered! Amazing cheeseburger club sandwich on deli rye. It was cooked to a most perfect medium. The add hard boiled egg to the club sandwich, which makes it even more savory. My wife and son both really enjoyed their burgers very much. Fresh cut fries and house made onions rings rounded out our experience. Wert's has the best burgers around! The decor isn't modern and there isn't anything fancy about the restaurant itself, but the food is amazing. Their onion straws are one of a kind and a must order. They have a delicious white birch beer on tap that is really good. Every time we come here, I'll get some kind of burger and my wife will get a burger or scallops. They use velveeta cheese and it pairs really well with a burger. Highly recommend the cheeseburger club, Ashley's pretzel burger, or just a regular cheeseburger. It's not only one of the best tasting burgers I've had, but it's cooked to perfection, from rare (someone I brought here ordered rare and he raved about it) to medium well (personal preference). All of their desserts are great as well. They taste like they were made by a neighborhood mom that used to bake really really well! I was in the area an met my mother for lunch. I wasn't happy with the food, but my mother ( 86 ) enjoyed her lunch. She had the Monte Cristo. I had the steak sandwich ( beef chip steak ) and an order of "onion rings'. They don't offer the onion rings as a side but only as an appetizer. Our waitress did say she could get me an order like what they put on the burgers, but I haven't had onion rings in a long time and since the menu labeled them as Wert's Famous, I went with the regular appetizer, which was a mistake. They weren't the typical sliced and breaded or batter dip rings, they were thinly sliced/shaved rings that were tossed in flour and deep fried. They had good onion flavor, hot and crisp for the first few minutes then they became limp. Definitely not was I was expecting and not very good. My steak sandwich was dry, it came with about 2 tbs of sauce and sautéed minced onions. I added ketchup to help with the flavor and moisture. I could have asked for more sauce, but the steak itself was dry. All in, it was okay, not anywhere near what I was expecting since there was a waiting line on a Tuesday. read more

My issue with their burger night deal is this; their 'onion straws' are gross! When I asked his wife who happened to be our server if could substitute the 'straws' for chips at least, she said no. Entranced by the menu selection, we ordered a delectable liverwurst and onion sandwich, a scrumptious Reuben with flawless fry sauce, and the *BEST BURGER EVER*, Tina's Onion Ring Cheese Burger with Velveeta‼ The perfectly juicy, delectably tasty patty was covered with crunchy onion rings and the incomparable melt of Velveeta. Famous Wert's Fries with lump crab and cheese sauce are well worth their fame. And the tapioca pudding--we got it with whipped cream and cinnamon--was sublime. All the desserts are homemade!
