After 15 years away, we decided to stop by for breakfast before heading to the local farmers markets. Our booth and table were sanitized and wiped down, the breakfast menu is a 2 sided page for easy reading, and our waitress, Erica, was so sweet in her demeanor, hustling, smiling, in a good mood. The pernil omelette was bursting with pulled pork, ham, cheeses, topped with tomatoes; substantial offering accompanied with 2 slices of rye toast and home fried potatoes, $13.95. The breakfast feast plate included a combination of 2 eggs, home fries, 2 fluffy pancakes and side of meat. $13.95. It is hard to find a good diner, with real diner food and service which seems like you are talking to an old friend. The Hellertown Diner is a real gem at the end of town. Parking is adequate...a tad scattered, however you are not far from the entrance. I was greeted and seated promptly. The interior is nothing special but comfortable/ modern but not overbearing which is exactly what you want. A young gal took care of my service needs nicely. I had a bona fide patty melt and fries and that was just great. And of course, you need a slice of pie and coffee to finish things up. I've been coming to the Hellertown diner for many years. I've had a few little problems where they've left off the chicken on my salad and I drove all the way home only to discover I was charged and it wasn't on the salad. That's one thing. What I experienced on Monday was a whole new level. I was eating my Greek salad and I tasted something absolutely disgusting and bitter. I spit out my bite and there was a green stink bug in it. I ran to the kitchen to rinse my mouth out and came back to find the bug scurrying across the table. I called the restaurant to tell them that they need to actually *wash* the lettuce because there was a pretty big bug in my salad and there was no apology, no offer to comp the salad, nothing. I don't think their "regular" customers mean anything to them. I go there twice a week and I don't think I will ever trust them again. Deeply disappointed. read more

Since changing ownership, the prices have definitely increased. Spent $46 today on a mediocre lunch for two. The split pea soup, which came with my lunch, was not very tasty and had some undercooked pieces of split peas in it. My husband's cup of chili was overly sweet. His chicken wings were decent. I had the fish tacos that came with 4 slices of avocado on it, not mentioned in the description on the menu. I have a terrible food sensitivity to avocado. I never thought to ask if it was going to be on fish tacos. The fish was over fried and hard. The slaw that was on top was drenched in a thousand island type dressing. Strange and not good! We tried takeout from the Hellertown diner after it's been under new ownership and we were not impressed. First, their prices are a little steep. We can go to the coop in Coopersburg for better quality and cheaper prices. Second, I ordered the chicken avocado wrap and it was $14 and said it came with fries or soup, coleslaw and a pickle. I upgraded to French onion soup to go but there was no coleslaw or pickle with the wrap. The soup was okay... I don't expect it to be amazing since it's something that's doesn't usually travel well but the flavor was just okay... My husband got the patty melt who also got soup instead of fries but no coleslaw or pickle with his meal either. He had the seafood bisque and that was really really good! The patty melt was dry unfortunately. The wrap was okay. Not something I would order again. Not impressed 1st warning sign - The diner is empty at breakfast hour- there were few other diners (2 couples and a man) at 9AM. 2nd warning sign - Waitress did not appear pleased to see us. I pulled them up and they were sticky on both sides and stuck together. My fingers were sticky after that. Food - - The home fries were like mashed potatoes that had been browned on one side. They were not home fries that I was ever familiar with such as sliced/cubed and fried - The butter on the toast was cold and "gooey". It didn't look like butter - It had a mayonnaise-like consistency. Enough so that I decided to forego eating my toast. And I love toast. - Sausage gravy - incredibly bland. Very few sausage bits, no pepper and no flavor whatsoever. It's like the recipe for a serving called for 1/4 cup of flour and someone added 3 cups of flour to make it last for more than 1 serving. - Otherwise the eggs were great , the coffee hot and juice cold and sweet (Juice glass was tiny) My recommendation - Not a place we would return to and spend ~$40 on a couple of breakfasts. Hellertown is the last sizeable town on the way north from Bucks County to Bethlehem in Northampton. It was a logical breakfast stop during an early morning drive to the car dealer for repairs. The diner by that name I found on Yelp with reasonably decent reviews, so that was our stop. The facility sits at the north end of the Hellerstown Shopping Center, dressed in dark yellow adobe, with entre at the side of the building. It is somewhat dated with booths, tables and short counter in two rooms, yet clean and efficiently run. It seems to be a gathering spot for the social security crowd, with large menu and discounted specials. We chose the Greek Omelet (w home fries and rye toast) and Sunnyside Up Eggs (potatoes & wheat). Both were substantial, with mundane coffee as part of the plan. The omelet plate was interestingly presented with straight edges for the fries and egg mix, like the grill had sections with metal walls separating each order. Even the fried eggs came with some of the same square corners. Too, everything was unusually thin and flat as if compressed. This process didn't really change the taste of everything, but did reduce the amount of ingredients involved. Small mugs for the java with only one refill offered early in the meal when not much had been consumed. Modern credit card system with screen to select percentage tips starting at 18%. We left a cash gratuity on the table and skipped this annoyance. It was subtle, but this Hellerstown Diner displayed an ungenerous spirit which did not welcome a return by these travelers. read more

This evening I was extremely tired so I stopped at the Hellertown diner to get a cup of coffee. It took the cashier ten minutes to ring in the coffee! She literally pressed button after button after button. When she finally got done she stood there and looked at me. I said, "are you getting me my coffee?" The cashier said, "that's the servers job not mine." Me: "You're not doing anything you get me the coffee!" Then they were all out of coffee so they had to brew a fresh pot. It took me fifteen minutes to get a cup of coffee! The entire time I was so incredibly tired and I was about ready to keel over on my feet. Worst customer service experience ever! Number one would be that the portions are huge but the food is indeed very, very bland. I've only ever come for breakfast but the eggs taste like nothing, the big ass slab of homefries that you're given with a lot of the entree choices are completely unseasoned to the point that sucking on a raw potato would taste the same and the bacon is usually limp and soggy even when you ask for it to be crisp. I've learned to stick with less "technical" things like the pancakes or the french toast. The place is usually packed even on weekdays but as others have also mentioned I don't think that necessarily is indicative of what they're rendering as much as the lack of options in the immediate area. I mean what are your nearby choices? This and the McD's across the street. After that it's either three or four miles to the nearest option which is a Waffle House and then you're going a few more miles into Bethlehem so they know they have a captive audience. Also as a word to the wise, I wouldn't try to skip out on the bill or complain about anything. I am giving this diner three stars because it's usually a good experience but our last experience was not the best. On July 12 my mother in law and I came here for lunch. I ordered the chicken salad on a Kaiser roll with American cheese. As I was eating it, I bit down on something hard and here was a chicken bone in my chicken salad. I called the waitress over and told her. She offered to make me another sandwich and I declined because: 1. I was squicked out about finding a bone in my chicken salad 2. I'd eaten half of my sandwich. She told me she'd let the chef know and left the table. I ate the rest of my sandwich but I really didn't enjoy it. I took this picture. This was our first time here and probably wouldn't return. Staff was very friendly, but the food was mediocre for the prices. Breakfast for 2 ended up costing us $40 which in my opinion is pretty steep for 2 regular omelettes an extra pancake and 1 coffee. After paying the bill with cash the hostess indicated that they will discount the price because they have a "credit card fee" built in. Not exactly sure where they're "building" that in, but I can tell you after looking at the menu online the prices there differ $1-$2 for some of the menu. I've only been here once but I won't return. First my girlfriend and I were seated at a dirty table. After being seated the bus boy came by and cleaned our table by brushing all the crumbs from the table onto our laps with a soggy rag. The food was just ok.
