Gohan is a Japanese breakfast spot located off King Street next to Easy Music Center. It's got a cozy interior for dine-in only Japanese breakfast sets. They also offer musubi for take out or dine-in. However, I'd highly recommend dining in! There are a couple set meals that come with miso soup (or you can upgrade to a pork soup), tsukemono, and a couple appetizers. They also offer chazuke which is delicious! Everything is made in-house. Food tastes fresh, comforting, and well-balanced. Service is quick and efficient. Meals come out very quickly. You can observe the staff preparing your food if you sit at the counter. The only downside is the parking situation. There's street parking or validated parking in the building, but the validation requires a $25 minimum spend. Chances are better earlier in the morning when street spots are easier to grab. Overall a tasty, healthy, quick meal to grab for breakfast. Recommended!
Who knew? Opens at 8 am sharp! Gohan employees eager to serve you a great breakfast. Parking in the building is available (i don't know if they validate parking) or street parking on either side of King street between 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM This is my take of this establishment 1- can't get better Rice anywhere on this island you'd have to go to Japan to get this type of Rice, the quality and the way they steam and prepare it, by far, the best 2- pricing is more reasonable than many other places I can go for breakfast (average price for breakfast $15 including tip) 3- conveniently located on the ground floor of the 1314 S. King Street building. Walk-in, you'll feel as if you stepped into a shop in Japan. Friendliest service, great pricing, great location, everything's great about this place Go there or be square
Great experience eating here for lunch. Staff were really nice and food was fresh and delicious. My friend and I were able to get seated right away. We arrived at 10:30am and then realized he just missed the breakfast menu option. But it's okay because their regular menu was enough for us. Ordered the pork miso soup. Worth it!!! So tasty and flavorful. They did not skimp on the veggies and thinly sliced pork in the soup. I ordered the tuna mayo, spicy ahi, and unagi. Food came fast and each. My favorite was the spicy ahi! The unagi was a nice thick piece and a perfect amount of spice ahi. Rice is cooked to perfection and everything was seasoned very well. There is a private lot connected to the building. They validate, I think the first hour is free and we must have stayed an extra hour, so paid $2.00 for parking, not bad.
Gohan is located at the Interstate Building where Easy Music Center is located. They're on the ground floor in suite G3. My husband parked as I waited in the car. I had no idea what we were here for. He handed me a brown paper bag with the name, Gohan, on it when he returned. He thought that maybe I wanted to try it out. There were two musubis in the bag: konbu $3.50 and chicken karaage $4.75. They were both yummy. I would say that the rice stood out the most. It was perfection. I liked the umami of the konbu. The chicken kaarage was no longer crispy, which was fine. I liked that they kept the seaweed wrapper separate from the rice. You just wrap it yourself when you're ready to consume it. My husband was laughing at me in the car, because I had the hardest time wrapping it. Yes, I need to go to musubi making school, lol.
I had a nice experience trying the Unagi Dashi Chazuke Set. The flavors were mild and comforting--a satisfying meal. My only note is to watch out for the fine, concentrated section of brush-like bones in the eel, though they were easy enough to separate before diving in. The service was remarkably quick and efficient! I would be interested in revisiting to try the onigiri selections.
Located in the Easy Music center building! I suggest to park in the structure as they validate parking. It was easy in and out. The structure is a little tight though. My hubby and I arrived around 11:30am and it was empty expect for one party of 4. We were seated immediately. Since I'm pregnant, the food options were less for me, but there were still tasty choices. My favorite was the pork kakuni and my husbands favorite was a grilled miso negi. I was full after two rolls, but I hope to return for some raw options in the future!
Been here a few times while waiting for my younger brother to finish up his music lessons at the Easy Music Center next door and I never get tired of their rolls! I've only been here on Saturday mornings and afternoons, and the wait time varies between 10 - 30 minutes. It doesn't seem like there's an online reservation system and you'll be seated on a first come, first served basis based on when you jot down your name on the clipboard a little bit past the entrance. Gohan is on the smaller side and I'd recommend only coming here with a small group of people (no more than four). It may be difficult to eat here if you have a wheelchair or a stroller because of the lack of space. The space is really clean and they offer disposable wipes on the table for you to wipe your hands with. Even though I don't personally eat any seafood, they have a few non-seafood options that I absolutely love. My favorite is the pork kakuni hand roll ($4.95/roll as of 6/2026)! The meat itself is very tender and coated in a savory sauce. Be warned that it can get *very* messy to eat haha. I love that they have a set menu as well as daily specials! They're pretty active on Instagram (@gohan.hawaii) and you can look at the daily specials on their story before heading over. I really like looking out for any new drinks and desserts, but maybe that's because I have a bit of a sweet tooth. From their set menu though, I highly recommend the Vietnamese Coffee drink! Doesn't have a strong coffee taste and has just the right amount of sweetness to it. Parking wise, you'll either need to find street parking or park in the parking structure attached to the building. You can validate your parking ticket at Gohan once you pay for your food. Do note that the validation may only provide a large discount and that you might have to pay a couple of dollars or so when you leave the structure.
TL;DR: Gohan serves a solid Japanese breakfast on select days of the week, consisting of a musubi bento or chazuke along with side dishes including a rich pork miso soup. Parking validation for 1 hr ($25 spend required). 1/FOOD: We came to Gohan for their Japanese breakfast service which happens on select days of the week. We got both the musubi bento and the chazuke. Both were delicious! The bento came with a pork miso soup which was rich and flavorful, much more than standard miso soup. The latter didn't come with the soup, but that's because it is soup. Definitely get the chazuke rice grilled and add ikura! Sides included traditional Japanese pickles. A typical Japanese breakfast comes with grilled fish. They offer grilled salmon and mackerel here, but it doesn't come with the set. Order it separately! They also have takeout bento and musubi not on the standard menu at the front... check it out for takeaway. 2/SERVICE: It gets busy with limited seating. If you have two people or less, the counter is a good option. They do have tables as well for larger groups, or for two people if they're not busy and you ask. The staff is very much Japanese. 3/LOCATION: It's in an office building which means there is a parking garage. You get validated parking, but you need to spend $25 to get 1 hour validated... otherwise you only get 30 minutes.
Came here on a weekday during breakfast hours. Fortunately did not have to wait in line. I love the simplicity of the menu here and reliable deliciousness of an onigiri. We got two breakfast sets with two onigiri each, miso soup, and tsukemono. Also got a karaage hand roll that had very tender & juicy chicken meat. It was very filling and the restaurant itself almost felt like we were back in Japan. Would definitely come again to dine in or pick up onigiri to go.
Gohan is a cute little restaurant with limited seating. From what I saw, there was one table for 2, one table for 6, and two tables for 4, so it feels more like a cozy neighborhood spot rather than a large dine-in restaurant. I can't give a full review since I didn't dine in, but I ordered the chicken karaage, kakuni, and the Ume Shirasu Musubi. The musubi itself was good quality -- they use high-quality rice, which definitely makes a difference. I also liked that the nori was given separately so it stayed crisp instead of getting soggy. The only reason I took off a star was because I expected the musubi to be freshly made when ordering. Instead, they handed me one that was already sitting on the shelf for customers to grab, so the rice was cold. I think if someone orders directly, it should be made fresh with warm rice. Overall, the ingredients and flavors were solid, and I'd still be interested in trying more items in the future.
Had a lovely Friday morning breakfast here with a friend who was running late, and the server was so nice timing it so our food came at the perfect time! We both got the salmon and ikura ochazuke with grilled rice and it was so nourishing and satisfying to start the day. Loved the little assortments of pickles on the side too. No problem finding parking nearby and there were plenty available seats still. Would love to come back :)
We went on a Wednesday morning at a little after 8:00 am, they have just opened and already had a few customers. It is a very cute, nicely decorated and quaint shop, they have a few counter seats and a few tables. We ordered the breakfast musubi platter, it comes with two musubis (you can choose different toppings from the list), it included three small appetizers and miso soup; all for $13.95. Today, the three appetizers were gobo, japanese pickles and grilled tofu with salmon. Oh, I think It is a must to upgrade the soup to the special pork miso soup for an additional $2; it was hot, full of pork and vegetables and so delicious, a perfect match for the warm musubi. We chose the musubis with tuna mayo, mentaiko, saba and salmon; they were served with crispy nori sheets; all very delicious. They also use the good imported Japanese rice, which I think they also sell in bags. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the food until we were almost finished eating. They have two bottles of Japanese chili flakes on the tables; we really like the seven spice blend flakes. It is a little spicy with a super nice citrus smell; add a little to the warm musubi and it will take it to the next level. The service was friendly, courteous and efficient, everything you will expect from an authentic Japanese restaurant. There are visitors parking in the building, the typical QR code parking system; the first hour is free, and I think they also validate. There were many customers coming in for takeout iced coffee and musubi. I think next time we will try the coffee. I can't wait to come back and try the other musubis.
Friendly and fun! It's taken me a long time to eat here....their hours don't line up with my schedule, so it's been a little tricky to eat here. But worth the wait! The restaurant in on the smaller side, but definitely a nice size. It looks like they are equipped for dine in service, as well as take out food. The waitstaff and workers her are very nice and pleasant to deal with. Everyone was kind and full of smiles. I was able to eat here with a friend when they opened in the morning at 8am...hand rolls for breakfast is a win! We sat at the bar seating and I tried... Chicken karaage hand roll Aburi salmon hand roll Unagi hand roll Tonjiru soup All of it was good, but the unagi was definitely my favorite...so soft and yummy The hand rolls were made in front of us while we watched. They dont have a 'real' kitchen, but they make it work. It was fun to watch how they create the delicious hand rolls. Ill be back to try some of the other items!
Calling all rice lovers! Gohan is a new musubi and hand rolls lunch spot located on the ground level of the Interstate Building. They use Tsuyahime rice from the Yamagata Prefecture that is extremely fresh and well seasoned. The spicy tuna and hamachi were delicious. My only feedback would be that the hand rolls are packed with an overwhelmingly amount of rice where they fall apart easily. My personal preference is a little less rice compared to other hand roll spots in town such as Nori Bar and Obake. Other than that, the food is wonderful. A standout item for me was the special pork miso soup. This is a must! The atmosphere is cozy and intimate with a sushi counter that seats only seven guests and tables that seat about 14 guests total. You add your name to their waitlist upon arrival for dine in. I came around noon and only had to wait about five minutes. They have plenty of takeout options too. The service was fantastic and I hope they are successful! read more

visited Gohan and tried a variety of items: the hamachi jalapeño hand roll, unagi hand roll, grilled musubi, spicy tuna hand roll, and yuzu ikura hand roll. While everything was fresh and flavorful, two items truly stood out. The hamachi jalapeño hand roll was a perfect combination of buttery fish and just the right kick from the jalapeño--so well-balanced. But the star of the meal was the unagi hand roll, hands down the best thing I ate in Hawaii. The unagi was tender, perfectly fatty, and naturally sweet, with a melt-in-your-mouth quality that I can't stop thinking about. I also had their matcha, which was excellent--rich and earthy without being overpowering. Service was fantastic, attentive yet relaxed, which added to the overall experience. Gohan is a must-visit if you're craving high-quality hand rolls and great vibes. read more

Quality ingredients, limited menu, good ambiance, shaky service, and barely passable flavors. Gohan--Japanese for "rice"--sort of lives up to its name: too much rice, too little flavor. If you're running a rice-focused joint, the rice needs to shine. Here, Gohan comes up short. At top-tier spots like Kaiten, each grain of rice is so perfect you might excuse someone for eating a single grain off their plate. At Gohan, I was wishing more rice would fall out of my hand roll. For a place named after rice, it's a shame the rice had so little flavor. Service was a comedy of errors. The staff and sushi chefs couldn't keep track of orders--whether something was ordered at all or who it was for. Nearly every patron within earshot had to either remind the staff what they ordered or reject food that wasn't theirs. The proteins were decently prepared but lacked anything memorable. No shoyu was provided, which I assumed meant the chefs wanted their hand rolls and musubi to stand on their own. They didn't. Prices were just OK. Though spam and egg musubi at $4.50 is a stretch, there's a bright spot: some proteins, like the chicken karaage, unagi, and shrimp tempura, are cooked to order. The chefs also assemble hand rolls with care. Unfortunately, that effort exceeded the flavors they delivered. I love sushi, I like hand rolls, and Gohan's rice should be the star of the show--both because of the name and the musubi focus. If they ever figure out how to season their rice properly, let me know, and I'll give it another shot. Until then, I'm out, and I suggest you skip it too. read more

New business, just opened for a few weeks so we decided to give it a try. Onigiri is good tasting but packed very loose. Good selections, gonna come back and try the different ones. We had Tonjiru, pork miso soup. This was wonderful, full.of flavor. Salted onigiri, couldn't taste the salt. Salmon Ikura, great tasting. Yuzu ikura, had salmon and ikura with a yuzu taste. Something different but tastes good. Hamachi jalapeño hand roll, this was the winner of the onigiri/handrolls. read more
The food here is so good! If you appreciate great rice you'll love this place. We got the Mentaiko Cheese yaki-musubi, Konbu Musubi, Unagi Handroll, and Karaage handroll. They were all really amazing. The Unagi in particular was very soft and well-seasoned. A lot of the reviews on here site slow service but it seems like they may have been from when the restaurant first opened. Our waiter and the staff were all very friendly. Our food took a bit of time but it wasn't unreasonable. While the restaurant is small and seating is limited, the decor is nice and cozy. Highly recommend! read more

This review is for my notes Located right next to Easy Music Center on King Street (entrance is not on the street but as soon as you enter the building). Ordered some items ahead because they said it can take 10 minutes to prepare (grilled musubi). Tried the nori salmon musubi, tonkatsu, pork kakuni, yuzu ikura, spicy karaage, grilled shoyu, and grilled mentaiko cheese. My favorites were the grilled shoyu (biased), yuzu ikura (ikura is my favorite so also biased) and the tonkatsu musubi. The nori is provided separately so it stays crispy (except the grilled ones which don't come with nori). The nori was super delicious too! You can call in or even text your order in advance. read more
The food is great! The musubis are awesome and they have a decent selection of musubis (watch out for the specials!) The service is fantastic, everyone is so friendly and helpful! It's a nice small quaint atmosphere where you can sit at a table or the "musubi bar" or you can get takeout. GET THERE EARLY! They have a grab and go section but the musubis run out quickly, however they can make any musubi to order. The best thing about the musubis is the rice and the nori! They order rice from Japan and then they mill it here! My favorite one I've tried is the spicy tuna and I usually do not care for spicy tuna that much. I mean I like it but it's not my first choice! I'm looking forward to trying a whole bunch of other musubis. When I go I try not to over order because that's rather easy! My favorite thing there is the tonjiru which is their special pork miso soup. A must try if you're a miso soup lover! Check it out, totally worth it! Just be aware they have limited hours and open early and close early, so that's something to note. Highly recommend and hopefully I can go back for my 4th time very soon! read more

I went in yesterday and probably would've given only 1 star. The man waiting the front was very hectic kinda all over the place didn't acknowledge us(understandable because it was busy) but me and my friend ended up waiting a long time just to be forgotten. So we decided to leave. Decided to come back today and give Gohan and second chance. Thankful we did because not only was the food DELICIOUS but the service was awesome! The tall guy who was running the register and the floor was so nice and accommodating. Kept on saying sorry for the wait and checking up on us even though he was slammed busy. Thanks to him and the food this review was saved from being a one star. The spicy ahi roll was amazing! Definitely would recommend. Also the pork miso soup which was recommended by our server and the yuzu ikura was so good! Will definitely be back when things are not as busy. read more

I'm not sure what's wrong with the management of this restaurant, they have so many empty tables, but they never like to seat the customers and let them standing outside and wait. This place only sits about 21 people and there are about 8 to 9 people working in the restaurant, I do not think it is understaff, it is just poor management. I saw empty seat for 10 minutes and they just do not let us sit down. TBH, by the time I sit down, I was already upset about the unnecessary wait time that put a bad taste in our mouth. The menu is simple, basically, if you like to eat a lot of rice, this is the place for you. The spicy tuna handroll taste the best, the hamachi handroll is so so. I ordered a salmon Ikura musubi, so much rice. The miso soup is average, nothing outstanding. They do partial validation for the parking if you park inside the building. Sorry man, very bad first experience for us, not going back. read more

Food was amazing! Each hand roll we ordered was top tier! Small restaurant but overall great service and quality in food. They had us in and out without feeling rushed at all. Price for food didn't hurt the pockets as the portion of each hand roll was very generous. Restaurant was nicely set up for a Japanese comfort setting. I would recommend anyone who likes a good hand roll to make the stop! read more

Good variety from a small menu. My favorite was the spicy tuna hand roll. The nori is delicious. Staff is so friendly. Small place, so if full there is a waiting list to sign up on. Spent $18 power person. Parking lot with partial validation. Recommend so very much!! Go get it! read more

Seen this place on social media and I wanted to see if what they said was true. Well yes they have an affordable Japanese breakfast. I chose the first option as i wasn't in the mood to eat handheld food (musubi). I upgraded to the pork miso soup, which is an extra two dollars. I added Portuguese sausage and grilled salmon just made the meal a little more hardy with more protein. If you need to increase your protein intake, they had an appetizer special of candied, sweet potatoes it was delicious and so I was OK paying the three dollars for it. All in all it was a very affordable breakfast for what I got the rice was delicious very shiny and complimented my dishes perfectly. The salmon wasn't overly salty, which is great if you have to watch your salt intake. I wish it was a little more salty though like how Shirokiya's grilled salmon was. I enjoyed it anyway as it was not dry but perfectly cooked and a decent size portion for what I paid if you do want something salty get the Portuguese sausage as that even out the meal. The staff is friendly and you can see they work hard to create these wonderful dishes. Ambience is beautiful in there clean bright a nice warm happy feeling just like your stomach feels after eating here. read more

Saw this new onigiri and temaki restaurant on IG and was glad I went. The food is pretty superb. they have a seven seat counter area where you can watch the chefs and several small table throughout the space. They also have a grab and go shelves near the entrance with various items laid out but you really need to eat here to fully enjoy the food. The rice is Tsuyahime from Yamagate prefecture. I always thought this was one of the premium strains in Japan. The nori is from the Ariake sea. The area is noteworthy for having superior nori. I was pleasantly surprised by the prices and portions here. Unlike other noteworthy onigiri places on the island, Gohan provides a generous portion of rice in each order. The rice is perfectly cooked being neither to dry/hard nor mosit/squishy. Just right for a good onigiri or temaki. The various toppings were delicious and complemented the rice well. We had salmon, hamachi jalepeno, yuzu shirokara, mentaiko, spicy shrimp tempura, chicken karaage, and pork kakuni. The hamachi, shirokara and kakuni were especially delicious. To accompany you can order soup or tsukemono. The tonjiru was especially well done. Wife said the Vietnamese Coffee was also delcious. Service was quick and friendly. Still working some minor bugs out but the staff was so friendly and helpful. All in all, the setting was relaxing and the food was both delcious and fairly priced. Will definitely be back. read more
