Gohan is a Japanese breakfast spot located off King Street next to Easy Music Center. It's got a cozy interior for dine-in only Japanese breakfast sets. They also offer musubi for take out or dine-in. However, I'd highly recommend dining in! There are a couple set meals that come with miso soup (or you can upgrade to a pork soup), tsukemono, and a couple appetizers. They also offer chazuke which is delicious! Everything is made in-house. Food tastes fresh, comforting, and well-balanced. Service is quick and efficient. Meals come out very quickly. You can observe the staff preparing your food if you sit at the counter. The only downside is the parking situation. There's street parking or validated parking in the building, but the validation requires a $25 minimum spend. Chances are better earlier in the morning when street spots are easier to grab. Overall a tasty, healthy, quick meal to grab for breakfast. Recommended!
Who knew? Opens at 8 am sharp! Gohan employees eager to serve you a great breakfast. Parking in the building is available (i don't know if they validate parking) or street parking on either side of King street between 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM This is my take of this establishment 1- can't get better Rice anywhere on this island you'd have to go to Japan to get this type of Rice, the quality and the way they steam and prepare it, by far, the best 2- pricing is more reasonable than many other places I can go for breakfast (average price for breakfast $15 including tip) 3- conveniently located on the ground floor of the 1314 S. King Street building. Walk-in, you'll feel as if you stepped into a shop in Japan. Friendliest service, great pricing, great location, everything's great about this place Go there or be square
Great experience eating here for lunch. Staff were really nice and food was fresh and delicious. My friend and I were able to get seated right away. We arrived at 10:30am and then realized he just missed the breakfast menu option. But it's okay because their regular menu was enough for us. Ordered the pork miso soup. Worth it!!! So tasty and flavorful. They did not skimp on the veggies and thinly sliced pork in the soup. I ordered the tuna mayo, spicy ahi, and unagi. Food came fast and each. My favorite was the spicy ahi! The unagi was a nice thick piece and a perfect amount of spice ahi. Rice is cooked to perfection and everything was seasoned very well. There is a private lot connected to the building. They validate, I think the first hour is free and we must have stayed an extra hour, so paid $2.00 for parking, not bad.
Gohan is located at the Interstate Building where Easy Music Center is located. They're on the ground floor in suite G3. My husband parked as I waited in the car. I had no idea what we were here for. He handed me a brown paper bag with the name, Gohan, on it when he returned. He thought that maybe I wanted to try it out. There were two musubis in the bag: konbu $3.50 and chicken karaage $4.75. They were both yummy. I would say that the rice stood out the most. It was perfection. I liked the umami of the konbu. The chicken kaarage was no longer crispy, which was fine. I liked that they kept the seaweed wrapper separate from the rice. You just wrap it yourself when you're ready to consume it. My husband was laughing at me in the car, because I had the hardest time wrapping it. Yes, I need to go to musubi making school, lol.
I had a nice experience trying the Unagi Dashi Chazuke Set. The flavors were mild and comforting--a satisfying meal. My only note is to watch out for the fine, concentrated section of brush-like bones in the eel, though they were easy enough to separate before diving in. The service was remarkably quick and efficient! I would be interested in revisiting to try the onigiri selections.
Located in the Easy Music center building! I suggest to park in the structure as they validate parking. It was easy in and out. The structure is a little tight though. My hubby and I arrived around 11:30am and it was empty expect for one party of 4. We were seated immediately. Since I'm pregnant, the food options were less for me, but there were still tasty choices. My favorite was the pork kakuni and my husbands favorite was a grilled miso negi. I was full after two rolls, but I hope to return for some raw options in the future!
Been here a few times while waiting for my younger brother to finish up his music lessons at the Easy Music Center next door and I never get tired of their rolls! I've only been here on Saturday mornings and afternoons, and the wait time varies between 10 - 30 minutes. It doesn't seem like there's an online reservation system and you'll be seated on a first come, first served basis based on when you jot down your name on the clipboard a little bit past the entrance. Gohan is on the smaller side and I'd recommend only coming here with a small group of people (no more than four). It may be difficult to eat here if you have a wheelchair or a stroller because of the lack of space. The space is really clean and they offer disposable wipes on the table for you to wipe your hands with. Even though I don't personally eat any seafood, they have a few non-seafood options that I absolutely love. My favorite is the pork kakuni hand roll ($4.95/roll as of 6/2026)! The meat itself is very tender and coated in a savory sauce. Be warned that it can get *very* messy to eat haha. I love that they have a set menu as well as daily specials! They're pretty active on Instagram (@gohan.hawaii) and you can look at the daily specials on their story before heading over. I really like looking out for any new drinks and desserts, but maybe that's because I have a bit of a sweet tooth. From their set menu though, I highly recommend the Vietnamese Coffee drink! Doesn't have a strong coffee taste and has just the right amount of sweetness to it. Parking wise, you'll either need to find street parking or park in the parking structure attached to the building. You can validate your parking ticket at Gohan once you pay for your food. Do note that the validation may only provide a large discount and that you might have to pay a couple of dollars or so when you leave the structure.
TL;DR: Gohan serves a solid Japanese breakfast on select days of the week, consisting of a musubi bento or chazuke along with side dishes including a rich pork miso soup. Parking validation for 1 hr ($25 spend required). 1/FOOD: We came to Gohan for their Japanese breakfast service which happens on select days of the week. We got both the musubi bento and the chazuke. Both were delicious! The bento came with a pork miso soup which was rich and flavorful, much more than standard miso soup. The latter didn't come with the soup, but that's because it is soup. Definitely get the chazuke rice grilled and add ikura! Sides included traditional Japanese pickles. A typical Japanese breakfast comes with grilled fish. They offer grilled salmon and mackerel here, but it doesn't come with the set. Order it separately! They also have takeout bento and musubi not on the standard menu at the front... check it out for takeaway. 2/SERVICE: It gets busy with limited seating. If you have two people or less, the counter is a good option. They do have tables as well for larger groups, or for two people if they're not busy and you ask. The staff is very much Japanese. 3/LOCATION: It's in an office building which means there is a parking garage. You get validated parking, but you need to spend $25 to get 1 hour validated... otherwise you only get 30 minutes.
Came here on a weekday during breakfast hours. Fortunately did not have to wait in line. I love the simplicity of the menu here and reliable deliciousness of an onigiri. We got two breakfast sets with two onigiri each, miso soup, and tsukemono. Also got a karaage hand roll that had very tender & juicy chicken meat. It was very filling and the restaurant itself almost felt like we were back in Japan. Would definitely come again to dine in or pick up onigiri to go.
Gohan is a cute little restaurant with limited seating. From what I saw, there was one table for 2, one table for 6, and two tables for 4, so it feels more like a cozy neighborhood spot rather than a large dine-in restaurant. I can't give a full review since I didn't dine in, but I ordered the chicken karaage, kakuni, and the Ume Shirasu Musubi. The musubi itself was good quality -- they use high-quality rice, which definitely makes a difference. I also liked that the nori was given separately so it stayed crisp instead of getting soggy. The only reason I took off a star was because I expected the musubi to be freshly made when ordering. Instead, they handed me one that was already sitting on the shelf for customers to grab, so the rice was cold. I think if someone orders directly, it should be made fresh with warm rice. Overall, the ingredients and flavors were solid, and I'd still be interested in trying more items in the future.
Had a lovely Friday morning breakfast here with a friend who was running late, and the server was so nice timing it so our food came at the perfect time! We both got the salmon and ikura ochazuke with grilled rice and it was so nourishing and satisfying to start the day. Loved the little assortments of pickles on the side too. No problem finding parking nearby and there were plenty available seats still. Would love to come back :)
We went on a Wednesday morning at a little after 8:00 am, they have just opened and already had a few customers. It is a very cute, nicely decorated and quaint shop, they have a few counter seats and a few tables. We ordered the breakfast musubi platter, it comes with two musubis (you can choose different toppings from the list), it included three small appetizers and miso soup; all for $13.95. Today, the three appetizers were gobo, japanese pickles and grilled tofu with salmon. Oh, I think It is a must to upgrade the soup to the special pork miso soup for an additional $2; it was hot, full of pork and vegetables and so delicious, a perfect match for the warm musubi. We chose the musubis with tuna mayo, mentaiko, saba and salmon; they were served with crispy nori sheets; all very delicious. They also use the good imported Japanese rice, which I think they also sell in bags. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the food until we were almost finished eating. They have two bottles of Japanese chili flakes on the tables; we really like the seven spice blend flakes. It is a little spicy with a super nice citrus smell; add a little to the warm musubi and it will take it to the next level. The service was friendly, courteous and efficient, everything you will expect from an authentic Japanese restaurant. There are visitors parking in the building, the typical QR code parking system; the first hour is free, and I think they also validate. There were many customers coming in for takeout iced coffee and musubi. I think next time we will try the coffee. I can't wait to come back and try the other musubis.
Friendly and fun! It's taken me a long time to eat here....their hours don't line up with my schedule, so it's been a little tricky to eat here. But worth the wait! The restaurant in on the smaller side, but definitely a nice size. It looks like they are equipped for dine in service, as well as take out food. The waitstaff and workers her are very nice and pleasant to deal with. Everyone was kind and full of smiles. I was able to eat here with a friend when they opened in the morning at 8am...hand rolls for breakfast is a win! We sat at the bar seating and I tried... Chicken karaage hand roll Aburi salmon hand roll Unagi hand roll Tonjiru soup All of it was good, but the unagi was definitely my favorite...so soft and yummy The hand rolls were made in front of us while we watched. They dont have a 'real' kitchen, but they make it work. It was fun to watch how they create the delicious hand rolls. Ill be back to try some of the other items!

Gohan is located in King St. downstairs next to the Easy Music Center, so street parking is probably the easiest. Take out or dine in is available here! I came to try some of their hand rolls for lunch. I ordered the spicy tuna, deep fried tofu miso, and the pork kakuni. The spicy tuna and deep fried tofu were both amazing, but the pork kakuni was the star of the show!! Tender, juicy (from the fat), umami, and a little bit smoky/charred. I also got their weekly special yuzu daikon as my appetizer which was crunchy and refreshing with that touch of yuzu. Service was fast and friendly. This is the PERFECT place for a casual date night or lunch with a friend & I'll definitely be back! read more
I've been wanting to check out Gohan on King Street, and I'm glad I finally did! If you love Japanese comfort food, this is definitely a spot to try. They have a really nice selection of onigiri, chazuke, hand rolls, musubi, bentos and more. I like that you can stop in for a quick grab-and-go meal or sit down and enjoy something warm and comforting. It's like walking off of King street and into a small Japanese shop in Japan, with the service and atmosphere to match. Everything we tried tasted fresh, simple and really well done. Sometimes you don't need anything fancy -- just good rice, good ingredients and food that hits the spot. Definitely a nice addition to the King Street area, especially if you're looking for Japanese food that's casual and easy. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu! read more

Tasty place for a small bite to eat. We got the pork miso soup, hamachi jalapeño hand roll, and spicy tuna hand roll. The miso soup was very flavorful and Rick from the pork and had lots of meat and vegetables in it. The veggies were nice and soft. The hamachi hand roll was the best! Not fishy tasting and super fresh. The spicy tuna hand roll was not my favorite as the tuna was minced. Minced fish has a mushy texture but I know some people enjoy it, but it's not for me. Service was fast and casual. We sat for a while just chatting and we were not rushed out. I would come back again read more
Decided to go here after finding it on Yelp! It did not disappoint, this was probably the best handrolls & onigiri I have eaten. The restaurant is small but quite beautiful, definitely would look great at night. They seated us with a bit of a wait but they were very fast and hospitable. Grilled mentaiko + cheese onigiri: Amazing and worth the wait, so flavorful too, 8/10. Wish they had a grilled tuna + mayo onigiri. Spicy tuna hand roll: so good too, very flavorful. It is also a had a nice level of spice but I wish they had more rice to balance out the very strong flavor, 7/10. Salmon onigiri: this one was a bit disappointing because it was a little dry. It's a regular salmon onigiri, 5/10. read more

This place gets busy! I came here to have lunch with my boyfriend and had to wait a bit to get seated. They have a few tables and bar seating. We ordered the pork Kakuni, grilled unagi and one of their specials for the day which was a steak hand roll. All of them were so yummy! But I think my favorite would probably be the pork Kakuni one since it was so tender. You can tell all the ingredients are really high quality. We also got the Vietnam coffee and hojicha latte for drinks and those were pretty good too! Even though it may be a wait to get seated, the service was quick and the food made it well worth it! read more

Gohan provides high quality onigiri in a world of musubi - the rice grain AND the seaweed are top notch and elevate the mouth feel of each bite. I do recommend dining there rather than takeout, as they do offer validated parking for the building they're in, but their takeout option isn't bad either as they wrap the seaweed separately to maintain its crispiness. They have a breakfast menu and an all day menu - the former has the salmon chazuke bowl which I love, with the option of add-ons like torched rice and ikura. I also tried their grilled musubi which was delicious as well, though simple. The store is pretty small so on the weekends there can be a bit of a wait, but service is fast. read more
Parking: street or validated lot within the building (if bill is greater than $25) Service: both take out and table service Ambiance: casual, warm, great place for a quick bite Food: offering both breakfast and lunch service. did take out and was easy to call in an order. For take out, they individually pack each onigiri and keep the nori separate. read more
I went during their breakfast hours because I was waiting for an appointment. I got the musubi platter - tuna mayo and salmon. It also comes with miso soup and tsukemono. Very cute presentation, felt like I was in Japan again. Food was yummy. The tuna mayo had a kind of citrus taste to it. The salmon flakes were savory and not fishy. Surprisingly busy for getting there right at 8 AM. Service was quick and attentive. read more
Second visit to Gohan on South King St., where the Easy Music Center is located. They specialize in rice dishes - using Tsuyahime rice from Yamagata - musubi, temaki sushi, and bentos. It is set up like a sushi bar only it is a musubi bar...they also offer grilled musubi. They have counter seating and a few tables...dining area is small. I've gotten a few musubis and a Karaage Chicken Bento. I don't have the palate to fully appreciate quality rice but their plain Shio Musibi is as good as I've had. They run out quickly when it comes to their grab-n-go items. My favorite is the Kakuni ( shoyu marinated pork belly ) Musubi. It was great. Open for a it over a year...they are open daily - except Sunday - from 800a till 200p. Parking...three steet metered stalls...and in the building. read more
Excellent cheap eat! Gohan has lots of onigiri and hand roll options that are mostly $3-4, both available for grab-and-go takeout or made to order for dine in. I had 3, which was the perfect amount of food. They use high quality rice, nori, and salt which sets the onigiri apart, especially at this affordable price. You have to pay at the register up front even for dine-in, but the service was overall very good and our food came quickly. They have a few small tables inside and we had no trouble finding a table on a weekday holiday, and they validate parking for free. read more

High quality ingredients make Gohan's Musubis exceptional. I stopped by after an appointment in the same building and grabbed some Musubis to go. It's located in the interstate building along King St on the left side where Easy Music Center is on the ground level. Inside makes you feel transported to a quaint Japanese eatery with table and bar seating. By the door are premade Musubis lining the wall. I tried the salmon, mentaiko, and pork Kakuni. My favorite, the pork was a nice sized piece with a bit of tender fat and drizzled with mayo and unagi sauce. The addition of lettuce gave it a contrasting crunchy texture. They separate the nori and it is so crisp and has a delicious flavor of its own. Overall the Musubis are a bit more expensive than other spots, pork is $4 something. But the care and quality exceed most other Musubis. read more

Gohan is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Honolulu. I ordered the salmon ikura dashi chazuke with the TKG egg set, natto on the side, and hot green tea--comforting, flavorful, and it definitely hit the spot. Service is always great, and they also have a nice selection of musubi and bento to-go. Parking is convenient with garage validation if you can't find street parking. The space is a bit small, so larger parties may want to call ahead. Always a solid choice for breakfast. read more

Finally had a chance to try Gohan - you feel transported back to Japan other than the prices! We were looking for a quick lunch and decided to try Gohan one day. There is parking in the building and they validate - although I believe it's only 30 minutes so you'll have to pay $2 or more depending how long you stay. Luckily there was a problem with the parking machine and ours was free...score! As for the food, we were able to get a table quickly. The menu is small - of course mostly musubis but they have a variety of topping options. I opted for a classic salmon onigiri, mentaiko cream cheese yaki onigiri and homemade tonjiru. If you are dining in, they do take your order and bring your items to your table but you can also do takeout from their corner near the door with pre-made musubis. The classic onigiri was good - an average musubi. I don't think you can go wrong. I would say it's a bit small for the price (about $3) but it's a classic onigiri. The standouts for me were the tonjiru and the yaki onigiri. I love tonjiru and could tell this one was very well made. It came packed with veggies and meat which I appreciate. And the mentaiko cream cheese yaki onigiri blew me away. I would come back just for this! The flavor combo was so good and textures of the grilled onigiri were so delicious. Pro tip - if doing take out, they are doing a special for 30% off musubis after 1:30 pm! read more
Gohan in Honolulu is a must-visit for musubi lovers--fresh, flavorful, and full of heart. Their made-to-order handrolls and warm rice balls are a comforting, delicious experience that feels both homey and elevated! You can watch your musubi and handrolls being made fresh to order. The rice is warm and perfectly seasoned, using premium Tsuyahime rice from Japan, and the nori is crisp and fragrant. Also, miso soup is super delicious! read more
On my last day out with Dad we just wanted something simple yet satisfying. Gohan was on my radar so we gave it a try. The small restaurant serves lots of different musubi (rice balls). It's a very cute Japanese restaurant with musubi at the entrance if you just want to takeout and go. We ordered a bunch of musubi, soup, and coffee: Shiso hikiki musubi (4/5) perfect seasoning and a good option if you want something simple Hamachi jalapeno (3/5) it was good according to Dad but not amazing Unagi musubi (4/5) this was tasty according to my Dad. He inhaled this musubi Yaki musubi (grilled) (4/5) it was perfectly charred and tasty. I liked how crispy it came out and made my Dad nostalgic for small kid time. Pork tonjiru soup (3/5) according to my Dad it was good and full of veggies. It was simple yet perfect to wash down all the yummy rice Iced Vietnamese coffee (3/5) it was good but wasn't exactly a traditional Vietnamese coffee. I'd probably get it again but just not a craveable drink Service was friendly and attentive. It took a bit to place our order because we came when they were busy. But no problem and after that we got good service. Parking is the only challenge. If you spend $25 you get 30 min validated. I bought musubi to go and so I spent nearly $75 (yes, inflation is real!). We did street parking which took time to find on busy King st. Overall I really like Gohan and more importantly my Dad was very happy with lunch. I'll be back! I was so happy to find ochazuke for breakfast! We were able to find ochazuke in Tokyo in the morning hours but not in Northern California. My husband and I ordered the salmon Ikura (extra cost) and crispy rice (extra cost). It was delicious delicious and I want to come back again! Street parking was a bit challenging and we did not attempt the structure parking. The little restaurant is part of an office building and it sells lots of rice balls for take out. We came around 9am on Friday and there were plenty of seating. Service was good. read more
Missing Japan so much, I was craving Japanese breakfast and what a perfect spot to satisfy my cravings! Finally got to try Gohan and it didn't disappoint. Everything about this restaurant, including their voicemail, speaks Japan!!! The gentleman, who I think is the owner, was super friendly and personable. I told him how much I miss it in Japan and that sparked up a conversation. The hand rolls were so bomb, the spicy tuna hits so different! Definitely a must try! I enjoyed the tsukemono so much!!! The ambiance is everything Japan, I love it...so authentic!! The staff is majority from Japan and I love that about any Japanese restaurant. I can't wait to dine in again! Arigato gozaimashita, Gohan! read more
A quick stop over at this hot and new Gohan restaurant. According to Honolulu Magazine, Gohan is considered Honolulu's first craft musubi bar. They offer a variety of musubi, including options like salmon and tuna mayo, as well as shio, mentaiko, saba, konbu, and bonito flake. Daily specials are also offered. Prices vary from reasonable to pricey. See menu pics. I came here near closing time. I wasn't expecting a large inventory of to go musubis. I was correct. : ( Happily, I was informed that I could still order any of the musubis off the menu. Freshly made for you! The musubis that comes with nori (seaweed wrap) is given to you separately! A nice way to keep the nori crispy! Impressive. The place was not too crowded at this hour, however, there was a steady flow of people coming into the restaurant to order takeout. The small restaurant was well lit and tables are nicely spaced out. There is also a sushi bar like area that you may sit at and order your musubi and other food items there. Fast service here even if the musubis are freshly prepared for you! Enjoy and support local restaurants! read more

Freshly made onigiri, or open-face musubi! I got to try their burnt rice onigiri and hmm.. the charring and the crispiness was so delicious, and gave onigiri a different dimension to enjoy. I also got to try their miso soup and dessert before and after the rice, which made the whole meal complete. I sat at the bar for lunch, but there were also tables for 2-4 people in the small restaurant. If you just wanna grab and go, that's also an option. There were different selections right at the entrance. The store itself was clean and modern. I thought the prices were reasonable too. The staff were also friendly and helpful. Worth a stop if you want some onigiri or musubi freshly made to order! read more
As someone trying to minimize her carb intake, you would think I would stay clear of a restaurant called "Rice". No need to as everything thoughtfully created at Gohan! Love that their premium miso soup tonjiru is chock full of goodness. Always order to start. Also enjoy trying their other appetizers, if you can get them, as they do run out. Of course the star of the show are their grilled musubis and handrolls. While I've been told the yaki musubis are delicious (am sure they are as I grew up on them thus creating this still chubby kid; hahah), I can't get enough of the perfectly balanced, full of fresh protein goodness handrolls. Have tried the unagi roll and the spicy hamachi and jalapeño roll and would definitely do repeat on both. It will take restraint but will be back to try other items first before repeating...after always getting the tonjiru and matcha first! Will be back to try their breakfast menu soon. Restaurant is small so be prepared to wait for a table or order to go. Be aware that the nori on handrolls may not be as crisp or delicious on take out so... rush back to the car and eat'um fast! Parking available in the building for a slight fee. Or lots of (sometimes) free street parking on King as well as Young streets read more
Food: 5/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 5/5 I saw this place on IG and I knew I had to try it! Modern, cute, and cozy space. Love the decor. Came here on a Friday afternoon and waited 30 minutes. Honestly, they need to train their employees. The workers here were really working on hawaii time. There was already 3 tables that have been opened for quite some time. It took forever for the workers to bust the tables. Food wise doe... deliciousss! Grilled Unagi Handroll: 5/5 Would totally order again. Nori was high quality and crispy. Rice was cooked to perfection and Unagi was seasoned perfectly. Hamachi Handroll: 4/5 Hamachi needed to be marinated longer in soy sauce. It was good though. Tsukemono: 4/5 Yummy! Special Pork Miso Soup: 4/5 Soup was packed with ingredients, tasted good but I felt like some of the veggies in here were boiled for a while. There was a tiny bit of a tart taste. Mentai Cheese: 3/5 I didn't really like this dish. It tasted very smokey. read more
