A little updated review based on 8/28/24 visit. Great service out front in the classic diner area. Got a HBFFG (hot roast beef fries with gravy) just as I always would when dining here. The sign out front says "Roast Beef, so you know that is the main attraction. Unfortunately, today someone forgot to salt the meat, fries, and gravy. I never had it so bland tasting before in my life, and I've been coming here for nearly 45 years. (Old man confessions). This was a rare occasion where I needed to salt the entire plate and a bunch more on top of the meat. It helped greatly, but the experience left me a little disappointed. Especially because I don't come to Scranton that often and when I do, I don't always get to go to more than one restaurant in a day. I'll be back sometime in the future, but maybe I'll lower my hot beef expectations.

Old School Diner - The image shows the exterior of Glider Diner, a classic American diner with a vintage design. The building has a metallic exterior with red awnings over the entrance and windows. A sign on the roof displays the name 'Glider Diner' with a graphic of a jet airplane. The surrounding area includes small bushes, a sidewalk, and a street in the foreground. The sky is overcast.

Great old school Diner! Eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly. The gravy for the fires is the best!!!!

The breakfast was really good, so good that I can not tell of it was because I was sooo hungry...or it was just good...lol. I loved the price $30.00 full breakfast for 2 people, can't beat that.

Supposed to be "over-easy", but these were hard as a rock.

I haven't been to the Glider Diner in over 30 years and I guess I didn't miss a thing. The waitress seated us and took our order fairly quickly but it took about 49 minutes to receive our breakfast. It was not especially crowded either. Hubby ordered eggs Benedict and he reported that they were very good. They came with an order of home fries. The diner does not serve Hash browns as an alternative so I had the home fries as well with my breakfast. I ordered my eggs over easy, which were cooked solid and somewhat cold. The toast was heavy and wet, and while buttered, the wetness seemed more like steamed wetness. The bacon was cooked perfectly but the home fries were a but mushy. Pancakes came with my breakfast. They were huge but really doughy and cake like. Very heavy. The waitresses were very nice and there were plenty of them bustling around, it seems like the kitchen was off on this day. We barely had time to eat to get to our appt since the food took so long to be prepared.

Inside counter seating - Interior of a classic diner with red vinyl stools lined along a marble counter. A small white trash bin is positioned against the wall, and a window with vertical blinds is visible. In the background, customers are seated at a table in the kitchen area, with a menu board listing specials such as breaded pork chop and turkey burger. The floor has a patterned tile design, and the decor includes tiled walls with a red and beige color scheme.

I stumbled upon the Glider Diner on a cold, gloomy NEPA winter day when I was visiting Scranton and starving. I drove by and immediately swerved into the parking lot because 1) I love vintage diners and 2) I love a THEME. Walking inside was like going through a total time warp. It looks like it hasn't changed...well, ever. Immediately I was sold. The menu was pretty simple, and I ordered a mushroom cheeseburger and gravy/cheese fries to warm myself up from the cold. I swear on my life, that this was one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. Are the buns homemade? Because they taste HOMEMADE. The burger was cooked to absolute perfection. The waitresses were so kind and kept my drinks full, and were an absolute delight to talk to. Now that I'm in AZ, this is definitely one of the places I will surely miss about NEPA.

Hot Roast Beef platter with mashed - A plate containing a hot roast beef with brown gravy, mashed potatoes with gravy, and a knife resting on the plate. The meal is served on a white disposable plate placed on a black and white checkered tablecloth. The setting includes a fork and napkin in the background, indicating a casual dining environment at Glider Diner in Scranton, PA.

True Scranton staple! You can sit out front in the old diner car or there's the spacious dining room in the back. THE FOOD -so many items are amazing here, but the true Glider classic that you must get is the hot roast beef platter. Served with gravy and your choice of potato (if you don't get mashed you're doing it wrong). Ask any Scrantonian and they'll tell you the roast beef is what's up! I'm also a gravy fiend so I get an extra side of gravy just to make sure I've got plenty in every bite. -breakfast is really good here too. Don't forget about their homemade baked goods including huge cinnamon rolls. -another item you need to try are the Glider fries...amazing fries with cheese and gravy. THE BEST way to eat fries ...ketchup who?! Gross. THE SERVICE -generally good service but sometimes can be hit or miss if they're busy. -it's seat yourself THE ATMOSPHERE -more classic, old timey diner feel in the booths or at the stools out front -the dining room is cute too, they decorate it nicely for the holidays and there's cool old pictures on the walls Every time I'm in town I make sure to stop in to the Glider for some amazing food!!

Quick service at lunch time. Always large portions. The turkey burgers are good but maybe a little too spicy for the average person's taste. The waitress was very friendly and helpful.

I do recommend going though as it has a nice big menu for all.

Our waitress and the hostess were very friendly and explained options to me, even confirming one item I accidentally ordered... not realizing it was missing the GF identifier on the menu, so I wouldn't be able to eat it. My meal was the salmon bowl with edamame succotash and it was absolutely delicious. The rest of our group had a caprese chicken panini with sweet potato tots, a burger with bacon and blue cheese with regular tots, and the last had a side salad and tomato soup in a bread bowl. The soup/bread bowl was the only item without rave reviews. It was easy to have a conversation at our table, and there were TVs with college football on so we could enjoy the ending to a few games. Nice place, parking was easy (across the street), and service was fantastic. Will definitely visit again when we are in the area.

There was the option for Rodizio (endless table side meat with the buffet as well) or Boardwalk which is just the buffet. We chose to do the Rodizio all 3 of us. The buffet, was underwhelming. As a positive I will say each item we grabbed from the buffet was absolutely delicious, the correct temperature, and FRESH! They refill their boardwalk bar constantly. The buffet just didn't have many options. There were 2 tables basically side by side. One hot side where there was garlic broccoli, brown sugar carrots, mac and cheese, beans, rice, mash potatoes, and sweet potatoes, shrimp (which my wife adored) etc. In the middle a very amazing yucca stew. Then cold side had regular salad bar options, tomatoes, cheeses, lettuce, dressing, potato salad, pesto pasta, etc. Maybe if we went with the boardwalk option which was $39 something we would have been fully satisfied. However we did pay $70 each for the Rodizio. There were 13 meats, we were there for 2 hours and didn't try all the meats. The meats came pretty slowly with big breaks in between and some cuts of meat went right by us over and over. As well my husband and I requested medium rare, and consistently were offered well done or very well done meat. As well some of the meat was under seasoned in some cases. Some of the meat when it was actually medium rare was absolutely phenomenal, like the lamb with rosemary was all of our favorite. Again to some positives, the owner was very involved, walking around and asking everyone how they were, the entire staff was friendly. The tables were cute with candles in the middle, and the atmosphere was cozy. The place isn't very big so as more people fill in it gets a bit loud and hard to hear your gaucho say what meat they are offering, but they kindly repeated for me over and over despite my terrible hearing. The drinks seem to be amazing, we tried both sangrias white and red, and then got a pitcher we ended up taking most of home (yes they let you!). Which I thought was awesome, and the sangria is to die for! Like I said the meat was slow and inconsistent, but worse was our server, which I will not name because she was a teen and maybe this is her first job, but she consistently walked past us without checking in. Finally we flagged her down to beg for a water refill, and she refilled half the rooms water and stood talking in the kitchen for a bit, before getting us any. Now lastly to dessert. I got the liquor chocolate cake, it was delicious, but in my opinion quite small, though admittedly I'm a fat girl, so I like a good size dessert. My wife also got a dessert, the flan, she also complained it was small. They also only put like 3 strawberries on each which was disappointing because it enhanced the flavor a lot. All in all, it's a fun experience. 10/10 for kindness and vibes. 9/10 for the quality of the buffet. 7/10 for buffet variety 5 or less really, for actual service. Our bill was for three rodizios, two desserts, one beer, one glass white sangria, one glass red sangria, and a pitcher of white sangria. Mind you it was a Tuesday and they do sales of almost half price on sangria by the glass and pitcher. Our bill came out to about $308. I don't feel our experience met expectations. When we go out for anniversaries we drop $300 or more without thought and a good tip, (special occasions we go all out). So we considered if we liked this place coming back for our anniversary, but I wouldn't bother. I left a small tip for the lack of service, and would never go back. I still would recommend it to others if they have patience, maybe speak up more than I did about meat preference, and just want the experience. Go and see for yourself, but just keep in mind to be vocal about preferences, and ready to wait.
