We take care of a lot of out of town patients and we eat in the area frequently as well as give suggestions. I'm lucky enough to have been to Thailand twice, and boy I love kao soi! Friends actually send me pictures of kao soi that they're eating and it frustrates me to no end because I want to be there too. I love that combo of curry, noodles, chicken, soup, and pickled onions. Phoenix has some of the best Thai restaurants I've encountered in the U.S., and yet it's been so hard finding a kao soi dish for whatever reason. I went to Glai Baan on a weekday for lunch right when they opened and there were people sitting in their cars waiting to go in. To me, that says everything about what people think about this place. I later come to find out that weekends are always packed, often requiring reservations made earlier in the week. The kao soi itself was as close to being in Thailand as I can ask! The spices hit you hard, so be prepared to sweat a little if you cannot handle heat. But delicious! Lunch is probably easier to get a table and parking from what I've read from other reviews. But great place to eat - definitely recommend! read more

Very disappointed in the hype this place has created. We made a reservation 3-4 weeks ago because we read and heard great things about this Thai restaurant. My wife and I love Thai food A LOT, and we go to many different spots around the valley but we chose to drive 40 minutes to this spot. We regretted making the drive to celebrate a birthday at this spot that we thought would be excellent. My wife can't handle spice so we always do super mild and places are able to still make it tasty. This food was just straight bland. She's also vegetarian and several items are pre made so they can't make it a vegetarian option. I can handle my spice and asked for 4/5 level in my Khao Soi but when I tried mine and then my wife's her soup/curry was spicier than mine. She had a pad kee mao which was mild but bland and then got a fried rice that was mild and bland. They also charged $3 extra for the veggies in a veggie fried rice without mentioning it before. We have had Khao Soi in its place of origin in Chiang Mai and they don't put pickle and sprouts in it- these guys do and it totally changes the taste, especially the pickle. Now we are left craving good Thai food so going to go to a spot here in Gilbert that will fulfill our craving. The service was really good from the moment we got in but the food was just not good at all. They get a 2* because the service was good otherwise it's a 1* for me on just the food itself. The indoor space is dark and red, so keep that in mind if you want to be able to see your food, choose the patio for more light. Oh and the Thai iced tea wasn't even good. Having never been here, I was ready to try EVERYTHING. We ordered a few small plates to share: pork skewers, steamed dumplings, spicy crab papaya salad, and rice cakes. We also ordered tom yum soup, panang curry, green curry, and shrimp pad thai just for good measure. Everything we had ordered was effectively polished off. Easily the best Thai food in the valley! I was especially enamored by the steamed dumplings, the pan-fried rice cakes [I thought these were gonna be like tteokbokki but it's not], and the panang curry. There was some slow-braised magic in that pot of panang curry and if I wasn't in public, I would have licked, no --- ATE the bowl! Advertised as Thai street food, I can see why this place is so popular! It's a cozy eatery with some indoor and outdoor seating. It gets packed fast so come during off-peak hours. So many problems! 1st of all: nonexistent parking. The parking lot has maybe 3 spots (Mini Cooper-sized, of course) in front of a building that has no branding, only a sign by the road (and a hand-written sign on the door warning your car will be towed if you park in the ReWined strip mall). Ok, not a huge deal, could be a great hole in the wall place...but that brings me to my next complaint: the prices. Holy $hitballs, they are PROUD of themselves! Must mean they are fantastic, right? Ehh, taste is good but nothing outstanding. $16+ for pad Thai? I'd expect that from a mainstream restaurant but not this place. So here's the biggest kicker: the portion sizes are INSANELY small!! That small of a portion of pad Thai for $16+??! Practically only 10 noodles?! No thanks. Had such high hopes, but they were dashed when we got home with the goods. So, so disappointed. I've never considered myself a huge fan of Thai food but this places certainly changed my mind. Make sure to make some reservations before you go, and the parking lot is a literal mad house once it picks up but still worth it! We started with the peek gai tod and Kanom jeeb. Danny, the Manager was kind enough to take sympathy on two hungry guys and worked his magic to find a nice table for us. The ambiance was modern with colorful lights and music playing in the background. The patrons were young professionals and 30 somethings. I ordered the eggplant salad, dumplings, Panang curry and a Thai Ice tea. The food was fresh and delicious. I would say the food is a step above the usual Thai restaurants with claims to be more authentic. I would agree. My only complaint was the tea was just average but tasty. I was expecting the usual with the cream on top but their tea seemed like it came from a mix. Other than that, I'll be back to try other dishes. The dumplings are a MUST, but you really can't go wrong trying anything on the menu. We also love the homey and family owned feel of this place. My family and I love Thai cuisine and we have our regular favorites but Glai Baan is now on top of our favorite Thai restaurants. The food is as authentic as it can get, with amazing flavors. The menu is not huge but every item on their menu is delicious! The coconut custard is to die for. To be clear, this place deserves several more stars. There are only a handful of places in Phoenix, if even that many, that I found to be really amazing and memorable - this is one of them. I even went back often enough that a couple of the staff remember me now. Glai Baan is mainly street food-style menu from the Northeastern region of Thailand called Isan (from what it says on their webpage). I have now tried 10 things on the menu and have not been disappointed by any one of them. If you're a first time Glai-baaner or only in the city briefly, I'd personally recommend the Kanom Jeeb (steamed pork dumplings) for an appetizer and the braised beef Panang Curry as an entree. The flavors for every dish I've had so far is on a next level, but these 2 should not be missed. The drinks are equally flavorful, and they're so creative in the ingredients! My favorite so far is the Laab sided which, interestingly enough, has fish sauce (!!!), shallot, and green onion in it. I was hesitant at first but I'm so glad I went for it. There's a sweetness to it that balances everything out. Ambiance: There's a really cute outdoor patio if you prefer to sit outside during the pandemic (which we did). It's not big, so can only host maybe 7-10 tables? I didn't count. But it feels cozy and almost like you're in a different city. The inside is very pretty, especially if you just want to sit at the bar. However I have not sat inside at any place since Covid started so I can't comment fully on it - I've only observed the area while walking through to the patio. Overall, I cannot say enough good things about this place. I wish I could go every other day, but I'll settle for almost weekly :) read more

This place is absolutely worth waiting a week or two to get in. First, I would definitely recommend making a reservation. Yes it does get very busy and it's a little hard to get into but if you plan ahead at least a week or two, you can get in at a decent time. If not, you will have to wait a little bit but it's worth it Appetizers are very well done if it's just two of you, I suggest getting one or two appetizers and sharing them. And then having a main dish or two. Everything is really well-made. Make sure if you're not a spicy person to pay attention to the spiciness on the menu cause it can be a little spicy but those of us that like the spiciness it's definitely worth it those of you that don't don't get it. All food was made very well and the cook even comes out and explains it. She is very proud of this and we absolutely enjoyed it. Everything was very good. I did not get the name of the gentleman at the front, but he was very nice and got us a table right away. I made a reservation. Unfortunately it wasn't on there, but that was not a big deal and I'm not making a big deal of it, he was able to get us a table at 4:30 PM with both The and I enjoyed. He was very nice and we definitely appreciate them accommodating us on this. The atmosphere is wonderful. The restaurant is wonderful. The food is wonderful and this definitely is not a negative but I get it maybe because I'm older, the music was just a little loud. Other than that everything was wonderful. We started out with the dumplings and each shared an entree. I ordered the panang curry and my husband ordered the kapro gai kai dao. Both filled with fantastic flavor and good amount of spice! The drinks are delicious also! It's small so make sure you get there when it opens! Otherwise the food is amazing to go too!
