The owners personally take care of their customers. They have pride in what they do and it has always been very apparent. The service is spectacular. I'm pretty sure they have the same busser that they had 15 years ago. The food is excellent diner style food that is always cooked well. You get your eggs cooked correctly. Everything is always so good. THE PORTIONS! Holy cow. I challenge you to eat a whole order of homemade biscuits and gravy. No but seriously you should order a 1/2 order. I had high hopes for GJs in Eugene, but unfortunately left very disappointed. The restaurant itself is clean, inviting, and decorated with University of Oregon Ducks memorabilia, creating a fun atmosphere. We were greeted promptly by a tall gentleman, who I believe may have been the manager. He welcomed us, let us choose our own table, and took our drink order right away. Unfortunately, that's where the positive experience ended. After waiting about 15 minutes without anyone coming to take our food order, we finally had to ask the busser to find someone to help us. The restaurant wasn't busy, with only about three other occupied tables. During that time, both the manager/host and our waitress were sitting together at a table on the opposite side of the restaurant. I do want to recognize the busser, who was the one employee consistently hard at work throughout our visit. He was attentive, busy clearing tables, and ultimately the person who made sure we received service. Once our waitress came over, she was friendly and took our order, but we never saw her again for the rest of the meal. There were no check-ins, no drink refills, and no effort to see how everything was. The food was beautifully presented, but unfortunately it lacked flavor and was already slightly cold by the time it reached our table. To top it off, when we paid our bill, no one asked how our meal was or whether everything had been satisfactory. It felt like there was no interest in the overall guest experience. I love a good, classic brunch spot and GJ's Family Restaurant did not disappoint. You can tell this is a local favorite, with business cards for fellow local businesses and friendly staff greeting you as you walk in. The menu had a ton of options for both breakfast and lunch, including a good number of vegetarian options. I got the Denver Omelette and it was good! The omelette was absolutely stuffed with peppers, ham, grilled onions, and cheese and it was glorious. The hashbrowns were also good, but pretty standard. Oh, I also appreciated the variety of hot sauces on the table. Having Tapatío, Cholula, and two types of Tabasco was very welcome. My wife got a pancake, eggs, and bacon. The pancake was incredible--one of the thickest, most fluffy pancakes I've ever laid my eyes on and it was so good. Nicely sweet and buttery. The eggs and bacon were as you'd expect but very tasty. It's a lot of food, or really a lot of hashbrowns inside. What it could really use is a sauce option, like an enchilada sauce. It's just a bit on the dry side. We Yelped good breakfast places in the Eugene area and GJ's came across highly rated for the prices and type of good ol' American breakfast places we wanted that morning. The menu is great with lots of choices. There is also a lunch menu on the reverse side. This place was super busy and very popular. They only serve breakfast and lunch and close at 2PM. We got seated pretty quickly and the busser who seated us was hustling and never stopped moving the entire time we were there. He brought waters, coffee, our menus, silverware, etc. very quickly. He deserves a raise! Now, the waitstaff...that's another story. It took a looooooong time to take our orders. We waited like 15 minutes before we could order and even then when the tall male waiter came by, he completely ignored us and took the order of people directly across from us that got seated like 3 minutes ago. We couldn't get his attention as he ran off immediately after taking their orders. Dude, at least look around the tables nearby. You might have seen the table of 3 with our menus on the table directly behind you with each of us trying to politely get your attention. Next a lady waitress ran by and literally passed our table to take the orders of a couple that were seated like 30 seconds ago. WTF? Now this lady we managed to grab right as she ran past us and before she started taking the orders of the new table. We ordered from her. They lose stars for this subpar service that could have easily been avoided if they just looked around. Other than yelling at them, I'm not sure how to get them to notice us. Everything else was great. We loved our food. I had the Chicken Fried Steak with gravy, my dining companions had the crepes with a side of hash browns and the other had the Biscuits and Gravy. The portions were huge and the food delicious. I love the style of hash browns they serve up here. They rival Beth's Cafe in Seattle. The white gravy was sublime. Very tasty. Been coming here for literal years, decade even, breakfast is always good here! It can be a family vibe here or a casual date vibe. Service is always friendly and QUICK, but nothing lacks. Pancakes are huge and tasty, biscuits are huge, portions are literally always big and it's a good value here. Very filling, prices are affordable, nothing crazy. This place is NOT SERVICE DOG friendly !!! They require the dog to be under the table. It's DISGUSTING under the table !! Disabilities don't all show outwardly ! My sister has a 4 lb legit service dog !! The dog shouldn't be allowed to lay in the filth under the table !! We were told that the dog needed to be under the table and not be fed. So she placed the dog on her lap and even placed a shirt over her dog so it wasn't touching any restaurant surface !! That wasn't good enough. We left and WILL NOT be RETURNING!!! I came to GJ's on a Saturday morning around 11:30. My friend and I were able to be seated right away. Immediately upon arrival we were offered coffee and our server came around frequently to ask if we wanted refills. The food came out pretty quickly. Portions are humungous. Everything was very reasonable priced. The chocolate chip pancake was a must. It was delicious. So fluffy and loads of chocolate chips. I also really enjoyed the croissant sandwich. I'm just here to say that I LOOOOOVE GJ's. Best in town. Homestyle everything. I eat breakfast here at least 2-3 times a month. I do my birthdays and family birthdays here. I absolutely love GJ's. I love the owners and the environment they have created. The diversity they've hired and how they have kept the same people there forever. I've gone here since I was a little girl and the food is always amazing. And don't get me wrong. Most places it's MOSTLY about food but they got the food part down here. It's ALL good. My fave French toast and chicken fried steak - but on top of all of that. I love that a husband and wife run it and employ people that stay there and they all give great service. I am a big eater I am 6'1 260 lb. And I tend to get up to high intensity activities for that I expressly love their jumbo burrito but the casual atmosphere and their consistent service there I have left me feeling consistently welcomed and able to just sit with a peaceful breakfast enjoy experience of my meal and then go about my day. There may have been times I questioned my food within reason. But at this point I feel known and my food is taken care of so I love this little place.
