They had performers and it was girls night so that was unexpected but fun! Went to Gitano for brunch and had one of the worst service experiences I've had in a long time. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty, we could barely get a server's attention. Items we ordered never arrived, and no one followed up. My sister has a food allergy, which we clearly communicated multiple times. We specifically asked for her food to be brought directly to her to avoid cross-contamination. They ignored this, and later claimed the kitchen was closing and "got confused." Inexcusable. It gets worse: a server spilled food and drinks all over my sister and her friend--no apology, no acknowledgment. Only when I asked for a manager did one show up, and he claimed he "was going to come over after," as if that made it okay. To top it off, they added a 20% automatic large party gratuity--despite our actual reservation not being for a large party. We happened to run into some friends and sat together, but we were never told this would trigger a fee. Given the awful service, the automatic gratuity felt like a way to justify not trying. My party & I waited about 20mins for the waiter to come (only because we asked a busboy if he or she was coming). Then our entrees took about the same amount of time. We had a 730 reservation & did not start eating our entrees until about 9ish. Portions for the appetizers were really small for a big party (I mean 4 pieces of bread for 5+ like cmon) Entrees were expensive for just one item & no side. Gitano! Wow! I am a newbie and I don't really understand why? Nonetheless my first visit was awesome! We went for an early bite and an after work drink. From the moment I stepped in it took me back to my industry days. The huge disco ball in the center of the restaurant immediately gave me a happy vibe. It was pretty early in the day, so I can't speak to the late night hoorah. But the music playing over head had me bopping and singing. We tried the guacamole which was amazing! And the lobster tostada also amazing. The bartenders were so friendly. Shout out to Rob and Quentin? We insisted they were mixologist with the tasty drinks they made! In any case if you're looking for a cool spot by the water in NYC, which will transport you to their originator in Tulum euphoria, this is it! Made reservations here a long time ago for my daughter's 18th birthday. My husband told us jeans were not allowed so we made the kids pack an outfit for this night. Much to my surprise there were people in cut off jean shorts and much more casual clothing than what I expected. When we arrived we were seated quickly at a great table. The music and vibe were spot on. Our server Pedro was attentive and pleasant. I had the chicken, my husband had the lamb, the girls had the carne asada and her friend had the duck. We also ordered the guac and queso appetizers. The guac appetizer came out with 4 chips. For the money I expected more chips. My husband asked for more and they brought a small bowl with a handful of chips for an additional $5. None of the dishes come with sides. The chicken did not have much flavor but was cooked perfectly. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meals. At one point, someone passing by dropped some sort of sauce that ended up all over the back of my daughter's friend's dress. They quickly refilled the waters, which was great. However, they also took the plates away before we were completely finished. The churro and ice cream desserts were very good but the churro only brought 4 churros. I just feel like when you are spending $500 on a meal the portions should reflect it. They did comp the churros for her birthday so that was a pleasant surprise. Starters: whipped cotija, quite good but strangely spiced aftertaste guacamole, this I would recommend except it came with just 4 chips Gitano salad with chicken- the dressing was good on this but the server also cleared it without asking when 80% of the bowl was still full; they replaced it Con queso was good with a very long cheesy pull. Bad: We all put in our entree orders in days in advance but our food arrived at wildly different times. I felt bad for one colleague who was left without her carne asada while her colleagues to the left and right of her were served theirs 15 minutes earlier I ordered the arctic char but what I received was salmon. There was no mention of this sub and I didn't question it because I was the last person at the table to receive my food. The salmon was good and while pricey, a good portion size for me. The colleague that was served her steak last offered me some of her food because she was never going to eat it all. I ate one slice of steak and it was super salty. This is what I ended up throwing up. I enjoyed my mule drinks, others got spicy margs or similar with chili peppers. The restaurant is super dark and spacious and unless someone else is paying AND you have to be in this neighborhood there is no reason to dine here. read more

So my boyfriend made a reservation and messaged them after making a reservation letting them know we were getting engaged before we went there. So they knew it was a special night. We were put at a table literally delt outside of the restaurant and like we were solo on the pier sitting next to each other because no other options stuck watching all these "content creators" take photos. We had a waiter come over take our drink orders, he left and then a waitress came over to take our drink orders - we told her that we put it orders already she was confused and found the guy and in front of us asked what he was doing and he said a manager told him to help and she told him no and to leave she had it. SHE NEEDED THE HELP. We were there 1.5 hours never got a water refill. We saw her when we ordered, then when she wanted a tip meanwhile it was every other person aside from her that deserved a tip. The only good thing about my experience here was that we had an amazing waiter Stephen who was super attentive. I can't say much for the food, my plate never came out. I never made it inside the restaurant and was appalled about the service I received over the phone. I called to make a reservation for a family celebration. A woman answered the phone when I called on the evening of July 30th who was completely rude when trying to assist me. I have three older children (high school age) and when she asked if I had children in the party she immediately stated "we don't allow children." I barely got out the ages of my children when she hung up. When I called back, she put me on hold and then refused to take my call ending with we can't take your call and we don't serve children without allowing me to even speak. I completely understand policies that don't allow young children but mine are high school age and are completely age appropriate to be in nice restaurants. At the minimum have someone that answers the phone that can nicely explain policy to customers. It was for an early dinner reservation around 4pm for 9 people. What a missed opportunity!!! read more

When we expressed our concerns, he mentioned being occupied with a larger party--making it clear that our table was not a priority. Came here to celebrate a birthday with a party of 5. Had some issues with parking and ended up arriving outside of the reservation grace period and we had no issue/wait once we did arrive. You can not reach the restaurant directly by phone if you try to call them and give a heads up, but again we had no issues being seated either way. The staff from the hosts, to the table busser and waiter were so kind and friendly. I ordered a "kisses in the car " cocktail from the menu and a customized lemon drop that was not on the menu with no problem. Two cocktails were enough to feel a vibe. For purposes of full transparency there were some issues/hiccups with the order: we ordered all food and sides at the same time, yet one out of two orders of broccolini came to the table before anything else and was cold to the touch, we sent that back and finished our entire meal before it came back so we just asked to cancel it and for it to be taken off the bill, again no issues there. We ordered one desert to the table for the birthday celebration and received a sparkler but when we got up to dance a second order of the desert came to the table lol. None of this overshadowed the kindness of our server or the flavor of the food. We ordered the steak, broccolini, birria tacos, and the potatoes, everything was flavorful. There was no rush for us to clear our table and leave even when we got up to dance. The dj and dance floor was amazing, everyone was dancing together like longtime friends to pop blends of house sounds and nice lights. The decor will not disappoint from the exterior to the entrance to the dining area to the path to the restrooms. I had a wonderful time and would recommend any celebration here. I was only offered one round of drinks and when my two friends came later, it took over 30 minutes for them to get a drink order in. I barely saw the waiter and saw them just hanging out and even dancing like do your job instead of dancing? When I tell you, NO ONE CAME TO CHECK ON US EVER. No one asked me "how's your night going?" "How was the food?" "How was the $22 cocktail?" Nothing. To top it all off, I put on the reservation that it was my birthday and the staff did nothing for it. They wouldn't allow ordering food outside of the preset package and told us the best option was to go outside the event even after they offered to start a second tab. Things continued to decline when they found out there were cakes present at the birthday event (surprise!) and tried charging $40 per person for a cutting fee...I wonder if there was no cutting fee outside where they told us to go get more food...would not recommend!
