I really enjoyed my food and drinks at Mezcali. We went for brunch and really enjoyed the birria dumplings and the short rib hash was delightful. The only reason for 3 stars is that they advertise bottomless brunch but when we went, the server said they no longer offer it. This was several weeks ago and I am still seeing bottomless advertised which feels like a misrepresentation. Overall good for a quiet casual brunch with good food. read more

Mezcali was excellent, really tasty food and drinks in a spacious, modern setting. Plenty of seating at tables and at the bar, in a cavernous space that still gives a warm, intimate vibe. For drinks, I tried their twist on an old fashioned, where they use a specific candy/syrup popular in Mexico in lieu of the bitters. It tasted fantastic, very smooth while still letting the whiskey come through. For food, their birria dumplings were phenomenal. The bold birria flavors paired well with a chewy dumpling skin, it was a really interesting combo. And I also had their carnitas tacos, which were equally tasty. Unfortunately, this was a really disappointing experience from start to finish. When we first arrived, the hostesses were busy giggling and gossiping with each other and didn't even acknowledge us. There were plenty of empty tables, yet we were seated in an extremely tight space squeezed between two other tables, which made the whole experience uncomfortable. We ordered nachos as an appetizer, and it took an entire hour to come out. The restaurant had maybe 10 customers in the entire place, so there was absolutely no reason for an appetizer to take that long. And when it finally arrived, it was stone cold. We sent it back, and interestingly enough, a new order came out in about 5 minutes. So why did the first order take an hour? By this point, we were understandably frustrated and clearly expressed our disappointment. We would have loved to order more food, but after waiting an hour just for an appetizer, we decided it wasn't worth it. What made the experience even worse was that when the check came, there was no attempt whatsoever to make up for the terrible experience ...not even a small discount or offer to remove the appetizer. We ended up paying over $80 for one drink and nachos after dealing with an hour-long wait and cold food. Mistakes and delays can happen, but the lack of acknowledgment, poor seating, extremely long wait, cold food, and complete lack of effort to make things right made this a very frustrating experience. In my two years of living in NYC, I found it hard to find good Mexican food. And while Mezcali feels more Tex-Mex than traditional Mexican, the flavor is smashing -- I loved it and would go back in a heartbeat! From the drinks (Tropicolada for the win) to the Baja bowl, and especially the Cali-fries, everything was loaded with flavor. The service was prompt, the interior of the restaurant was spacious and clean (also on the darker side, so be aware if you need to bring a light to help see the menu), and the food was great. Stopped by a local bookstore and ended up discovering a new happy hour spot. From 3-6 PM (Mon-Fri) they're serving up yummy quesadillas, gorgeous food presentation, and the star of the show: a strawberry Mezcalita you just have to try. My quesadilla came with green pico de gallo. Not my fave, so I asked the waiter for regular red pico de gallo. He comes back with what he claims is a "fresh batch" of red pico de gallo. It's actually mushy, soggy, and probably from the bottom of the barrel red pico (which is probably why they switched over to green pico initially). Don't insult the intelligence of patrons, do better. I've come here a few times and the food is pretty mid, but the cocktails are excellent. I used to come here every Friday with my family and friends, so I will always have a soft spot for Mezcali. I hadn't been in a while, but ended up going twice this past weekend. It's a fun spot in FiDi with music playing and a lot of seating options. I've been here many times and they are able to accommodate walk-in's 99% of the time. The music and vibe of the place is lively and fun, while still being family friendly. For drinks - their margaritas and mezcalitas are very good. I love the strawberry marg with a sugar rim, but you can't go wrong with any of their options. I don't love the smokiness of mezcal so I always opt for traditional tequila. For appetizers, we regularly get the nachos with chicken for the table. They're loaded with toppings. Also, their salsa trio is a good starter as well. We typically stick to these starters, and maybe an order of tacos. Their mains start getting very pricey, and unfortunately I don't think it's worth the price. I had lunch here with a colleague. The place was close to my office and with ample seating and dine in service, this has definitely more of a restaurant feel as opposed to a takeout and go feel that you see in many of the restaurants in the fidi area (which they also have as an option too). This is a good place to have big dinners or if you just want an ambience that is a more formal than eating at Chipotle. I have tried my fair share of Mexican cuisine but I'm not entirely versed on the influence Mexican cuisine has in California and this restaurant is supposed to be a fusion of that. I'm assuming because of the large Mexican population in California, there were new flavors and recipes developed over there that's unique to Mexican cuisine in other states. I got the Cali fries as an appetizer to share with my colleague. The portions were really big and I very much enjoyed it. It's like having stuffed nachos, but it's with fries instead. For the mains, we got the fish and shrimp tacos. Both were really great quality tacos. Each set comes with three tacos. I would recommend both of them.
