Terrible Customer Service. Tried booking a party for 18 people on a Monday night a couple weeks ago. The young female representative was so cold and unhelpful AND difficult to reach via email and calls. Visited the premise to review and place a deposit but was so turned off from the lack of service that I walked right over to another local business who greeted me with smiles and enthusiasm and had the best experience. The place is beautiful. Location is Pier 17. Very nice area for sightseeing and close to the Brooklyn Bridge. Very strict rules I imagine when they have parties of 8+. We had 8 in our party. Indoor and outdoor seating. Capabilities to have dj's and live music set. Without it it's just a regular restaurant. New York pricing of course. Views are amazing. Ceviche and guacamole were good. The salmon and rice entree had a lovely crust and the sauce was tasty. The crispy potatoes were fine. The chorizo cheesy dip was ok. The birria quesadilla with lamb really were a snack. 3 mini tacos good for toddlers. My table sampled a lot, from the steak to the mushrooms, to the sea bass (which my friend didn't finish). We went to the bar and there was 4 bartenders behind the bar. A tall bartender after 10 min at least he gave us the menu wich was the wrong one then he ignored us for an other 10 min, a server later came to help us with the menu while the tall bartender was just chatting with his friend at the bar, my wife literally has to raise her hand so the other bartender came to help us, I guess their friends r the important. The dj played a nice selection of music for a Friday night and the crowd was mainly young and at least appeared to be professionals. The vibe that our birthday dinner got was that this is a club!......That serves food. The waitress was attentive but the back of house took maybe a hour and a half to prepare the main course. We celebrated my birthday at Gitano NYC with a group of 10, and it was everything I hoped for and more. From the moment we arrived, the service was incredibly attentive, warm, and professional. Every detail was taken care of; they even customized the header of the menus for my group. Our servers made sure we felt celebrated and taken care of the entire night. Because we were a larger group, we did family-style dining, which turned out to be perfect. It gave us the chance to try a bit of everything, and honestly, every single dish was a hit. We started with the guacamole and ceviche, both super fresh and full of flavor. For mains, we shared steak, chicken, and bass, all perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The steak was juicy and flavorful, the chicken was tender with just the right amount of char, and the bass was light and flaky with a gorgeous sauce. And then came dessert...chef's kiss. The cheesecake was creamy and not too sweet, and the churros were warm, crisp, and totally addictive. They disappeared in seconds! The ambiance is unmatched. It was lush, tropical, and feels like an escape right in the middle of NYC. Great new spot! Having been a patron of Gitano's in Tulum, Varick St, and Governor's Island, I was excited for them to move into a more permanent, weather-friendly space while keeping the amazing views. The restaurant is stunning and I love the scale of the high ceilings, with tall bars, giant chandeliers, and a massive disco ball to balance. The service was mostly good. The host stand needs to greet people immediately instead of keeping their heads down for several minutes until they are done with what they're doing. All the service staff had vibrant, fun personalities. We felt very taken care of. Noticed the clearing got a bit too aggressive with the servers having tried to grab 3 different cocktails before I was finished. A simple "May I take that for you" instead of touching the drink goes a long way... which was ironic, because when we got up to dance at the end of the night, they left all of the dishes on our table for over an hour. The music was GREAT. I'm a bit of a music snob having worked in the industry for several years, but the first DJ played some of my favorite house tracks and the second DJ kept the energy going. I love that the area near the DJ booth turned into a dance floor at around 11pm. This is a LATE crowd. The restaurant didn't fill up until about 10pm. The cocktails were great, but you MUST like mezcal, because 8 out of 11 of them contain mezcal. lol And finally... the FOOD! It was fantastic. Every dish was complex and bursting with a symphony of flavors that were perfectly balanced. We had the cotija cheese, ceviche, and lobster was sent compliments of the chef! All were fantastic. I wanted an extravagant night for Halloween so we opted for Gitano's death and opulence dinner and party. We were not disappointed, the dramatic Tulum inspired decor transported us to Mexico, the beautiful views of the Bk bridge brought us back :) the food was plentiful and delicious, outstanding dishes included the ceviche, beet salad, salmon and lemon cheesecake. Not sure if these dishes are on their regular menu but if they are, you couldn't go wrong if you ordered them. The service was wonderful there were a lot of people and I'll admit that our waitress got distracted by larger tables but in order to make it up to us, she gave us two glasses of wine on the house. Went to Gitano for brunch and had one of the worst service experiences I've had in a long time. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty, we could barely get a server's attention. Items we ordered never arrived, and no one followed up. My sister has a food allergy, which we clearly communicated multiple times. We specifically asked for her food to be brought directly to her to avoid cross-contamination. They ignored this, and later claimed the kitchen was closing and "got confused." Inexcusable. It gets worse: a server spilled food and drinks all over my sister and her friend--no apology, no acknowledgment. Only when I asked for a manager did one show up, and he claimed he "was going to come over after," as if that made it okay. To top it off, they added a 20% automatic large party gratuity--despite our actual reservation not being for a large party. We happened to run into some friends and sat together, but we were never told this would trigger a fee. Given the awful service, the automatic gratuity felt like a way to justify not trying. Overall, careless, unprofessional, and not worth the hype. Definitely wouldn't return or recommend. read more

Then our entrees took about the same amount of time. We had a 730 reservation & did not start eating our entrees until about 9ish. Portions for the appetizers were really small for a big party (I mean 4 pieces of bread for 5+ like cmon) Entrees were expensive for just one item & no side. So my boyfriend made a reservation and messaged them after making a reservation letting them know we were getting engaged before we went there. So they knew it was a special night. We were put at a table literally delt outside of the restaurant and like we were solo on the pier sitting next to each other because no other options stuck watching all these "content creators" take photos. We had a waiter come over take our drink orders, he left and then a waitress came over to take our drink orders - we told her that we put it orders already she was confused and found the guy and in front of us asked what he was doing and he said a manager told him to help and she told him no and to leave she had it. SHE NEEDED THE HELP. We were there 1.5 hours never got a water refill. We saw her when we ordered, then when she wanted a tip meanwhile it was every other person aside from her that deserved a tip. From the moment I stepped in it took me back to my industry days. The huge disco ball in the center of the restaurant immediately gave me a happy vibe. It was pretty early in the day, so I can't speak to the late night hoorah. But the music playing over head had me bopping and singing. We tried the guacamole which was amazing! And the lobster tostada also amazing. The bartenders were so friendly. Shout out to Rob and Quentin? We insisted they were mixologist with the tasty drinks they made! In any case if you're looking for a cool spot by the water in NYC, which will transport you to their originator in Tulum euphoria, this is it! We had gotten guacamole and chips that came with 6 chips...however the waiter told us that if we need more she'd get us more. WE NEVER SAW HER TILL SHE BROUGHT US THE BILL. Whatever okay we put our card down and there is NO automatic gratuity applied DOES NOT SHOW ON THE BILL. Our waiter then proceeds to show me her screen to click a tip...WHICH I DO however not 20% because she did not give 20% service. I come to see on my credit card I was charged almost 35% in a tip. Made reservations here a long time ago for my daughter's 18th birthday. My husband told us jeans were not allowed so we made the kids pack an outfit for this night. Much to my surprise there were people in cut off jean shorts and much more casual clothing than what I expected. When we arrived we were seated quickly at a great table. The music and vibe were spot on. Our server Pedro was attentive and pleasant. I had the chicken, my husband had the lamb, the girls had the carne asada and her friend had the duck. We also ordered the guac and queso appetizers. The guac appetizer came out with 4 chips. For the money I expected more chips. My husband asked for more and they brought a small bowl with a handful of chips for an additional $5. None of the dishes come with sides. The chicken did not have much flavor but was cooked perfectly. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meals. At one point, someone passing by dropped some sort of sauce that ended up all over the back of my daughter's friend's dress. They quickly refilled the waters, which was great. However, they also took the plates away before we were completely finished. The churro and ice cream desserts were very good but the churro only brought 4 churros. I just feel like when you are spending $500 on a meal the portions should reflect it. They did comp the churros for her birthday so that was a pleasant surprise. I dined at Gitano for a work dinner and ended up throwing up afterwards. Starters: whipped cotija, quite good but strangely spiced aftertaste guacamole, this I would recommend except it came with just 4 chips Gitano salad with chicken- the dressing was good on this but the server also cleared it without asking when 80% of the bowl was still full; they replaced it Con queso was good with a very long cheesy pull. Bad: We all put in our entree orders in days in advance but our food arrived at wildly different times. I felt bad for one colleague who was left without her carne asada while her colleagues to the left and right of her were served theirs 15 minutes earlier I ordered the arctic char but what I received was salmon. There was no mention of this sub and I didn't question it because I was the last person at the table to receive my food. The salmon was good and while pricey, a good portion size for me. The colleague that was served her steak last offered me some of her food because she was never going to eat it all. I ate one slice of steak and it was super salty. This is what I ended up throwing up. I enjoyed my mule drinks, others got spicy margs or similar with chili peppers. The restaurant is super dark and spacious and unless someone else is paying AND you have to be in this neighborhood there is no reason to dine here. read more
