First time visit and very favorable first impressions! Inside was cozy and has that "olde world Italian American vibe" that reminds me of Chicago neighborhoods. A lot of take out traffic, another good sign. We spotted a few pizzas on the tables. Probably too many topping for my taste, we'll check it soon. The wait was not too long, and we slid into a booth near the hostess station. Our food did not disappoint! We started with house salads, and moved on to the mains. I added chicken to the Fettucine, and it was a generous portion. The white sauce was bit rich for me, and I wisely stopped halfway and got a box. There was garlic bread in a basket, too. Wifey had red sauce and the combo Ravioli and Spaghetti, again too much so we boxed some of that, too. Food arrived promptly, and hot, and service was attentive. The place looks old , but it's clean. Regardless of how the place looks the food is amazing! And the regulars sure know it! We were the first ones their but by the time we left the place was completely full. We ordered a large pizza our waitress told us that it was big so we were expecting it to be a large but it was more like an extra large! We had leftovers for 2 days. We also got the chicken sandwich and it was sooooo good! It came with like marinara sauce that had ground meat in it. Well sadly this was our first visit to this place and unfortunately it will be our last! I feel so guilty cheating on Nonna's but we have passed by this place for so long and wanted to try it. So Sunday night we decided to give it a try. We were greeted and seated right away. Let me start by saying the service was friendly and great. The antipasta starter was good and the dinner salads were good with a tasty blue cheese dressing. Entrees just Meh with a capital M! The baked tortellini my husband ordered tasted like frozen basic cheese tortellini with a crunchy cheese top from being baked under the pizza oven. That was great touch to the dish. He added a meatball to his meal that tasted like it was more filler than meat with Italian bread crumbs but the sauce with the meatball was a bit tastier after adding Parmesan cheese and salt. The sauce on the tortellini dish was different than the sauce the meatball was served in and needed help. Lots and lots of Parmesan cheese and salt were added by us because it tasted like they forgot to salt the pasta water. Now let me tell you about my Carbonara... actually where do I start? Maxwells bar makes a way better Carbonara than this spot! It tasted like a 3 year olds meal with butter noodles and nothing more than that. It had ham, bacon, spaghetti noodles and butter. The menu says it had egg and a touch of Alfredo but the oily melted butter on the bottom of my plate said otherwise. I ordered this because I went off other reviews and one said it was the star of the dinner. Ummm well I beg to differ, that meal was super sad and I feel I need a make up down the street at my old tried and true favorite spot! This is a homey, friendly, and humble restaurant with an excellent red sauce. Very Italian! I've had their eggplant parm (excellent), many pasta dishes (also excellent), and the best manicotti in Portland. I've never tried their pizza and probably won't since there's so much else on the menu. The salads are so-so, soups are delicious. Servers are super friendly and good at their jobs. We were visiting Beaverton and ordered food to go via phone from Giovanni's which was super easy. Food was ready in about 15 minutes. There was plenty of street parking. I was warmly greeted by the super friendly staff. Inside three appeared to be plenty of seating with an old style Italian ristorante vibe. We ordered cheese filled tortellini in meat sauce which was full of super cheesy goodness and paired well with the garden salad and garlic bread. The portion of tortellini was generous and enough for two. We also ordered fettuccine al fredo and spaghetti tossed in butter with Parmesan. Both dishes were solid and kid approved. If we have the pleasure to visit Beaverton again, we'd definitely visit Giovanni's again! read more

I don't take this place as an Italian restaurant if you really really want an Italian place go to Ernesto's !!!!!!! I looked up Giovanni's and the pics of the food looked good and the reviews were good as well. I placed my order for a large pepperoni and large bbq chicken pizza and some garlic bread. I'm Italian (Calabrese) and this is THE BEST sauce I have EVER had at a restaurant. It's a beautiful homemade sauce. The meatballs are the best I've had since my father passed away in '91, it's 2021 now. I'm not counting food I make myself but every home cooked (by others) and restaurant in the last 30 years and there have been many! Ravioli was great! Caesar salad was delicious. We also loved the cannoli, garlic bread and tiramisu! I didn't have the pleasure of dining in but if the food was this good from door dash than I'm sure it would be equally fine dining in. I'm originally from Chicago and have a very discerning palate when it comes to old-style Italian American restaurant food. This place may not look like much but it's outstanding. The red sauce is, obviously, made in house and rich and complex enough to tell me it's a family recipe. I had some of the best meat ravioli I've had anywhere and the lasagna was equally impressive. Their minestrone soup is made from scratch and packed with veggies - it could, easily, be a meal on its own. I can't remember the last time a restaurant included so much food for the money including large pieces of garlic bread. Next time, we'll try the pizza. Edit: We made a return visit this past weekend and this time we ordered a piece of cheesecake and a piece of chocolate cake to go. The cheese cake was a tiny sliver, and consumed in four small bites. The chocolate cake was slightly bigger but also oddly undersized. Needless to say, disappointing and not worth the extra $$. read more

As a long time Patron my days of visiting this restaurant have sadly come to a close. We've come mostly for the pizza which in the past was exceptional. Unfortunately and perhaps due to the never ending increase in supply cost, the quality has turned into processed and weak rather than fresh. Last eve was our last visit, arriving a bit late at 8:20, I asked straight up if we had time to dine in for pizza and the answer by a young Miss was "oh yes we can seat you". Within minutes my spouse and I were the only two people left in the house. We ordered a couple of beers and chatted about how busy and noisy it used to be (good things to be in a restaurant). Pizza came about 20 minutes or so later. After a piece or two we went to order a second round of beers to wash down the meal. The answer was, "we are closed now so by policy we can't serve alcohol". I'm sorry but what-what? It was an empty house. How about letting us in on that cut-off going in? Or how about the obligatory "last call". We drove from the deep west side of Hillsboro to go there specifically and ended up with a mildly burnt, sub par non-fresh pizza, and cut off from beverages in the beginning of dinner. They said it would be another ten minutes. Well, twenty minutes pass and we check on the order... the person at the register says the order was never placed into the system and it would be another 30 minutes. My party of four came in as a walk in on a Saturday night right before a large rush. Having moved from Beaverton to Western New York over 18 years ago, I have romanticized about the Oregon pizza parlors of my youth. Stepping back into Giovanni's, the first thing I said was: THIS IS WHAT A PIZZA PLACE SHOULD SMELL LIKE! We ordered a couple of large pizzas - the Giovanni's special and another with an assortment of veggies. The sauce, the crust, the toppings all were a home run. I had a Peroni beer, and the icing on the cake (pie?) was the friendly service. There was a group event in the back room that reminded me of pizza parlors gone by. The food here is very good! Servers are friendly. Be patient because the food takes awhile to be served. This was our first visit here but it won't be our last. The food was fantastic. The staff is wearing face masks and the parties are being well spaced out through the dining areas. I really appreciated that. Most customers were picking up to go orders so there was only 2 other parties dining in. They must be well known for their pizza because that seemed to be the most picked up item. We'll be trying that soon! This visit we order the Chicken Giovanni with a side of spaghetti and a combo of spaghetti and cheese ravioli. My cheese ravioli and spaghetti was very good but as soon as I tried a bite of the chicken I wished I had ordered that too. Perfectly cooked, nicely breaded and covered in a yummy sauce. Must try! All the pasta was cooked nicely and the sauces were very good. The garlic bread that comes with the entrees is crispy and yummy too! Everything was served hot and nicely plated. It does take awhile to get your food served so be patient but it's well worth it. We'll be back soon for pizza and to try a few more items on the menu. read more

If you want a real Italian experience go to Giovanni's. This is a small place decorated in Italian style. I had the pesto linguine that was enough for 2 meals. Service was great. Never trust an Oregon medigan Yelper's review of Italian American food. They grew up in a place that puts ranch dressing on pizza, doesn't know what Stromboli or calzone are and refers to any Italian restaurant that isn't some Midwest Siebel student's vision of what they'd serve at an Under the Tuscan Sun/Eat Pray Love double feature as "red sauce Italian." My cousin out here considers that a slur, and I frankly don't blame him. Calling it "General Tso Chinese" or "Tikka Masala Indian" doesn't make the higher-end version any more "authentic"--if you want authenticity, take a flight to Naples and have someone's grandmother cook for you--it just makes you an asshole. Giovanni's is perhaps the one place West of Cara Amico that understands this. Open longer than I've been alive, Giovanni's learned that repetition and quality breed respect. Families come here because they know the cannelloni/manicotti combo is going to get the same baked-in-plate treatment every time. They know that the chicken parm/lasagna plate is going to be enough for an extra lunch and dinner. They know the eggplant will be breaded with bread crumbs and not panko, and that the Chianti will be from Italy and not some local vineyard's restaurant-grade red blend. They know that the cannoli need to be large and use actual mascarpone, and that the tiramisu simply needs to fill the pan. They'll seat either the whole family or just you, they'll do a brisk takeout service or a leisurely early dinner, and even amid the pandemic, they'll hire enough help to make it feel as if they're employing the entire neighborhood. I can see where their pizza would've been incredible about five or 10 years ago, when Schmizza and Pietro's were your other choices, but the Portland places (including Sizzle Pie just up the street) haven't done it any favors by comparison. That said, Beavertonians did a ton of pizza pickup the last time I was here on a Saturday, so maybe it just has to be better than Papa Murphy's. I sincerely wish my family out here and I could just all get back together in Jersey, sit around my grandmother's table and enjoy the homemade versions of most of the items on this menu. Nothing here is the best I've ever had--and Grassa now has Portland's Carbonara market cornered--but that's hardly the point of a place like Giovanni's. It exists as a consistent, baseline staple: It's your place around the corner. It's where you have after school dinners, birthdays, pre-college meals with your parents, mini reunions... or just a predictable night out. With Decarli decamping to strip-mall country and Burger Stevens Italiano taking its sweet time getting here, Giovanni's once again has the neighborhood Italian food market to itself. That will change, but Giovanni's simple appeal and welcome consistency won't. Salud chindon. read more

First 5 Stars isn't enough. Second its not just a pizza place but a fine Italian restaurant. Had the pleasure yesterday to have lunch there yesterday with a couple of former co-workers from Meals on Wheels. The food was delicious, we all had something different and wished that we had what someone else had gotten. This little place is a treasure. Its a little difficult to find and parking is in the back and sort of limited at peak times, but worth it. We have scheduled our next lunch right back there next month.
