Chicken Banh Mi Sandwich and Taro Fries

I hadn't been to Gingergrass in a while because my son and I like Indochine which is also nearby. I suggested we try them again because he really likes chicken banh mi and he can make a comparison. Today we went for lunch, which was a Sunday, so not crowded yet, highly preferable personally speaking. Our server was super nice and attentive, I'm sorry I didn't get her name, she is the Japanese lady. I even forgot my keys and she went out of her way to return them to me! In the years prior, there wasn't a bar, there was seating. I imagine it's very bustling for dinner. So, son had the chicken banh mi with taro fries (they looked more like sweet potato fries to me, plus they didn't seem freshly fried, very cooled off and chewy and the seasoning, probably curry or turmeric powder, will stain your fingers) and I had the chicken Imperial roll bun cha gio, my go-to Vietnamese dish to try. We really liked the chilled water in wine bottles served with steel cups, the steel forks and chopsticks. I also liked the tasteful paper napkins, I hadn't seen those before. The food was mostly fine. I really like their egg rolls. Portions were just right, flavors good. Son said he prefers the cuts of chicken at Indochine better, which are long grilled strips, as opposed to pieces of grilled chicken, as it made the sandwich messy. Mine was fine, I prefer a more salty fish sauce taste, but that is a matter of preference. Oh, the other great thing about Gingergrass is their price point. Compared to Indochine, they are lower, a big plus. The reason for not 5 stars goes back to years prior, I don't like the acoustics. It's very loud in there because they don't have any baffling in the ceiling. I also noticed the music definitely caters to the millenial crowd, today it was early 2000s pop, along with letting dogs inside, which I sincerely do not like because dogs have dander. Outside is fine, inside is a no for me.

Had the best lunch experience I wasn't expecting due to the ratings but glad we decided to give it a shot. Enjoyed every single thing we ordered! Perfect flavor and seasoning :)

Our server was great. The staff lovely. Food tasted good and overall great experience. Few issues: I paid extra for brisket. Brisket that comes with Pho in most Vietnamese restaurants is a completely different type of brisket and it's cooked differently. This brisket was basically barbecued brisket that you would slice for a sandwich. It does not belong in Pho. Also, the beef broth was nowhere near being authentic, but the soup was still lovely. I completely understand the neighborhood that we're in and the type of clientele that they are serving, but just attach more flavor in the broth would make it a stand out.

I have ordered twice within the week and I have not been let down!! The other day I was craving a bún bowl and the one with tofu did not disappoint! It was tasty, filling yet light and has the perfect amount of ingredients. I will be ordering this again someday! Last night I ordered the wok fried cauliflower which has the most delightful flavor. It is sweet citrus flavor that is somewhat similar to orange chicken. I also ordered the famous wok tossed noodles with tofu. This is just as tasty as pad Thai but different at the same time. Lots of yummy ingredients that come together well. I also had their ginger beer which was very tasty as well! Overall this place is where it's at! I will be coming back and enjoying more on the menu!

One of my favorite Vietnamese spots to order from on my way home. Pros: -delicious and sizable portions -Friendly staff -real Vietnamese beer (as someone who is Vietnamese having a place that I can quickly and easily get items that are significant to me is important) -order for pick up Cons: -indoor seating is tight, I personally don't like being so close to other people -it's really dark at night (look, i'm not getting any younger and trying to read a menu in the dark is horrible) -the white guy (maybe the owner?) is nice and all but has no problem inserting himself into a conversation. Some people don't mind, but my wife and I already have some introverted tendencies and it just makes us uncomfortable. --on that note we just usually avoid dining in. That way we get our delicious food and can be in the privacy of our own home. -they allowed someone to eat indoors with their dog (that wasn't a service animal) there was plenty of outdoor seating and the dog owners even seemed a little apprehensive about being indoors. Look, I love my dogs and other animals - but in establishments where food is being served in an enclosed area it's gross.

Love Gingergrass and props to some new tasty items. The jackfruit, Vietnamese pizza, skewered mushrooms - all winners. Took our friends from Portland OR here and it was perfect. Sat outside, enjoyed food and beer.

I don't know why this place only has 3.5 stars! I love this restaurant. Their pork chop and chicken salad are my go-tos. I've eaten there a few times and thought service was great!

I've lived in the area for quite some time now and this is the first time I've been here and now I know why...Gingergrass is good, but did not have the authentic Vietnamese flavor that I am used to. Let me put it this way...Would you rather eat in Chinatown, Alhambra or go to Panda Express? OK, maybe that's an extreme, but I think you get the point. There is just so much more options within a 15 minute drive away. I guess we are spoiled a bit in LA when it comes to Vietnamese food; you just need to know where to go. Gingergrass is for those who haven't ventured outside of Silver Lake or don't want to brave the LA traffic, but still want to eat something Vietnamese. The meat in the pho was very tender. The broth wasn't as clear or potent, but had flavor to it. The bread for the Bahn mi was more of a nice, baguette in France and not the normal crusty roll. I will say the banana egg roll dessert was very good. Service 8/10 Bathroom 9/10 Ambiance 8/10 Cleanliness 8/10 (With an open kitchen, it should be spotless, even the floors) Food 8/10 Value 7/10 Will I Return? I'll drive the extra mile or so

The venue had a pleasant ambiance. While the pho was decent, there is room for improvement. The service could use some enhancements.

I usually order the pork chop lunch. The pork is so flavorful, generous proportion of meat. The Napa and papaya salad compliments the meal.

What happened? The chicken pho used to be so good. My kids and I have been coming here for years. The pho was bland and the bowls are now smaller. Totally disappointed.

I don't know why....but I noticed it a few times i got the chicken pho. It was bland. They used to have 2 sizes now it's just the small one.

My group ordered the #3 pho with rare beef the #4 pho with rare and well-cooked beef and a rice dish. We did not expect the rice dish to have such generous portions. The spring rolls and the crunchy spring rolls for appetizers come in sets of 3 and had the freshest of ingredients. Apparently, there is a private parking lot in the back but we did not find it when we were there. Fortunately, we did find street parking. Allot extra time to find parking since this is Chinatown, LA and you'll be fine.

There were allegedly no tables available so we were told to put our names down. We waited about 7-10 mins and were sat. We each ordered the House Pho since it seemed to be the most popular dish, as well as an order of Spring Rolls. The waiter who was attending to us repeated our order which was (2) bowls of House Pho, Spring Rolls, and (2) beverages. When the food came out we only received one of the Pho dishes and one beverage. We asked to follow up on our additional soup and beverage only to the waited to tell us that we had only ordered one soup dish and one drink. We were very confused since he had repeated the order to us before sending it to the kitchen. The soup itself was lukewarm and flavor of the broth wasn't necessarily extraordinary. Similar to what others have written, it lacked flavor and tasted watered down. Pho should be packed with flavor and hot. The quality of meat was okay, but don't think I'll be going back. I wish I had nicer things to say about this place, but everything was disappointing. TLDR; overhyped, lacks flavor, and overpriced.

Each time I've come the waitstaff has been super friendly, and the food amazing. So, when planning a little birthday lunch for my mom's 81st birthday, this was one of the first places I thought of. My mom lives in south LA and we live in the valley, so after picking her up, we wouldn't have to travel far to eat. Although we planned to arrive to the restaurant at 2, traffic was horrible and we arrived at 230pm. After looking for parking, I dropped the fam off at 2:40 so they could sit and look at the menu while I found parking. I get a text from my husband saying they closed at 3 so hurry. This was news to me, as I thought they closed at 5. I found parking and rushed in at 2:48, to see my family outside the restaurant. Perplexed, I went in to ask if we could still eat, as it wasn't yet 3pm. No wait staff came to the front to greet me, so I walked in a bit and asked the waiter if it was okay to eat. The waiter said we close in ten. I said I thought the website said you closed at 5. I must have read it wrong. I understand, but it's not 3 and we came a bit of a distance and it's my mom's 81st birthday. The waiter, whose name is Jack, offered to ask the kitchen if they would still make food. I said yes please would you ask? While Jack was asking, another waiter asked me if I had been helped. I told him yes, that Jack was asking the kitchen if we could still have lunch. This waiter says, we're closing in 10. I'd like to have lunch too. And walks away. Yes, with shade. Jack returns and says it's fine as long as we can order within a few minutes of getting the menu. I say great and we all come in. The 2nd waiter takes our order with the least amount of personality he possibly can, and the whole lunch is slightly awkward and we're not able to truly enjoy ourselves with the feeling of "we better hurry up and eat" lingering. By the time we ordered and received our food (which was delicious as usual) , there were still 4 other groups of customers there, and we actually left the restaurant within a minute or two after the last customers before us. Also, no one came around to ask how our food was and if we needed anything. I'm giving 3 stars because this experience didn't quite sit right with me. Yes, it was near closing, but your doors weren't closed and there was no sign saying last call/order at 2:45 or anything like that. I feel like once the kitchen approved making our lunch, customer service should have been at its peak for paying customers, who gave no attitude and tried to be as polite with the ask as possible. It was not. I still tipped 25%, because Jack (waiter 1) was polite and my 81 old mama who I was celebrating raised me that way, but I'm not sure I'll patronize them again.
