I've never left a SECOND review on the same place before...can anyone recommend another restaurant that has a very similar style Vietnamese "inspired" menu?... this is THE MOST INCONSISTENT restaurant I've ever eaten at. I eat here all the same. Same dishes each time. I felt compelled to write this because I just picked up an order and they said give us 15 minutes and we'll call your name. I waited almost 45 minutes and was about to get in line to ask about my order but the line was too long. I eventually went up and it turns out my order had been sitting for the whole 30 mins...this seems to happen every time because they're only used to online and call in orders and people coming up to ask for the order, DO NOT place a to go order in person. This is how this happens. Food ended up being cold when I got home and drink melted because it had been sitting. NOT ONLY THAT but the portion they gave me tonight was literally HALF of what I get every other time and the pieces off beef were all tiny. I had to take a picture because it was comical and it doesn't do it justice. Also, this dish sometimes has a slightly different sauce in the meat, sometimes it's just oil. Sometimes there's herbs in the sauce, sometimes just onion. Sometimes chilis, sometimes not. Tonight was barely any meat and just onion and 2 chilis. I think this is the last time I'll be eating here until they get their act together. After going to pick the order up and driving home I couldn't be bothered to go back and get a refund. Absolutely avoid this place at all costs. Extremely rude and arrogant server. Came for lunch with a friend and 50% of the tables were empty and since the tables are tiny and I order a lot of food seeing how it wouldn't fit we both decided to sit on a small table. African American waitress came and asked if we mind sitting on one table because she expects it to get "super" busy. I kindly replied I do mind because the food will not fit on a 1ft round table. She rudely replied "well I hope you don't mind me seating random guests at your table then" so we replied never mind that's fine we'll go elsewhere and she didn't care at all. I usually order the pork chop lunch. The pork is so flavorful, generous proportion of meat. The Napa and papaya salad compliments the meal.

I've eaten one of the most tasty pork chops in town here. It's marinade is most delicious and a delight. The table shrimp chips is also a very nice touch. It's a childhood Asian thing. Unfortunately with all goodness Gingergrass has there have been some changes through the years that have turned this restaurant in the wrong direction. Portions have gone thinner and prices higher. The broth in the Phò on some days can be on the watered down side. Location is location, but sometimes the value just isn't there. One thing I do commend them on is there service. There has been some times a signature drink creation turned out to be a dud, but they are open to taking it back. One bit of advice to management, please do some series cleaning along the ceiling and air vents from the HVAC ducts. Gingergrass has great fresh rolls and some of the most cravable pork chops I've ever had. Chicken pho is also really good in a pinch. I live within walking distance so it's super convenient. I like the outdoor seating and heaters, it's perfect to pull up and eat at. I get the crab imperial rolls every time, without a doubt. Fire, I love fish sauce. Pho Tai is also on point, usually what I get. Straight forward here. I had the rib-eye bowl the other day and I was like blown away - gonna eat that way more often!! The banh mi is not bad but I also wouldn't say it's good. I got the tofu banh mi. The main thing I thought was strange was the sourdough ciabatta bread. The ginger limeade was sweet initially and then became very bitter. This is most likely because the drink was not shaken before served. read more

I'm disgusted at the treatment this place gave me last night. I used to come here ALL the time pre-pandemic and finally moved back to the area, only to find this place had MAJORLY gone down hill. I was exhausted and tired from working all day and just needed some good pho. To start: I called at 8:38pm to place an order for pick up and the woman rudely cut me off and said "Um, I don't know how far you live and we close at 9pm sooooooo maybe it's best you don't order." I literally live 5 minutes away and was already in the car heading there when I called, so I told her that and she disappointedly said "OH, okay. What do you want?" I told her a quick order and she hung up. I get there, woman from phone is now counting money from the register, doesn't look up at me, and tells me a total. I swipe my card on what I assume to be the card machine, remove it and move to the side, where my boyfriend then signs the iPAD. We DO NOT leave tip on take out orders ever, and this woman ADDED a $2 tip HERSELF. My boyfriend saw her click the tip thing and was in disbelief, and then told me "I doubt she added one, right?" THEN we get our food at the window and sit outside to eat where there's already another bench full of 2 people and a dog. I barely started to eat (this is 8:45pm now) and two of the guys from inside the restaurant ask us to get up and leave so they can clean and put up the tables. Seriously? If you WANTED TO CLOSE YOUR PLACE AT 8:30pm, then CLOSE at 8:30pm. Don't DRAG customers out of your establishment or try to stop them from ordering. And how dare that rude woman add a tip she didn't deserve on MY card. I now have to call the Better Business Bureau and escalate the absolute disregard and disrespect this place puts out. I used to live up the street from this place years ago. I used to come here have lunch by muscled with my dogs and sit outside. I used to get food to go a lot and today we were in the area and thought of getting some food to go. The menu had changed a little. They had a nice sautéed kale. But they have added some new items and still have some of the old. Today we had the imperial rolls and the traditional shrimp and pork egg rolls. I didn't like the traditional egg rolls that much. We also had the Bo sate and the wok tossed noodles with chicken, which were both very good. The food has always been consistently good here. A hip Vietnamese place in Silverlake with lots of vegetarian options..my boyfriend and I were excited to try it. Having eaten at various vegetarian Vietnamese places, these were the most intricate rolls I've had. There was fresh shiitake, jicama, and more. It left a slightly sweet taste in my mouth. The pho was taking a lot longer than expected so the waitress graciously gave us a second order in apologies for the long wait. I was again delightfully surprised since the rolls were delicious! The pho came and had a nice presentation. For me, the pho was good and had a surprising spicy kick to it. I didn't think it was remarkable but it was good and enjoyable. I like that they use fresh shiitake mushrooms. At this point, I had read many of the negative reviews while waiting for the pho and began to think that maybe it was the luck of those attendees on a busy or understaffed day. They do seem a bit understaffed. However, then my boyfriend picked out part of a shrimp shell out of his bowl of supposedly vegan broth. "Is it vegan," he questioned? With 166 reviews on this place, I don't know why I bother wasting my time, but here it goes: My friend and I got there early, which is key because this place gets packed. My first reaction was that it was a hipster-LA version of a Vietnamese restaurant and the clientele all looked to be in the movie industry or drinking some other kind of cool Koolaid. Still, I liked the clean and light interior, the bamboo-like tables, and the open kitchen with a blackboard above showcasing the specials. The specials all sounded amazing, so we had to order a lot more food than either one of us could feasibly eat. And let me tell you, our table was not big enough to accomodate our appetites. Our ordering resulted in creative plate arrangment! Together we tried the Bo Bia spring rolls, the shrimp-yam fritters, the fried tofu (entree), the Chicken Pho, and the Sweet and Sour Seafood Pho. I also ordered the Vietnamese French Iced Coffee. That was "authentic" enough for me because it came out with the little French Drip device that I love so very much. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious, but my friend complained that her Seafood Pho wasn't seafoody enough and should have had more of a seafood broth. My Chicken Pho, on the other hand, was a little too bland in comparison. While I really enjoyed the freshness of it, and how heathy it made me feel, it seemed like a boring choice next to hers. My favorite part of the meal was the dessert. We tried the Lychee Panne Cotta and the Banana Spring Rolls. Both were amazingly delicious. The Panne Cotta came with chunks of lychee in it and toasted coconut on top. Wow. And the Banana Fritters came with a coconut vanilla dipping sauce that was good enough to drink on its own. Amazing. It was borderline bland. Also the banhmi was pretty amazing but at almost 9 bucks it was on the steeper side. The house coffee, though it was intelligenstia, tasted very very acidic, and not in the good way that coffee connoisseurs like. The server did offer to bring me something else so at least they cared about my well being. Bonus is that they have a real changing table in the bathroom, not the plastic koala ones. Very interesting to see a Vietnamese restaurant nestled in Silverlake as I heard about Gingergrass from a friend. My review is only focused on one dish I had because I had eaten beforehand and was there more to chat with friends. I got the spring roll and it was delicious! It's a simple yet delicious and fresh appetizer! Overall, my take on the menu is that it's pretty comprehensive of what Vietnamese food.
