It was time to take my 2003 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor out of PNO and prepare it for the smog test. I have been going to this location for over thirty years as it is within walking distance to my residence. There has been many changes in ownership during this time. Gilbert Motor Service is a busy place so that is a really good sign. It is also a AAA approved repair location so that is a plus. I met with Darren, the owner, who is very knowledgeable. He explained what is needed prior to getting the smog test. Since the car had been in storage for several years, other repairs were needed to get it running. The final bill was reasonable for the work that was done. The repairs were performed within a few days and I was informed of the progress. The car was even returned with a full tank of gas which I appreciated since that was one less task I would need to do that day. I highly recommend Gilbert Motor Service for all your car care needs. I've taken my truck there several times. The work is good. Last year they rebuilt the head on my truck, replaced the timing chain and water pump, and got the brakes done. I spent around $3500. When I got my truck back the hood was misaligned, the bumper was barely hanging on the frame and black hand prints ran along the driver's side and up and down the driver's door. Recently, I dropped the truck off bc the check engine light had come on. I ended up spending almost $600 on various repairs. As always, the work was great. I had asked them to realign the hood, which they had removed to work on the engine one of the previous times, for the third time to no avail. That fucking hood is still sticking up on the right side! At least I got the black hand prints back all over the driver's door. I knew I would not make it to the shop in time to get my truck before they closed so I paid them over the phone and asked them to lock the keys in the truck. I would use my spare key to retrieve it. When I arrived at the shop the keys were indeed left in the truck which was left unlocked and window down. Let me reiterate, they do good work. The problem is that they drop the ball in all sorts of ways. read more

I gave Gilbert a try by pure luck when my car got a flat tire a year ago or so. It was late Friday, right before closing and also unannounced. Darren was really nice and offered to store my car in garage over the weekend. The following week he got everything sorted with the new tire and kept me updated. Glad to have given them a shot since they've become my go to spot for car work. I like AAA certified shops because they scrutinize the shops and after the repairs are made, they send me a survey to complete to ensure the job was completed to my satisfaction. I visited Gilbert's hoping for help with simple maintenance issues and repairs. I was feeling optimistic due to their strong reviews and AAA partnership. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. From the moment I arrived, I felt dismissed and disrespected. Rather than being met with helpful guidance or professional service, the owner Darren (which I come to find out) was extremely rude and condescending. While the repair work on my car was done well, the customer service was extremely disappointing. When I tried to explain the issues with my car, I was spoken to in a dismissive and condescending tone--as if my input or understanding didn't matter. I'm not sure if this treatment was due to my age, gender, or just the fact that he was having a bad morning, but either way, it was unprofessional and unacceptable. Customer service is just as important as the technical work being done, and in this case, it was severely lacking. I left feeling disrespected and frustrated, even though the issue with my car was resolved. No customer should feel belittled or unwelcome when seeking help, especially in a space that can already feel intimidating to begin with. This place seems to do fairly good work, but their communication skills and "bedside manner" could use some serious improvement. I'm not a mechanic but I don't appreciate being patronized about basic automotive issues. I recently asked whether I could get my car back the same day if they performed a specific service and was answered with a question: "Do you have an appointment." I made an appointment for the next morning and showed up at 8:20 AM, but I still did NOT get my car back the same day. I come here because it's conveniently close to my home, but I never get a "warm and fuzzy" feeling dealing with this business. read more

Did you not have yourself a large cup of coffee in the morning to help you get your thoughts together before you wrote your response to my review?! Well, as to "not discussing it with you", there was nothing to discuss since you VERY CLEARLY, IN NO UNCERTAIN WORDS, said you do not do these types of repairs because it was considered a "heavy repair" involving the removal of the engine/trans components. You even repeated that when I asked you that "you really don't do that because of the effort involved? ". And I also noticed in your response that you DID NOT DISPUTE THAT WHAT I POSTED ON YELP (OF THE DISCUSSION WE HAD) AS BEING INCORRECT! So, no, I'm not ranting on Yelp for the "...for whole world to hear.", I'm letting others know what an UNPLEASANT experience I had with you, and that you were in complete contradiction to what your website states. None of what you wrote in your response makes any sense or explains why you decided to not repair my car. People have a right to know -and would want to know -- about what kinds of experiences customers have with a business before they decide to do business or continue to do business with a merchant. They didn't "refuse" to do the work, they sent me to you because they do not do that type of car repair. UNLIKE you, they - actually Howard - told me upfront that they do not install struts. UNLIKE you, they didn't lead me on to assume they would do the work by quoting me a cost to repair it like you did. Howard was upfront and recommended I go to you. I had been a customer of A & L Transmission for many years BEFORE you did my struts and, after you did the job, I continued with them for many years afterwards until they decided to retire and close the shop. My better half, she had her car serviced by them as well. So, I have NO idea what you mean by stating they refused to do the work. They actually did YOU a favor and a service by recommending you to me, when they did not have to provide any recommendations, even though I was a long-time customer of theirs. I'm sure we'll find another mechanic who knows how to value the business of an 11-year customer who won't have to post a legitimate complaint about their business practices on Yelp (or wherever). My experience with this business is overall satisfactory. The reasons for a 3-star only review are 1) price and charge are significantly higher than what others charge for the similar work, and 2) the interaction with us wasn't genuine and showed little enthusiasm on helping. I think at some point, all, if not, most people would not want to bring their car in for a repair or check up if they had a choice, so I believe a friendly treatment in explaining or price dealing with the customers will probably be appreciated as some people are already in a stressful situation when they need to have their car repaired. So, friendly conversation or treatment is key to customer-facing businesses like this one. read more

For two consecutive years he "fixed" and twice I was charged ridiculous amount and the problem was never resolved. Please ask for a second opinion. Concerned with the rampant catalytic converter thefts, my wife and I took our cars in to have protection installed in both of our cars. My wife got the protective plate and I got the CatClamp. We made appointments about a couple of weeks in advance. On the day of our appointments, we dropped off our cars, went out for a bite to eat, and the cars were ready in about three hours or so.
