Came here to pick up some groceries, because tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, and squash were on sale for $.99/lb! Produce was fresh and pretty good, also picked up some mushrooms and bell pepper which were a bit more on the expensive side. Good selection though and plenty to choose from, huge parking lot as well. The downside of going to Giant Eagle is that during self checkout, it asked for a phone number for whatever membership people have for this grocery store chain. I wasn't a fan of that because I'd have to get one just to go grocery shopping once here, as I don't live here. That was a bit annoying! I should know better. GE is my least favorite grocery. But, sometimes it's handy. Today we needed a couple of things quickly. I had a choice of Kroger or GE, but I don't like Kroger much either and this was closer to home, a factor since we were getting cold stuff. GE annoys me, repeatedly, and today it started as soon as we walked in. No small carts. No baskets, and you don't know this till you are inside- and the doors will not let you back out to the carts. So, go around and get a big cart. Prices are high. Really high. High even for the current situation, high even compared to Kroger. Selection is good, and we found what we needed plus a few snacks. The place is open and clean. Used self-checkout, a mistake. Cramped, with a clerk who disappeared. Two items, the exact same thing, rang up at different prices. I said screw it because we were in a hurry and I had a kid along. No more plastic bags, which I forgot. But they had thin clothish ones on the rack. Free? Flimsy enough I thought maybe, and no price, so I used them. They are 5 cents apiece. Not bad, but they only tell you when you are ringing out. They used to have better perks and coupons. I visit GE, any location, very rarely anymore. High prices, annoyances, crappy experience, no thanks. read more

Pretty affordable groceries/food and clean store. However, I simply must shout out the awesome staff! I lost my ID here once, and the staff were able to find it for me, call me, and put it aside for me to pick up! Returns via their 'Happy Return' partnership are super easy too. Special shout out to Alisa/Elisa who helped me re-wrap a flower bouquet I was purchasing yesterday! They were a gift for my boyfriend, and I didn't want the price tag sticker or residue showing, so she gladly rewrapped them for me with a clear water bag. She absolutely didn't have to because GE doesn't offer wrapping services here, but I'm very grateful she did! Amazing selection of items great produce especially. Very large store -almost cavernous. Well maintained and aisles are wide enough for multiple shoppers to navigate at the same time. Some items are less competitively priced than Krogers, but most savvy shoppers know to shop the sales and coupons. Staff are very polite and helpful. read more

I've been shopping at GE for over 20 years and always had a good experience and enjoyed their perks program. However, recently they won't open a checkout lane. I refuse to try and run over $100 worth of groceries through self checkout. There is usually one employee trying to juggle four self checkout lanes to try and help customers. I give 2 stars because the white man who was working last night catered to my request 3 minutes before closing. The black lady who was at the self checkout was cussing and mad because I came in 3 minutes before closing to get a personal cake which only took me a minute to get. She was extremely rude . She said things like, I don't understand why people effing think that just because we're open they can come in 1 minute before closing. Get the fuck out the damn store so I can go home" In shock I look over at her. But she continues with her nasty behavior as I go to walk past her she says sarcastically happy holiday. The selection of groceries at this store is great, with one caveat--I can't find Benadryl pills without red dye! Also, on more than one occasion, cashiers have made smart-mouthed comments about bagging my own groceries. This wouldn't bother me if I could physically do it myself. I have Parkinson's, and it is very obvious. It's a very ableist attitude for cashiers to have. Just because I'm in my 30s doesn't mean I can't be disabled. read more

I grew up only having Giant Eagle as a grocery provider back in Youngstown, so after moving to Columbus 8 years ago, I tried the whole Kroger thing but quickly made my way back to the big bird. It's your run of the mill grocery store. It doesn't have the shopping immensities or product variance like the Giant Eagle Market Districts offer, but it does still offer a decent shopping experience of wider aisles and OK product offerings. While they, like many grocery stores, rely highly on the automated checkout lines, they do still have a lot of staff on hand and around the store to help when needed. A few dislikes/heads-up's to note that I've experienced while coming here over the last 10 months: -While things are well organized and neat, often times expired or almost expired items are left on the shelves. I'm now in the habit of always checking expiration dates as this has happened to me now 4 times. Their twitter team has been good to quickly clear up the issue and put a credit on my account. -They have stopped carrying a lot of items that I purchase regularly. I get that business dictates a lot of this, but they often then just stop carrying what the food item is at all until they find a new provider. So then I'm going to 2 or more grocery stores to find it. -While the staff is on-hand often for questions, they rarely know the answer. Either they have no idea what the item you're asking about is, or they have no idea where to find it. I went in looking for lard the other day and the workers almost sent me away as if they didn't have it. I knew grocery stores carry it, and it said they had it online, and so I grabbed the manager and he showed me where it was. OVERALL, it's an 'is what it is' grocery store. It's a shame that I find myself having to go to 2-3 different stores sometimes to find items, because normal Giant Eagles and Krogers are so bad about keeping stocked properly, but I just have to deal with it for the sake of their close location to me. read more

Came in here to quickly grab a few things... Poorly laid out meant I was going back and forth to find things (gluten free stuff especially), not a great selection of items, and prices are high. I no longer have my Giant Eagle card, so I went to customer service to get another one. I ended up having to wait nearly 15 minutes to get the card, which they insisted on seeing my ID for. This was the best grocery store in Columbus before it's renovation....now nothing else even comes close. The layout is so much more inviting! The aisles are wider, items are sorted better, and best of all, the microbrew section got a LOT, and I do mean a LOT, bigger. Like, it's as big as the domestic, yellow fizzy section. Giant Eagle offers a fair amount of organic produce - all indicated by green shelving as opposed to the standard black or reddish/brown colors. The deli puts out some good stuff, particularly in the doughnut department. I used to do breakfast here regularly when I lived in Clintonville. Oh! They also have that cool gas station store now too. You can get market district teas in there for one dollar! That's ossim! I stop in here a lot of times while I wait for my bike to receive repairs up the street at Bike Source. I love this place. I will give this store only a three stars because this is just a average grocery store. Yes, they sometimes do have expired stuff on the shelf, just like other stores. Yes, they sometimes do a lot of things looks nasty. However, I do think the manager Doug is someone that make the store outshine the other stores in some point. He is the most unassuming and friendly grocery store manager I have ever seen. He is always rushing to where he can help, even it is something that is not a duty for a manager, like helping package items for self check out. I think he worth a extra star! read more

I used to only shop at this giant eagle when I first moved to Columbus because I didn't know where anything else was and I was afraid to venture out of my comfort zone at the time. So sad. Anyway. This store had a renovation several years ago and they're constantly moving things around (wine dept) I like the way the store is set up, but if you go in to do major shopping after roughly 9pm, you should hold off until the next day if possible because you will end up U-scanning $150 worth of groceries while the employees stand there and look at you and talk to each other while the store is virtually empty. I understand the idea of closing the registers after a certain hour, but if you have someone doing all their major shopping at night (i worked night shift for a long time and lived on this schedule) I would think they would offer to bag the items for you at least, but they don't. They will just stand there and look at you. Whatever. As far as selection goes, they have a lot of things for better prices that kroger doesn't have, but kroger also has a lot of things that giant eagle doesn't have, so it's a double edged sword. I still mostly prefer Kroger, but stop here if I'm in the area. read more

This is my neighborhood store, so I will probably keep shopping here, but it's getting harder and harder to deal with all the negative issues. There are some positives: They did a major remodel a few years ago and that did wonders for the LOOK and the organization of the store. It is laid out very nicely, and makes a lot of sense as you move through it. It isn't as big as most stores, so you can usually get in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Also, the hot food section is awesome. The food is great and the people that work there are REALLY helpful and are more than happy to give you a sample or suggest good pairings for food. Also, there is one blonde male cashier who is awesome. He is always kind and happy and helpful, and it makes me wonder why he isn't the General Manager of this store every time I see him. For these reasons, this review is NOT 1 stars. I won't dwell on the INSANITY of the parking lot, that is CRAZY at the slowest of times. I don't even understand how someone allowed that thing to be designed, and can't believe how more people don't get into fender benders getting into and out of spots. What they need to do is fire 80% of the employees and hire people with common sense, kindness, and decency. I can't tell you how many times I head to the bakery counter and have 2 or 3 women behind it LOOK straight at me, and then continue to do what they were doing. I am NEVER greeted and, more times than not, I walk away without getting what I needed. if you are lucky enough to find someone else in the store to answer a question, more often than not, they don't know where anything is. Then there are the front lane "managers." I don't know why these guys are so mean, but there have been so many times where I am there, with a big load of groceries, my 2 year old going crazy, and them standing at the end of the self-checkout lanes watching me struggle to bag things so they're out of the way for more items. I can't believe how they deliberately ignore issues like this - and it doesn't just happen to me. I have seen this happen to other people, with obvious need for help, and these guys see it, and ignore it - almost as if they are too good to lower themselves to bag groceries. They literally stand at the end of the lanes and watch people struggle. Very uncool. Without a doubt, Giant Eagle is the best campus are grocery store. With a huge selection, prepared foods, fresh produce, and a beautiful alcohol section, there's not much more to want. I always do my grocery shopping here because it has everything I ever need. The only exception was one time I was going to make marshmallows, but Giant Eagle was out of unflavored gluten. This is pretty specific so I doubt anyone else will run into this problem. The store is clean, brightly lit with an organic food section, extensive frozen food section, and a huge selection of magazines. I always find it weird that they have a dedicated area for magazines not tucked away in one of the aisles, but it's convenient and pleasant. To the point where Im starting to think the workers here are setting their watches to my arrival. This is my "regular" grocery store right now, given that it's close to me and has everything I need in one location, more or less. I also dig that it's 24 hours, so I can go whenever the whim hits me. I like that they have a decent produce section, even in the winter, and that it's laid out very intuitively so I don't struggle to find what I want. They also have a pretty decent selection of organic produce, if that's your thing, and a few nods to local stuff, though I prefer Greener Grocer for that. The beer/wine section is fantastic. The deli has everything I need- including low sodium meats and cheeses- and the bakery always has something that makes me want to drool. There is an aisle dedicated to foreign foodstuffs, which is fun even if half of it is generic Italian stuff. There are some gems in there that I've never been able to find at Kroger's. The overall layout of the place is pretty easy to figure out, at least now that they're done with all the construction. The checkout lines are usually decently fast, and I like that they have loads of self-checkout stations, though they still staff people to come intervene when the machine inevitably freaks out on you. My major beef with this place is the parking. It is insane. On weekends and most week nights (especially at the beginning of the week) the place is just exploding, and you have to fight for a parking spot in the back. If you, like me, have a flexible schedule, try to go here during a week day while everyone else is still at work. Then it's not bad as bad, though I've seen it start to get full at noon on a Tuesday. Also, since it's open 24 hours, 3am is always an option too. At least if you're better than me at making smart decisions in the wee hours of the night. read more

When I was a youngish freshman, there was only one grocery store in my world: the Big Bear on High Street. It doesn't exist anymore, but in its stead is a Giant Eagle, and I barely noticed the transition. Giant Eagle isn't the best supermarket chain I've ever borne witness to but neither is it all that bad. I feel fairly confident shopping for fresh meat and produce here, something I can't claim for all of the supermarkets around the area (I'm looking at you, green meat from Kroger). Giant Eagle is big, mostly clean, and well laid-out. (Currently the store is undergoing some renovations which are temporarily making the store seem less clean and less well laid-out, but I'm fairly certain that after the transition the store will be no worse off.) The fuel rewards program here far outshines the Kroger equivalent. On the other hand, it can cost just a little more to shop at Giant Eagle than at Kroger, unless you're really thrifty or aware. All in all this is the premiere supermarket around campus. While it never quite amazes, it always does just well enough. read more

I was at Lucky Dragon for lunch and had to pick up a few items before heading home. So I whipped across the street to Giant Eagle. I was impressed with the parking lot and how they had the gas station so close to the store. It's also very handy for the folks living in the apartments on the other side also. Inside the store is laid out a lot better than my usual GE on Rt 161. The salad bar looked nice and I found the few grocery items that I needed in no time flat. A good experience! read more

This Giant Eagle is leaps and bounds better than the Neil Avenue location. The layout is fantastic and it's easy to find what I'm looking for. The store is clean to boot, and overall just looks nice. The produce also seems better, but I can't judge the consistency because I don't shop here often. The location is also good - mostly because I can get what I need that's organic and/or bulk from the Clintonville Co-op and then drive right town to Giant Eagle for staples that I just don't care about the hippie-ness of. Oh, and Giant Eagle gasoline. I always earn fuelperks and the Neil Ave one doesn't even have a gas station, even though I go there more since it's close to my apartment. read more

After the remodel to the Clintonville Giant Eagle, this is my new favorite chain grocery store! I just went to the Clintonville Giant Eagle for the first time since I left Clintonville last year, and OH, EM, GEE! Gone is the campus-y hell of a grocery store that I left a year ago! The new store is laid out very organically and intuitively; it's just a natural flow. I was super impressed by the produce! They even had some fresh fruits and veggies raised at local Ohio farms! But the biggest win for me was the fact that they had big, beautiful, ripe MANGOES! I usually have to travel to an Asian or Hispanic market to get mangoes that even closely resemble the ones I left in my beloved Philippines. The dairy/cheese section was also fantastic - they have Snowville Creamery milk! Next, the booze. They have a decent wine section, but more importantly, they stock my girly drinks that I love: Strongbow and Framboise! Way to go, Clintonville Giant Eagle! I may even pass up looking at the hot boys at the Brewery District Kroger for you! read more

GE, how I love thee. Open 24/7 for all my late night enjoyments. It's pretty standard for a grocery store, but here is why I specifically love this location: -Size. Isn't too overwhelming like the Market Distric, but still has the essentials (like the cheese selection - brie!) -Location. Perfect for students and Clintonville dwellers, alike. -Gas Perks. I never have to fill up without 20-60cents off. Amazing with these high prices, nowadays. Oh wait, Santorum said he'd get gas down to 2.00 if elected, LOL. -Pharmacy. The automatically refill my monthly needs w/o even needing to call it in! ---- And here's where it falls short: -Parking Lot. Pretty crowded and poorly designed. And an expectant mothers spot? Really? -Fresh/premade foods: Market District/SN Kroger are stellar in this department. I can stop in for a hot cup on soup and be on my way. Can't do that here. Only have a salad and olive bar. In the Columbus area, Giant Eagle is definitely my preferred of the every day grocery shopping establishments. They have a fairly good number of locations, they always have what I'm looking for, and I really dig the fuelperks and foodperks. Also, if I had to pick one grocery with the best bakery and deli, Giant Eagle would definitely win. I like this location because of the GetGo in the same area but I hate the traffic that getting to it sometimes involves. I also love the larger selection of beer and alcohol as well as interesting cheeses and organics. That's probably what makes this my favorite location in Columbus. But, at the end of the day, it's just another grocery store. read more

After years of living close enough to walk to this "super market", and having it be my primary food source, I officially divorce you Giant Eagle. First off, the parking lot is terrifying to to maneuver. I have had so many close calls with people not paying attention to other cars and pedestrians that I feel lucky to not had to call my insurance company with a claim or better yet, an ambulance for a ride to Riverside. The second problem I have specifically with this store, is the college student contingency. They flock here like flies to shit and it seems apparent that the majority of them have never shopped in a grocery store in their life, throwing general courtesy out the window. Perhaps that also explains the parking lot woes? For the most part I find the employees generally unfriendly and not helpful. Sanjive and the older cart retriever gent are the only exceptions. I have had employees refuse to move out of the way, cut in lines, be rude for no reason, and simply not be able to answer questions on the location of items. On to my complaints of food selections. This Giant Eagle is seriously lacking in organic produce, tofu variety, and vegetarian meat alternatives. The seafood department is frightening! When I did eat meat, there were several times that I bought fish that was rancid. Not to mention that the seafood and "cheese department" always seem to reek. And don't get me wrong, I love stinky cheese, but whatever they have going on there is WRONG! Last, the wealth of self check outs when the store is busy is not such a positive thing. After having this technology intstalled for 2 or 3 years now, it seems the majority of people still cannot figure out how they work. It really bogs things down when someone doesn't understand how to swipe their credit card, look up produce w/ the handy pictures provided, or that you need a clerk to check your id if you are purchasing alcohol. I love Giant Eagle, but this store is the worst of all of them, except for Neil Avenue. The staff is always talking with each other when it isn't busy, and usually it is nonsense. Why they allow the staff to smoke in front of the store is beyond me. And then when you walk by the staff in the store, they reek of cigarette smoke. Gross. The other problem with this store is the lack of selection. The ONLY reason I shop at this store is for the fuelperks and the location. The Fuel Perks program is the best of any grocery store chain. $.20 off for every $50 spent in the store. If you are going to coupon, this is a good place. They have a self-checkout where you can do it yourself and there's staff free to help if needed. Note: bring the coupon policy with you before you go. Overall, as a store, it's a great place. The people are friendly and they like having customers. My wife and I have noticed a HUGE improvement with this location! The inside of the store smells better and it's clean. The outside of the store is well kept and free of debris; the flowers they've maintained are always beautiful and lush. I'm really impressed with the progress! Full disclosure: I don't shop this store that often. In fact, I only stop there in combination with some other errand that has taken me to Clintonville or Beechwold. I like Giant Eagle, and in fact prefer the chain to its competitors. They have good selection, and frequently they have items that fit my own shopping as opposed to whatever "mainstream" groceries might be. My complaint, with this store in particular but all Giant Eagle stores in general, is their hideous bicycle parking. I do almost all of my shopping by bicycle, and I would really appreciate it if some grocery chain would install real bike racks - instead of those nasty little thingies that were intended for 1960's elementary schools, when no one was really concerned that some crackhead would steal the transportation. This problem is generic to every Giant Eagle I am familiar with. The Clintonville location, with its campus customer base, has an even higher level of bicycle shopping than usual, and what have they done? They put TWO nasty old ill designed, wheel bending racks in. read more

I'm super disappointed with giant eagle right now. I went in to get red curry paste, milk and vitamins. I got the milk, but the shelf for the red curry paste was empty. This isn't the first tome I've come to the store and they haven't bothered to restock. I go for the vitamins and the specific supplement I needed was on the shelf but expired. Also, if you go to the shelf stable milk alternatives, which I'll buy occasionally, most of those are almost always expired. It just grosses me to think about how many times I probably bought something expired thinking that the store keeps fresh items on the shelf. read more

Okay, yes. The Eag is undergoing some major renovations that are completely obnoxious and it's a challenge on a daily basis to figure out where anything other than frozen foods or Pop Tarts are. They even recently moved the longtime old standby of the far back corner - the eggs (not far away, but moved them nonetheless). There seriously has to be a better way to rehab the G-Eagle... but nonetheless, I will always stand by my trusty neighborhood Temple of Solace. Just the fact that it's open 24/7, and I can walk aimless through all of the aisles at 3am when I can't write anymore papers, only to buy a smart water and a bottle of trucker speed... keeps me coming back for more. I also admit that I am routinely heyyyyyyyyed by more of the male employees than is necessary, and that I the police who stand around the G-iggle at night are completely obnoxious for no reason. However, this does not deter my affection or affinity for the Eag. Overall, Clintonville G-E is a friendly neighborhood place to chat in the frozen foods aisle with friends and neighbors, and to see local punks, metalheads, hippies, and Clintonville's finest mix and mingle as they grab the 10 for 10 yogurts or pork chops. And I mean, nothing is really better than that. Oh, and Kroger is farther away from me personally, and they don't appear to have the same friendly, comfortable affect or clientele. And the money I'd spend in gas, if I had a car, would make up for the pennies difference in price between Kroger and the Eagle. read more

I've been shopping at this Giant Eagle on and off for the past six years. I used to do the majority of my shopping here, but the prices became prohibitive. Don't get me wrong - I'm willing to pay more to receive better service, products, convenience, etc. This GE fails most of those criteria. The good: I like the layout of the store, the aisles are always wide enough to accommodate carts going both ways, good selection of products, good quality products, and a great beer and wine selection. The interior is much nicer since the remodel. Having the gas station right there congests the parking lot, but adds a lot of convenience. Also, the location is excellent. It's very easy to stop there after visiting one of the nearby restaurants. The bad: never enough registers open, the U-scans are very frustrating (par for the course almost anywhere, though), customer service is usually mediocre at best, store needs a better cleaning crew. I don't like walking into a dirty store. What this amounts to is paying too much for what's delivered. I'll still swing by to get an item or two if it's convenient, but I don't go out of my way to go here. read more

I like they keep updating things, everything seems to make sense. Clean inside, people stocking shelves are helpful, but it always seems like they need more cashiers or an additional person at the customer service counter. They do a good job of keeping the parking lot clean of carts but they never seem to shoo away that pan handlers from the bus stop. Back inside they have a great variety of products, I like their deli and bakery offerings, very large frozen food and produce sections. If you like massively overpaying for the same groceries you can get up the street at Kroger (which is unionized to boot)* then this is the store for you. If you don't have a Gian Eagle card and you want to get past that hurdle at the self check out (which us usually all that's open)* I hope you have a boatload of patience and an extra half hour to spare. I went there reluctantly today to buy some marshmallow fluff (the proper stuff from Lynn, MA; not that jet puffed crap from Kraft) to make some fluffernutters (it's a New England thing; you wouldn't understand it)* and left in a fit, actually acting a bit rude like a New Englander should. I only lived in Boston a few years but it sure rubbed off on me. It was the second time I stormed out of there, and certainly the last. It takes a lot of moxie to tolerate this store. I drove up the street and bought Kroger brand marshmallow cream. Attention yuppies! If you really want to needlessly overpay for your groceries go up to Lucky's. I'm a vegan, so, I'll be reviewing from this perspective. The service is completely delightful with the employees going above and beyond expectation with friendliness and assistance. They have a wide variety of organic products, including affordable produce, personal health, and cleaning supplies. The organic options are clearly marked in all cases and shelved in a logical fashion. The vegan meat substitutes section leaves some to be desired, however offers good, if not comprehensive options. But they have an enormous vegetarian meatless substitute section, many different options, several brands to choose from. The vegan dairy substitutes leave something to be desired as well, although that is an extremely specific issue. I've not found any vegan ice cream, nor have I found an adequate cheese substitute. They do have a wealth of milk substitutes, including soy, almond, hemp, and coconut. They are open 24 hours a day and I've been there at all of them at one time or another, and they are always good. The obvious re-shelving process is not intrusive and the atmosphere is always pleasant. The variety of goods is impressive; it is a good place to do all of your necessary shopping. read more

Giant Eagle overprices everything. Every location, I get that. But this location is directly across the street from Luck's Market. Perhaps the best grocery store in Columbus. Also Clintonville Community market is not far away, along with two Asian grocers. So, you've got some options. I live within walking distance. I now know better, but imagine going to get a staple--milk, bread, whatever--and wanting to pay, but being told you cannot because you need to scan your GE card. Yea. You can't actually buy stuff at self-scan if you don't have a card. Oh, but someone will come? That is my biggest issue with this store. They have 40 workers walking around the deli, bakery, food prep area and yet when you want to leave, no one. You can go to the self-scan. have the light blink, and well... wait. wait. wait more. wait. OHHH. That guy is working? He just saw me and is walking away. Okay, I will go chase him down and ask if he can help. Because that is normal or acceptable at this GE. Shop local: Clintonvile Community Market. Need staples? Kroger on North Broadway. Need Produce, good prepared foods, meat, and deli? Lucky's. There is no reason this store should be on your list. read more
