I wasn't too impressed with my experience. the server was flustered because it was busy that night and not providing the best service, they were out of their ossobucco short rib specialty and the beer i wanted. it'd have been nice to be told at first when i was seated that those items from their relatively small menu were 86ed for the night before i finally got a chance to order from my server. I had the swordfish tacos which were okay. the swordfish was smaller sized portion but that was not the issue, the swordfish was good quality but burnt on the outside with the soot and char from the wood fire grill, the soot flavored was overpowering and unpleasant. and the whole dish was on the salty side. the guacamole and pico gallo salsa was good but not worth a trip by itself, you can find as good easily elsewhere. read more

I have been excited to try Ghost Ranch and finally made it last night. My wife and I are huge fans of southwestern flavors and Mexican food but have become increasingly bored with the same old offerings in the southeast valley. That being said, if you are looking for that traditional "chips and salsa with a combo plate experience" you get at 100 other restaurants in the East Valley, Ghost Ranch is probably not your place. They are offering an upscale and creative alternative - and by the large crowds there and good reviews it seems to be working. We arrived about 8:30 on a Saturday night. After a 20 minute wait we were seated by a friendly hostess and greeted quickly by our server. Cocktail menu has a few specialties and my wife really enjoyed her Prickly Pear Frose Rita. We started with the pumpkin soup and absolutely loved it. So much flavor and richness it was almost the highlight of the meal. The crispy masa added little bursts of texture and flavor that was very enjoyable. It was a large serving that was plenty to share. We each got the sampler platter for our main course and felt it was well prepared and tasty. The grilled skirt steak was tender and delicious with a flavorful rub. I almost wished it had another element to it l (sauce or toppings) just to add to the flavor complexity. The enchiladas were good but were crispy and more like flautas. Both the chicken and the pork could have used a bit more sauce and the chicken seemed a bit bland. The chile relleno was just a chile stuffed with cheese. No batter, no sauce, no creativity. Granted it was more of a side, but I think we were expecting something more. I wanted to try the beans with pork and buttered corn rice out of curiosity and probably shouldn't have. For an additional $5 we got a tiny bowl with plain buttered white rice (no corn) and pinto beans (no pork). If you're going to charge extra for something traditionally included, it should be something special. This wasn't. Service overall was good, but not a lot of "extra effort". Empty plates sat on our table that were ignored while servers cleaned the vacant table next to ours. When we asked for boxes to take food home they were dropped off on the table without an offer to assist. Overall everything was good. Some of it was excellent. I think people are willing to spend more for unique spins on traditional food - but keep in mind if you charge more, everything needs to be better. I think Ghost Ranch has the right idea. Hopefully they keep working hard to get it right. read more

We tried the pumpkin soup, it was very good. I ordered a margarita on the rocks. Best one I've had in a long time-not too sweet and not too sour. It was pretty perfect. I ordered chicken chilaquiles. It had good flavor. My husband ordered steak and eggs, also delicious. Everything tasted fresh. Our server, Lauren, was also great! She was quick and attentive. This restaurant is a great addition to the neighborhood. It has an authentic and modern southwestern vibe- food and decor-wise. The menu is limited. We shared the queso fundido- melted cheese w/chorizo- savory and delicious. It comes w/corn tortillas and we asked for some tortilla chips; tortillas worked better. For our meal we ordered the chicken enchiladas; it came with green sauce which was a nice surprise, very flavorful. Ryan, the bartender, was very friendly and attentive. He mixed a very good margarita. I highly recommend this place if you're in the mood for tasty Mexican food in a cozy atmosphere. What can I say. Beyond impressed. As I was looking over the menu I felt I didn't have much food options that were gluten and dairy free. The server was extremely nice and helpful and let me know that they could accommodate almost anything. The sea bass is not gluten or dairy free but they were able to make it that way for me. You don't know how aggravating it can be to want to enjoy going out but can't because of allergies. The bass was amazing!! Full of greens and veggies. Perfect portion. Absolutely loved this place. Went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, were seated right away. The modern desert-south west decor is amazing, very well done. The staff was very attentive and we absolutely received 5 star service. I tried the prickly pear frosé margarita. Not only did I get it right away, it was beautifully served and perfect. It is served blended which I usually hate but this one was on point. The server was amazing...we had the Aztec cake which was new to me but it was delicious. It was fresh and served hot. I came in on a Friday night to meet some girlfriends who recommended Ghost Ranch for dinner and drinks. They didn't take reservations so we waited a good 30 minutes or so to be seated. While waiting, we ordered spicy skinny margaritas from the bar, which were indeed very spicy but good nonetheless. For appetizers, we all shared the chips, salsa and guac as well as the queso fundido. I couldn't stop eating these dishes - the salsa and guac were perfect, and the queso fundido was one of the best I've had, and even included my favorite chorizo from Schreiners. For my main dish, I ordered one of the house specialties - short rib ossobucco. By then, I was already full from the appetizers but it didn't take away from the deliciousness of this dish. The short rib was perfectly braised in chipotle, and the polenta that accompanied it was so good. I took the dish home to my boyfriend who loved it and devoured it within 5 minutes. 4/5 recommend Ghost Ranch for anyone looking for modern southwest cuisine. read more

So now that I've set that table I'll let you know exactly what you'd expect...Ghost Ranch did a great job of beating my expectations. The restaurant isn't huge so there is likely to be a wait but their system of texting us when the table was ready allowed us to head over to the sister property (Tempe Public Market) and relax at the bar until our table was called. We didn't try too much off the menu but what we did impressed. The sampler platter was fantastic. The portion of steak, enchiladas, and rellano were more than enough and they were all excellent. Let's start with the waiter, she was wonderful and polite. Other than it taking almost an hour, from the time of order and being served you could see we started to have a problem. The windows were open and flies coming in, surrounding us and others. When the food did finally arrived it was one meal at a time separated by about five minutes each. Over all, if you want this style of food, I would go to the Blue Adobe in Mesa. Better food at a better price. A weird complaint, but we ordered drinks and shortly after entres. We got the drinks quickly took one sip and our food came. Usually wouldn't complain about food coming out quickly but you kind of want to feel like your food was made for you not prepared and heated up. At least not at this price point. We asked the waitress politely if possibly if they could turn it down the volume. She said no! So we asked to speak to the manager. The manager came over and said no due to the channels are preset and she can and would not change them. Emphatically, she said NO! She would not adjust the music to provide an enjoyable dining experience / customer service. I would not recommend this restaurant due to their lack of service. Miss "I need to step away from the makeup counter" offered me a place at the counter and I countered with I would prefer a table. Well you can have a spot at the family table. I love the modern Latin music and amazing decor, it's South Western, not a "Mexican " restaurant. Arrived after 8 makes for an easy dinner and enjoy the attention and time to better understand all that goes into this exquisite place. Starting with the fundido and super fresh hot corn tortillas. I just don't understand the reviews that have no idea what is involved in fresh food preparation. Every item is made fresh for each plate. The beef is all in 10 day from kill, never frozen. Tonight we had some off menu items, chicken and pork tamales served with mole with a fried egg on top. Home run. Main course is Trout and Sampler plate which split between 3 of us.
