We had a reservation for Geronimo's two years ago when we were in Santa Fe. Unfortunately it was the last night and we were full after a week of eating at some great restaurants. What a mistake it was to cancel then. Fast forward to last week's experience. It is probably in our top three if not higher dining experiences. The service, food, drinks and atmosphere all came together to make this a night to remember for years to come. We went for our wedding anniversary expecting great things. The ambience was nice. Low Light and white linens. Valet parking was good. The details of the restaurant were all very nice. Even the wait staff had cuff links with the letter G on them. Great attention to detail. On top of that the wait staff was excellent and very attentive. Why only a 3 star you ask? As nice as the place was I felt packed in. In each room there was about 3 too many tables. My wife and I were right on top of the couple next to us. I ordered the elk. The food was small in portions and very expensive. $41.00 for an 8oz piece of elk. It was laid nicely on a bed of mashed potatoes however it was served in a bowl which allowed the blood from the elk to leak all over the rest of my food and pool at the bottom of my dish. Needless to say I lost my appetite very soon into the meal. My wife ordered the sea bass which was good but low on flavor. Very tender though. read more

It was just okay. We came at the recommendations of friends, so perhaps they were having an off night. The drinks were okay, the salads were okay... The fried rice cubes with the wasabi Caesar salad were great!! The hen had zero flavoring, the NY strip and glacé was wonderful, but the potatoes, asparagus and beans (??!) were very plain. We had an absolutely wonderful time. We went during restaurant week and made our reservations early. The food is the best in Santa Fe. The service was perfect (I wish I could remember her name I think it was Denika? when we go back we will ask to be seated at her table hopefully the reservationists will be able to figure out who we want) Hostess was warm and friendly as was all the employees. We elected to use valet parking as parking all along Canyon Road is tight. There is free parking up the street. I found out that the valet is an actual employee and not a contract service. My husband and I went there on our wedding night because it was highly recommended to us by friends and the internet. But you know what? It was not just mediocre, it was sort of bad. First off, we had reservations for 8pm, and they didn't seat us until well after 8:30, and there were no apologies whatsoever. This sort of set the tone for the rest of the evening. Second, it was too warm in the place which made it totally uncomfortable. Third, our server was only okay. With prices and a reputation like you have at Geronimo, everything--and I mean EVERYTHING--should be top notch. But our server was totally phoning it in. He barely even acknowledged us and seemed totally robotic. Fourth, the food. I started with a butternut squash soup, and my husband had the beet salad. My soup was exceptional, but my husband's salad was just so-so. He had the elk (which he said was good but not great), and I had the salmon, and it was utterly tasteless. We each had a couple of glasses of wine and some bottled water, and our bill totaled $190. For that kind of money, we should've experienced the meal of a lifetime. But instead, we were disappointed on our wedding night. It appears Geronimo is resting on its laurels. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Hands down best service we have received in santa fe ! Last time I had a server this good I was in New Orleans (before Katrina). From replacing the silverware to serving on the right to deferring to our host, I haven't seen this kinda service in awhile. Our server was comfortable, knowledgeable about wine, and very thoughtful. The hostess was welcoming and cheerful. The backwaiter was generous with bread and unobtrusive. Perfect team! The table ordered a first course and I did not because the entrees seemed huge- they brought me an amuse bouche anyway so it wouldn't be awkward, that's the extra special attention to detail I'm talking about . We had two bottles of wine, prices were kinda steep but they had a nice selection and of course we expect that somewhat anyway. Ambiance was great, it's many small rooms of a house - the only thing that was kinda creepy was all of the very large animal horns mounted on the walls- Entrees- elk, lobster tail, steaks, scallops, many fish dishes- most entrees were $30 - $40 -- they had interesting veg mushroom flight for $60 - not any other veg choices but enough sides and apps to make a decent veg meal anyway. There is definitely some talent in the kitchen and more food to explore here. We will be back - between the great service and the food I can see us bringing some other friends here too. Plan on spending $100/head or more, but it's money well spent. read more

Geronimo used to be our favorite restaurant in Santa Fe. Over the last decade, we have celebrated many special occasions there and recommended it to a long list of friends to do the same. It was always wonderful and memorable. But, that is history if our November 30th dining experience there is any indication. Along with my foodie family who have all been to Geronimo several times, we embarked to celebrate a birthday. It was to be the highlight of our week in Santa Fe. I never found the lump crab in my first course, despite our server saying that he saw it. The dish was mostly penne pasta and bread crumbs. In fact, my first bite was almost all breadcrumbs that were so heavily seasoned I still tasted them at the end of the meal. This little casserole was served extremely hot. It was dry. Two of us sent the dish back, something I almost never do. Yes, they made it right and brought us something else. But the stage was set. The lamb shank was served very well-done. Plating was average. I would have sent this back, too, but I didn't want to make a bigger scene due to the "celebration" we were having. We did not use the occasion to discuss the experience. However, the next night at a different restaurant, the elk was markedly superior to what one of our group experienced at Geronimo when I asked them to do a taste comparison. He also remarked about how UN-remarkable the plating was at Geronimo. When we found ourselves sharing with each other that we could have eaten at such-and-such restaurant two or three times for what we spent at Geronimo and enjoyed far superior food and experience, that said it all! I don't know if they've changed chefs in the last year or if the owners are not as attentive or what has happened. But based upon our experience, SOMETHING has changed and it's not for the better. I don't even want to wear their long-sleeve t-shirt I bought a few years back. I'm sad to say that Geronimo has lost its way. I truly hope that's a temporary thing. read more

I had the elk, and it was very good. Why they have to fly it in from New Zealand when there is an abundance of elk in North America, I do not understand. My girlfriend had the lobster which we both agreed was droned in sauce, and to be frank, a waste of lobster. As a younger person, 24, I do sometimes feel marginalized at nice restaurants. Occasionally a server will pigeonhole me as a poor tipper; I assume because of my age. Our server was fully aware that it was our sixth anniversary but still did not act or treat us in a friendly manner. That would be totally fine if he was not bending over backwards make sure everything was great for the couple in their thirties sitting right next to us. He came by our table half the times he visited theirs and only as an afterthought. I have eaten at many nice places and can tell you that Geronimo is nothing special. The food is pretty good, not amazing, and the service we received was subpar at best. Maybe they just don't like people in their twenties. P.S. The busboy was very nice and quick... I lived next door to Geronimo for a year, so I have a pretty good idea about this place since I visited on many different occasions, seasons and holidays. The food is exquisite. Mouth watering. Beautiful. Elegant. Worth every penny. Ambiance is romantic and relaxing. Very intimate, but great for larger parties as well. Service, well, if you ever have the opportunity to sit in the bar area and have Erin as your bartender, you are in for the greatest experience. She is seriously the best bartender I have ever known and I've been to a few bars in my day! ;-) She remembers your name (everyone's name!), what you drink, eat, etc and actually remembers things about your life. She is professional, intelligent and amazing at what she does. This woman is the best in her industry. The owner, Chris, is one of the nicest guys around. He's hands on and is pleasant and unpretentious. I love Lauren, the valet. He's fun and energetic and a lovely person. I miss living next door to Geronimo, but feel fortunate to have been able to frequent the restaurant as often as I did. Five stars on my list. read more

An older man once asked me out on a date to this place. He had other intentions (and I wasn't looking for a sugar daddy) so I refused. I didn't "discover" this place till sometime last year. As the most expensive restaurant in Santa Fe (and the state of NM), this place is as frou-frou as it gets. Dining at pretentious establishments is usually not my thing, but the food here is thoughtfully prepared and tastes wonderful. The chef is passionate about his food and it shows. Beware, this place attracts a lot of Hollywood types with 10,000 sq.ft. secondary homes in the uppity areas of Santa Fe. If you hear a hush hush, go back to your food. Marginal food. Pretence served up in spades. Yes, the reputation is fine. Geronimo is thought by many to be the at the top of Santa Fe's high stratosphere of upper echelon dining. Having eaten an excellent meal there recently, I had a high opinion of the place. Not any more. About a week ago, my friends and I shared an appalling but pricy debacle. First up, the apps: steamed shrimp & chili purses (ravioli-like pasta). These were heavy, doughy, tasteless and lukewarm. They would have been very much at home in a mall's food court. The crispy French foie gras, apricot and duck spring rolls were overcooked and without any gastronomic excitement. Again, the Asian stall in the mall would have been a good match. Next up were the tantalizingly named main courses. The spicy pan roasted carmel quail was bathed in sickeningly sweet goo that tasted like it came out of a jar from Walmart's "gourmet food" section. The kobe beef dish tasted like, well, beef. Nothing special here including its presentation: boilerplate meat on a plate. The peppery elk tenderloin and apple-wood smoked bacon was likewise, a clod of meat on a plate. It also tasted like, well, beef. Finally, the green miso sea bass dish was unappreciated by the two people at our table who ordered it. As I did not taste it I will not comment. We declined to order desert. The wait staff were pleasant as was everyone who worked at the restaurant. They did however seem to be fairly undirected and absent. In the end, our five person meal including drinks that was priced at over $500 did not match its cost. Not even close. If it were a third the price, it would have earned three stars. read more

Be sure to make a reservation. The Porch is where i would ask to be seated This place is just about as cool as it gets. Atmosphere is a 10 weather you sit on the patio street side or in the bar. People Watching is a 10 -- all kinds of people are walking in and out. Food is a 10.... We had the Tuna Tartar for an appetizer ($19) it is very good what they don't tell you when you order is that it comes with quite a bit of caviar as well. Main course-- Elk Tenderloin -- Amazing! ($31) Lamb Chops -- Amazing! ($34) My recommendation is that you get to the area around 5 PM and stroll the art galleries -- many offer free drinks and food on the weekends. Arrive at the restaurant early enough for a drink in the bar... try to get a seat on the street side porch... After dinner there is a cool little bar just 1/2 a block up the street for one last cocktail or two. This was the finish to my trip to Santa Fe... could not have been better. read more

This place was not at all what I expected. I had anticipated fancified Southwest, Tex Mex-ish kinda fare, maybe with cheesy music on the side. But no, this gorgeous restaurant somehow manages to be modern and understated but retain a historic allure in its architecture and design. Food- and wine-wise, everything was spot on. Our table shared the foie gras spring rolls and a scallop starter -- whatever the scallops were served with was just incredible. For the main course, I enjoyed the elk tenderloin (not at all tough or gamey -- just flavorful), two had the lobster tail and loved it, and the fourth had the pork tenderloin, which I thought was the best dish at the table. There was no sommelier available, so we were left to our own devices for the wine. We did a great job (pats self on back), although I don't remember specifically which Central CA Pinots we ordered. The only quibbles we had were with the service. Like others experienced, we waited an hour past our reservation time to be seated. Once at the table, we waited another half an hour to 40 minutes for our starters to be ordered...and our wine was dropped at the table about 20 minutes after we ordered it. These kinds of delays, in combination with service that was barely lukewarm and not very informative, put a damper on what was otherwise one of the best meals I've enjoyed on the job. read more

I brought a date here on a Tuesday night. The valet was very friendly and opened the door for my date. The host was very helpful, even though we showed up 15 minutes late for our reservation. The waiter Craig was well informed and personable. The back waiter Fitz was a beaming light of enthusiasm and joy. The beef carpaccio was exquisite. My NY steak was perfect! All of this was paired with the perfect wine (with some help from Craig). We were having such a great time we had two desserts and some port wine ( I believe it was a tawny 20yr). Too pretty to eat! This is chef's signature prawn dish. It was amazing. Stacked high with house potato crisps to balance and then topped with greens. A light and spicy Santa Fe glaze sauce covered the prawns plus mole decor on the plate. It was great! Jeannette had the lobster tails similarly served with an amazing presentation. She had her favorite mushroom bisque soup which was to die for! We both shared a social pasta with creamed corn appetizer which was similarly amazing. A red endive salad was very fine too. We have been very fortunate to eat at many, many fine dining restaurants all over the world for work and vacation. We are vegetarian so it can be challenging. Geronimo's was amazing from start to finish and I count it as one of my top 5 dining experiences. The valet was fun, funny and effecient. The hostesses were pleasant, took our coats and seated us promptly. Dinner service was nicely paced and extremely attentive. But the real star of the evening was the AMAZING food. The mushroom soup was to die for - perfect consistency, flavor, texture. The artichoke hearts were cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth, especially with the lemon cream sauce surrounding the luscious risotto. The sourdough bread with rosemary butter was delicious. The hype as the most expensive in Santa Fe may be true but at least the food is good but the service is not. Made reservation a month in advance for my tribe of five. Geronimo confirmed the reservation four times, 2 by email and 2 by phone. My last name is not Revere. Arrived on time, seated immediately. Waited 10 min for menu but we knew what we were ordering thanks to Yelp. Ordered 2 Elk tenderloins, 1 lobster, 1 halibut, and 1 shrimp. All tried and consensus was, best to least: elk and shrimp tied, lobster, and then the halibut finishing a distant last. The comment from the halibut recipient was, "having butter poached fish over linguine in a heavy and rich sauce overwhelmed the dish. The fish and surrounding ingredients were lost in a sea of decadence; and not necessarily in a good way." We got bottled water, and they have a bottle boy filling up all glasses. That encourages all to drink more. Ended with 5 bottles. Must be a contest or commission to push that. Really felt interrupted and intruded on our family gathering. read more

Spectacular food and ambiance. The drink I had had a foam on it that gave it a light, but somehow still creamy experience. Loved it. Very light and delicious. The foie gras dish with pineapple was a very new (to me) combo of flavors. The green miso sea bass with ramen & asian veggies was perfectly prepared. The texture of the veggies was still nicely al dente and a lovely contrast to the buttery soft fish. It's been nearly a week and I'm still thinking about this dish! We sat outside on the porch and thanks to Santa Fe's dry climate, it was very comfortable. I enjoyed the night air and the beautiful surroundings. To cut to the chase, Geronimo represents a new high water mark for me for outstanding dining! First of all, Geronimo is located about a mile away from the rest of the square and downtown Santa Fe. We were extremely impressed with all the cool contemporary (i.e., not a whole bunch of southwestern stuff that will never work with your decor) galleries that line the street as we made our way to Geronimo, and made a resolution to return to those the next day. Once there, it was apparent this is going to be a different level of dining experience. We were greeted promptly, our table was ready, and the mostly white decor is both very cool and yet very appropriate for the region. Our waitstaff was very friendly, very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list, and wanted to make sure our experience was top-notch. Maybe one minor complaint, at times we felt a little smothered by the service, especially with respect to clearing plates quickly, etc. The highlight though was the food. The elk medallion entrée I had was the best I ever had. Also, they have a polenta that a pair with the pork tenderloin it also was the best I've ever had. Also, the wine list is amazing (although most of it is priced well over 2x retail). There are definitely enough places in Santa Fe that you can keep going to different places on multiple trips and not have to repeat anything. However, I will return to Geronimo EVERY time I return to Santa Fe! Although I had several great dining experiences while in Santa Fe over an 5 day span, this was without doubt, the best. If you could somehow give a "5-star PLUS" rating, this is what these guys deserve. By the way, a quick tip... Geronimo is on a one-way street. Right after you pass the restaurant, there will be some private parking available. It is just about the only private parking available on the road. Just really good food, pricey for Santa Fe, but well worth it. My wife did the vegetarian tasting menu and loved it. Only thing she didn't like was the Bleu Cheese "Grilled Cheese" with the salad... not a bleu cheese fan so it came off really strong for the salad. The restaurant was very accommodating with giving her substitutions for the wine & dessert she didn't want. I basically polished off everything I ate. We visted Santa Fe over this past New Years. I have to say, Geronimo was the highlight of our trip. From the moment we walked in, to the moment we had to turn down dessert (i would have had to loosen my pants if I was wearing any), it was AMAZING. We had the best table, in my opinion. In the back room right next to a small personal fireplace. Perfect. The decor is understated but elegant, uniquely Santa Fe. It was unpretensious but you knew it was going to hurt your wallet. The food backed it all up. I had one of the best fish dishes I've ever had in my life. The Green Miso Sea Bass is a must! My boyfriend got the Elk upon recommendation from our waiter. He seemed just as happy as I was. If this were in San Francisco, I'd have a new favorite place. Maybe its a good thing.... read more

Simply put, Geronimo's is one of the finest restaurant experiences we have enjoyed in a number of years. To set the stage, this was our 20th anniversary, and I insisted we step it up to the finest restaurant in Santa Fe. Reservations were made noting that this was our 20th anniversary and requested a special table if they could accommodate us. Upon arrival during a hard rain, we were escorted to a cozy table by the fireplace in the far corner of the room. As soon as we were seated, our waiter approached us with two glasses of champagne and his wishes for a Happy Anniversary. After that, we ordered a bottle of Flowers Pinot Noir (which was fairly priced considering the restaurant). When the wine arrived, our waiter was also careful to bring the correct Pinot Noir glasses. For appetizers, we ordered the Wygu Beef Carpaccio and the Ahi Tuna Tartare, both of which were wonderful, tasty, and delightfully presented with interesting accompaniments. For our main courses, I had the Elk tenderloin with potatoes; my wife ordered the prawns sautéed in Siracha sauce. The elk was melt-in-your-mouth good, cooked a perfect medium rare. The prawns were also cooked to perfection, tender and very spicy. During the course of the meal, we became engaged in a conservation with the couple at the next table -- sort of like eating at a sushi bar. They were very friendly and we chatted, on and off, throughout our meal. They were so nice, after they left, our waiter came by and asked for our dessert order -- they had bought us two desserts of our choice for our anniversary. We were so pleasantly surprised and ordered a pear tart and the Meyer lemon crepe. Now, to further compliment those desserts, we each had a glass of Tyler Fladgate 20 year Tawny port. Even when we were leaving, the people at a couple of the other tables nearby congratulated us on our anniversary. What a great evening and a great restaurant! I want to give Geronimo 5 stars, I really do but after having a cappuccino spilled in my lap with only an apology I deducted a star because that's not at all how a restaurant of this stature should handle something like that. I understand that accidents happen but a) the server should not hide after the incident especially when they weren't the ones to spill the drink b) I firmly believe that we should not have had to pay for the drink. With that said I'll move on to the nicer part of the evening...the food. When we were planning our visit we were torn between two restaurants and I have to admit that the website here grabbed my attention and so we came here. We were seated and I enjoyed our corner booth, it was cozy and the bf and I settled in and picked our meals. Our server seemed put off by the fact that we weren't ordering wine but I just couldn't bring myself to spend $15 on a glass of wine and since the bf had driven us in ordering a bottle was out of the question because I didn't want to drink that much. I overheard our server describing the dish that I was planning on having to another table and she mentioned that the portion was rather large so I decided on a different appetizer than I had originally planned on. I was disappointed that I did that but live and learn right? Appetizers: bf was smart and ordered the Wasabi Sesame Crab Cake served with Truchas Caviar, Chive Egg Salad & Beurre Monte. This was AMAZING. I mean truly truly amazing. He was even nice enough to share with me. The crab cake was essentially all crab with no filler, a little diced red pepper but it was nice and the wasabi part wasn't overwhelming. The egg salad sounds bizarre with it but it rocked. Plus scooping some of it up on the crackers and bread that we were served at the table was delicious. As I mentioned before I swapped my original appetizer idea for the Butter Lettuce Salad with Fresh Tomatoes, Hot House Cucumbers & Caramelized Shallot Mustard Vinaigrette. It was good, the tomatoes were the BEST tomatoes I've had in a very long time but other than that the salad was mediocre. Main Course: I struggled with what to order and when the bf mentioned he was getting the salmon I ordered the sea bass. Man was I THRILLED with mine it was AMAZING. bf: Grilled Marinated Atlantic Salmon with Cheddar Mashed Potatoes, Soy Beans, Sauteed Bok Choy & Peach Pepper Glace de Viande. this was good, nothing that really stood out and the amount of soy beans it sat on was a lot. mine:Green Miso Sea Bass with Black Truffle, Scallions, Udon Noodles, Lobster Miso and Citron Rouille. Holy SH*T this was the best fish I've eaten in a long time. The citron rouille on top was so good and a crisp clean refreshing taste and the lobster miso broth was to die for. needless to say the bf was utterly jealous but I was feeling nice and I shared with him. dessert: we shared dessert because we were both getting full but I really wanted to try this Yuzu Meringue Pie served with Citrus Compote, Lemongrass Ice Cream. It was outstanding. The pie crust was perfectly crisp and buttery and not at all soggy and the pie itself with the meringue had a nice tartness to it but it wasn't so tart that you couldn't enjoy it. We both ordered coffee drinks, bf had an espresso and I had a cappuccino which sadly ended up in my lap and somewhat ruined the evening for me. I don't think that I'd come back here after my experience, I've been to many a high end restaurant and been treated with more respect even when they don't spill a drink in my lap. This is by far some of the best customer service I've ever experienced at a restaurant. Mary Shields, the manager, is an absolute delight and made us feel so welcomed when we told her this was our first time in Santa Fe. The decor and ambience of this place is ideal for a romantic evening with your significant other, or just an intimate chat with a couple friends. Now to the food and drinks, I highly recommend getting the XO Expresso Martini, absolutely delicious and strong on the XO and you will not need more than one. I ordered the Durham Ranch Organic Roasted Chicken with fusilli pasta and Italian fennel sausage and it was exquisite. Just. Get. The Elk Tenderloin. We booked Geronimo in advance for a trip to Santa Fe. I normally prefer ethnic common people food to white tablecloth establishments. Three dollar signs better mean four and a half stars, if not five. Geronimo lived up to expectations. Even in a great food town like Santa Fe. When it came time to part with the menus, my boyfriend was caught in a Sophie's choice dilemma: rack of lamb, which is always the right choice, or the elk tenderloin? The Elk Tenderloin, which deserves to be a proper noun, is Geronimo's signature offering. This dish has survived 20 years and 20 executive chefs. In professional kitchen years, that's 450 years old. I "helped" him order the elk tenderloin. And no, I didn't do it so I could eat half. I'm frequently a game-lover in name only (G.L.I.N.O.; you haven't heard of us). I love the idea of eating wild animals; they're healthier, fun and exotic, and probably aren't contributing to the ruination of the Earth as cattle do. But I don't really walk the game-eater walk. I order bison whenever it's available, and then silently swallow my disappointment when it just doesn't taste as greasy-good as a beef burger. Venison? What lean protein could be cuter than Bambi? It's great until I actually taste it and lose my appetite. When the Elk Tenderloin arrived to the table and my boyfriend took the first bite, for a split second he was in what would accurately be described as the Rapture. In the most serious of tones, he told me I needed to try it. It curled my toes. So tender, it required only a fork to cut. So savory, it was a tiny bit sweet. It. Was. Sublime. I needed to know how this dish was made. I needed to know! When I asked the waiter, he leaned in and in a hushed, reverential tone, explained that the meat was marinated (and therefore tenderized) in Negro Modelo. Beer! Dark beer made this magic happen! Suddenly, I knew what to do with the kangaroo steak I had proudly purchased and subsequently hid in the freezer because I was afraid of it. Marinated and quickly seared in the cast iron skillet so as to preserve rare tenderness, the 'roo was sweet and without even the slightest hint of gaminess. Just incredible. A triumph! Flew in here had dinner and what a great surprise! We are in the bar area which was very nice. I had the Elk Tenderloin and pear Asian salad. Between the six of us we probably had most everything on the menu. Everything was top notch. Even the kids liked every bite. We also had the German chocolate cake and banana cream pie for dessert both were exceptional. Can't wait to come back someday. read more
