I love sushi and this place has exceeded my expectation. I use to come here when they had the all you can eat sushi bar. But they remodeled to a regular restaurant. The decor is clean and pretty. The ambiance is good for dinner with friends or date night. They have full bar as well. The food is fantastic, We always get the flaming scallops and Jalapeno poppers because they are so good. I probably eat at Genghix at least once a month. I like the food! Ghenghix is a Chinese/Japanese fusion restaurant that has quality and decently priced food. Service is noticeably good, there's TVs for sports/events, and there is also a newly added bar. Unfortunately, the last few times I went with my girlfriend, the Lion King roll was very salty (lack of consistency) and it also felt like the other dishes we tried were a tad more on the salty side as well. Brought my aunt here for her 80th birthday lunch last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. First, the staff was amazing, very friendly and attentive. We ordered a combination of shared plates, garlic noodles, lemon chicken and pepper chicken and my aunt ordered the salmon bento box. Everything was delicious, very fresh and for a family of 4 it was roughly $130 with at least 2-3 servings in leftovers. Pretty reasonable in my opinion. Genghix has been my go-to for sushi in the East Bay for years, and I've never left disappointed. Indoor dining has always been a good experience for me because of the great ambiance. The sushi bar and the dim lighting always makes for a great indoor dining dinner experience. They have booths, seating by the sushi bar, and even a separate room reserved for parties or larger gatherings, so it's a great place to bring friends and family. When it comes to the menu, I'm a huge fan of their chef specialty rolls, especially the Zen roll and the Lion King roll -- both packed with flavor and baked to perfection. Their specialty rolls definitely can get expensive, but the portion and quality of them make the price point worth it, and I never get sick of them despite ordering them every time. Another one of my favorites is the crab salad, which I feel like is such a hidden gem! It's essentially lettuce, imitation crab, seaweed, spicy mayo, masago, but it's so good, and I cannot eat at the restaurant without ordering it! Generally speaking, all their dishes are plated beautifully, have great flavor profiles, and are worth every penny. The service has also been amazing, from indoor dining to to-go orders. Nestled on the outskirts of Castro Valleppy sits this cute restaurant called Genghix. This restaurant offers free parking and comfortable seating. I've eaten here several times over the years because my friends really like it. For the area, this is the best sushi restaurant in town. I usually order the bento with salmon teriyaki and pay extra for only salmon sashimi because I'm allergic to escarole, and hate when chefs surprise you with that fish. I was NOT a fan of this place when my nephew celebrated his 12th birthday here. The wait was dreadfully loooooooong and the Chinese food was overall 2.989898 stars to 3.75111 stars. When he invited the fambam to celebrate his 13th birthday here again, I was a little bummed but I was looking forward to try more sushi, which they do exceptionally well. My favorite sushi of the night was the Nigiri Combo. The chef chose nine pieces of deliciously raw fish that was pleasing to the eye. I've never seen such a captivating blue roe before! The whole plate is like a pretty powerful drug, an endless tunnel that swept me up in a whirlwind and I couldn't quite free myself from it. The more I had their special rolls, the more I was convinced that the chef was talented! I had Zen - fried eel, avocado, crab meat and cream cheese. I don't know why I've always been skeptical about cream cheese in sushi, but that was good! I also had the Genghix Roll - fried shrimp, lobster, and avocado. Another winner. I also had to have my favorite Dragon Roll again. Oh man, I'm drooling just thinking about it. Genghix in Castro Valley reminds me a bit like a PF Chang - a large windowless door with a steel ring leads you into the restaurant where two Terra Cotta soldiers stand next to the host. It turns out to be a Chinese place with sushi bar and one of the largest menus I've seen. ~100 different items including Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Lots of HK-style dishes), and Thai-inspired items. Yes they also had Mongolian beef but we didn't try it - next time. Overall, our dinner was a solid 4-stars. Good food and service, only a few minor dings. We would definitely come back - the place is large enough to host family dinners and parties. We ordered the following: Red Lotus Cocktail: Nice lychee-based martini - on the sweeter and fruitier side, but good. Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp: Our favorite app - they grilled the bacon to give it a nice smokey flavor and they used a good-sized shrimp inside. The garlic mayo sauce was also good. Miso Sea Bass App: Incredibly soft and juicy - barely needed any of the miso sipping sauce since it had enough flavor from the glaze. Charbroiled Chicken Wings: Probably our least favorite app - chicken cooked well but a bit on the sweet side. Needed to be spicy with more seasoning. The garlic mayo dip doesn't seem to work here. 9-Piece Nigiri: Fish toppings incredibly fresh, rice loosely packed and soft the way I like it. However, they needed a bit more vinegar seasoning in the rice. Boy Choy with Mushrooms: Nice light veggie dish - you can tell it was prepared by a Cantonese-style chef. Crunchy halves of Bok Choi, and a nice assortment of mushrooms of all shapes and sizes in the center with a small amount of sauce. Genghix Fried Rice: Better than the Boss Fried Rice at 3 Brothers. Has the same egg whites and dried scallops, but was less saltier. Some of the rice clumped together but overall this dish scores high on taste. Excellent food and service. In the heart of this tiny place we call Castro Valley. This is an Asian "fusion" spot, although not really. I ordered one order of the butterfish/ super white tuna nigiri and one order of the uni (eel) nigiri. Nigiri being a slice of raw fish over a ball of rice. Like most Japanese restaurants, one order of nigiri comes with two pieces. Very fresh. SUPER WHITE, my go-to choice even above tekka (plain tuna) clean not fishy and buttery as the name explains. Also the uni, so good with its kinda barbecue-y soyish taste. Best combination together, EVER; buttery, creamy, smoky, and soy-y. I also ordered the sashimi salad. I was intrigued to get the Pokemon salad based on name alone (I was once a Pokemon master in grade school) but, the serving size/plating was that of a martini glass. Inadequate. I'm trying to get my protein fix and hit my macros for the day... bruh! The waitress recommended the former. A tad spicy, but it's essentially an assortment of cubed sashimi over a bed of greens with a vinegarette sauce and some fried wonton crisps. I was satisfied. Try to stay healthy on weekdays. The decor was actually very nice...being it's in Castro Valley. The staffing was alert, awake, and ready to serve us. We liked that. The menu is as thick as a Lisa See novel! They serve everything you can imagine!! Fusion-musion of Chinese, Thai, Korean and Japanese. Since we were there for the sushi, it took us about 2 years to get to that page...it was the last page on the menu. Oh boy, you better have your agenda set up front, otherwise, you'll end up ordering everything. Each page has tantalizing photos that will make you drool. Be warned! Each one of us had a task of choosing a sushi.
