I normally come for ice cream, but I found occasion to order some special high-end butter from France, and having done so decided to go ahead and get some food here as well. In the midst of a polar vortex, I waited for my stuff inside. The pizza was a foccacia style. I got both their basic one and a fancier cheese with burrata and oregano. The oregano had both a strong taste and a strong aftertaste. It took me a couple of goes to finish it and left me feeling a bit bloated, but it was certainly quality. The butter was of a smoothness and pureness befitting the difficulty of acquiring it. This is a high-end place, both in price and in quality. I also picked up some ice cream, as it was not the best day for a scoop on site, but I'm sure I'll want it eventually.

The in-door ambiance was interesting because of the standing. My issue was that the people next to us would bump into us the entire meal because it is close quarters and the countertop was too tall so I had to hold my plate in my hand the entire meal to eat comfortably. We thought the food was good but overpriced. The pizza was more worth it for the price because it is a larger amount of food. The pizza had crispy edges and had a good serving of burrata on top and tasted good. The ice cream was the star of the show specifically the olive oil crumble ice cream. I recommend getting it in a cone because their cones are delicious, sort of a biscoff taste. I would come back just for the ice cream. The staff at the ice cream cart also let us sample every flavor and were very kind. The staff inside the restaurant were a bit rude to us as we were trying to navigate the restaurant.

Wow I've been so excited to try Gemini! There's been a lot of buzz around this restaurant's food, wine, and ice cream. I don't love that there's no seats, it's a bit of a free for all finding a place to dine indoors or outdoors without chairs or tables LOL. But we were able to snag the window sill, grabbed a few glasses of wine, an app, and some pasta. The service was helpful and friendly, and the food came out quickly. The recommendation on drinks was top notch, and the cherry tomato and tzatziki was INCREDIBLE! We shared the ferretti with sweet corn and guanciale and the fileja alla 'nduja with spicy salami ragu & pecorino calabrese. Both were incredible in their own right. I wish me had enough room to try the pizza and ice cream as well. I'll definitely be back in warmer months to sit outside, try the ice cream, and continue to explore this ever changing menu.

This place is weird because there are actually no tables that you can sit at and the line is often so long that it wraps down the block. It's kind of like a Portlandia episode but the food was honestly really good. Highlights of the experience were the eggplant meatballs, which tasted nothing like eggplant and everything like real meatballs, any of the pastas and the cannoli was literally perfect. The service was really friendly and they answered lots of questions about the menu and we didn't feel rushed at all. I'd say it was worth a visit but just wish they had chairs!

I became OBSESSED with happy ice cream when stumbling across their ice cream cart during a neighborhood jog. The rotating daily flavors had me HOOKED & always coming back for more. Easily the best ice cream I've ever had (I still dream of the milk chocolate oatmeal cookie). The caramelized sourdough cones are a nice touch as well. The concept is so unique & cool with a small local neighborhood spot ambiance that I wanted to try their regular Happy Gemini food too! The pizza slice was yummy, the burrata definitely adds that extra touch to it. The cacio e pepe zeppole was something really unique, but more savory than expected.

Gemini in DC was such a great dining experience! The food was absolutely delicious -- the pizza is truly unique, with creative flavor combinations (the white pizza was great!) that make it stand out, and the pasta was fantastic. Super fun flavors all around. The staff was wonderful as well: friendly, attentive, and added to the overall great vibe. The atmosphere itself is fun and lively without feeling overwhelming. Highly recommend ordering a half pizza and splitting a couple of pastas so you can try more of their amazing dishes. Definitely a spot I'd go back to!

Super cute space and concept, excellent and friendly service. We loved the hot chocolate, fries, and iced latte. I want to come back to try the ice cream soon!

I'm obsessed with this place. The pasta and pizza are super high quality and fresh. Loved the orecchiette with pork sausage ragu--it was just the right amount of spicy and a modest portion that let me enjoy the food without feeling stuffed afterwards. For pizza, get a kind with burrata or ricotta on top, they're excellent. The ice cream flavors are interesting and the rotation makes it exciting and special when a flavor that sounds especially good is available. Their hot cocoa is a thick European style that's like drinking melted chocolate. It comes with housemade marshmallows that have a little salty-sweet flavor going on. One of my favorite hot chocolates in DC! It looks like a small cup but it's so rich I don't think it would be wise to have more haha. Hours aren't great (closed Sunday) and standing room only inside. But they're serving special things here so it's worth it to me.

Rhubarb oat vanilla ice cream and coffee crunch
    Liv W.

This ice cream has to be some of the best ice cream in the city. It is so creamy and the flavors are so complex! The rhubarb oat vanilla ice cream was perfectly sweet yet tangy... I am dreaming of it if I'm honest! The coffee was good too, but I think if I came back, I'd love to try more of their fruity based ice cream. Or the olive oil ice cream! This spot is open 4:30 to 8 and the line grows very fast! But we were fortunately first! It is $9 for two scoops which is a bit much, but honestly it is so worth it. I cannot wait to come back and try more of their unconventional flavors.

Gemini x Happy Ice Cream has amazing ice cream, wine and even butter! Only two complaints: no indoor seating and the food is pretty expensive. We loved their pasta, especially the tagliatelle and rigatoni, and I always end the night with their olive oil ice cream. They also sell Bordier butter - nothing beats it! Service is on point. Worth a visit.

The cons - Gelato by the scoop is only from open till 5pm. After 5pm, they do offer their gelato by the pints. It's a small space, but very cozy. It was difficult to get a table to dine in. You can order take out online but I believe that they stop taking care out orders at 5PM Pros - THE BEST PIZZA EVER. The vodka + pep and burrata was amazing. It is to die for. The crust was exceptionally crispy, dough was light and airy and sauce was FLAVOR. Honestly a perfect pie. Hats off to the chef. Customer service was also so friendly and helpful. Please do yourself a favor and try this lovely gem of an establishment.

This might just turn into my top 5 pizza spots in DC! I've had this place on my list for a while, but I thought the hype was around the ice cream, not so much pizza. Unfortunately, they close rather early (8:30pm). We decided to try our luck and make our way there. There was actually a wine event going on so of course we had to try a glass of wine as well. We decided to get - 1/2 red with 'nduja, ricotta, chilies & honey 1/2 plain vodka sauce - 5/5 Can I just say, I've never had a crust like this before in my entire life? The bottom was the perfect amount of crisp and the middle was fluffy, doughy, and squishy. The sauce was a tad bit spicy for my liking, but the bread/crust made up for it. The wine paired flawlessly with the pizza. It was a little sweet, but not too sweet which paired great with the spicy and tanginess of the sauce. Of course I just HAD to get the ice cream. The kind man let us in as the last people to get served even though they were basically closed. We got the Olive Oil ice cream. It was good, but it did seem a bit olive oily for our liking. I didn't expect it to be this potent.

1/2 a grandpa pie- 'nduja was sweet with a little amount of spice.

I have been here twice: 1. At 2:30pm on a Friday, and 2. 5:45pm on a Friday, and those two times were different experiences. 5 stars for the food quality, but -1 for the overall experience (not very comfortable). Experience #1: At 2:30 on a Friday, my husband and I just walked in. There was no line. You can only have dessert or wines at this time, there were no pizzas or pasta dishes. We bought a pint of salted caramel ice cream (no scoops at this time) and ordered a brown butter cake that the ice cream went well with. We sat at one of Gemini's tables on the street to enjoy. Experience #2: At 5:45 on a Friday, there were two lines during the dinner hour: one for dinner and one for the ice cream cart outdoors. My husband and I joined the line for eating in. We waited while the line moved slowly. Once the tables fill up with the first "seating (standing?)", people aren't going to budge for at least 30-45 minutes. The line goes up to the counter for ordering, where you pay, and they'll give you a number. Indoors, you look for a high table to stand at (since there are no seats). We had a table by 6:30, so it was a 45 minute wait from the time we joined the line. You can browse the wines on the shelves while you wait, to think about which bottle you'd like to order. They will bring your wine/food to you, but they have water in pitchers and cups for self-service. The indoor tables are all shareable with other people, so it's not romantic. Good spot for friends and casual dates with a long-time partner. It is a bit cramped indoors. Families would prefer to eat their pizza at one of the outdoor tables. I do not know how you would order just pizza in this scenario, a different reviewer might give that information. My husband and I ordered two pasta dishes, and 1/2 a grandpa pizza pie, which is the perfect amount for two people and very filling. The pasta dishes came out quickly, within 10 minutes, and the pizza came a few minutes after we finished our pasta. The food was delicious, very flavorful. As for the pizza, I love the focaccia bread! Afterwards, we stood in the ice cream cart line, but then left the line after 10 minutes (we had a play to get to). I would say it takes about 2 minutes per customer group, since they allow for sampling, and they only have one person to scoop the ice cream.

They have a great list of unique rotating flavors, and it's always fun to come back to try out their new seasonal releases. A few of my favorites over the years have been their hibiscus sorbet -- a delightful dairy-free addition to their Hispanic Heritage Month flavors that is the perfect balance of tangy and sweet -- the cinnamon cardamom -- a super spiced ice cream that, despite being freezing cold, feels like you're about to drink a warm beverage -- and blueberry sour cream crumble. When I'm feeling less adventurous, they also have a really solid strawberry ice cream that uses real berries (none of that artificial nonsense you see in grocery stores) with a delightful fruity, slightly tangy flavor. There's usually a pretty long line, but it moves quite quickly since they don't allow samples. It's also a small space that gets crowded pretty easily, so I'd recommend taking your ice cream to go and enjoying it as you walk around Mt Pleasant or on the benches just below the entrance to Mount Desert.

There was a decent amount of outdoor seating as well as a little indoor seating. A single scoop was $6 and a triple $9, so you're better off getting a triple to split with your friends if you're comfortable with it. I had the black sesame and my friends got chocolate and kulfi. The black sesame was really nutty and pretty good. The kulfi was rich and full of nuts and cardamom, absolutely delicious. The chocolate was pretty average. I knocked off a star because this place doesn't do flavor testing, which I deem is a must for ice cream places, especially ones with odd flavors.

New Addition to my Ice Cream Mount Rushmore…read more When a friend heard I was heading into surgery, they sent a Yala ice cream care package via Uber Eats. I honestly didn't realize Uber Eats could deliver high-end ice cream--that is dangerous knowledge for an aficionado with limited self-control. I usually have a strict "Fridays only" rule to self-impose some restraint, but those rules go out the window during recovery. (A quick note: the surgery was nothing serious--just finally fixing a skiing failure from Breckenridge back in February.) To give some context on my palate: 6 out of 10 times, I'm ordering vanilla. I resent when people call it "plain vanilla"--vanilla done right is a complex, detailed flavor all on its own. 2 out of 10 times, I'm ordering something with peanut butter (ever since E.T. 'phoned home', I've had a Reese's problem). For the final 2 out of 10, I'll be adventurous with fruit or something unique. I didn't have much prior knowledge of Greek ice cream traditions, so I did some digging. Traditional Greek ice cream (Kaimaki) is often chewy and elastic, but Yala takes a modern approach for DC. They've hit a "middle ground" texture--creamy like American ice cream but light like gelato. They use A2 dairy from South Mountain Creamery, which makes it incredibly smooth and much easier to digest. After a few days of sampling, Yala is firmly within my ice cream pantheon and established on my "Mount Rushmore" alongside Adrian's Custard in Wisconsin and Oberweis in Chicago. I did my tastings "blind"--meaning I looked at it, but I did not read the foundational ingredients before eating and reviewing. Here are the reviews for the four flavors: Mornings with Thea (Orange Label) My daughter led the charge here, describing it as a "tropical orange cream" that felt like a "wave of summer" with a sophisticated, creamy "winter undertone." My own take was that it tasted like a bougie, orange creamcicle, but with incredible orange chunks. I thought it was candied orange zest, which was new to me and amazing, I also thought I caught hints of peach layered in. I later learned these are traditional Greek orange preserves (spoon sweets) swirled into a yogurt and vanilla base. Yia Mas (Pink Label) I'll be honest: I don't even like cherries, and I first thought these were raspberries. But this was fantastic. It has tart wild cherries swirled into a Greek yogurt and vanilla base. The fruit is succulent and pops against the creamy background. American Dream (Brown Label) A blend of "Papou's Promise" vanilla and "Choco-Yala" chocolate. The chocolate pieces are crisp and have a nice crunch, providing a perfect structural contrast to the smooth vanilla. Mint Chip Mou (Green Label) I've always thought of mint chip as a holiday flavor, but this version felt perfect for March. The color is a soft, spring-like green--not an artificial iridescent glow. When first scooped, the aroma pops into the air, similar to the zest of a a ripe, juicy tangerine when you peel it (the effect, not the the flavor or smell). The mint is light and dreamy rather than a full frontal assault, and the small chocolate pieces are a compliment, not a competitor, providing a nice lingering aftertaste. I was floored to find out that "spring" color comes naturally from spinach! The common thread across all these flavors is that they are well-blended, yet the components stand out independently in the profile. It is a masterpiece of textures and tones; the chocolate or the fruit isn't "mushed" into the ice cream but exists as a separate, wonderful experience floating in an ice cream or yogurt environment. I resisted the Yelp urge to rank these against each other, there were no disappointments. Obviously, Papou's Promise vanilla tops my hit list for next to try, I want to compare Greek Blue Summer against my favorite blueberry pie ice cream from Oberweis, and I'd would love to sample anything peanut butter related if they put something out as a seasonal special! A huge thanks again to my kind friend for the recovery fuel. I'm already planning to organize future ice cream socials here for friends and colleagues once I'm back on my feet. Yala is the real deal. #YalaGreekIceCream #GeorgetownDC #IceCreamConnoisseur #GreekDessert #A2Dairy #MountRushmoreOfIceCream #GeorgetownEats #VanillaDoneRight

I stepped inside, heard some great R&B jams playing, and I made my way to work that amazing smell was coming from. Along the way, I passed some cute merch -- insulated bags and more. And then there was a freezer with all of their pints, ice cream sandwiches, and ice cream cakes. I got up to where the scoops are being served, and there was a very helpful sign next to it with all of the descriptions. I appreciate it the thorough breakdown of what has allergens, what has dairy, and what is vegan. I pretty much tried everything. My favorites were the vegan ones (spiced peanut crunch, tamarind spice), the spiced date cake, saffron pistachio, mangos & cream, black forest... I could keep going. I split a generous scoop of the spiced date cake & saffron pistachio and it was divine. I could've gotten some cool toppings too, but decided not to. It was $8 as is XD. It's definitely a splurge, but a unique flavor profile like this I think it's totally worth it. The pints are $12, which also isn't bad for something this unique imo. I'll be back to get some pints. It's awesome that it's in Brooklyn too, so my sister can explore it as well.

I was thrilled when this NY ice cream shop announced it was opening in DC. I'd read about the…read moreamazing flavors online for years and was excited to taste them for myself. I was so excited, in fact, that I waited in line on opening day. While the flavors were indeed exciting, I found the flavor to be muted. I was picturing intense Indian spice that hits you in the face, only to be confronted with very mild flavor. I've been a few times since opening, and I think it's fine, but it doesn't live up to expectations. I've found the soft serve to be better than the hard ice cream, but it almost has too creamy of a texture. The yogurt soft serve flavor with cardamom was the best thing I've tasted there. The ambiance is fine, there is a small patio for warm days. The last time I was there the inside smelled like sewage, eeek!
