A post dinner treat for myself! Van Leeuwen does a great job of advertising online, so when I walked past I was drawn in by the memory and the bright pink of their store walls. Service was exceptionally quick. I was able to try Dirty Chai (specialty flavor), Marionberry Cheesecake, Earl Grey, and Honeycomb and order a scoop of the Earl Grey in just 5 minutes. All of the flavors are quite strong, so I would say try flavors you might like if they were stronger. I tried three other ice cream flavors but wasn't thrilled by any of the (vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb, bigface coffee affogato, and brown sugar cookie dough brownie). We were up for some luxury ice cream to close out the month of July. We first considered getting two cones, but instead focused on the pre-made quart of chocolate chip cookie dough. First let me just say this location is on 14th street and the service was SPECTACULAR! I love that they allow you to sample as many flavors you would like. I enjoyed all of the ones I sampled. They offer both vegan and non vegan options and it's sold inside of the grocery stores. The prices are very reasonable and the scoops you get. It smells so good when you walk inside. They have outdoor seating too. It's clean. Love no bugs are flying around inside. Definitely going back to treat my students and kids to ice cream. read more

I can't begin to share my excitement when I saw all of the dairy-free flavors! Coming from a smaller city, I'm used to very limited vegan options that are almost always sorbet. I ask myself why this ice cream shop and not the others down the street. Van Leeuwen is a New York-based ice cream company that has just opened up a few outposts in DC. I was really happy to see them open one in Adams Morgan, about a mile from my home. I went on a Saturday, as my boyfriend and I wanted to grab dinner at one of our favorite restaurants and then get dessert at Van Leeuwen, just up the street. The store seems designed to minimize crowding in front of the ice cream counter, and there's more seating here than in some locations I've been to. (There's also a streeterie outside, but I suspect that's for another restaurant and not for patrons of Van Leeuwen.) It also appears to offer more vegan options than other locations, but that could be their changing menu. The vegan options are made from cashew and/or oat milk, which provides a certain creaminess that may be lacking in other plant milks. Like all Van Leeuwen locations, there are also pints of ice cream and ice cream bars available for purchase, so bring a cooler with you. Because of this, Van Leeuwen is rapidly becoming one of my favorite ice cream places. read more

We visited Van Leeuwen on a chilly Sunday with a sweet-tooth and hankering for some quality ice cream. Suffice to say we were not disappointed. The interior is bright, welcoming, and we were allowed to sample multiple types of ice cream in order to make our final selections. They have a large variety of flavors available in the case, as well as to go pints of all the classic Van Leeuwen flavors. There were also 4-5 vegan/dairy-free options, which you typically don't see in an ice cream shop. I got the Planet Earth ice cream, which was a vegan ice cream made with spirulina tea and chunks of matcha cake. The ice cream was extremely creamy for a vegan dessert, and the matcha came through super strongly. It was unique and delicious! My partner got the Coffee Affogato flavor as a milkshake. This was absolutely phenomenal: rich, creamy, but not too sweet or heavy as milkshakes tend to be. Our only complaint was the pricing. My single scoop was $9, his milkshake was $11 (the milkshake was a pretty good deal in comparison!). Even so, we are excited to return in the warmer months and try some more delicious and unique flavors! read more
