The food is always good here. I feel like there is a lot to choose from on the menu and it's usually pretty hard for me to decide. I really like the pizza here. My wife and I weren't planning on stopping her for brunch on Saturday but after kickboxing in the morning and an hour at Big Lots we needed to eat! Growing up in Monroeville and going to Gateway high school it was always cool to come to this place when I was younger. My dad went to Gateway back in the 70's and his team won the Wpial so they have his photo here which is always cool to see. I couldn't find it this time around but I know they have it somewhere. When I would visit here in my younger days I would always get a pizza or a calzone. I think they have he best calzones here. If I didn't eat pizza the night before I would have ordered one today. We walked in around 12pm on a Saturday and it was busy. The bar is full but we managed to find a booth. They have a breakfast menu until 2pm on Saturdays and they have their regular menu still. I wanted breakfast but we had a big day ahead of us so I needed to eat something more than breakfast. My wife did order breakfast for herself but I went with their Diablo burger and fries. My wife did enjoy her breakfast and she got a good Irish Coffee so breakfast here isn't bad at all. I thought my burger was ok. I wanted it medium and it was more medium well. It was spicy the way I wanted it because it had peppers, jalapenos, and pepper jack cheese on it but the ingredients just weren't as fresh as I like them. They tasted like they were just from a jar. The fries were plain too. They tasted better once I put some S and P on them but I was expecting the fries to be better seasoned. It was nice to come back here but I'm not sure if we will be back anytime soon. My husband and I went for breakfast on Saturday and we were taken back by the line to get in. There were lots of patrons, but mostly it was just disorganized. Tables that should have been turned were just sitting with dirty plates waiting for attention. Meanwhile you had a couple of servers hustling and others were just trying to sneak in a few minutes on their cellphone. It just felt disorganized... When we finally were sat, we placed our order for eggs and coffee. Things tasted okay, but they only way I'd get a refill is if I grabbed the coffee pot myself. Maybe we went on an off day...? Monroeville is overcrowded with chain restaurants so it's nice to find a place out this way that's original. Gateway Grill is a perfectly respectable option in that regard. It's casual and family friendly. You're never without a TV in eyesight if you're trying to watch a game. I came with a group of 12+ and the service was accommodating. We were told in advance they don't formally take reservations but they were prepared for us since we had called ahead and we were seated quickly. Maybe we got lucky, but it worked out all the same. I had a Cuban sandwich and we shared a few orders of wings around the table. No complaints about anyone's order. They have daily specials on food and drinks and the beer selection is decent. Food is wood fired. Looks like the breakfast menu is pretty extensive, so that's probably the next thing I'd come back for. I'll add a star for my next trip if breakfast measures up. read more

As soon as we walked in, it was apparent that the air conditioning was not working. Ceiling fans were going so ok not too bad. It was good that the food came out very quickly! Anyway, my date ordered a side salad, which was what you'd expect at a sports bar--bagged salad with a few cherry tomatoes, onion, and cucumber. It was tiny, so I thought $6.50 was a lot for that. Whatever. We both ordered burgers. She had a standard cheeseburger, and I had the "Spicy Burger," topped with some peppers and pepper jack cheese. The Spicy Burger toppings were generous and fresh. I don't know why the server asked how we wanted our burgers cooked because they both came out well done, regardless of our requests. The meat itself wasn't particularly flavorful, and we both felt like the burger patties were frozen, not fresh. Burgers came with a heaping helping of "fresh cut" fries, but it was obvious that they weren't fresh from the fryer. They had sat awhile under the heat lamp before they got to our plates. I ordered a Fathead's Yinzer lager, which was flat and not cold at all. Atmosphere was typical sports bar--meh. Service was friendly and as already mentioned, food was served quickly. I've only been there for breakfast but it's a solid local place. Breakfast fare is standard, but tasty and reasonably priced. The servers are friendly and the food comes out fast. It's not super gourmet, but it is good food at good prices which is what I like when getting breakfast. read more

I love this place!! They have everything I want and like there. Pizza, Calzones, wings, sandwiches and BEEEEER! On this particular night I decided to order a BBQ chicken salad. It wasn't on the menu but I turned a buffalo into a BBQ. It was really good, fresh lettuce and cheese, hot chicken. They had beer special going on. We bought the 21st amendment IPA and got to take home the glass they served it in. The beer itself was pretty good along with the other selections on draft and the two walls of beers. The husband order some ribs and man where they good. They had that perfect smokey flavor and the sauce was just as good. I always prefer sweet baby ray's but I believe they have a homemade sauce. They are usually busy sometimes with a 20 minute wait. They have one of the best calzones I've ever had, seriously good! read more

Pittsburg has countless good eats, however when it comes to dinner, I can't say that Gateway Grill is among these greats. What it does offer is cheap eats and something for everyone. We were here recently with a large group and had the opportunity to try several of their appetizers, which included potato skins, fries, calzones, wings and mozzarella sticks. The apps were all okay, but nothing spectacular. For dinner we ordered a medium cheese pizza with broccoli and mushrooms. It was huge, large enough for the entire table, but lacked flavor. It didn't have much sauce, and aired on the side of salty. I've read other positive reviews about this restaurant but wonder if it is best to dine here for breakfast as opposed to late night snacks. They do offer a full bar, which includes wine, beer and hard liquor. Drinks are reasonably priced. read more

This place is always busy for a good reason. They serve great ribs, pizza, wings and a good selection of tasty meals and sandwiches and hoagies. The wood fired grill definitely adds to the great flavor of the grilled food. The beer selection is outstanding and if you wanted you could get a martini too. They have really good service and the staff does care if you are being served. There is a bar and there are TVs everywhere. I try to eat here or get a takeout several times a month. My last visit was 1/10/12 and had Pizza, Wings and a great draft. Oh yeah, I should add that they have a breakfast menu and the food, eggs etc. is very good homemade non-chain. This was my second trip here and I can now say with confidence that I like it! PROS: One of the biggest Beer selections that I've ever seen under one roof! And not just domestic crap, but imports, micro-brews, etc. They had Magic Hat on Draft! :) Great Food; Reasonably Priced; Casual atmosphere; Fast, Friendly Service; a TON of TV's and VERY sports friendly! CONS: I wish the menu were more creative. Lots of burgers and sandwiches, wings and typical bar foods and appetizers. Suggestions: My husband ordered the Pittsburgher (a big burger) and said it was really good. I ordered the Swordfish (that was on for the Lenten Special) and it was also pretty good! Always pass by this place and it's always busy according to the fullness of the parking lot. So busy that it put me off, but, finally, dined here last night. Pros: Found a parking spot even though it was quite packed. Quick service and empty tables even though the parking lot was busy. Cons: Grilled chicken salad with fries atop not all that special. Ranch dressing pretty bland. Extensive beer menu only does one good if they actually remember to bring the beer. For whatever reason, beer not brought and not charged. In town for a funeral, we were starved after checking into our nearby hotel. The hotel staff recommended this place, so we gave thank you very much it a try. It's very nice and clean inside and appears to be a local hangout / bar / restaurant, which to me, is a lot better than frequenting a chain restaurant. Unfortunately, it was VERY loud inside and hard to have a conversation with my wife. She ordered the cheesesteak and I ordered the Pittsburgher hamburger. Our food came out waaaay faster than expected, and the fries are homemade and spectacular. My burger was cooked to perfection, but I didn't care for the vinegar based Cole slaw. Overall, my burger was very good. The steak used on my wife's cheesesteak was prime rib, which is not necessarily Philly traditional. She's a cheesesteak aficionado and gave it a 4 out of 10. I started coming to the Gateway Grill in 2001 when I lived in the area. Over the next few years I hit the Gateway pretty hard, enjoying steaks, wings, and burgers. All were excellent and to top it off they have fresh cut fries.i don't get to frequent the restaurant/bar as much as I would like but when I'm in the area I stop in. I had the privilege of eating there with my family today. My wife and I had wings and my boys had burgers. The wings were better than I remembered and both of my sons devoured their burgers. Service was equally outstanding. Yes, the drink prices can be a little higher than they should but you aren't going to have a bad meal here. The six pack shop is next door and there are plenty of beers on tap. I highly recommend! read more

We know this to be very true as it impacted a life long friend of my youngest who was working there at the time. Been going to gateway grill since it was macs and even before that. And I've never been treated so badly and forgotten about so often as this visit. My wife and I just wanted to stop for a quick bite before relaxing at home for the evening. We arrived around 7:30 and immediately noticed the lack of staff. In face two servers were all we saw. Finally after about 10 minutes were seated and it was that busy-I've seen it much worse! After being seated we got our beverages immediately and I put an order of Buffalo wings in for an appetizer. Our wings came out and we ordered our food. Waitress was busy and kinda short and cold with us, but managed to get our order out to us quickly. As my wife and I sat and talked the usual people flowed in and out. We noticed a big group of older couples waiting at the door to be seated. Well there just happened to be two empty 8 top tables next to us across the isle. Which of course was where they sat. Well that was the end of our happy dinner time. First they were all rude and loud and secondly they all wanted drinks from the bar. Well the server realized this meant money for her so she forgot about us. We were never asked if we needed anything or if everything was ok or for refills on drinks. After I sat for 30 mins without a beverage (which was water and wife had tea) she finally noticed while refilling their drinks and taking their food order that we may need attending too. Well by then it was too late and we had so many complaints and were so disappointed that we just wanted to leave. We asked for containers for take home food and the check. We had two Cheese steak hoagies wings and fries with gravy. The gravy was spoiled and cold and fries were under cooked. Bottom line was poor service after she got a bigger table with more tip possibility and she was cold and unprofessional while being a bit snippy. You take care of all your customers equally despite the size of their check and I happen to be a great tipper and she missed out. For dinner, gateway grill is one of the best sports bars around. Their hoagies are great. But for breakfast, my wife and I didn't have as a great a meal. She ordered poached eggs, which by definition are steamed with water. But gateway grill makes them with margarine. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet which was good but not great. It was loaded with ham though, so at least it wasn't small. We will stick with their hoagies and try somewhere else for breakfast. read more

She stopped into the Gateway Grill and asked to purchase a pizza box for the craft. The younger girl at the front said she didn't know what to do and that she'd ask her manager. The manager said he'd sell the medium sized pizza box for $7. I've been to the restaurant for breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks. It's always been good not great. I will never step foot inside this place ever again. Being a business owner/manager means being good with people. Thanks for making my mom's day harder than it had to be. They have a lot of beer options if that's your thing. It's food. It's near a hotel. You will neither be disappointed nor impressed with the experience. This is the closest restaurant to my house. I have to admit the first time I went here several years ago I ordered a salad and thought..."eh, average food" Don't get me wrong, the salad was decent...but really people, its a salad. So I never bothered to go out of my way to try this place again. Now....fast forward a few years and a group of us decided to stop in for a quick bite and I ordered the wood fire grilled Western Burger. OMG! Delious! I craved this burger for 2 weeks until I begged the hubby for us to go back just so I could get it again! During that visit, my son had the Spicy burger and loved it as well. Our other son had the ribs and said they were best he has had in a long long time. I would have to agree and on our 4th visit I ordered my own and they are among the best. Fall off the bone yummy! On our 5th visit, between the group of us we tried the steak (which was good, not great, but still tasty) the ribs again, the burger again, both excellent as always. A new item tried this visit was the fish club: a tasty piece of lightly battered cod with 3 large battered shrimp covered in melted cheese garnished with the standards on a soft hoagie bun - MY NEW FAVORITE FISH SAMMY!!! I know where my "go to" place will be during Lent this year!!! On our 6th visit, our group stuck with the ribs, burgers and tried the wedding soup with good reviews and the steak hoagie which was stated as being very good; not the best he has had, but tasty none the less. On our 7th visit, the burger, fish, ribs and wings was the groups decision. All well received as usual. Are you seeing a pattern people?! lol.... While dining in, we noticed many many pizzas being served and they all looked amazing as they were delivered right from the wood fired ovens to the table. As also did the strombolis and calzones, which are next on our list to try. As many others mentioned, there is a wide range of beer selections to choose from and coolers on the upper level for you to explore the assortment. The place is always busy, obviously for a reason. So get up and go try some great food at this local neighborhood favorite and you won't be disappointed. terrible experience this evening! i order take out at least 2-3 times per week and today I spend $75 on take out. I ordered 2 salads 1 medium pizza and 12 wings my salad didn't have any lettuce, my second salad didn't have any chicken not to mention there wasn't any cheese on either salad! i drove 45 min to get my food because again I'm a loyal BUT tonight pissed me off completely! i called the manager and the responce I got was "well I find that hard to believe!" We walked in with a group 25 people at 9pm an hour before close. There were not many options for places to eat in the area that could accommodate our hockey team and parents. They provided great service and the pizza and wings were fantastic. We cant thank the few staff members enough for handling our large crowd at an hour before close. They absolutely nailed it. I love their pizza. But the last three times I ordered take out, there has been a problem. I ordered a half pepperoni and half bacon and the pizza was presented bacon and pepperoni on one half and the other half plain. I didn't have time to have them remake it. We finally tried this place out after living right down the road for a year and a half. We were seated immediately (this was a weeknight visit) and our waitress checked on us an appropriate amount. I ordered blackened salmon, which I found perfectly cooked. However, the vegetable medley I got as a side was swimming in butter/oil, destroying any notion I had of it being a healthy option. The fries I also had were good. Nothing fantastic, but perfectly fine. The real damning factor was the PRICE of beer samples! The waitress informed me I would charged **$3.50** for a beer sample! The price of a full glass was $5.50! Who is going to pay over 50% of the full price for a sample?! Seemed like a total money grab. I've paid for samples before but it's been $1 or less. We are likely not going to return any time soon. Dad's and Caliente have greater variety in their menus, higher quality and FREE beer samples. read more

Stopped here while on the road and it was surprisingly terrific!! I eat healthy and simple. They met my needs with a large green salad full of veggies, including tomatoes, cukes, peppers, black olives, mushrooms, and red onion. I had the vegetable medley side dish of fresh, grilled tasty vegetables. The main course was perfectly grilled chicken breasts. They were thick and juicy--not an easy feat! but the big surprise was two large breast halves. This was not a skimpy meal! My husband had the NY strip and he was not disappointed either! Maybe a bread basket might have been nice? Our server must be one of the hardest working women in Pennsylvania. She was juggling a lot of balls and still managed to be super attentive. Give this woman a raise!! The only reason for the 4 stars is the ambience. I am not a sports bar person and that's what this is. Still, I had an interesting experience watching a rodeo.
