Gatehouse Tavern is located in the Gateway Commons shopping center. Lowe's Foods is the anchor. Parking tends to be hard to find near the restaurant, so more spaces are available if you park closer to the grocery store. The sports bar is divided into two sections: a dining room with tables and booths, and a bar with high-top seating. The restaurant was fairly quiet until the karaoke was about to start. Then it seemed like you needed to scream to hear a conversation. They also have trivia nights, so that likely isn't as loud. I ordered the Wagyu Burger, and it was cooked to order and delicious. The mashed potatoes for the side were lukewarm and rather dry and bland. The way they were presented at the table made it seem as if they were meant to go with something, like butter or gravy. I would not recommend the mashed potatoes, but the burger was delicious. The sweet potato fries, another had as a side, looked good, as did a salad. Service seemed good at first with the drink and food orders. But once the food was brought out, I don't think we saw the waitress again until it was time for the checks. A bill with a credit card for another guest at a different table was even brought out with the processed checks. So make sure you get the correct credit card back. read more

This used to be a good restaurant. The menu was good the atmosphere was good, the menu items felt elevated. Now, something has happened. The sandwiches are now pitiful. They look like something you would find in local grocery store. Sara Lea buns ... squished.... Tiny.... The only thing that I can come up with is that they are struggling to make money and so they looked for ways to cut costs and therefore quality. No one has ever saved a business by putting out a worse product. You save a business by narrowing your menu and elevating those items above the market. $100 bill for low quality food products. Really rude lady answering the phone on a Thursday evening at 10pm. Apparently I was one of several people who called asking if the kitchen was still open at 10pm for their late night menu but they close their kitchen whenever they want whether it be 8pm or 10pm. Cute pub-like feel inside. Bartender Nicole was friendly and fast. Try the gummy bear shot! Server Stacy was super nice, gave great recommendations, and was very accommodating. The cheese curds were good - try them! Veggie flatbread pizza was huge and flavorful! All the stringy delicious ooey-gooey cheesy goodness! I believe 8 slices so definitely share or take home leftovers! Our friends didn't love the Eggroll app and my husband didn't love the wings. The tots looked delish golden brown and crispy. Not sure why this place has less than 4 stars. It's not a high end bougie restaurant, but the menu is extensive and has something for everyone. I would call this upscale/craft bar food. We came on National Margarita Day so I opted for the premium margarita. Not the best I have ever had, but it was smooth and not cheap tasting. Very good. We got the zucchini fries to start. Amazing. Light and crispy with the best homemade ranch. I always ask my server what their favorite menu item is if I've never been. I opted for her recommendation which I had been eyeing anyways - the sweet spicy fried chicken sandwich. Had a major kick without too much sweet which I loved. Get yourself some ranch or blue cheese on the side to dip it in to cut the spice a bit. My friend got the cheeseburger flatbread. It was huge. Our server says the size differs based on who is in the kitchen just fyi. Loved our server Sarah. We used to really like this place but the food quality has gone down significantly in the last 6 months. Recently my daughter was served rotten Mac and cheese. It was obviously spoiled the second we smelled it. At the same meal my other daughter was served a burger and the bun was as hard as a brick. She (only 7) showed it to the server who then did nothing about it. She even banged it on the plate to see how hard it was. She Did not being a replacement, did not give a refund, just seemed to think it was okay to serve food like that. We used to come here all the time but or last 3 meals have been less than acceptable. Updated review - got a coupon in the mail for $10 off at Gatehouse so decided to give them another try. Our last visit was not a good one but happy to say that today's meal was an improvement! Went out as a family and all four of us liked our meals. We started with the spinach artichoke dip - our server let us know it takes a while to come out - she was right. A good 20 minutes passed until the dip arrived, but it was very good and worth the wait. Lots of artichoke and very cheesy. Our entrees were a chopped salad with grilled chicken for me, a chef salad for my husband, a bun less burger and the fried chicken sandwich for our daughters. Hubby loved his salad, burger and sweet potato fries were very good, fried chicken sandwich was good (a bit too spicy for me), and lastly my chopped salad was a bit of a disappointment. I think the walnuts and dressing just weren't for me - however, I tried a bite of everyone else's meals and they were all very good. We'll definitely visit Gatehouse again - next time, I'll choose a different salad, though. read more

A Lot to Like / A Few Disappointments Gatehouse is a tavern the whole family can enjoy. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly; and the service comes with a smile. For beer-lovers, there are over 30 draft options and over 40 bottles and cans of all the old reliables, plus many locally brewed craft specialities. It's also a great place to hang out and watch your favorite teams on TV. Their promise is: "If it's on, we'll find it." We started our evening with the House Nacho Tray ($11 - add Pork, Chicken or Chili for additional $6) and Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds ($12). The Nachos were some of the best we've had; and were loaded with plenty of Queso, Sour Cream, Black Beans, Salsa, Scallions and Jalapeños. The Fried Cheese Curds were crunchy on the outside and warm and melty on the inside. The tangy Marinara Dipping Sauce was just right. The Double Bacon Smash Burger ($17 with Fries, Chips, Pasta Salad or Green Salad) was everything you want in a big, juicy burger. The flavorful House Burger Sauce is the perfect finishing touch. For a real treat, try the Smoked Brisket Burnt Ends with Pickled Jalapeños ($17 Sandwich - $20 Platter with Cole Slaw & Potato Salad). Sandwiches are served on a fresh-baked Brioche Bun. I also recommend the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich ($16 including a side). The Steak was tender and tasty and covered with Peppers, Mushrooms, Onions and Provolone. The Hoagie Roll was the star - perfection. My sandwich came with just a dribble of cheese; but a quick return to the kitchen solved the problem. The Potato Salad was a nice addition. The disappointments were the Tavern Chili ($10 for a large bowl) and Fish and Chips ($17). Even with the Cheese, Sour Cream, Scallions and Jalapeños, I found the chili to be bland and uninteresting. If you are a true Chili aficionado, I recommend getting your Chili fix somewhere else. The 'hand battered' Fish was breaded (not battered) and lacked that distinctive crunch you expect from properly prepared fish and chips. The two medium-sized pieces of fish reminded me of the ones you find in the frozen food section of a local supermarket. Give Gatehouse a try; I'm sure you will find some of your favorites on their wide-ranging menu. read more

3 1/2 stars Gatehouse Tavern is located in Gateway Commons shopping center in Wake Forest. They sort of share a space with Farm Table Restaurant, which is right next door. We have been there many times in the past but, haven't been here in awhile due to the pandemic. This is your typical sports bar venue. It is loud, there are lots of TVs, the food is relatively good, the service is quick and the prices are reasonable. We started with an order of wings (grilled) with two side sauces, sweet chili and Parmesan. The wings were great! They were tasty and the sauces that accompanied them were good. For dinner I got the Yankee Burger. It was cooked to order and the BBQ sauce on it was tasty. The sweet potato fries that came with them were a bit soggy and cold. I'm guessing the dish was not sitting under a heater. My wife got the Tavern Cobb (minus the avocado). She liked it. The vegetables were crisp and fresh according to her. My son ordered the Buffalo Chicken sandwich, which he enjoyed. His sweet potato fries were more crisp and not as soggy. No pictures this time We follow a diet where we fast on Friday's, so when the plates went down on the table, the food was quickly gone. Gatehouse Tavern is a nice spot to grab and after work beer or drink, enjoy a burger, and catch a game. Nothing fancy and nothing special. read more

I've been to Gatehouse Tavern many times in the past five years. I'm sorry to say that quality is sliding. More than once my onion rings have been presented very overcooked. Rather than golden brown they arrive very dark brown with black areas. Twice I've asked they be replaced and twice the replacement was only slightly less overcooked. I know that since the Covid debacle it's been hard to find good employees and that prices have risen due to inflation, but paying over $27 with tax and tip for the New Yorker, onion rings and an iced tea is over the top. You know... their food is great but their service sucks. Once, I went to pick up my food, they pointed to the register at the back of the bar... cool, I walked back, paid, left. The second time I picked up an order, I did what I was told to do the first time and walked to the register at the back of the bar. The bartender ignored me. The three employees that were gathered by the register stood there and ignored me. Three other employees walked over, ignored me, and began chatting amongst themselves, as if I was just standing there as a prop. I asked the six employees who were gathered, if this was where I was to pick up my order... one responded annoyed, that I needed to go to the other end of the bar for that. Hm. Ok. So I did. I stood at the other end as told and was again... IGNORED. Wtf is going on here? The kid who told me to get in the corner (lol) had to get the attention of the bartender who was supposed to check me out. Apparently everyone else is incapable of performing this simple task. When she finally asked me my name... she had an attitude with a smile... meaning, she was condescending. What ever happened to CUSTOMER SERVICE??? It's gone and old school? It's not. Great bar restaurant, we come here a couple of times a month. We've only sat at the bar but the rest of the place looks good. They do have music on the weekends, not sure of the times. The bar staff is friendly, it's not a place to chat with the staff because it seems they are very busy but they are nice and friendly. Foods good, great salads and flat breads. I do miss the Philly cheesesteak flat bread because I was told they change the menu occasionally I was told. Doesn't seem a weekly change but I guess every few months or so maybe? It seems consistent and that is the one thing we like. So give it a try. read more

We moved here from out of state and this place was recommended to us based off of the wings. First 'visit' was takeout and I got the steak tacos. Awful. No flavor, just some diced steak on a tortilla. Based off of the wings alone, we chose to visit again. The saving grace of this spot was the wait staff. We took our kids (including our eight month old daughter) with us and the waitress was out of this world. So attentive, very kind. My five year old son even commented on how kind she was while we visited. My eight month old had a good, solid projectile vomit while we were there and the waitress was so considerate and helpful in cleaning up the mess. I got the Sombrero burger, which was underwhelming, and my husband got the wings, which were good. He got their hottest hot sauce on the side and, folks, it's spicy even for us who love spicy food. The only reason for my star rating is based solely off of service. Wings are ok. Other than that, not really impressed with the rest of the food. read more

Today I went to gatehouse tavern, it's only my second visit there but won't be the last. We were greeted by the hostess, Annalise , she was so nice and personable, made us feel right at home immediately. We were sat in Kate's section and greeted with the friendliest, most welcoming smile! She took our drink orders and was back in a flash. We needed a few minutes to decide what we wanted, Kate made some suggestions also. We ordered the shrimp tacos and the BLT (both on lunch menu) the food came out in a timely manner and was delicious! My mother hardly ever finishes her meal but she couldn't stop eating her BLT and pasta salad!!! (My only critique would be that I would have liked an option for grilled shrimp rather then fried.) We tried this place after i searched for "steak" on yelp...no steak. Yelp is a liar. They do, however, have a decent selection of burgers and sandwiches here. It should be mentioned there was a steak quesadilla and you can add steak to salads. We tried the Carolina burger (veeeery messy, chili and cole slaw) and the Peacemaker burger. Also had the philly cheesesteak eggrolls. Everything was excellent. There is no bread for the table so order an appetizer if you want to munch on something before your main dish arrives. Always a great place for a lunch or dinner! The service is always outstanding! We have always enjoyed the food.

Tonight we were incredibly disappointed with the food and how our situation was handled. Our server was kind and pleasant but someone messed up two orders and brought entirely the wrong dishes. We had ordered drinks and they brought out one of our three meals correctly. The server was apologetic and the kitchen staff brought fries for the two that didn't have burgers yet. The person from the kitchen promised the other burgers in 3-4 minutes. We proceeded to wait for far longer than that. When the correct burgers came out, the one was dry and the bun was hard as if it sat under a warmer the entire time we waited. We expressed our concerns to the server and she was again apologetic for the issues we had. She said the kitchen had messed up multiple orders tonight and they weren't even busy enough to explain their errors. We asked for the bill and paid close to 70 dollars for a very disappointing meal. Definitely won't rush back there. read more
