Many years ago I used a locksmith that was recommended to me by a friend. His helper was the locksmith that now owns Garo's so I have continued with Garo's since my original guy has retired. In the past, I was very satisfied with his service. But now I have reason to go elsewhere. Rocky (Garo's) came this week in my response to a no longer working bedroom door lock in our historically designated home. Rocky suggested he would pick up two replacement locks (as there was some problem with another one and I thought I might need two). He arrived with the two, reproduction locks, in silver, not gold finish to match our home. Not a big deal as I only wanted to use the guts of the lock and keep my antique doorknobs and plates. Changed the one out and said just keep the 2nd one as you may need it later. Huh, I thought, well OK. On the receipt he charged me $150 for two installed locks plus a $48 service charge. Adding tax means I wrote a check for $211.50. On a hunch the next day I went to Home Depot to look for such a lock. There they were for $21.97. Yep, he charged me 200+% mark-up per lock. Copied 2 sets of 4 keys (8 keys total!!) for $20. I couldn't believe how cheap it was. He copied even the ones that say Do Not Duplicate on them (mailbox and lobby key). Other locksmiths I asked require a letter from the apartment manager or some bullcrap. So much trouble for lost keys. His hours are on and off, depending if he gets an emergency call or not, so I would call to see if he's there before heading out. read more

These guys are awesome! I lost my keys when I was in San Diego for the weekend, and AAA had to come and make me a new key for my car. All my spare keys had to be programmed to the new key that AAA made, so I called Garo's via a reference. Very honest, friendly, straightforward and reasonable. They quoted me around $60 for one key over the phone (depending on how difficult it would be to program). It ended up taking longer than expected (45min - 1 hour) and I brought an extra key to program. He charged me a total of $70. Extremely reasonable, honest, and friendly people. Rocky is the kindest, most compassionate man. I am so glad I had to have my rental car key replaced (the service at the car rental place was so poor that when I called them, they were like "Uhhhh...call a locksmith?") I was stranded on Sunset in the heat and I called Rocky. He was by my side in less than half an hour, didn't leave me until I could safely get in my car and drive away (the car rental place gave us incorrect info about the car so it took a long time to get the key correct. I was in a sticky situation on 12am. I lost my keys to get in the house and my door was locked to my room too. I had to stay at my friends house til the morning. I called and the owner picked up and called back with cell phone and I text him my address. I was lucky to have the guys at Garo's to come to my house and unlock my door in a couple mins. Love this guy! Got a sticky key? No problemo...he'll make you a new one that works just fine, using your old, busted key as the "original." And he charged me a dollar. A dollar! You can even bring in those specialty keys painted like your sports team, and he'll make a key that outshines Home Depot every day of the week. The key to my Saturn was worn down and thus it was hard to start- required a LOT of random wiggling around and such. However, it still worked fine in the door. Ralphie (think I'm getting his name right) pretty quickly diagnosed the problem: Not only was my key worn but the weight of my keychain over the years was wearing on the ignition as well. That's why it didn't seem to work the same in ignition vs. door. So, he made 2 fresh keys - one that works great in the ignition and one that works great in the door. Having problem with entrance key, had to call my usual locksmith (Archer's Lock in Glendale), Archers Lock did not have the courtesy to return my call. Truly Exceptional Service. I needed replacement keys for my vehicle on a Saturday. I called up Raffi who made the keys specific to the make and model of my car, but we then discovered that a previous owner had changed the lock. Which meant Raffi had to take apart the entire ignition on the spot so he could fabricate a new key. The amazing thing is he told me he was getting off work when he started. So I told him it could wait, but he insisted on getting the job done done. It took almost 2 hours, and he charged me a rate that was considerably better than what I was quoted on the phone from other companies. Not only that, but he advised me how I could get partial reimbursement from AAA! If you have need for a locksmith, don't bother looking through Yelp further. Had to get my car key reprogrammed (the key itself, not the fob), and Garo did it quickly. This was about a month ago, took about 20 minutes on Saturday morning, cost 70 in cash and he may have not given me a receipt (I can't exactly remember) which may be an issue if for some reason the reprogramming didn't take. I'm house/ dogsitting in East Hollywood for a friend spending the summer in New York. The place is a veritable fortress of bars, steel doors, and deadbolts. Perfect for the upcoming zombie apocalypse, less than ideal when door shuts with dog, keys, etc inside. I looked on yelp, Garo's seemed close, so I gave a call. He was there in less than 10 minutes. He was extremely courteous and within another 5 minutes, the door was open. The only other time something similar happened in the area my quote ended up being a fraction of the final cost. Not so this time...the damage? A very reasonable $55. This is the only locksmith I will ever go to or refer others to. If I could give a dozen stars, I would.
