Ganko is likely my favorite spot for ramen in the Boston area. I like Hokkaido ramen and I love those thicker and wavy noodles. I would go to the original Brookline location but this one is a little easier for me to get to. My go-to is the OG miso ramen, It's very rich and hearty, leaving you quite satisfied after eating. If you want a "cleaner" flavor, then shio is a good choice. The portions are rather generous and they don't skimp on the toppings. You actually get a 1/2 egg included, which is becoming rare these days. The karaage (fried chicken) isn't the crispiest I've ever had but it is really flavorful and tender. The marinating and using boneless chicken thighs lends itself to having those two traits. Service is generally friendly and prompt. The area inside is a little dark, and uses artificial lighting to stay somewhat bright, but it's fine. This is a less cramped space than the Brookline location and since it's in a strip mall, there's parking. The area is rather devoid of ramen shops, so this was a much-welcomed addition. read more

I had heard about this spot for a while but hadn't had the chance to visit--until now, and I'm glad I did. This Japanese-style ramen restaurant offers a diverse selection of ramen along with other menu options. The space is well laid out, with plenty of seating, including bar seating where you can watch and engage in the food preparation experience. The service was prompt and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. If you're in the area and looking for a great ramen spot, I would definitely recommend giving this place a try. I've been here twice now and the first time I went - easy 5/5 experience. The service and all the food was top tier. I was ready to declare Ganko Ittetsu the best ramen in the South Shore. Second time I went... easily a 2/5 experience, complete 180 from the first time. Waited 30 minute for a bowl of lukewarm and bland tsukumen. Now we love the original location out in Brookline, has the cozy ambiance and feel. Not many tables but inside the little plaza. They have no opened a new location in Braintree !!! So much closer to home. Spacious, accommodates more people and clean! Now GPS brought us to the plaza, but like the lady said, we thought we got played haha because they don't have an actual sign up yet, but the door has a small "GANKO" name above the door number. Free parking. Staff were really nice. Quality i feel is consistent with the original! Love their noodz, has a nice chew to it, broth was flavorful, I think i like Tora's tantan broth a bit more but ganko noodles is better! This'll be my ramen spot locally and I'm happy about it haha! Now the karage, this my favorite karage at the original especially! The tendies seemed a bit smaller / less crunchy than the Brookline location but could have just been the selection we had this time. Still juicy and crispy. This small ramen spot has a really cool vibe with its bright red decor and unique lighting. The spot is cozy and while there was a 20 minute wait, we actually waited about 15 min and were seated promptly. The service was friendly and attentive. The ramen itself was definitely different from what I'm used to. I can't say it was my favorite, but I appreciate that it seemed authentic. They had pork, vegetarian and pescatarian options only. Is that a ramen thing? No beef or chicken? I tried the Tan Tan ramen and Kara-age chicken ( thigh). The ramen was creamy and nutty and not as spicy as I had liked it to be. 3/5 for the ramen. The beer selection was awesome ! I tried something new and absolutely loved it. The guava cider was delish and the Blue comet was bomb. Overall, a decent experience. The food: This place has fantastic ramen (my favorite is the Shoyu 1910) but don't miss the other items -- had the Gankara Yakisoba (stir fried noodles) with pork last night and it was incredible. I requested it extra spicy with extra veggies and oh my god. It arrived steaming hot and looked beautiful. The portion was gigantic and every bite had so much flavor! The noodles were super glossy and everything was perfectly cooked, including the cabbage, which retained its crispness and was not soggy. My friend and I also shared the chicken kara-age (crispy is a MUST!) with the Thai curry remoulade as an appetizer. I think more people should experience what Japanese fried chicken tastes like when it melts in your mouth, smothered in a slightly sweet, bright and creamy curry dipping sauce. Hats off to their chefs--they are working some culinary magic back in the kitchen. The drinks: I haven't had many drinks from here, but if you're a wine person, I recommend the Donnhoff Riesling! My boyfriend, who isn't really into wine, loves it, and a coworker of mine even mentioned (in a completely unrelated conversation) that it stood out to her as the best white wine she's had recently. Last night, I had the yuzu beer, which was pretty good and smooth, though I do wish the yuzu flavor was a bit more prominent. The ambiance: Really appreciate the vibe Ganko Ittetsu has. With the black walls, industrial-style lamps and seating, wood tables and bar (which tapers off to a live edge), and giant custom mural of ramen enjoyers silhouetted in red (which greets you when you first walk in, a taste of what is to come), you get a sense that a bowl of ramen or a plate of noodles is modern and cool. And you, perhaps, are modern and cool for being there. The service: Fantastic service. Of the times I've been there, I've never had an issue. Food is served much faster than expected, but that may depend on the time of day/how busy the restaurant is. The wait staff are knowledgeable of the menu items and even offer suggestions, which is really nice. Our server last night was very friendly, and you could tell cared a lot about the food and our preferences. My friend ordered a yakisoba for her husband to-go, and they were able to accommodate his shellfish allergy. Overall, this is a great spot for friends, dates, coworkers, families (they even have ramen for kids!), and the like. As someone who grew up in the suburbs around here and never had a place like this nearby, I'm so happy the folks at Ganko Ittetsu brought their ramen to the south shore. read more

Came here on a Friday afternoon with friends for lunch and was quickly seated by the friendly staff. The place was very clean and have a nice decor. For the appetizers, we tried the fried fish cakes and karaage. Both were delicious, crispy and not ouly at all. The chicken was so juicy and it paired nicely with the curry dipping sauce. We also got some gyoza and it was perfectly fried and the filling was on perfectly seasoned. I tried the tsukemen and it was perfect. The noodles have a great texture while the soup was thick and creamy. My friends tried the tan tan and the Sapporo ship ramen, they both said it was delicous. I was literally so excited when I saw that Ganko Ittetsu opened in Braintree! I am a HUGE fan of their location in Brookline & have been going to that one for years. Though the drive isn't too bad to go that one, I am still very grateful that there is one even closer now... PLUS this one has more tables + seating available! Much larger than the Brookline one & this one can accommodate more people + bigger parties. We actually thought we had gotten lost when we arrived & that the GPS lied to us haha. When we got to the parking lot, we were expecting a larger sign but luckily we were able to locate it. Now, for the food, pretty much the same quality! So here is what we ordered today for lunch: -Kara-age, extra crispy + Korean chili sauce -Karai Shoyu ramen -Tan-Tan ramen The Kara-age arrived first and initially we were questioning how it would taste because it looked visually very light in color, however, it was still delicious! The Karai Shoyu & Tan-Tan ramen were both very good. Noodles had a nice chew to them. Our server was also very kind, helpful, and attentive. I'd say, the only difference really is that the dishes don't come out as fast or maybe it just feels that way because the Brookline one usually asks for your order and they put it in before you get seated. The Braintree location has better vibe and bigger space than the quaint Brookline. Ordered karai shoyu ramen and chicken kara-age extra crispy. We were really excited to try this new ramen place. Having moved to halfway between Boston and Providence from Las Vegas, we went from being surrounded by ramen shops to basically nothing without having to drive into the city or Brookline. We started out with an order of karaage. The menu offers a few dipping sauces, but we do classic and get none. Classic karaage, not overly marinated, some lemon juice on top, crunchy potato starch crust, but the pieces themselves were gigantic! Like 1/2 a thigh. The order came with three pieces, but they could have been easily cut into 3 pieces each. Definitely would have preferred 9 manageable pieces vs the chunks we got. When it came to the ramen, this is where things failed to deliver :( We got the 1920 Shoyo and the 2.0 Shoyu. - Slow delivery on the ramen. The restaurant was very busy, but it was a ramen place, and we ordered ramen. Why are did it take so long? - Toppings, so much dried seaweed and lots of green onion (not complaining about the latter, we love green onion). - 1/2 a marinated egg that, while ideally cooked with the jammy style yolk, lacked flavor - Chashu was also disappointing, again lacking flavor - Noodles lacked the eggy taste that you normally expect with ramen noodles - The broth started out strong for shoyu both, but by the end it had soaked up all the flavor from the dried seaweed and was just bitter, I couldn't finish it. The service was fast and friendly. Really cool mural inside and the overall atmosphere did a pretty good job of replicating the feel of ramen places we have been to in Tokyo and Nagoya. The drink menu is pretty big with a good verity of alcoholic drinks. Location is part of a strip mall with a good amount of parking. A Much-Needed Arrival in Braintree Braintree, with its growing Asian community, has been strangely barren of good ramen. The few attempts I have tried over the years have ranged from forgettable to regrettable (see review for Hakata Ramen in Quincy). So when Ganko Ittetsu Ramen opened in an obscure strip mall in Braintree, I walked in with reserved optimism. A Sunday afternoon visit did not inspire confidence. The parking lot was nearly empty, the kind of scene that makes you wonder if a place, no matter how good, can survive long enough to be discovered. Step inside and the mood changes. The interior is modern and clean, with natural light streaming through big windows. A long bar faces the open kitchen on one side, while neatly arranged tables fill the rest of the space. It feels deliberate, not slapped together, which is a good sign. I ordered their signature bowl: the Gankara Miso Ramen, a slightly spicy miso broth. It looked inviting, with toppings neatly placed and raw bean sprouts piled high, although the broth seemed a little scarce in comparison to the noodles and toppings. The noodles were cooked perfectly, firm and springy, exactly as they should be. The broth was thick, creamy, and unapologetically rich. Whether it owed its depth to hours of simmering bones or just a heavy hand with MSG, it worked. It was the kind of broth you want to linger over, though I wished there had been more of it. On broth and noodle alone, this was an easy four-star bowl, high praise in this region, where ramen has rarely climbed above mediocrity. But here is why it did not hit five. The soft-boiled egg, perfectly boiled with a slightly runny center, arrived cold, a serious misstep. Drop a fridge-cold egg into hot broth, and you break the spell. The chashu was another letdown: thin, lukewarm, more garnish than glory. Ramen deserves pork with presence, thick warm slices with a good layer of fat that melt into the broth, adding depth, richness, and weight. Here, it felt ornamental. I even paid three extra dollars for more chashu, only to be disappointed further. These flaws matter because ramen is more than the sum of its parts. The broth and noodles sang, but the cold egg, the forgettable chasu, and the meager portion of broth dragged the dish down. Still, I finished the bowl, satisfied, the kind of satisfied that has you already plotting a return visit. Ganko Ittetsu is not perfect, but it matters. In a region where ramen has often been overlooked, this establishment is a step forward. Let us hope the Southshore crowd embraces it, because if the restaurant survives, it might just inspire more serious ramen to follow. Final verdict: (4/5). Worth the trip, worth a second visit, and worth rooting for. read more

I really feel it is 2 stars but our server brought it to 3. Apps--Pork gyozas were ok, a bit oily, but ok. Nothing I would rush back for. Calamari was outstanding, possibly the best we've had. The ramen was just ok for 2 of us, great for 1, and so bad for another, they had to ask for a new one. One of us despises fish, explained that, was given a recommendation but when it came, they detected a mild fish taste. The other one simply had zero flavor which is silly since ramen is about a broth base with a depth of flavor. Nothing. Tasted like water and everyone at the table tasted it and agreed and this was a Sapporo type that is supposed to have great flavor from the way it is prepared. Anyhoo, thought we could doctor it up ourselves instead of bothering anyone so I asked a runner if he could just bring me a cup of the broth from the best ramen on the table so I could flavor it up. Came back, said he couldn't but gave me a side of what was basically liquid salt. If that's all it takes to make bad, flavorless ramen flavorful, what are we really doing here? To her credit, when the server came back to check on us, she apologized, offered a new one and said they really want us to enjoy our meals. Very very nice. They got a new one that was much better. Locals are loving this place and recommending it and there was a 30 minute wait to get in. Personally, I was disappointed in the ramen initially ordered but impressed with the service. The menu is refreshingly simple, offering a great selection of delicious ramen dishes. We tried the Karai Shoyu and Gotentsu Shoyu, both of which had rich, flavorful broths that perfectly complemented the perfectly cooked noodles. The Gyoza Chicken, (ran out of pork), was delicious with its crispy exterior and tender filling. Reminded us of the one we had in Japan. One of the best parts of the experience was how family-friendly the restaurant was. My kid loved the noodles, which were served in a separate bowl to make eating easier and less messy. The staff was exceptionally friendly, and the soup was served at the perfect temperature: not too hot to burn your mouth, but still fresh and comforting. The spicy Karai Shoyu had just the right amount of heat, making it it a enjoyable experience without overwhelming the taste buds. I have been eagerly waiting for Ganko to open its latest location on the South Shore and was thrilled to visit them during their soft opening. This location is a replacement for the one that closed in Providence RI (RIP ), and they have another smaller location in Brookline. This location has more tables than any of there other spots which makes it easier to come with a larger party. The service was super friendly and nice. We told them we were so excited that they were finally open and they were thrilled to hear that we've frequented all of their locations. They took our orders promptly and the tan tan ramen is just as good here as it is in Brookline. Springy ramen noodles with great texture and chew + a spicy sesame broth + a beautiful soft-boiled ajitama. It's everything I could hope and dream for on a cold winter's day. We're so happy you're finally open and can't wait to go back soon! P.S. A word to the wise to those complaining about waiting--if you show up an an off-peak time--say when they open at 5pm, then you can *most likely* bypass having to wait. If you show up to *any* hot restaurant in town without a reservation on a Friday at 6pm.....you're going to have to wait. You know when you see amazing IG reels and you think, wow this is a great place to take your significant other to on a nice Friday date night? This is not it. I hate giving one star reviews. I think in general, a restaurant needs to fail on every single count to get a one star review and I honestly felt that Ganko Ittetsu Ramen in Braintree was probably the worst bowl of ramen I've ever had in my life. The decor was the highlight of this restaurant. The mural was really cool, props if you can find Squirtle / Bulbasaur / Charmander on the mural. Anyways, it starts off having to wait 20 - 30 minutes to get a seat on a 6 PM on Friday. Totally fine, lines are good. It means the food tastes great that people are lining up for it (e.g. Yume). What happens afterwards was where I found appalling. We ordered immediately since we had 20 - 30 minutes waiting in line to decide which bowl of ramen to get. It took roughly 35 - 40 minutes for the ramen to come out, but the chicken kara-age came out within 5 - 10 minutes which was great, otherwise we'd be starving waiting for the ramen. Anyways the food: The chicken kara-age was probably the best part of the meal. I've definitely had better as the panko was literally falling off the chicken while I was picking it up. It didn't taste seasoned at all, like it wasn't marinaded. Most of the flavor had to come from the dipping sauce which was pretty good. I chose the "extra crispy" chicken and it was not crispy. I actually joked to my date and said that KFC fried chicken tasted way better than this kara-age and she agreed. Next the ramen: I thought presentation wise, it was the prettiest bowl of ramen I've had in a while (see pictures). Tons of toppings, meat, a gigantic portion of ramen, and I was super excited to dig in. We both put our spoons into the bowl and tasted the broth. It was horrendous. The broth was overly fatty which made it super heavy. Incredibly salty. The caramelized shoyu base in the Gantetsu Shoyu tried to do too much and the flavors didn't work together to make the bowl taste good. It felt medicinal almost. The egg / ajitama was cold. It just felt like a hard boiled egg that they marinated in soy sauce for 15 minutes. The ramen was the most disappointing. It was al dente in a bad way. It's like pulling out dried pasta at the 8 minute mark when it requires 10 minutes worth of cooking. The Gankara-Miso wasn't any better. Flavor was off and it just tasted wrong for ramen. My date didn't even finish half her bowl before calling it quits. I begrudgingly finished both our bowls and we wanted to leave to get some bubble tea to get the aftertaste out of our mouths. Service was pretty good otherwise. They were pretty attentive when I asked for the check to get out asap. In general, I think it might be due to growing pains as they're expanding and management probably can't QA both restaurants in Brookline and Braintree simultaneously. Maybe the waiters need more time to get trained / used to how things are running at the restaurant. Maybe they're stretched thin. Regardless, I would highly recommend skipping this restaurant regardless of the hype until maybe Summer '25. I genuinely from the bottom of my heart hope this place gets their act together, it's not going to last otherwise. I'd probably just come back to admire the mural, I'd pay to admire that over eating a bowl of their ramen again. read more

The best Ramen on the south shore by a long shot. Their Shoyu 1910 is one of the best bowls of Ramen I have ever had in MA. Mass is not known for good Ramen, so it was a treat to get a legit restaurant that serves one of the best bowls of Ramen around. They have some more modern types of Ramen that I haven't seen anywhere else, but sticking to the OG Shoyu 1910 is my goto. I have had about 75% of their ramen bowls and I keep going back to the original. Love this place, especially since the restaurant in Boston takes a couple hours to get a seat in the tiny restaurant. read more

Went on opening night to the new Ganko location in Braintree- space is bigger than their Brookline location with the same menu. I got the gantetsu shoyu ramen and it was good! Strong, salty flavors with fatty pork and shoyu broth along with those beautiful squiggly noodles. The one thing that I was disappointed in was that it came with a hardboiled egg, rather than the traditional ramen soft boiled egg. I hadn't been to the original location in a while but also noticed that they've changed their miso ramen- it seems they are using only chicken broth now, and they took out black garlic oil. Unfortunately it does not taste as good as they used to make it as the miso flavor was also too subtle. Still a great bowl of ramen though! read more

Reminds me of a real Japanese Ramen place in Japan except even more crowded. One of two Japanese servers greeted you with the Japanese way of saying welcome. And this place is buzzing.... Counter seatings are tight with maybe 6 spots. Then they only have about 4 tables inside and another 3 tables in the arcade/mall. Lines out the door. But get through in about ~15 to 20 minutes if you don't mind waiting. Really good ramen, good portion, spicy one is really spicy.... My son has been dining at this place for years. He loves this restaurant. A new location opened up and I decided to surprise him for his birthday. We all enjoyed ourselves. I enjoyed the food, but I think there are some areas for improvement, especially regarding the wait time. We arrived at 5:05 PM, right when the shop opened, and waited about 40 minutes for our meal. Considering it was a soft opening and they operate another location in Brookline, it seems there are opportunities to enhance the experience for guests. Here are a couple of suggestions: - I noticed there was only one high chair available. It might be beneficial to have at least five more, given the number of families who visit with infants. - I was surprised there weren't enough water glasses to all the chairs. It would help if there were more available, so guests aren't left waiting while glasses are being washed. These adjustments could really elevate the dining experience for everyone! read more

Less than 1 week of opening, two of us give them a try, at 5:30pm wait time is rough but for two people is less than 10 minutes since two groups were in front of us, only 3 servers(as host also) which is not enough to handle, sat down for over 10 minutes to place our order, my ramen came first alone then after 10 minutes later, my wife's + appetizer came, after my wife finished hers, my added on extra noodle came by itself. Definitely need some improvement on server skills of where is my whole order. Food: the noodle and soup base are very good, better than Waku Waku in Wollaston, chashu is quality cut, make sure add extra noodle for $2 is worth it. Selection is simple. If you order the karage chicken, bring it home and put it in the refridgerator and eat it cold later with the ponzu sauce, it is to die for.
