Toppu is an underrated hidden gem in Quincy! Recently opened and located in South Quincy, Toppu serves Japanese cuisine, ranging from ramen to sushi to omurice. First, we got the vegetable tempura to share. It was light and crispy, pairing well with the sauce they provided. My personal favorite was the sweet potato tempura! They also offer a terrific sushi combo special; 2 rolls for $15 or 3 rolls for $19.45. We got two 3-roll sushi combos and I personally opted for the Spicy Salmon, Spicy Scallop, and Shrimp Tempura rolls. My favorite roll was the Spicy Scallop roll, but all the rolls were amazing! The Spicy Scallop Roll is a MUST TRY here. The fish is so fresh and they give a lot of fish (perfect fish-to-rice ratio!). I love how the tempura was crispy in the sushi rolls as well. Overall, the quality of the food is solid too, and it's a great place to get some tasty sushi. There are probably about 8 tables max at Toppu, so it's a great spot to grab some takeout. They have their own parking lot and there's tons of street parking right in front of the restaurant. However, I definitely recommend dining in though! The restaurant is clean and cute. I love how they have Toppu dishes and glasses. The staff is also very friendly. One thing to note though (which is the only reason I'm giving Toppu 4 stars instead of 5) is that the service can be a bit slow when they're busy. It took some time to get our food and the bill. There was only one waiter working as well. I'm sure once they've been open for a while they'll figure it out! I recommend giving Toppu a try! I'm going to be honest with you all: I love ramen! After a disappointing experience at another place, I was worried. I was worried that I had fallen out of love with it, and/or that my palate changed for the worse. Still, me being me, when I discovered Toppu was open, I made it a point to stop in and give it a try. This time I was not afraid of the heat, and ordered the spicy "Volcano" Ramen. I've had my tail absolutely handed to me a handful of times, but I decided to trust the server that it wasn't crazy hot. Well, I am glad to report this was the best bowl of ramen I have had in a long time. It was so good, even though it has been less than 24 hours, I am tempted to go back and order the same thing again. This is one of those rare cases when I cannot think of anything negative to say. Yes, this means I have experienced perfection! I have to start with the broth: the broth had the perfect amount of salt, was very savory, and had a hint of extremely pleasant sweetness. True to the server's word, the heat level was on point. It was spicy enough to be noticeable, but not at all overpowering or overwhelming. The definition of pleasant heat. The Chashu was also great! It was grilled/roasted instead of being boiled, and it had a good balance of fatty and meaty. It had absorbed a little bit of sweetness from the broth which worked wonders with the protein. For the noodles, these were cooked to perfection with just a teeny tiniest amount of firmness for texture. The egg was also cooked perfectly. For the veggies: I love the use of bean sprouts and bamboo shoots for added freshness and crunch. The use of Nori (which I think also counts as a veggie?) was also excellent and added a new dimension to the bowl. Finally, for the service, other than me wishing that an empty water glass was noticed a bit faster, no complaints here. The service was kind, polite, and speedy. When it comes to the location, it is clean and bright! They did a truly lovely job renovating in rehabbing the Dunkin' Donuts that used to be here. With this, I am absolutely a fan of Toppu, and I'm going to make a point to stop in at least one more time before I leave the state for good! read more

Toppu - Volcano Tonkutsu (Spicy) - Ramen Near Me - Quincy, Massachusetts

Another new ramen shop was added to the Quincy Center location. The place is small, with around 6 to 8 tables. We got here before 6 p.m., so it wasn't busy. More people came as we were about to finish our meal. The waitress was friendly, but she made an error on our order, and the kitchen might forget the order as well when it's too busy. Affordable price, don't expect high quality. It is a place for quick meals, but they serve slowly once it gets too busy. We order the following: Classic Japanese Omurice with Katsu Deep Fried Pork served with Miso Soup--they forgot about the katsu and served the rice first. It does take a little longer to make the tornado eggs. Also, they forgot about the miso soup after they served the katsu, and we nearly finished the meal. Adding $3 for the katsu, it worth it (Did not take picture of the katsu and miso soup since they served separately) Toppu Tonkutsu - chewy ramen, but the chashu was too thick and soft. Even the meat and fat were balanced. The soup base was thick and too salty. Volcano Tonkutsu is spicy, chewy ramen. I wish the chashu were thinly cut, and the soup base was too thicker than the nonspicy version. My favorite was the egg. Too much msg, I drank whole cup of water. Volcano roll - not too much rice and huge shrimp tempura, too much tempera flake and little cooked scallop and crabstick. They added bonito which ruined the taste. Spider roll - nothing really special Eel avocado roll--but they gave us eel cucumber. We did not bother changing it since the chef took too long to make it. New sushi restaurant in Quincy that just opened. The place is modern and clean. The restaurant is small, there are about 5-8 tables. Food breakdown: Volcano Tonkutsu (Spicy): It had a slight kick of spice. The ramen was surprisingly pretty good as I usually dislike ramen cause it is overly salty or the broth is way too thick. I would honestly order this again. Spider Roll: Crispy soft shelled crabs. Flavor was decent. Alaskan Roll: Rice was a bit cold (this was for all the maki rolls ordered). Sushi rice should be room temperature or slightly warm. They used the perfect amount of rice. The fish was so little, I was honestly just tasting the avocado and cucumber. Eel avocado: Again very little fish. Roll was mid. Takoyaki: Over cooked, takoyaki was very dark in color. There is a small piece of octopus. Missing scallions and ginger. Also takoyaki needs more sauce. Overview--I would stick with the ramen and maybe just get a roll if you are craving for sushi as well. The maki rolls are pretty average. My partner and I ordered a classic Japanese omurice combo w miso soup (plus katsu pork and curry sauce), takoyaki, karaage don (plus black pepper sauce), and any 3 rolls (spicy tuna, spicy salmon, eel avocado) - TASTE: 4/5 - twas better than anticipated! Both sauces, the curry sauce for the omurice and the black pepper sauce for the karaage, were super tasty. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon were actually seasoned and spicy, unlike other places TEXTURE: 5/5 - the omurice was more of a flat tornado-style egg vs. rice wrapped in egg or a fluffy egg cut open to reveal its runny center. Still enjoyed it though, plus the crunchy katsu pork and breaded takoyaki PRICE: 4/5 - total came to $76, more than I expected SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - satisfied us for dinner and still had leftovers SERVICE: 3/5 - ordered online via Chowbus and our food was ready/on time when we arrived 20min later. Inside was cute, decorative and has the feel of street vendor. Pricing is comparable to other venues. Sashimi and sushi: tasted fresh but wasn't anything unique to write about. For the Chefs Sashimi platter it came with a tuna roll, we requested it to be spicy tuna and they had to up-charge $1 for that. Usually other venues would just count it as an easy switch, not sure why they up-charge. The nigiri was also odd, they use the mayo as the paste to glue the fish to the rice, I'm used to wasabi being used. I don't like the mayo as glue. Ramen: passable, I didn't try it but the kids liked it. The soup looked creamy and the noodles looked on point. The charsui was tender and juicy. Mochi ice cream: 1 order comes with 2. Save your money and go to Hmart down the street, that's most likely where it came from. Service: was fine, but the waitress didn't look happy to be there. Overall, the quality and price doesn't beat the competitions down the street. Tip, the location of the restaurant is confusing. If you see that big Dunkin' Donuts sign, it is there! I'm glad I decided last minute to come try toppu after driving by 4x a week. When we walked in it was nice and bright and clean, the decor was refreshing. The staff is welcoming and attentive. The menu was easy to read. My niece picked a Katsu ramen, the deep fried pork was huge, crispy and thick. My husband got the roasted duck ramen and added chasu. I ordered the twice fried ribs, it was crispy from the 2nd batter coating. I wished it had more of the sticky brown sauce. I loved the fall of the bone meat. For sushi I got the red dragon roll, it was very filling, but lacked something. For me the portions were pretty big, I was able to share and taste their ramen. I had the worst experience today with the people at this restaurant. I had an incident with my daughter and had to pull over in an emergency. I needed napkins as she had vomited all over herself and she was standing outside in nothing but a T-shirt in 16° weather. I asked the woman if I could please have a handful of napkins so I could wipe her off and get her back into the car so I could get her home. I even offered to pay for the napkins. She handed me 2 tiny napkins and told me to leave. She was mean and rude and had no human decency about her. I would never eat at a restaurant that would treat people so unkind. read more

This was the first time I heard of omurice and it was labeled as a signature item. I didn't realize it was nothing more than just rice with omelette on top. I got it with the curry sauce and pork katsu. Overall it was good and not bad for $20, but I wish the portion sizes would be a little bigger. read more

I did not like the Katsu Ramen. There was not enough broth when my bowl of ramen arrived. Looked like a sad bowl of ramen. The bamboo shoot did not taste like regular bamboo shoots. It tasted very funky. Had to spit it out. The fish cake doesn't look like regular fish cake. The pink dye coloring was very off so I did not try that. My friend ordered Classic Japanese Omurice and she did not make a dent on her plate LOL she said the egg was over cooked. We also tried takoyaki and it was alright. Just ordered here for the first time and it was SO good. Best tasting spicy tuna roll I've had in years -- just super fresh and full of flavor. Teriyaki and miso soup also were very good. One suggestion I have for the chef is to add more specialty rolls that don't have tempura.
