Request for their chilli flakes and Add to your liking to bring the fish to another level. The old country pad Thai is also very good. I've been ordering takeout from Thai Bar Shi for a while now, but finally stopped by for dinner at the restaurant, so I figured it was time for a review. This place is no doubt one of the best sushi spots in the immediate area, I only docked it a star because it has a little ways to go before it can compete with some of the Boston spots I'm used to. One of the reasons we love this place is because they do a good job with both the sushi and all of the other Thai and Japanese dishes, which is perfect for when not everyone in your group is in the mood for raw fish. It can be a little slow, but that's just because it's small and popular, but everyone who works there is really nice and accommodating. Some of my personal favorites from the menu are the Weymouth Cowboy Roll, Hungry Tuna Roll, Tom Yum Noodle soup, and Pad See Ew. All the Nigiri I've tried have been pretty tasty, too. I also saw some drool worthy handrolls going by throughout the meal, I'm definitely going to have to try those the next time I visit. Maybe they'll push me over to that 5-star rating. The pad thai is kind of unique, it's a much skinnier noodle than I'm used to, but the flavor is decent. We also tried the Hotate Hokkaiyaki (which is literally on fire underneath), and while it was good, I felt like you're pretty much paying for the theatrics when it's mostly a pile of crab stick. I also think their special roll menu could use a little more variety. It's a lot of different variations of a similar shrimp tempura roll. Overall, I would 100% recommend this place. Delicious, cute designs, fast services and had a great time. We got two handrolls, a sushi roll, mackerel 3pc sashimi and a bashi cold noodle. The handrolls were fantastic, my favorite is the yellow tail with uni, but the salmon one is also good, just boring compared to the yellow tail. I love the sauce that you squeeze into the hand rolls, it added a pop of umami flavor. The roll gan airport roll was fantastic as well, the crispy rice bottom topped with avocado, tomato, and tuna/salmon was just a great balance of flavor and texture. Super delicious! The bashi cold noodles were good but wouldn't order again. The noodles wasn't cold, it was warm, the broth is just a very simple beef broth, the flavors are very subtle. There was a generous portion of meat and the jalapeños definitely adds a kick of spice. But overall, the flavor of the broth was too bland for my liking. My most recent visit at Thai Bar Shi was tonight. I really do hate to give low star reviews but the lack of professionalism from the staff today was unacceptable and unwarranted. We ordered a bunch of rolls (NBA, caterpillar, dragon, sashimi & sushi combo, and more) as well as hot foods such as boat noodle, hokkaiyaki, etc. Tonight, they did end up getting busy; lots of takeout, deliveries, & dine ins, however, that is no excuse for the passive aggressiveness and plain rudeness that our server and one of the other workers at the front projected to us. What happened: All of the dishes we ordered arrived to our table and we had one more dish we were waiting on (sashimi & sushi combo 6 nigiri 6 sashimi). It had been some time that we waiting so we decided to just ask our server, when she wasn't busy serving the other tables, if it was still coming or if it was forgotten, that is also fine no problem, just take it off the bill. We were simply just wondering, as it was getting late. She responded snarkily, stating that it's coming but ITS BUSY !!! Mind you, our waters also had not been filled in a while at this point... all glasses were empty. We're understanding that it can be overwhelming when it's busy. What I cannot understand is the attitude when we asked nicely about a dish that hadn't arrived in a noticeable time. If the dish was forgotten, it's totally okay, I get it, it happens. The second instance of rudeness we experience during this visit occurred when we were leaving. We asked if we could get a bag for our leftovers and the guy at the front got annoyed but reluctantly went to grab us a bag. Then we realized that some soy sauce packets would be nice to pair with the leftover sushi, so we asked if we could please get a packet or two of soy sauce. His response to this was "Anything else?!" in an obvious angry tone + looked like he was fuming. So, he came back with the soy sauce and would not let go of the packets to hand to us and said "YOU'RE WELCOME. " I'm not sure what was going on today at Thai Bar Shi, but it honestly rubbed me the wrong way. The last time I visited, I wasn't the most satisfied with my experience, but that was regarding the food quality. This experience was a total disappointment overall. Not once did we actually complain to/about our server. We were very calm all the way through our meal and we tried to be as nice and understanding of why they would treat us this way. Wow just simply amazing!!! We had a wonderful foodie ladies night! Food is unbelievable fresh and delicious, service is super friendly, they were super busy with dine in and take out. It was busy inside but not noisy. Our servers are super nice like your big sister and little brother, very attentive and checked on us many times with wonderful smiles, making our night even better. We all amazed with our Lady server's memory, applauding for that, we got around 25 items with 3 separate checks and she don't even need to write down and got them all right! Stopped by here earlier for dinner and the food was delish! The restaurant has a nice warm/cozy vibe with about 7 small tables (2-4 ppl per table) and serves a combination of Thai and Japanese dishes. Some highlights from the meal: Thai Boat Noodles Soup ($13.95) - WOW, WOW, WOW. This might be the best boat noodle soup that i've had in Massachusetts. The soup was aromatic, addictingly tangy, spicy, savory, and mildy sweet all in one. They also thickened the soup with pork blood (the traditional way like they do it in Thailand) which gave the soup more umph, umami, and a warm richness! I also really enjoyed the awesome bounciness of their homemade pork meatballs in the soup! Anago eel nigiri ($9 per piece) - The anago was ginormous and literally 10 inches long. It was definitely the biggest nigiri that i've ever seen, but remember, bigger is not always better! While this felt like a good deal, i thought that the fish skin could've benefited from a better outer crisp. After taking my first bite, it kind of made me feel like the chef was in the process of trying to give the skin a good crisp but quit halfway. O-toro fatty tuna belly ($9 per piece) - YUMS! The o-toro was really good and tasted even better than many of the more expensive places that i've been to in Boston. The toro was super fresh and literally melted in my mouth (yay!). This made me very happy and was a great way to start the weekend. Sushi rice (negative -$1): Dun dun dun............this is the only thing that i didn't quite enjoy at dinner today. The sushi rice was unfortunately not edible at all :(. The rice felt like some kind of weird mushy gooey rice pudding mix which really distracted me from being able to fully enjoy the sushi. My hope is that this was just an isolated incident on their end. Would've given the restaurant a 5 star review if it weren't for the rice. Got some sushi, and pad Thai takeout for lunch today. Put the order in at 11:30am when they started taking orders and it took about an hour for the food to be ready as they were very busy with takeout. The pad Thai portion size was really good but it could use a little more flavor. We also got the Weymouth roll and spicy tuna/salmon combo and it was ok not much flavor on the sushi either. Seasoned so perfectly you'll try to eat quietly- then the slurping starts! The wife and I wanted to try a new sushi spot and since we don't venture down south we decided to give Thai Bar shi a try. It's in a little mini plaza next to H&R Block. We came here at night and you could tell this one the only place open in the plaza. All the cars were parked around the only lit area where the restaurant is. When we first sat down we noticed there was a steady amount of take out orders coming through at 9pm on a Saturday night (they close at 10). The food overall was good, but like what another Yelp review said it's a little salty. Got the tuna bomb which was very nice. I'm not sure if it was eel sauce or just some soy sauce on the tuna but it made it a little salty. I think if there was maybe a thin layer of sushi rice or crisp sushi rice, it would've offset the salt. The wag green roll was good. It was something different where I'm used to a shrimp tempura roll or California roll being the main component of a special roll but using seaweed salad as the filler gave each bite a nice seaweed crunch! Usually it's a multi biter when you want a little bit of everything with some seaweed salad. The country pad Thai was very savory. Unlike most pad Thai's, the tamarind was overpowered by fish sauce. It had a very nice spice to it, albeit mild. If you can't handle spicy food, I wouldn't suggest it because it was subtle but could tell it was spicy. Like the other dishes it was a little salty, if the kitchen was a little less heavy handed it would've been a great dish! We plan on coming again as there were a number of things we wanted to try from their Thai menu. Thai Bar Shi has been on my list of places to try for months, and I'm so glad I tried it recently! With so many Sushi places in the South Shore Area, I have to say this is my new favorite. Their sushi is super fresh and well priced. We tried lots of items when I visited, including Basketball, Ankimo sashimi, the NBA roll, Sushi and Sashimi Combo, and the Uni Sashimi. My favorite item was the NBA roll! I highly recommend it. I think the NBA roll came with 8 hefty pieces. They definitely do not skimp out on the fish in this roll either. I also really enjoyed the Sushi and Sashimi Combo. They gave us thick slices of fish, making it worth the price. The fish was also incredibly fresh, which was a major plus. The restaurant is located in a mini plaza with plenty of parking, so parking here is not an issue. The service was also great, as the staff are friendly and bring out dishes in a reasonable time. We ordered sushi and curry. Quality of the fish was excellent. The Ootaro was succulent, soft and melt in your mouth delicious. The Uni from California was sweet and buttery. Every dish we had was well balanced and presented well. The least likable dishes were the crispy spicy tuna roll and the Roll Gan Airport maki. Crispy Spicy Tuna was passable, but it was just tempura flakes on top of the maki. Tasted fine. The Airport maki was not exactly a maki... it reminded me of an open faced eggplant parm instead of a maki roll. Visiting my friend in Quincy and they brought me here. This is their go to sushi spot. It's your standard sushi spot plus some Thai food. Unfortunately this time I didn't get to try their Thai food so I can only comment on the sushi side. The sushi was good and tasted fresh. I really suggest their crab rangoon, it was so yummy and different from the other rangoons I've had in the past. On the menu it is described as crispy wonton filled with cream cheese, crabmeat, DRIED CRANBERRIES, and vegetables, served with sweet chili sauce. Such a hidden gem that I found when I went here two years ago for my birthday for the first time and ever since I keep coming back for 4 things. Having visited about 3x, I think it's fair to say that this place is the biggest hidden gem in the South Shore. I'm loving the fact that it offers so much variety that it feels like a full service izakaya but then, POW, they also have a comprehensive Thai menu and mostly everything we've tried has been so finger licking good. Faves: Tuna bomb - definite must-have if you like tuna and avocado. I don't really fancy it when the tuna is mixed with soy (too salty) so I liked this preparation better. Khao Soi - This is their Thai curry made with half crispy and half soft egg noodles. So flavorful I couldn't get enough of it. It's a house novelty dish and I've never seen it offered anywhere else -- highly highly recommended. Super Bowl - Another favorite; it has a similar taste profile to the Tuna Bomb and definitely worth it as a table share item. Hotate Hokkaiyaki on Fire - MUST see my video. It was the best Hotate I've EVER tried. Presentation delivered the WOW factor as well. Everyone needs one of these as their starters. Okay: Basil fried rice with seafood - a good staple but doesn't hold a candle next to the Khao Soi as an entree choice. Finally, hats off to offering takowasa. It's a modest dish but so hard to find in many places outside of an izakaya. All in all, 5+ stars and its permanently on my list as a local fave. read more

As far as local places go, I'd say Thai Bar Shi has definitely been full of surprises. However, it's good not great. The soft shell crab was easily the best thing they had that night. Crunchy with a little give and the jalapeños giving it that nice little bite. The sushi though was a little bit lackluster. Sure it tasted fresh but the cuts were oddly thick. Their speciality makis were interesting enough. The Harry Potter maki was especially inventive pairing shrimp tempura with their recurring jalapeños which seems like a war crime but I assure you it works. I would not order this personally but just for them again if I was going to go back. *Fatty tuna Otoro - dude this was like SO GOOD! melts in your mouth type of good. worth every darn penny! i'm missing this as we speak! *Larb flavor fries- its good but definitely all of their other items are more memorable and more worth the calories. *Hotate On Fire- goodness i so recommend this! this was super tasty! i knew it was good by seeing the number of take outs they had. they had so many ppl come pick up their orders. customer service was good and place was clean. If you are a local then this is a spot that you must check out and go to over and over again. The place is small, probably could have five big tables of four. It's definitely a Thai Japanese fusion kinda of restaurant. Vibe is like street food, casual dining. Service is good and fast. Monk fish liver special appetizer comes with four thick slices, served with scallions and small diced red onion, Japanese kelps/ seaweed, vinaigrette sauce. If you eat the liver alone, it didn't have much flavor. I have had monk fish liver somewhere else, those liver has to be marinade with sake and soy to make them more flavorful. So this appetizer is only ok. Salmon salad with some Thai dipping sauce. Not sure what the name is. Again, the salmon quality isn't very good. They don't seem very fresh either, they tasted bland alone. They were thin sliced salmon bedded with chopped iceberg lettuce. The green Thai dressing is garlicky spicy and with fish sauce. Delicious sauce. Torched sweet shrimps with black tobiko and the shrimp head are deep fried like tempura style. They are ok. Torch foi gras nigiri comes with a good size foi gras. The rice was too mushy. But the seared foi gras itself was delicious!!! Worth getting it! Ikura with quail eggs nigiri- $2 each to add the quail eggs. They could have put more Ikura in it. Quail eggs tastes creamy. Toro nigiri looks fresh. Good texture and sweet to them. It's Chu toro quality not the fatty fatty type where it just melt in your mouth. However mushy rice again here!!! Weymouth cowboy/ yellowtail maki/touchdown maki/ hungry dragon are the sushi rolls that I order. They have good ingredients! But rice tastes so mushy, the texture isn't right. Lots of sauces overpowering the taste of the fish. The rice definitely needs to cook with less water and the ratio of vinegar and sake and sugar have to be more precise. Overall is a C-. Needs tons of improvement on getting the sushi rice right. Price is a little overpriced. read more
