Street parking around here can be a headache. There's a small lot behind the restaurant I sometimes try. The inside of Hakata Ramen is tight and can get pretty busy, but the vibe is what you'd expect for the area. The staff is honestly the best part. They are welcoming and move fast. I have been here a handful of times and it is a reliable choice for comfort food. They have these daily bento specials with ramen, sushi, and appetizers that look like a great deal. I tried, but they are intriguing. The main downside is the broth quality compared to the price. There are definitely more authentic ramen spots in the city if you are a purist. You can tell the base is not a homemade tonkatsu broth, which is a bit of a letdown for what they charge. The restaurant is connected to other small restaurants with a few tables and is popular with takeout. The building has some parking in the back and connects through the kitchen. The service is great and our server refilled our waters often. Something cool they have here is weekday combos. On Thursday, I got the combo that included a small Philadelphia roll, beef rice and spicy pork ramen. The ramen is regular sized with the other items app sized. The food at Hakata Ramen in Waltham is pretty good. My best friend and I visited on Saturday afternoon, and the restaurant wasn't too busy. There were plenty of tables available when we dropped in, and we were seated promptly. We both ordered the lunch trio special. I ordered a spicy salmon, a spicy tuna, and mango and cucumber roll, accompanied by a miso soup. The ambiance included aesthetically pleasing serving plates and bowls, as well as adorable photos of animals on the walls. The mango and cucumber roll was noteworthy, but the tuna and salmon were somewhat salty. We came for the ramen, dipped into the rolls and poke and left happy. One by one friendly servers popped our dishes out with pride. The crunch on the soft shell crab in our spider roll was on point. My poke bowl evoked a bit of the freshness of Maui. I got the bowl loaded with everything because well-- why not? The ramen was steaming -- not too spicy -- but flavorful and filling for a mid-afternoon lunch. Down home Japanese on display here. Would love for them to spruce up the pictures of the food adorning the walls -- glass pictures or frames would go a long way here. Is Hancock the Dorchester of the South? It's been a few years since I've been back up in this area and had a chance to go to Hakata Ramen. It was everything and even better than I remembered. The vibe is a pretty small Homie type of place with about 8 to 10 tables, but the food here is outstanding. I started off with the pork dumplings, which were delicious and ended with the spicy Ramen and added some Chachu. The broth was so flavorful so good. The place is underwhelming but the staff members were very hardworking and always checked on everybody. The photos didn't look appetizing but I thought it would still be okay. However, a picture is worth a thousand words and in it, the truth. It was very mediocre. The food reminded me of something you'd get at a fast food joint at a food court. The ramen was a bit sparse with the toppings but came with a garlicky broth that I liked. If you don't like garlic, go with a different broth. There were 3 pieces of sushi. It tasted fine. Nothing memorable but get the job done. I wasn't a big fan of the katsu don though. The curry was a bland and the katsu was soggy (probably because it was takeout and been sitting there for awhile). This ramen is my go to because of how comforting and rich the broth is. The toppings are also of decent quality and pretty delicious. It's sort of a well balanced dinner with greens, 3 slices of chashu pork, egg, and of course the noodles. The noodles were thick and wavy but not too heavy. Came for lunch on 7/31, 2 bowls of ramen for $39 after tax+tip. Stopped in on a hot day after playing 2 hours of tennis outside, which was probably a good start to build some anticipation since anything liquid and salty would be amazing. First impression: it's kinda hot in here. I get that it's 85 and sunny outside, and you have a whole kitchen in the back, but... it's a little bit uncomfortably hot. Lots of different things on the menu (big appetizer section was intriguing), including many different sushi/sashimi/ramen options. I definitely felt a bit rushed to order, way too many options for the amount of time I was given, and ended up seeing a few neat things on the wall/at other tables after I'd ordered. Anyways, I went with the spicy miso pork bone ramen. The ramen soup base is actually quite good (very garlic-y!) but I only know that because my partner got the non-spicy version (it had a pork katsu on the side that was great). Mine was DOUSED in chili oil (and it's actually fairly spicy chili oil too). Not sure if this is the intention or how the ramen is traditionally presented, but I've certainly never had quite that much chili oil in my food - if you're one of the people who can't get enough chili oil you might have enjoyed it more, but it was too much for me. Char siu was average - had a good char on it but not nearly fatty enough of a piece, and it was cut really thinly, would have preferred 2 thicker pieces for the more satisfying bite instead of 3 thinner ones. At nearly $20 per bowl after tax and tip, not sure I'd be back even though my partner's bowl was better than mine, there is pretty stiff competition very near by for noodle soups and there's many better ramens closer to Cambridge/Boston. read more

Even though I've gotten food here twice, takeout both times. First time I got the Maki combo for lunch, and second time around the Spicy Maki Combo. No ramen yet, though I'm definitely not against it in the future. Overall the sushi is good, and better than supermarket quality. The rice was of high quality, and the roll was more or less balanced. No issues with the fish either. Now, out of what I'd ordered, even for spicy lovers, I would go for the Maki Combo as there is a nicer assortment of sushi there. In other words, you can actually taste a difference between the three kinds of rolls. The regular combo has a little heat, don't you worry. It's just not in every piece. This is where this place's weakness comes through. In the Spicy Maki Combo, the rolls looked the same and tasted the same. It wasn't until I look a few apart that I noticed the fish inside was different. The piece was a little towards the smaller side, perhaps if it was a tad bigger a difference would be more noticeable. Hakata works great as a workday lunch or dinner when you're too lazy to cook. I'll put it to you this way, if you want to treat yourself, this could work. If you want to "treat yo self" or otherwise celebrate something, there could be better options. Prices are reasonable and competitive for what you get and the area. Oh, and the small miso soup and green salad are unmemorable (other than the delightful dressing) but a nice touch nonetheless. I almost gave three stars, but trying to justify it all I could come up with is the homogeneity of the Spicy combo. Otherwise, this place meets expectations, which is a solid four stars. read more

Pretty solid ramen for takeout, in an area without a lot of great ramen options. I tried two ramens, the Yakiniku and the Teriyaki chicken ramen, and while both were very tasty and satisfying meals I felt like both were just a few steps away from the authentic ramen I've had before on the West Coast. Maybe it's the broth, maybe it's how the noodles were cooked (granted this was takeout so they can't control how much you heat or reheat at home and maybe it was my own fault). The half eggs in the ramen are hard boiled, which just felt weird to me... Also was very curious about the potato wrapped shrimp--pretty good!! I got R9 which consisted of pork based broth soup topped pork katsu, black mushroom, egg, bean sprouts, bamboo shoot, and spinach for $13.95. I also added a side of corn for an additional cost. Here, you'd have to pay a few dollars for each additional side, so not worth it IMO. Their eggs are also slightly overcooked to the point where part of the yolk begins to grey. Most ramen places I've gone to give you a soft boiled egg. I could've overlooked this but my boyfriend and I each only received half of an egg, which I thought was strange and honestly kind of cheap. The pork was alright. I received a generous portion of it in my R2, but the R10 only had two slices. The customer service was below average for me. After the server gave us our dishes, we were never checked up on again until we were finished. Even then, I think they only came over and saw us because their phone rang so they were getting up anyway. It's a bit pricey for what you get.
