This was my first stay at the gage. I must say the check in staff could have been friendlier. After a (very) long drive we were turned away because we were 10 minutes early for check in. The room was adorable (and smelled lovely) though there was some trash that blew in from the road on our patio and something spilled and left in the entry way of our room. Parts of the hotel were under construction, but it didn't affect our stay. We visited the gardens across the street and local shops, it was mostly a very charming experience.

We stayed here for a long weekend to enjoy Big Bend National Park based on a recommendation from a friend. We liked the idea of getting the rustic western experience of Marathon, Texas while ensuring we had a comfortable bed to sleep in after a day of hiking. The historic charm of this historic hotel is a neat experience and the staff was all friendly and welcoming each time we'd come and go. A few things to note: there isn't much else in Marathon outside of the hotel and restaurants associated with the Gage. Just plan accordingly for what you need for your visit as you won't find a Walmart or traditional grocery store. Also, the drive from Marathon to the national park entrance is an hour and you'll find yourself driving at least another 30 minutes or more from that point to get to the key points of the park. One of the perks of Marathon's remoteness is the amazing views of the stars at night!

I'd say strong 4. Let me make it simple. There are several awesome places to stay in this town and Gage is one of them. Chances are if you are coming this way you want to stay in a historic hotel. Or at least have an authentic west Texas experience. Stay here! Go!!!

5/5 A great place to stay in Marathon, Texas if you're looking for a retreat. It has a spa, gym for use, outdoor pool, and firepits, attached restaurant is called 12 Gage and Bar: Buffalo Bar. We stayed in the Shepard house, the historic house behind the hotel suites. It had nice rooms(spacious), the only downside is that there was no attached bathroom, and it was outside of the room, down the hall. The hotel is beautifully designed and clean. They give you a keurig coffee machine and free water bottles in the room! The location is excellent as it is down the street from food, and drinks. It is about an hour and 30 minutes from Big Bend National Park, this is not the place to stay if you're wanting to transport to the park; I'd recommend closer towns.

This place seldom disappoints when you're in Marathon. To those who don't know Marathon is a tiny little town at the turn to Big Bend. There isn't much there, at all. Fortunately, the Gage hotel was restored years back and had been a destination for all. I can't vouch for the single rooms because I have always stayed in one the casitas on the property. However, they are always nicely detailed and clean. The lobby is totally west Texas, warm and inviting. The restaurant and bar (12 Gage) are the finishing touches. The food is always spot on and the wait staff is helpful and pleasant. They have their hands full with customers who have had one or two extra Ranch Waters (guilty) and do so with a smile. The quail options are a favorite for all of us who stay at the Gage. Book a room in advance because they fill up fast.

    Beautiful Casa Jardin

On a recent stay, we reserved the Casa Jardin suite and couldn't have been happier. The check in was flawless and quick. We then drove over to the gardens and our Casa. It was unbelievably romantic, beautiful, and enjoyable. It felt like we had the entire gardens to ourselves. The room was huge and the bathroom incredible. Right out the porch were distant views on one side and a lovely entry to the phenomenal Gardens. This is just one special place that you should treat yourself and your significant other to.

    The incredible Buffalo Bar.

I'd heard many great accounts of the Gage before I finally got the chance to visit and stay. The history of the architect is fascinating, and the hotel resembles several other notable west Texas hotels. The lobby was classy and inviting, and the staff incredibly professional and friendly. Our room was perfect. The gym had absolutely anything you could need, and the pool and grounds were immaculate. The hotel bar is fantastic, and there are several other watering holes a stone's throw away. To top it off, for a cat lover, there is a resident feline named "Squeak" who seemed to take to me. This place is truly legendary, and we would love to visit again.

Big West Texas Sky... better than TV

Really enjoy this place! Out in the middle of Nowhere West Texas, it's a perfect jumping off place to visit Big Bend and a even better place to land after spending a day visiting the Park. The place has a real cool bar called the White Buffalo, and a fantastic restaurant called the 12 Gage. Try the Quail and the Rib Eye and you will not be disappointed but my dining companions had the fish and they were happy too! Go figure! No TV's, but with the pool, the bar, the restaurant, the open fire pit to visit with other travelers and of course the big sky, you don't miss the tube! It's every Texans obligation to visit Big Bend at least once and this place makes it a lot more fun!

On my motorcycle, Marathon was just going to be a stop in my journey. I had booked a single night at this hotel, just for a crash and an early start the following day! In the wee hours of the morning, greeted by a beautiful sunrise, I set out to leave and my motorcycle decided that the cold had been too much for the battery to crank my bike. I needed a jump! I was waiting around the office, and when the first hotel employee arrived, she told me the caretaker would be arriving soon, and he would help me. A second employee arrived, on her bicycle, and she went more step, texting the caretaker than someone was in needs of help. The caretaker joined me shortly after. Assessed the situation with me, and went back to his lodge to pick up his truck and jump cables. That sense of authenticity is perhaps most charmingly embodied in the guest experience itself: upon check-in, visitors are handed an actual metal key. No plastic cards. No digital apps. Just the satisfying weight of tradition in your palm. My stay in a Balcony King room revealed generous proportions rarely found in contemporary boutique properties. The suite unfolded into a separate living area, creating a sense of residential calm rather than transient lodging. With a limited menu, we presumed anything ordered would be rather scrumptious. We decided to order the chicken fried steak along with the green chili bacon burger. We shared our dishes per, swapping plates half way through our respective meals. Our consensus was identical and is as follows: The green chili bacon burger was indeed the superior dish. In fact, it was quite delicious! The chicken fried steak was good as well, but the portion was a bit small and the sides were nothing to write home about. Was the burger worth $18? Probably not, but to be fair, I'm not sure that any burger is deserving of such a price. That being said, it was indeed a tasty burger if you don't mind the price. Was the chicken fried steak worth $20? Certainly not. Truly an average dish with small portions, we both feel the decision was regrettable at such a price point. In conclusion, with a juicy burger, an average chicken fried steak, and a limited menu with overpriced entrees, the Harvard Hotel receives a 3 star rating.
