I took a little trip with my two dogs and this place was advertised as "pet friendly," and not only were my dogs allowed, when they found out I had them, I came back after a night of hiking to a dog bed in my room. BEWARE! The online photos are fake and the reviews are bogus! Do not stay here! Office upon arrival---lights off, no AC, a "night of the living dead" person didn't even speak, so I said my name. He went outside, came back with a key and the only 2 words he ever uttered were "cabin 2". Cabin 2 met us with a plunger by the front door. Inside was quite a nightmare. No way to ask for another room as the place was closed at this point. Bathroom door broken--has a gate latch that doesn't close all the way, floors filthy and covered in sticker burrs, spiders in the bathroom, the soaps and shampoos were obviously refilled-not new-and dirty and stuck to the glass shelve. The TV was falling off the wall, there was a hole in the front door and the back of the door was covered in some sort of dirt (bug dirt?). Multiple spider webs in room. The positives were the fridge and microwave were clean and operational, the bed wasn't really comfy but seemed to be clean, and the AC worked. We were immediately looking for other hotel rooms even though we had prepaid for 2 nights. Unfortunately--April in this area is a big time for visiting Big Bend, so there was nothing to be had. We seriously considered sleeping in the truck... The reviews and photos I saw before booking sure look good, but they are very deceptive. Buyer beware!! read more

Best night of sleep ever! The rooms are quaint and perfect with that West Texas feel. I sat in the courtyard and looked at the stars. My cabin had a full coffee maker and Big Bend Coffee Roasters coffee. They provide a basket packed full of tea, coffee creamer, sugars, as well as coffee mugs. If there's anything else you need, you can go to the kitchen after hours and help yourself. There is a microwave and a mini fridge for your convenience. It's super cute. However, you need to know what you're getting. It was built in 1950. And has the same amenities. Teensy weird set up for a bathroom- probably we get two rooms now that used to have a shared bathroom. So, now there is a living space and a bedroom. The bedroom was nice and clean, comfy beds, decent pillow options. The tvs were weirdly hung with wires everywhere and just... poorly done. Plenty of lamps from the fifties with wires going down the walls. The shower was not terrible- lots of hot water, just hi g low and low water pressure. The high way noise is loud, but they know that, and offer ear plugs on the teensy side table thing. The art work is... interesting. We got courtyard room, you can check the video out. I'm on the front porch of our little cottage now, enjoying the awesome weather, good coffee, and bird chirping, even if there's cars whizzing by beyond the cedar fence. I enjoyed it! Oh, there's a fire pit that others enjoyed until about 10 pm, and we could hear them easily Inside, but not a huge deal. They went in or got quieter around 10:30ish. I do think I recommend it, but I don't think I'll stay here again. I prefer modern amenities and nicer finishes. Chipping and peeling paint just isn't something I expect when I'm paying these prices. read more

I recently stayed in this lodge on 10 November 2025, and so did a friend of mine in a different room. Your photos on your website are very enticing and not accurate to what we encountered during our stay. So much so, that we cancelled our reservation for 14 November 2025. Our room was musty smelling, the light in the bathroom did not work, the window heat/AC unit was horrendously loud and the temperature controls were almost non-existent. The door frame was damage and looked like it had been broken into numerous times. The wiring for the lights over the beds definitely was not to code, and the light shorted every time the light moved. My friend's room was even worse. The bathroom sink leaked all over the floor and smelled of mold. He tried to find other accommodations and there was no other in town on that night. He even contemplated sleeping in his truck rather than stay at your lodge. We tried calling you at your phone number multiple times to get these issues addressed and no one had the courteousness to return a call of a paying customer. Sad service indeed. Needless to say, I will be posting this review on multiple internet review sites to warn other potential future patrons about this lodge in Alpine TX. read more

We arrived and the front staff was very sweet. The city and location was great! Very cute buildings and decor. I wanted to try something different and unique than a regular hotel. However, I don't think this was worth $140 for one night. The room had trash left over under the bed from previous stays and mold in the shower. I understand it is an old building and that can happen, but I feel like that should be dealt with before allowing guests in the room. I had high hopes for this stay but was left feeling like I could have just stayed at a regular hotel for better price, cleaner room, and more space. read more

We love this place! It's a funky old motor lodge with comfy beds and a wonderful ambiance. Guests have access to a full kitchen as well as charcoal grills stationed around the courtyard. 3.5 stars This place is eclectic.... it was one of the few places in town that had reasonable prices and an extra suite (we were sleeping 2 and 3 people). The lady at the front desk was friendly and had apologized that she was on another call when we got there. The front office had a few gift items, T-shirts, fair trade chocolate, and booze for sale. The bathroom was unfortunately the size of a small closet, with no where to hang anything or set anything down (with a little touch of mildew in the shower). Also, there were no plug in's in there, so if you wanted to curl your hair, you'd better do it in the laundry room. We couldn't get the TV to pick up any channels (due to ongoing construction at the lodge). The best part were the open views and the firepit in the courtyard surrounded by twinkling, colorful lights. The bad part? We didn't bring any s'mores (of course, with how wet the wood had become it was a wonder that we had been able to actually light the fire). 2021 #22 read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! It's super clean. My room was spotless and the sheets/bed was extremely comfortable. The staff was kind and helpful...and very chill. As such, this is a perfect place to relax and kickback and just enjoy life at a slow pace. Additionally the lodge's cat was so friendly and wanted to hangout with me. This is my new 'go to' place when I'm in Far West Texas. I could have easily stayed there a month or two (if I had the time.) LOVE THIS PLACE! read more

Second year staying here around Xmas. Have stayed in a suite both times so had a bedroom and a separate living area. They also allow dogs for $30 a stay, which is a great deal. Have never had any issues with our room or the area. Some nights there will be people in the courtyard area using the fire pit and hanging out. Besides the train it is pretty chill and quiet. Will definitely stay here again if in the area. read more

Each room is more like a little cottage, equipped with closets, a queen size bed, a kitchenette, microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker with coffee, tv, and a bathroom with shower. There's a courtyard with picnic tables and areas to bbq as well as a lounge center to hang out. Everyone here is extremely friendly & helpful. I'm not sure where to begin. I love this lodge!! My husband and I coordinated a group ride to Big Bend and a friend recommended we check out the Antelope Lodge. From our first contact with Jennifer regarding rates and dates she went above and beyond to earn our business. Just a few examples: she offered to purchase any and all groceries prior to our arrival, she knew we would be using her fire pit at night and had stacks of wood ready to go... stacks of kindling too! she opened the kitchen to us to make breakfasts and Easter dinner for our group. She mapped out rides for us to visit Terlingua and ride through Big Bend national park. If that wasn't enough she contacted friends at restaurants to coordinate our lunches while we were out riding. I just can't say enough about her customer service and how far she goes to make you feel at home. I've read a couple of Petty Betty reviews on here and all I can say is that we had a wonderful time. The rooms are older with a super retro vibe. It takes a minute for the hot water to get going in the shower but it gets hot and stays hot. This isn't a Marriott. It's a small quiet property for the less pretentious. I can certainly afford a fancy hotel (and good luck finding one out here ) but you'll never feel so welcome and at home as you will here. So thanks again Jenn... we'll be back next year!!! read more

Retro-shabby-outdated in some ways but wonderful. Look, if you want a 5 star hotel with room service and a spa, dont stay here. I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness. I think it is cute and very sweet. I slept well, (as well as I ever do-i am an insomniac). That said, I thought it was quiet. There is peeling paint in the shower, crack in main door that could let weather in...but its was never a real issue. There were 2 pots in the kitchen, towels and a good coffee pot and microwave. Only one plug in the bathroom but I am prepared.. I brought a small power strip...always do when I travel. In the end, some of the reviews of this place are misleading...it IS CLEAN...its just not the Hilton.. so no princess should stay here...just sayin. read more

The Antelope Lodge got a seriously cute renovation from being a run-down old motor court to a stylish little road-side haven. The rooms are affordable for the area, and clean. They're very dog friendly, and they have a great little courtyard with a fire pit stocked with fire wood. The front desk staff and super friendly and helpful as well. Very charming small, clean, cozy duplex cottages. Each cottage has a vintage looking refrigerator and microwave and a table with two chairs. There is a heat/air conditioning unit in the room. There's also also a coffee maker. There are picnic tables scattered on the grounds. This is a place I would stay for several days if I was spending more time in Alpine, Texas. I'm a fan of unique retro places to stay, but last night was out of the Twilight Zone. Antelope Lodge was way below what we expected from reviews and photos, but ok, we sucked it up. That is, until the guy next door had some kind of breakdown and started yelling and crying and hitting the wall for quite a while. Not going to confront anyone in that state, so went to see manager. She moved us to an overflow room that was even worse: no hot water, temp was either arctic or unliveable Sahara, no hair dryer, cracks in floor, etc, etc. The manager was lovely but this was No-tell Motel Hell. I made a reservation through Expedia for this lodge and because of circumstances beyond my control I had to cancel a couple of hours later. I called the lodge and was told there was no problem and I would not be charged. I called Expedia and they were told there was no charge. I later learned that I was, indeed, charged $85+ because the "owner" has that policy. I do NOT recommend this lodge because they lie. If they lie about this then they obviously do not care about their clients. I was finally able to make my trip to Alpine but I absolutely did not stay at this lodge. I don't trust them. read more

Room wasn't cleaned when we checked in (after the stated 3pm check-in time), so we had to wait an hour. Noticed on my charged an extra fee after checkout without being notified, and when I called to inquire about it, Lauren at the front desk was beyond rude. So, here's the deal - I really, really wanted to love this place. But after our first night (of three), I found myself in a really irritable funk much of the next day. I was picking fights with the Mister, being indecisive and just generally feeling bitchy. Then it really sort of hit me why: our trip to West Texas was our last little getaway before our wedding, and we'd both really hoped to relax, see some great bands (we were in town for Viva Big Bend) and drink in small town life. But Alpine ain't the place to do it. Sigh. Perhaps I'm partially to blame, for eschewing the local chain (Hampton Inn) and downtown's go-to hotel (The Holland) in order to save a little money and stay in a historic motor court. I really thought we'd get to experience traveling as it was in the 1950s (excusing the rampant racism, or course). This place is family owned, to boot, so I was thrilled to be supporting local business. But our room - and the town - were simply depressing. Our room wasn't clean -- there were odd stains on the wall by the bed, and the door had a gap large enough for any manner of creepy-crawly to get in. Overall, the room is much smaller than I expected, so it felt very cramped. The bathroom is very cute and quaint with pink and green tiles, pedestal sink and a stand-up shower (only), but again it was fairly cramped. I actually had to sit at an angle on the fracking toilet. And did I mention the bathroom door didn't close properly? The door knob is essentially for show; there's none of the internal stuff you need to make a doorknob work. Instead, there's a hook and eye affixed to the door that acts as the latch to close the door. I don't consider myself terribly high maintenance, so seeing that wasn't a big deal -- until I realized that the door STILL didn't close all the way. There was a gap, probably as big as what you'd find in a janky public restroom stall. Was it the end of the world? No -- but it certainly didn't lend itself to relaxation. And guess what? I don't pay $85 a night to use a public toilet. I'm not sure what material our floor was, but tiles were missing all over the place. The threshold between the main floor and bathroom tile was completely obliterated--in its place, there was dirt (which my fiance brought to bed on the soles of his feet). The closet was a dark, dank little area with a giant hole in the back wall. On the outside of it, they've affixed a rack with five clothes hangers as an alternative; I guess that would be okay, assuming you didn't want to use the mirror, too (which would be obscured by any hanging clothes). There's a little kitchenette, but absolutely no pans, plates or utensils. The owners have apparently had issues with theft, because they make clear that every bit of room décor attached to the walls is actually glued down. I understand not wanting to constantly replace dishware, but could they at least have it available for use from the office? Maybe have a note explaining where we can borrow some? We are now proud owners of a $4 skillet and some high-end $1 knives from the Family Dollar. The mattress is also very creaky (noise every time you turn) and not particularly comfortable, so none of our nights were all that restful. We were in a queen bed, same as at home, but somehow it felt much smaller than we're used to. But, umm... on the plus side, the staff seem friendly, there is wifi and it's close to downtown. Though, this town is small, so everything, really is close to downtown. Ohh, and the towels were fantastic -- usually hotels skimp and give you something that resemble a dishtowel, but these were oversized beach towel types that were wonderfully fluffy. Once I reset my expectations, I was able to pull out of my funk and make the most the rest of our stay. But if we ever come back to West Texas, we won't be staying here. I loved the idea and wanted the quirkiness but the reality simply didn't live up to expectations. read more

The door has obviously been kicked in a few times so don't leave anything valuable inside when you aren't there. Most of the lights are either burned out, fire hazards or just... a serious concern. Wifi is a sometimes thing. You want any kind of pots,pans or kitchenware for the kitchenette? They got Salvation Army rejects that you have to beg for, so bring your own or don't bother cooking. Cute and I like non-chain suite-style kitchenettes but... damn people. That's a whole lot of dead bugs in the fridge. Makes me wonder what else isn't getting cleaned regular. Ever. read more

There is nothing like a road trip out west to escape from mundane city life... and no better place to rest your road weary eyes than at Antelope Lodge. Built as "motor court" in the late 1940's, the hotel provides individual stucco cabins, each complete with a kitchenette, a red tile roof and (hooray) a front porch with metal lawn chairs!! The mixture of ocotillo, mountians, pine trees and picnic tables is enough to make you want to stay a while. But dont get to thinking that this some yuppified remake of summer camp... no, this is the real deal. The feel of the place is genuine rustic comfort. And the lobby also houses a rock shop/ museum with specimens to highlight the natural history of the Big Bend Region. This is my absolute favorite base camp for west Texas adventures!! So immerse yourself in nostalgia for simpler times, crack open a beer on the stone porch and soak it up. read more

First, Alpine is weird. From the layout to the services, the grocery store was extremely lacking and expensive, restaraunts hard to find, signage is dismal. I read several reviews before going, to find a decent place to sleep and several of my first choices were booked. I went to AL with some trepidation, but in all fairness I knew it was old when I went there. I was warned in advance that the refrigerator in room 15 didn't work, this was not a big deal for me as I had a cooler with me. I found the room clean, the bed comfortable and even though the toilet was close to the wall like I had heard before, it was usable. The TV was small the internet was patchy until after peak hours ... most of the things about this room were entirely forgivable except for one ... there was not a single drop of hot water in that room the entire time I was there. I can't imagine the housekeeping staff not knowing this because often times you need hot water to clean certain areas. I had planned to take my shower in the morning and I will be eternally grateful to the shower gods that I changed my mind and took it around dinner time the night before ... I don't care how hot it is outside a cold shower is never enjoyable in an air conditioned room (which was plenty cool by the way) and you don't get clean, your pores don't open up, you just kind of wash off. I would have been livid if I had crawled out of bed and into a cold shower, that would have truly pissed me off. The only other real complaint I have is the shower curtain toward's the faucet side was all gummed up and matted and stuck together which indicates clearly that it's not clean ... there's no reason for it to be all stuck together and dark in color unless it's old and unclean. To make a long story short if possible, I think it's a crap shoot. I think any room you choose there is going to have something about it that's not going to be like a new hotel in another town and I think you get what you pay for, and it was worth it for me to pay for the cheaper room because everything was acceptable except for the cold water, and the shower curtain. I did not see one bug or fly. read more

I'm not sure where they got the photos of this place, but that is not the way it looks.This place is a DUMP. The floors are concrete. the windows are old rusted out 1950's and filthy. The door trim in our bathroom was totally rotted out. The kitchen was ok , the bed was good, but that is about all there was. NOT worth $90.00 a night, oh and the train rumbles through about 5 or 6 time a night. The grounds around our unit were strewn with broken glass and beer cans. We stayed here for Labor Day weekend and had an amazing time. The rooms were comfortable and cozy. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We greatly enjoyed the courtyard. It was nice to have a good outdoor area to hang out at the end of a busy day. We even got to see some mule deer wander through. We would highly recommend the Lodge and will definitely be staying here again on our next trip to Alpine. read more

The experience of driving through Alpine, Texas is something akin to watching the sprawling George Stevens classic film GIANT come to life through the front windshield of your car. But stopping for an actual visit reveals the charming little town to be an eclectic blend of artists and local eccentrics. And if you do stay, I recommend the Antelope Lodge--mostly for its comfort, convenience and old-fashioned charm. The place looks like it hasn't changed since it was first built, which is why it's so appealing--especially to those who fondly recall staying in places just like the Antelope while traveling with our parents in the late 1950's. The Antelope Lodge had a super friendly and helpful staff, fair price for what it was and a rustic feel! The rooms are all a little bit older but super charming and sweet with new comfy mattresses. You can build yourself a little fire in the middle of the property to roast marshmallows, brew yourself some coffee, drink it with a good book while you sit outside your room on a picnic table, plus the room warmed up quickly enough! It's something different than a Motel 6 or Holiday Inn and it's puppy friendly! I'm very happy with my stay and will be staying again in my future travels to/through Alpine. read more

We loved our stay there. Rustic, charming and accommodating are just a few of the words I can use to describe our visit. If you are looking for stale, modern with a cheap continental breakfast this is not for you. Our room was clean, bug free and comfortable. We asked for extra towels and they quickly obliged. WiFi signal was good. Our ACs worked. Fridge, microwave and hot water also no problems. If I had to complain about something...our shower drain was slow to drain water. I mentioned it and someone was dispatched to look at it. Not really worthy of deducting a star. All in all, we will be back again. read more

People who give this 3 stars just done get it. This is an old 1950's motor court and it could not be cuter!!! The casitas are small but oh so cute and so clean. The courtyard is charming. They have fire pits and bbq's but honestly I am sitting on an Adirondack chair sipping a cocktail writing this and it is heavenly. The staff is amazing. It's a little out of the main area of town which lends to quiet! You are in West Texas where things are supposed to be quirky and cute. This place is all of that and more. Stay here. This was a great little hotel in the outskirts of Alpine. The location was convenient in the sense that it was right off of the road that cut through town, and that it was really close to the Big Bend Brewing Co. The size of the room was a little small, but the accommodation was clean. The fixtures were older, and the room had an antique feel. On the other hand, the bathroom was tiny and made me feel odd because of the sign that discouraged the flushing of syringes down the toilet. That's why I gave the place 4 stars. It was a great stay, and the manager was polite and informative. Apparently the place had recently changed owners, but had been open since the 1940s. Cool piece of history, with a wide-open, outdoor common area. It also had a meat smoker accessible! read more

We stayed at Antelope Lodge on New Year's Eve on our way to Big Bend. The property was quaint and the service awesome. Property is old but owner has done a good job with the updates. We enjoyed our stay over Thanksgiving. The staff was helpful and the accomodations were good for our dog too. We had to leave a day early and the mamger quickly refunded the extra day to our credit card. We've stayed at Antelope Lodge off and on for over 40 years. The owners have really worked hard to keep an almost 70 year old motel in working condition. read more

This place is an adorable old motorcourt with lots of little casitas, and everyone we interacted with was nice and down to earth. Our room was small and clean and neat with an impressive amount of storage space. There was a little kitchenette with a note that said if we wanted to borrow pots/dishes/utensils etc we should just ask at the front desk. Linens were clean and the bed was reasonably comfy. Adorable little tile bathroom with endless hot water. My only complaint is that the heater/AC unit was right next to our heads and it was LOUD, so we ended up turning it off - luckily it wasn't super cold out. Very glad we stayed here. read more

The owners snarky, unapologetic responses to negative reviews are indicative of the poor management of this property. The place itself, however, is charming and the front desk staff are very nice. I wasn't expecting a five star hotel but my first impression was the front porch, porch cover, chairs, windows, etc. were covered with dirt, leaves and cobwebs. Apparently cleaning the outside of the rooms is not part of the daily routine. I borrowed a broom and swept everything inside and out myself. The first night I killed two large roaches. I purchased a can of Raid and sprayed the entire perimeter of the room. I didn't see any more roaches the following two nights. The mattress was uncomfortable and the coffee pot was filthy. Four days after my return, my hairdresser found lice larvae in my hair. I don't have children or pets, live alone, and have limited contact with people at work. I hadn't left the house since returning from my trip to Alpine. While the owner did not address any of the other issues above on tripadvisor.com, her reply to the lice was, first, my hairdresser, who has been working for 20 years, didn't know the difference between lice and dandruff. Second, the CDC says you can only get lice from head to head contact. This is untrue. You can get lice from contact with infested bedding or upholstery. And third, if the linens had lice I should have been able to see them before getting into bed. This is also untrue. Detecting white lice and white lice eggs on white linens would require a magnifying glass. I actually rather liked this place and would have stayed there again but, now I wouldn't take the chance. Due to the lice coupled with the owner's unpleasant, unprofessional attitude, I won't be returning and cannot recommend to anyone. read more

We like funky. Its a bit run down, near the railroad. Looked cool from the outside. It has a tiny kitchen but no pots or pans, cups, silverware or anyway to use the kitchen. Nice to have a semi-cool fridge but it never got cold enough for husband's beer. $89 for missing tiles, dirt on walls, broken furniture, very saggy bed, stained everything. The worse part was the smell. We finally came to the conclusion it was the nastiest smelling dryer sheets we have ever experienced. There was no way to get away from the smell. So strong we both got headaches. Left the door open, all windows open, fan running and sat outside until 11pm. Still the smell. Moved our suitcases to the truck becasue we didn't want our clothes to pick up the smell. Despite the smell we still had cockroaches and flies - so many, many flies. Left as soon as the office opened in the morning without much sleep. Didn't shower because the towels smelled like a whorehouse on Saturday night. This is waaay beyond funky, this is beyond a dive. Dives are fun, this was not fun it was sickening. We camp most of the time, not picky folks, Frito Pie at The Boathouse in Terlingua is gourmet heaven after weeks of camping. Buy a tent, sleep on the ground, smell the clean air of Southwest Texas. read more
