Absolutely awful. Nasty, noisy, tiny, tiny moldy bathroom (not recommended for tall people. Stay elsewhere! I wish we had.

Our west Texas adventure was made even better by staying a few nights at the Maverick Inn!! Great little place to stay and relax. We will definitely stay here when we head back out to the Big Bend area. read more

We have been going to Alpine for years and enjoyed staying at the Holland or the Maverick if the Holland was full. We love the older places with history and character. Stayed at the Maverick this week but we have noticed both of these properties have been going downhill. Rooms are not very clean and something is not working (A/C, TV, elevator, restaurant closed). The staff have always been cheerful and try to be helpful. But these places need some TLC . read more

First off - the manager Hope was extremely helpful, kind and accommodating (I talked to her several times over the phone about rates and billing). She made us like the hotel even more. When it comes to the rooms (we've stayed here several times over the years), it should be noted that for the very affordable price point, this is a great property with shabby-sheik western style rooms. Recommend staying in the room 11 large room with a mini-courtyard with grass (good for our pets). We opted not to have the room cleaned during our stay, but they offered every day. The guest office has nice snacks and hot teas/coffee. We really enjoy this property and the adobe/ western rooms. read more

A lot to like about the theming of this hotel, as the southwestern vibe is perfect for a road trip through the area. Some oddities include the claustrophobic original bathrooms (ours had some sort of chevron caution tape holding a bit of the floor down) and the fact we had to pick up our keys at the Holland Hotel. I wanted this place to be a wonderful place for my wife's birthday for us to stay while we roamed around the Big Bend area for three days. On our first night there I discovered the door to our room doesn't lock. Not to make a fuss, I sit our ice chest in front of the door and slept with my pistol on the bedside table. The next morning I contacted the front desk which is located in another hotel. They said they would contact the maintenance man and he would come fix it. We packed up our valuables and went touring the Davis Mountains. Upon arriving back our door still had not been fixed. I was told by the front desk that the maintenance man had not contacted them. I lost my cool and told them to forget it. So we spent the next two nights there with no lock on the door and taking our valuables with us when we went somewhere. There were other problems as well such as the room had a garden tub with the shower located in the center that would be challenging for an acrobat to maneuver. The shower curtain was too small and got water everywhere. And lastly, the toilet area was so small it had no leg room. read more

No muss, no fuss, pet-friendly lodging, just like it says on the tin. Everything to do, everywhere to eat and drink in Alpine is less than a mile away, with sidewalks for walking the whole way on both sides of the street. Right across from Sul Ross State if that's your cause for visiting. All the running water-things (shower toilet sink) worked great and water was good. Beds were fine. Maybe bring your own pillows; I wished I'd have brought one or two of my own. AC blows cold, heater blows hot. TV is sized proportionally to how much time we wanted to spend watching it: very little. Pets are $30/head. Fine. Check-in was easy. There's an AutoZone next door in case your car needs a pick-me-up. read more

Nice staff. The pool is so cute and clean. The rooms are ok. The sheets don't stay on the bed. They definitely need deep-pocket sheets. They have small refrigerators and microwaves. The shower in one of the rooms had mold and mildew. The other room we had had a tub/shower combination and had no mold. The rooms, besides the shower with mold and mildew, were very clean. It's a cute and pleasant place to stay. You have an opportunity to meet and greet those staying around you. The trains going by at night didn't bother me. It sort of added a charm. read more

We love the Maverick, we love the location, we like the rooms, we like the service, and we like the amenities. We will definitely come back. My one real complaint is that the sink could've used a two minute scrub with Ajax. No excuse for a grimy sink. also, it would be nice if there were a little shelf in the shower, even the kind that you hang from the pipe. Don't want to sound too cranky because we like the place. Had a lovely stay here. We booked a larger room with a king and garden tub. Upscale Cowboy decor. Very nice. Comfy bed. Breakfast was well done for a continental style self-serve. Grounds are West Texas-Charming. Staff is very helpful. Would stay again. Some people noted the trains going by. Well, that's Alpine. You get it all over town. Didn't bother us. Upon checking in they gave us free drink coupons for the Century Bar (same owners as the Holland). Very nice gesture. read more

A very lovey & quaint place to stay! When sis & I arrived we were greeted by the owners, very sweet and accommodating. Gave us great recommendations for where to get dinner & drinks. The room was comfy and clean, but parking can take some maneuvering so be careful. The breakfast includes coffee, tea, cereal, bagels, pastries, yogurt, etc. . . But what blew us away was their homemade granola! It wad so good we bought a bag each to take home. :D The back patio area where we ate our breakfast was quiet & covered in greenery, very nice! They are also pet friendly here with reasonable prices(we were happy to run into a furry friend or two). If you're looking for a fancy smancy place with modern decor & room service, then this place might not be for you. BUT if you're looking for a cute, comfy, homey, place to stay with friendly staff, then The Maverick Inn will be a wonderful fit! Can't wait to come back and stay! read more

This motel is the pits! The towels are thin, the breakfast consisted of Pop Tarts and granola bars, my bathroom door only opened 1/4 of the way as it hit my bed (good thing I could still squeeze in), the room was NOT cleaned regularly or well, the lobby phone rang unanswered, the walls are paper thin so I could hear every word spoken by the people next door, there were 5 trains one night tooting their horns with abandon (the ear plugs provided did NOT block the sound), and the price was high. read more

Stayed one night at the maverick inn. We booked online and once we arrived we saw it was right next to a railroad track. The clerk assured us that the train doesn't blow it's whistle in town. This was completely untrue. The train comes past the motel numerous times during the night (it seemed like every hour) and blows its whistle several times each trip. The other issue is that while the motel room has been cutsied up, the bathroom hasn't been touched in decades. The toilet wasn't securely attached to the floor, when you sit on the toilet your knees are touching the wall in front of you and the shower was like stepping down into a nasty dungeon. We can't speak to their breakfast because it didn't start til 7am and we had to leave earlier than that. These would be thing you would expect at an older motel in the $50-60/night range, but this place is charging over $100/night. If you are going to charge the same as the big chains then you need to offer equal amenities/quality. read more

It was great until it wasn't! First of all let me thank the staff for accommodating us at last minute. They were very kind and accommodating. The young lady working the evening shift made a recommendation for dinner which was spot on and much appreciated. The room was very spacious and we had our own little yard area. There is an area with a fire pit and horseshoes where my children love to run around. There are several photo opportunities at the motel. However, there is no one working after 8 PM until 8 AM. We could not ever get the TV to work which was very hard with the kids. We had a difficult time getting the heater to work despite instructions being available. Turns out it just took forever to heat up the room. There is a train that is close by but we did not find that bothersome. Our previous time staying here, The traffic on the nearby road is what kept us awake. But where we were this time we were not bothered. The biggest concern was when I was brushing my teeth I noticed that there was something on the water Spicket where the water comes out. When I took a rag to wipe it, it was a big bunch of mildew or mold. When I washed it real good and turned it back on and even more black -green mold fell out... To think I was brushing my teeth with that and so had my children! There were two sinks, The second sink was not as dirty. Overall, it is a really cute place and we would stay again. However, I will definitely check the sinks and cleanliness next time. read more

I love the Maverick Inn. Let me count the ways: -Pet friendly: just changed their policy to a one time fee of $30 per stay, rather than paying per night. -Free Wi-Fi. -Gay friendly. -Totally decent & pretty extensive free breakfast. One of the women who works there made cookies & chocolate banana bread. Yum! -That awesome neon sign with roses and a horseshoe. -Nicely decorated, clean, cozy rooms that cost the same or less than some of the more well-known places in the West Texas area (Marathon & Marfa especially). -Lots of cats living on the premises (most of them are feral and won't let you pet them, but some of them are friendly). -A smallish pool with a cool hang out area. There's a big metal tub for filling with ice and beer. -Literally across the street from Sul Ross University, which has a big lawn to walk your dog, and where we saw many deers and a fox one night! -Convenient location for exploring the neighboring towns of Marfa, Marathon, and Fort Davis. Everyone we encountered who worked there was very friendly and accommodating. I would definitely stay there again, and can't really think of a reason to stay anywhere else. read more

In a strange bold impulse my boyfriend and I decided we were going to camp on our west Texas adventure / trip / getaway / escapade or whatever. Then we checked the weather. That's how we ended up at this wonderful, wonderful place - and I'm so glad we did. The Maverick is cozy, clean, friendly and full of character. The southwestern decor and all the amenities, including a flat-screen TV, complimentary coffee, free Wi-Fi and egyptian cotton sheets are great. We had planned to stay in Marfa originally, but everything was booked and/or ridiculously priced. I say ignore the hype and stay at The Maverick in Alpine. Also, avoid the hipsters. read more

The better half and I took a quick holiday weekend to Alpine, thanks to my impulsive spending and Groupon. And thankfully, this was one of those occasions where our experience was so great, my impulsive spending was given the OK. The Maverick Inn is everything you could want in a West Texas/Southwest inn: adobe buildings, tiled floors, rustic furniture, fabulous pool area with grill and cooler, and very helpful staff. Mark, the manager, was very welcoming and a great resource for finding things to do when you impulsively go to a place you know nothing about. He hooked us up with great bar recommendations and the Reata, a nom-fest in its own right. He even gave us free tickets to see the local baseball game that night. The room was small and tidy, with adorable rustic touches, and surprisingly awesome toiletries! A good night sleep on their super comfy beds and the yummy continental breakfast in the morning put you right as rain for another day of exploring. Loved this place! One warning, the pool area is THE place to be at night, so if you're noise sensitive, pick a room away from the pool area. Also, there is a train that runs through town at night, but each room comes with a set of earplugs...nice touch! read more

Loved this place. On our extensive road trip to Houston from Los Angeles we decided to detour through Marfa Texas. However many of the motels in Marfa were way over priced. So we decided to look in nearby towns. Found Maverick Inn in Alpine TX. This place was great. Like a rustic cabin with hotel amenities. And they are very pet friendly. Staff was nice too, unlike others in the area who gave off an almost pretentious attitude. After all, there is a reason why we needed a break from LA. Staff was very nice. Beds were very comfortable. I almost didn't review because we wanted to keep this special treasure all to ourselves. The bed sheets were full of short and long dark hairs. We tried to get a new set but office was already closed. The sign on the window said to call Bryan for assistance and guess what? His number was a non working number. We tried to shower with very limited water pressure and the towels also had long black hairs. The hand towels we had looked like they were used for cleaning. One was stained yellow and the other was cut off. Literally cut off. The sink looked very dirty. The bathroom and shower were extremely small. When sitting on the toilet your face was an inch away from the wall. Overall not satisfied and regret booking two nights. read more

Looks good from the pictures and that's why we went there. But once we got there we had a horrible experience. In the morning the breakfast consisted of eggs that sat in water from the condensation ,about half a inch to be exact. They don't have apples or oat meal as pictured. Restroom. Sink was gross it was brown from I don't know what. The toilet sat 1 inch from the wall. It felt like I was having a staring contest with the wall. And the shower head had no steady stream, made it very unpleasant. The bed had stains and Hair everywhere it was gross. I could not even imagine when was the last time they changed them I felt bad for other people who had the same in their beds but don't check. I wouldn't mind staying at this place if I paid 35$ a night. But not for what we paid. Never again. read more

Absolutely loved my visit and stay at the Maverick Inn in Alpine, Texas. I only wish I could have stayed more days. This is a "no-fuss" kind of hotel in my humble opinion. You won't be blown away by the modern features found in your room, in fact you may feel underwhelmed by the relatively small television and the window unit A/C, but who the heck watches TV on vacation anyway. And our room stayed plenty cold our entire visit. However, I promise you, you won't have a problem when you feel the charm of your room and the light load the room rate bares on your wallet. I couldn't believe how much less it cost me to stay at the Maverick as compared to the two chain hotels in town. Not to mention how cozy and comfortable I found my room to be. I won't hesitate to book another room at the Maverick Inn in the future! read more

We stayed here one night in October, 2014. The room was exceptionally clean and quiet, the shower was nice, the staff were friendly, and breakfast was EXCELLENT. My favorite part of the Maverick was the lobby. There were some great photos, really cool artifacts and books, and a cool movie poster that I think was from a movie filmed in West Texas. The Maverick captures the essence of Big Bend country, and truly exemplifies West Texas charm. We will definitely stay again! read more

Nice little motel, clean and good location. They have coffee and oatmeal in the mornings. Biggest con is no shower pressure so hard to take a quick shower since not very much water is coming out. Would be nice to have suitcase stands so you didn't have to just have your suitcase on the floor. Would stay again. read more

We recently stayed at the Maverick Inn in Alpine, Texas. It is a cute motel right across from Sul Ross University. It is super cute and clean. There were many cute photo ops for the kids: wagon wheels, a wooded Indian, benches, flower pots... The room was done in a Western kind of theme that could have been cheesy very easily but was done nicely here. The size of the room was big and we were able to put our two pack and plays in the room without problem. The curtains were worn and the shower was tiny but it worked. We had some trouble figuring out the heater. The continental breakfast was very minimal. No yogurt and no other kind of fruit except apples. It is close to the train tracks but somehow, it wasn't too terrible. It is also right next to a busy road but the noise didn't wake up our kids. We would definitely stay again! read more

No seating outside, pool closed, no personnel in office, didn't keep posted office hours (8-3, which is absurd), left personal information of travelers taped in envelopes on front door to check in. Rooms are clean.. rustic but the staff is great. Complete a Southern hospitality especially after comparing it to so much rudeness and arrogance in Marfa. Coffee and breakfast was nice. If traveling with family, bring fixings for s'mores, they have a great fire pit in the back. read more

Really enjoyed our stay here. Rustic feel but rooms are nicely decorated and very comfortable. Park in front of your room! Good free breakfast - fresh eggs and sausage with alternating biscuits/gravy or waffle sticks every other day. Would definitely come here again if visiting big bend. About 1-1.5 hr drive to BB from here. Very friendly staff. Clean property. Pool out in the front. Couldn't ask for more in this small quaint city of alpine. read more

We didn't find the trains the issue others have. Not that many or that long. The main issue we had was extremely small bathroom. Hard for us to maneuver and we are both short. However, the free breakfast was awesome. The staff recommendation on local places to visit was spot on. The bed and A/C were great. This whole area of the Big Bend is worth the visit. A very mediocre motel with a nice decor. My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights during a trip to Big Bend. Overall we were pretty disappointed. Positives: - Great decor - Accommodating staff - Breakfast pastries - Conveniently located Negatives - Poor room maintenance. (Headboard had disconnected from wall and banged with any movement of the bed. Missing light bulb. Clock radio buzzed so loud we had to unplug it.) - Small rooms with big furniture. I'm guessing this is a 60s era motel and the room size reflects that. Bathroom had a pedestal sink, so there is nowhere to spread out your toiletries. - Bouncy bed although we did sleep fine. - Location is between busy road and railroad. As stated in other reviews, the trains can be loud and easily wake you up. Offering complimentary ear plugs is not a fun quirk but a sign of potential noise. - If the motel is full, parking can be dicey. - Reception and breakfast open at 08:00 a.m. This place is not for early risers. - 4 seats in the breakfast area. Be prepared to eat in your room. We cancelled our last night here and found accommodations elsewhere. If you like funky and quirky over comfortable, then this is the place for you. If not you could well be disappointed. read more

Very nice hotel in an enjoyable town, with a convenient location right across the street from the university and an easy stroll down Holland Ave to a great area of Alpine with many restaurants. The room was really beautiful and clean, done up in a rustic Mexican style with wrought iron beds/lamps, Saltillo tile floor, wooden paneling, and great shower with Mexican tile. This hotel has some extra touches-bonfire area with firewood for cool nights and covered rock patio for hot days. Nice pool area, although they looked at me with amazement when I asked if it were open. Despite the near 70 temperatures during the day, it dropped to 30 at night and many in Alpine seemed to be unnerved by the "cold". They have probably never been to Minnesota, much less Duluth. The rooms along Holland Ave (#21-26), like the one I had, are somewhat loud-Holland Ave becomes a highway about in this area, and the rooms in this building have back windows about 20 feet off the road. You are going to hear the train horn a couple of times at night. Given the size of Alpine, the track route right through the middle of town, and the level of the horn, it's doubtful you wouldn't hear it everywhere in Alpine. Nice touch that they had earplugs and a noise machine in the room, neither of which were necessary. The office staff were apologetic that there are a few cats on the property-? Rather have cats than mice and those 4" cockroaches Texans like to call "waterbugs" to make themselves feel better. No sign whatsoever of any vermin around here, thanks to the friendly cats. Don't bother with the Folgers coffeemaker in the room-there is a tasty free breakfast,with terrific coffee by Big Bend Roasters, fruit, bagels, sweet rolls, biscuits and gravy, and kolaches. Overall, just a great hotel for anyone visiting the university or heading to/from Big Bend. read more

This was a great experience and I was very happy with the stay. I spent a week here and really enjoyed it. This is the only hotel I've ever stayed in that issues you ear plugs when you check in. There is a Hwy on one side and regular train traffic on the other side. I didn't have a problem with the train whistle or road noise and thought it was quaint and an interesting part of the visit. When I'm on the road, I don't expect to duplicate my bedroom at home. The breakfast each morning was hot and good (coffee, eggs, sausage & biscuits). The rooms were small but clean, with a coffee pot, free bottled water and cableTV. I had a king size bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom was very very very small but everything worked and the maids did a great job getting everything back to pristine shape each day. This is very much a 40's or 50's style motor inn and I really liked being able to park right outside my door - my dog liked that too! I'll stay here again. read more

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights for a mini-honeymoon and loved it. We stayed here and day-tripped to Big Bend Natl Park (2-3 hrs away) and it was awesome. It is clean, rooms are country-chic/clean and cute, grounds and employees are very nice, it is near good restaurants and a university, has an excellent pool, is dog-friendly, great parking. Overall, impressed and will definitely stay here again. Get up early and watch the sunset, too. It is everything we needed and nothing we didn't. Highly recommend it. read more
