I honestly love this place. I literally start drooling thinking about their perfect noodle bowls. The bowls of udon noodles are so flavorful and delicious, and just set such a high standard for comfort food. I've gotten the truffle beef pho before which is just such a perfect combination of flavors - honestly so warm and comforting with so much umami. The cheese niku curry is insanely good. The curry is so flavorful already and then the cheese! The cheese is so freaking good - it's just all melty and totally goes with the sauce and noodles. I've tried the duck soup (Kamo Nanban Udon) as well which is definitely lighter and more mild of a broth, but with the yuzu addition it definitely has a standout flavor as well. The niku udon is also flavorful and lighter of a broth but also so comforting and warm. My friend has gotten the uni cream udon and LOVED it. Sad they no longer have the miso carbonara but it's okay. Service is great - the people there are so kind and thoughtful. The place is clean and fresh with a relaxed but modern vibe with some cool painted murals on the walls. The bowls are $20+ ish each, which is definitely on the more pricey side but it's worth it bc the portions are huge and the sauces and broths and flavors are so epic. Overall, the atmosphere is mimalistic with the instrumental sounds from top songs like Post Malone, Maroon 5, Ariana playing. The crowd overall is young. Since this was my first time dining here I had to order a couple of items. The takoyaki is delicious! It came out crispy, hot with fresh chunks of octopus. Perfection. Came here last night with my husband. AS much as I love noodles I haven't found a udon dish I've loved quite yet. My biggest gripe is that the soup typically feels so light and does not cook into the noodles themselves. After reading the review I was excited to try this location. My husband and I ordered the curry udon and also the sukiyaki udon. The curry udon was delicious! I would definitely order one of those for myself next time. I love that the curry flavor sticks to the udon itself unlike typical udon soup dishes. The karage chicken that came with the dish itself was so well cooked and much flatter than normal karage chicken. The sukiyaki udon was great as well. The broth was rich and there was a lot of variety in terms of additions to the bowl. My husband commented that it was very much like a hot pot dish with all the fixings inside. Five stars for the fried chicken alone. I don't know if it was because I was super hungry or because it really was that good. The fried chicken appetizer comes with 4 sizeable pieces that are crispy, lightly breaded, thinly sliced hot delicious chicken that I could have just had over rice and been fine. I know this is an udon place, but I'm definitely a fan of their chicken!! I had the udon with mountain veggies- this was okay. The broth wasn't particularly deep or flavorful, but this can be hard to do with a vegetable based broth. The noodles were really excellent though- thin udon, looked and tastes freshly made. We've recently been on this new crave for delicious udon - when my best friend came from California we decided to drop in Futago (recommendation don't come in when you're nearly hangry because you'll want to order one of everything which is what I almost did - but ate with some wonderful humans who pressed the pause button) Firstly, the ambience is very esthetically pleasing ! I love the art paintings on the wall. The neighborhood is also very walkable. Down to the juicy party - I love that their menu has so many options the spread varies from traditional to experimental options ! I thought the uni udon was very rich and delicious - the broth was light which was surprising. The amount of udon they give in proportion to toppings is perfect. You get a great uni taste - not to light not to strong. We also got the miso carbonara - another milky rich and tasty option ! The cheesy addition to the udon was very delicious ! The snow crab udon was also great - the broth was thicker than the other two. Next time I come I'll probably try a more traditional udon! Came here the other day, the food here was good. I was nervous about the curry chicken ramen but it was amazing! The chicken was cooked well and the spices all blended together very well. More of a savory flavor if you are looking for a mild amount of spice, yet tasty ramen. For an appetizer we got the seaweed salad which was very lackluster. Best udon place in Boston!! I ordered the sukiyaki udon for $18 and it was super filling. The broth is a *bit* too sweet, but that's sukiyaki for you. My boyfriend ordered the uni cream udon for $21 and absolutely loved it. It has a very strong uni taste, so I would only recommend it to people who've tried uni before (and liked it). I am so happy there are so many udon restaurants opening up in the Boston area and that Futago Udon is one of them! Having tried most of the other Udon restaurants in the area, this one is definitely my favorite! There are a variety of unique options to choose from and the everything is made to order to ensure freshness. I ordered the mad tiger cold udon and my husband got the Sukiyaki udon. Both were delicious and very flavorful. If you haven't tried cold udon noodles before, it isn't as weird as it sounds! I recommend you try it at least once here as they make it pretty well. Super hot and moist on the inside and good sized chunks of octopus! I order the Sukiyaki Udon as an entree and I was so ready to love it but I gotta say, it left me disappointed. My favorite udon restaurant in Boston! I came by around 7 p.m. on a Friday and there was a relatively long wait. Unfortunately there's not much waiting room in the restaurant, so expect a line outside. Once seated, my friend and I were served super quickly. I ordered the Kamo Nanban (udon with sliced marinated duck), and it was delicious! At first I was considering a carbonara-based udon, but the waiter advised me that if I was looking for something on the lighter side then Kamo Nanban was a smart choice. The broth was full but light--definitely my ideal noodle soup. A friend of mine who's lived in Boston for 35 years recommended this place as the best udon restaurant in New England and he's absolutely right. The noodles and appetizers are top notch - absolutely delicious and served in whopping huge portions for a very affordable price ($20 range per giant bowl of noodles). This spot is so low key and peaceful it makes a great place to catch up with a friend or go on a chill date! We ordered the following dishes: 1/ Purple sweet potato fries - super unique and delicious, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. I don't even know where they found this variety of Okinawa yam that comes in such a deep purple hue! It makes a unique appetizer and is very yummy and probably healthy too! 2/ Fried oysters - these are standard fried oysters but it only comes with three oysters. I would skip next time. 3/ Sukiyaki noodle soup - these were BOMB. There are so many meat and veggie toppings that come with the soup and it was HUGE. The soup broth itself is also super super delicious - the perfect blend of sweet and salty. And it comes in a large stone pot/bowl. 4/ Uni cream noodle soup - I ordered these to go and they were also delicious! The cream broth is yummy and they provide a generous portion of uni. Chef Minh of Futago and her team make and serve food with so much heart. I had the uni cold udon while my partner had the duck breast warm udon. Before those, we shared two appetizers - tender eggplant chilled in soy sauce served with pickled grate yuzu, and flash fried silken tofu served atop a soul comforting mushroom soup. Both were so elegant yet full of layers of flavor thanks to chef's efforts creating broths from scratch. The dishes were too good and we forgot to take photos! When my uni udon came out I was in love. The most yummy dish I've had in months (my chef partner won't take offense right...?). Creamy yet firm uni juxtaposed the bite and chewiness of chef's housemade noodles. The broth clearly benefited from bonito and kombu, with a mild yet deep soy aroma that did not overwhelm. My favorite was pulling on a few flying fish roes and a bite of the shiso leaf before diving in for some more udon. Honestly the cycle of textures and flavors married each element so well, I was newly excited for each bite. I was so obsessed with my dish I did not even steal from the partner's duck udon. He complimented the tenderness of the duck, but I wasn't listening because why would I let anyone interrupt my love affair with my cold udon bowl? If you have been to Yume Go Akara and fallen in love with / have been spoiled by the housemade magic noodles there (cold udon any day please!!), you are in for a treat with Futago's noodles. Yume's is tender and soft; Futago's is bouncy with bite. I love both so much and feel so blessed that I can crave each equally and alternate between them. Chef Minh's team loves feeding you and that can be felt through the thoughtful attentiveness of the staff, who leave you your space and swoop in only at the right moments. Congrats on another adventure chef and cheers to many more! P.S.: in my reliving of the uni udon I forgot to mention dessert!! The yuzu cheesecake was delicate; the tang cut through the richness of cream cheese so well, leaving you feeling half the dessert guilt. Great place for some warm udon on a cold day. My gf and I love their sister restaurant in Davis square (Sugidama) so it's no surprise how we felt here. Food: Definitely what I always value first in a dining venue, the food here was particularly delicious. I tend to favor flavorful/spicy food but I was still impressed with the Sukiyaki Udon. It has a sweet flavor while still retaining a hearty feel. It's the type of udon I'd drink after a cold ass day outside. I got the kimchi udon, which was pretty good but exactly what you'd expect. It wasn't anything special but I enjoyed it. If I go back i will try something else. For apps we got the fried chicken which was so delicious! Crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside. Couldn't ask for anything more. Service/Ambience: pretty standard. Ambiance was trendy and casual. Lots of other Asians eating there and what I assume are college kids. Price: a little pricey for me since the Sukiyaki was $18, but it's not too abnormal for the area. The portions are big, so in the future I'll likely split an udon with the GF and get an app or two. There is a really long wait time to dine at Futago on the weekends. My party of three waited for over 40 minutes, and expectations only crept higher from there. With my own bowl of Udon and two others to steal from, I think I've gotten a fair share of the Futago experience. We ordered the Takoyaki and three Signatures: Uni Cream, Niku, and Kani Ankake. The Uni Cream had a wonderful, subtly sweet taste to it. The uni wasn't the best of the best, but for that price it was higher quality than you'd expect. The Niku was really good, the short ribs and tripe really absorbed the flavor of the broth. My only complaint would be the noodles, as it is not your regular thick udon noodles. I was not a fan of the Kani Ankake, probably because of the thick soup it was in. I wasn't the one who ordered it though. Overall, the udons provided for a decent meal, and I do have this lingering feeling that I did not order the best items on the menu. It was an early Saturday afternoon and customers were lining up outside the door, with their names on the waiting list, including us! After about 30 minutes, we finally landed a table in the small shop and swiftly ordered a takoyaki, Sukiyaki udon and Beef Truffle Udon. Everything was delish!! Big bowl for $15. I like how the udon here is a bit thinner than average, so it absorbs more of the broth, which is amazing. The shrimp tempura is flavorful and crunchy but a bit too salty imo, I need to dip it in the broth or eat it with the noodles to absorb the flavor. The duck is the same broth, it's pretty good if you like duck 4/5. The sukiyaki one is pretty good too 4/5. Cheese niku tastes too western for me and also too milky and creamy 3/5. But take these with a grain of salt: I haven't had those since I was in hs (2 years ago ). Honestly, my best rec is to just get a plain one. No need for fancy ingredients. I've been riding the cold udon train, and wouldn't necessarily expect the udon to go so well with the uni. A part of me was definitely concerned they just threw uni on top as an afterthought but not the case here! -MISO CARBONARA UDON (3.5/5): While this was pretty tasty at first, I couldn't imagine myself eating a whole bowl of this dish. Alright, first off, this restaurant is super cute -- from cool wall art to cute details in the napkins and chopsticks. I ordered the uni cream udon -- the priciest item on the menu. It was rich, creamy, and delicious although uni has that oceany taste that I personally love, but definitely isn't for everyone. Serving size is fulfilling as is but you also have to option to add EXTRA udon if you have a big appetite. I would definitely recommend this dish if you've got adventurous taste buds! My boyfriend prefers beef and ordered the sukiyaki udon. This was definitely more up his alley than my dish was. The dish wasn't overly salty and actually had a nice sweetness to it. However, the staff is super efficient - right before a table opened up, someone came outside to take our order. When we were seated, we shared the sweet potato tempura for an appetizer - it was super crispy and came with a nice aioli sauce.
