Fuji sushi is a small family owned sushi restaurant in downtown San Jose. I was craving sushi for dinner in a Monday and Fuji sushi was a short walk from home and was open so i decided to give it a try. Service was fast and friendly and the rolls came out very quickly and were quite good. The My way roll had the perfect balance of texture between the crispy fried eel and the spicy tuna inside and was spicy and salty and sweet thanks to the unagi sauce. This is a 5 min drive from home and is a convenient spot to go to for that reason. Parking is limited as it's downtown but there's a good parking garage close by. Inside it is small, seating is very tight, they do try to create some privacy between tables but it's crowded and usually busy. Food is very good and consistent. Been here multiple times and barely getting around to a review. The portions are good, quality is fresh and made fairly quickly. Service - not great. Not sure why but the servers are always short/come off rude and rushing us out it seems. Maybe to get the next group seated? but we kinda deal with it because the food itself is good. If you're ok with spotty service then you'll be fine for a good meal. read more

I got the crunch hamachi roll, I like eel roll, and spider roll. My favorite of the 3 was the crunch hamachi roll. Eel and soft shell crab are some of my favorite foods but those 2 rolls just weren't amazing. My issues with the spider roll was they put too much sauce on top and it was different from other spider rolls I eat. the ingredients were both hot and cold, the breading was more like a light tempura batter than a darker, crunchier breading I'm used to with soft shell crab. I also found a very small "bone" in my eel roll which is not a big deal to me since I believe they are edible. I think the flavor on the crunch hamachi roll was really good. one thing to note is the shrimp wasn't deveined. not that big of a deal to me personally since I leave the vein in when I make tempura shrimp at home, just something I'm not used to at a restaurant and I order shrimp tempura in rolls a lot. Fuji Restaurant is one of those dependable downtown spots that keeps things simple and satisfying. The fried avocado tempura is easily the highlight. It is one of those dishes you end up thinking about later and ordering again without hesitation. The bento boxes are a strong option. Good portions, a nice variety, and priced reasonably, which is not always easy to find downtown. It feels like you get a full meal without having to piece things together. They also offer Japanese curry, which is not something you see everywhere, and it is done well here. A nice change of pace from the usual menu items. Parking can be a bit of a challenge since it is in downtown, so plan a little extra time. It is a steady, reliable place that delivers on the basics and then gives you a few reasons to come back. For just two people, we ordered a lot of food. * Hamachi Sashimi Slices ($32.95) * Combo B ($85.95) -- 8pcs nigiri, 10pcs sashimi with a choice of any two specialty rolls, 2 miso soups, and 2 side salads. The sushi chefs were quick at customizing our Hamachi sashimi order, and did not mind accommodating. We arrived exactly at 11:30am so we were seated pretty quickly along with two other parties. By the time we were wrapping up, the entire restaurant was almost at capacity which tells me this is a DTSJ sushi fav? Anyway, food was good. A bit unassuming from the outside, Fuji is a great hole in the wall Japanese spot serving up authentic Japanese food in the downtown SJ area. Street parking will be your best bet here and luckily we found a spot right out front but we would believe that is not common so prepare for that. The interior feels authentic with bamboo strewn throughout and everything feels very homey and relaxed. Service is good and the place has a very local vibe despite being off one of the main streets downtown. We made reservations, which at first seemed unnecessary but while we were there it started to fill up pretty quickly. We ordered quickly and began with an appetizer of avocado tempura which was light and tasty. The mixture of the tempura crunch and buttery avocado was great and this will become our go to appetizer order when available from now on, delicious. For main courses we ordered their plain ramen and tonkatsu curry. The ramen was pretty average, hitting the spot on a rainy night in SJ with a thick, flavorful broth. The curry was out of this world, easily the best Japanese style curry we've ever had. It was hearty and warm, just an absolute monster of a dish that is the definition of a comfort dish. Fuji is just so unassuming from the outside, but it is a really good spot we think shines amongst the various restaurants and quick bites available downtown. Me and my husband have been on the hunt for a sushi spot and I think we finally found it. I apologize for not having better pictures but phone did not eat first. My husband had the sushi combo plate that came with miso, salad, 5 pieces of nigiri (chefs choice), and a tempura roll. This was the steal of the night, such a good price and so delicious! The restaurant itself is charming, with Japanese style decorations and photos of previous guests hanging on the walls. I was craving sushi the other week, and while this place "scratched the itch," nothing particularly stood out to me! We ordered the spicy edamame and I ordered the combo A (with the dragon roll) while my boyfriend ordered the chef's choice nigiri. First, the edamame was delicious! It was arguably more garlicky than spicy, but I thought these were some of the better flavored edamame I've had. The dragon roll was a pretty standard specialty roll. It was a decent serving and I liked both the shrimp tempura and sauces. I thought my nigiri and shashimi was only OK - even the toro and salmon didn't stand out, and those are normally my favorite. The whole selection didn't seem overly fresh, especially considering the general area and access to fresh fish; to be clear, the fish certainly wasn't stale, but it just didn't have a crisp, rich flavor. My boyfriend also felt that his chef's choice nigiri was just OK, which was disappointing given that we paid a little more for supposedly better options. As for service, the staff was nice, but my gripe is that our edamame, miso soup and salad all came out at the same time, followed very shortly after by our entrees. Not only did we run out of space on our table, but I felt like the staff kept coming back to clear items when we weren't done, and it was a little disruptive. Given that we picked this spot for date night, it would've been nice to spend a little more time at dinner with a more spaced out meal. Given the number of sushi places around, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back. However, this is probably a good neighborhood spot! read more

Jalapeno bomb (their version of jalapeno poppers) isn't too spicy but still has a bit of a kick. Tonkatsu curry is just okay imo - seems like they purposely added wayyy too much water so it watered down the taste of Japanese curry a bit, which already isn't heavily spiced. It wasn't too bland though. I could still taste the salt and a bit of curry spice. The dish came with plenty of carrots, onions, and either cucumber or zucchini (both of which also release a lot of water when cooked). The tonkatsu is tender but lost most of its crisp after being doused in the curry. Miso soup (tasted pretty standard) comes with this dish. We also ordered the I Like Eel roll (8 piece roll with unagi and cucumber and covered with unagi pieces and unagi sauce) which was delicious and soft! read more

Definitely solid for your bento fix go-to. Haven't been here for awhile but was back for our coworkers' birthdays last week. Not too many sushi restaurants do Bento boxes anymore and if they do it's only for lunch. (Hard for me to wrap my head around this. Took my son here for his 9th birthday because he requested to have Lion King roll for dinner. It was amazing! We got the bento box (agedashi tofu, beef teriyaki, and pork katsu) plus 3 sushi rolls - Godzilla, I Like Eel, and Lion King. The rolls were pretty standard but tasty/fresh. What stood out to us was the bento box. Pork katsu was fried perfectly with the right crunch. Agedashi tofu and the beef was both really delicious. Came with miso soup, rice, and salad. The staffs were really friendly and nice. I told one of the staffs secretly that it was my son's birthday and they prepared a really nice treat for him along with candle! Curb Parking by the restaurant was limited so it was quite a walk from the parking lot which cost $20 prepaid! Made a reservation for 4 and arrived at the specific time , so got seated pretty quick!! A bar seating by the sushi counter and few dine in tables for 2-4 made place cozy ! An outdoor patio group seating is available too! As a longtime sushi lover and Yelp Elite who's eaten my way through more rolls than I can count, I really wanted to love Fuji Sushi... but this visit landed right in the middle for me. I ordered two rolls: the Spider Roll and the Hawaiian Rainbow Roll. Spider Roll: The presentation was clean and the portion size was solid, but the flavor was just okay. The soft-shell crab was a bit on the soggy side instead of that crispy, crunchy bite you hope for. Hawaiian Rainbow Roll: This one had great potential. The fish was fresh and the colors were beautiful, but the roll itself felt slightly loose and fell apart quicker than it should've. The toppings were good, but the flavor didn't quite pop the way I expected for a specialty roll. Service was friendly and quick, and the restaurant itself is comfortable , but easy for a casual sushi night. Prices were fair for the area. Overall, Fuji Sushi is a decent spot if you're nearby, but nothing really stood out enough to make it a must-return for me. We were a party of 2, a table of 4 (2 tables) was open but they said only sushi bar available. Actually I preferred the sushi bar more because the table space is way bigger than a 2 person table. We ordered the chicken karaage for appetizer and it was alright. It was kind of cold so it seems like it had been sitting for a while. For the rolls, we ordered Happy Together, Godzilla, and Leo's Choice. Leo's choice was my least favorite, it was quite messy because it had a lot of toppings and sauce on top. If you like eating onions you should get this. Godzilla was my favorite, it has hamachi, salmon, tempura and spicy crab. Happy together was also really good, basically like a crunchy mango roll but it could have used more crunchy flakes. The Regular Assorted Sashimi was fresh and decent size. The Sunomono was good, but typical. (I opted for no tako or ebi.) The Dragon Balls were a pleasant surprise. I was expecting something like takoyaki, but it was more like a lightly deep fried stuffed mushroom x 4. This is a must whenever I come here! I am not used to a separate charge for plain, white rice. My usual spots do not charge for a bowl of rice (or hot tea, either.) Service was attractive, yet not intrusive. If you're in DTSJ, check them out. Came here on a Thursday evening as a party of three and we were seated immediately, though the shop itself isn't very large it feels super cozy and the decor is quite cute. There are plenty of options on their menu including nigiris, curry, bentos and more but my friends and I really just came here for the rolls. We ended up ordering 9 rolls and all of them were amazing. The rolls that were either fried or had a fried element (eg. fried soft shell crab) had a great light and crisp texture which was pleasant. Every roll that had fish tasted fresh with no distinct fishy flavor which was great. The hamachi was soft and buttery in texture and I particularly liked it in the Ninja roll with the smoked salmon. They have some very unique rolls here and my favorite of the night was definitely the ninja roll because I've never had smoked salmon in a roll before and the light smoked flavor was distinguishable but not overpowering, and it really gave the roll a nice deep savory flavor which is quite enjoyable. The colorful array of fish and the absolutely unique combinations were fantastic. The Godzilla roll lives up to its name! Cute, quirky little restaurant with nice sized sushi bar & big menu filled with classic Japanese dishes like katsu curry, udon or soba topped with all the traditional choices like tempura or thin slices of beef. They have 2 full pages of sushi rolls so tons of variety, both cooked & raw. I decided to have a bento with choice of 3 items, grilled mackerel, agedashi tofu & yellowtail sashimi for a $3 upgrade. My daughter ordered tempura udon, which came with one shrimp and veggie tempura like broccoli, green beans, sweet potato & eggplant. The noodles were also topped with sliced cabbage, carrots, broccoli & spinach leaves which I really appreciated. My bento had a whole filet of grilled mackerel, which most restaurants will only give you half of a filet. My slices of yellowtail sashimi were a nice thickness...not at all on the skimpy side & well worth the extra $3 up charge. My 3rd selection was agedashi tofu, also a nice portion size with 4 slices of fried tofu served in a savory broth & topped with dried bonito flakes & grated daikon radish. This was a great meal choice with good size portions for just $28.95! Service was good, actually 3 servers helped us throughout the night, all friendly & experienced.
