I didn't really know what to expect, but I was surprised by how many different kinds of poke they had. I stood there for a while trying to decide because everything looked good! I ended up getting the salmon and Hawaiian ahi tuna poke. Both were good, but looking back, I should've gotten one of the spicy mayo flavors because those looked even better. Next time, that's definitely what I'm ordering. You can get half a pound or a full pound, and you can also split your order between two flavors. We bought the poke here and got rice separately to make our own poke bowls. It ended up being much more affordable than ordering poke bowls from a restaurant, especially while visiting Hawaii. One thing to know before going: grab a number from the ticket machine when you arrive. The poke counter gets busy, and there were quite a few people waiting when we went. They'll call your number when it's your turn. Overall, this was a good and affordable stop for poke with a lot of variety. I'd come back, but next time I'm going straight for the spicy mayo!

Did a bit of impromptu shopping and got what I wanted but I also picked up the Sakeru Long Gummy. It is a gummy candy from Japan, I chose the grape flavor over the peach. The Sakeru Gummy was part of a Japanese ad campaign that had an 11 part TV series of commercials that were dramatic vignettes. It was called "Long Long Man" - watch it on youtube and thank me later...hilarious happy(?) ending. It was pretty good, as a gummy goes. Kids don't eat the Sakeru Long Gummy and don't watch the commercials. Also, there is a ruler on the back of the package - and males, don't get cocky, it is in cm's.

I saw the katsu curry and figured it was chicken, so I grabbed it without really paying attention to the label. I got back to my car, started eating, and pretty quickly realized, "Wait, this doesn't taste like chicken." Then it hit me--it was pork katsu. I have to be careful with pork because it can trigger a gout attack for me, so obviously this was not what I was hoping for. But I was hungry, had already bought it, and figured I wasn't going to return a prepared meal, so I ate it anyway. That said, the food itself was actually pretty good. My issue is more with the labeling. If something is simply called "katsu," you may not necessarily know what kind of meat you're getting. I think it would be helpful if the prepared foods were clearly labeled as chicken katsu, pork katsu, etc., because there are people who can't or don't eat certain types of meat. So overall, the katsu curry was pretty good--but buyer beware. Pay attention to exactly what you're buying, because you might not get what you assumed you were getting.

Over the year's the prices have gone through the roof and they turned it into a glorified ABC serving pantry items for on the go. A complete slap on the face for us locals trying to complete a meal. Staff looks at everyone like they are thieves and for me personally a 50 year old male being looked at like a theif is extremely uncomfortable and a complete lack of Aloha to make it so apparent. The aisles are fairly wide and while it's busy, I can usually navigate this store easily. I've always enjoyed the selection of items from the bakery section--I like coming here for just a cake slice or single piece of cheesecake sometimes. One thing that does annoy me is that some of the aisles are now locked up and need a customer service associate to come unlock the display and give you your item. When I have a choice, I will wait and go to another place that doesn't lock items up like that. I would rather the store pay more for security and loss prevention than to inconvenience shoppers and make them get customer service to unlock items. That's just me. I went to the Money Services counter, where I was told the fee to cash my check would be $8, which I was fine with. The associate tried twice to cash my check, but both attempts were denied. She told me she couldn't do the transaction and went off to lunch. I tried getting someone else to help me but he stated he was an operator not a manager. So her co-worker explained to me that it wasn't an issue with my identification. At first, I thought it might have been because the address on my passport wasn't current, so I provided another form of identification along with a piece of mail showing my name and mailing address. Unfortunately, that didn't make a difference. The associate explained that it may have been because it was my first time cashing a check of that amount at Walmart and suggested that I go directly to my bank instead. While I appreciated the associate's efforts in explaining it to me, the experience was still extremely disappointing. I had planned to use the money to buy groceries, but since I couldn't access my funds, I had to return everything I had picked out and leave empty-handed. It was a frustrating and discouraging end to an already long workday. I understand that policies and verification systems are in place for security, but I wish there had been a clearer explanation or an alternative solution to make it right with me. I was so disappointed, I just deposited the check through my own Chase mobile banking. A bank I haven't used in over a year and a half since I moved to Hawai'i. To make matters worse, the employees started discussing my situation in the corner in Tagalog as if I wasn't right there. I wish people didn't do that. Speak in another language thinking other people don't understand you. I speak Visaya, English, and Tagalog by the way. I was born in the Philippines and understand the language... It was just a very discouraging encounter. I walked out of Walmart trying not to sob because after two weeks of waiting for a paycheck, and not being able to go to the bank with my work hours, it's been incredibly difficult to have money in my pocket. I was really counting on Walmart to take care of me today. So, reluctantly, I took a picture of my check instead and deposited it through my mobile phone and now I have to wait days for it to go through. What a rough day.

One of my fondest childhood memories is going to Tamashiro Market with my dad…read more When we lived in Kalihi, this was our usual spot. And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. The reason why he chose Tamashiro over other grocery stores was simple--it was quality and because of my Nanay (grandma). His mom purchased from here and made so many delicious dishes. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display. Back then when you were allowed to sample a grape or poke to make sure it was good before buying. But more than that, it was time with him. I still remember the excitement I felt when I saw the pink building with the huge crab. I thought back then was to look at everything but now I understand that it meant something more..... something special--time with my dad. It's with a sad heart that Tamishiro Market is now closed.
