    These are so pretty

I've been looking forward to visiting the original mochi shop in Little Tokyo. Typically I would have to get the prepackaged mochi from Tokyo Central. When we arrived we were close to the front entrance, but one glance behind us and the short line extended to the sidewalk of the shop. It is so worth it to get fresh mochi. Small shop, but full of history and the love shown in the intricate details & layers of the various mochi. Will definitely go there again.

I've visited Fugetsu-Do a few times over the years. It's the oldest Japanese mochi confectionery in the U.S., established in 1903, and there's something special about walking into a place with that much history. This visit, though, felt off. I was selecting an assortment from the case, and most of the items were labeled only with Japanese names. I started asking the employee helping me what the flavors were, and she seemed visibly annoyed. She told me she couldn't go through all of them but could point out a few. That response honestly caught me off guard. If customers can't easily understand the flavors, there should at least be English descriptions available. What made it more frustrating was that the gentleman helping my friend ahead of me was warm and pleasant -- no issue there at all. Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve once we got home. Several of the mochi had a noticeable seaweed smell. My husband actually spit his out because he thought it tasted fishy. My friend noticed the same thing with hers. I respect the history and legacy of this place -- it's iconic for a reason. But customer service matters, and quality control matters.

Note: there's a $15 minimum for credit card use I was looking for a quick afternoon bite in Little Tokyo and Fugetsu-Do fit the bill perfectly. It was empty when I stopped by Thursday around 4 pm. The store is part bakery and part convenience store, as they sell lots of different Japanese candies and snacks. It was my first time here so I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the mochi options, but I asked for recommendations from the employee and ended up getting 3 mochi to try: uguisu - topped with soybean powder with red bean paste filling strawberry anko mango mochi I'm generally not a huge mochi person so I can't say I loved them, but they were pretty good for mochi. The mochi was very soft and chewy, just like it should be. I liked the first two with filling the most and was a bit disappointed the mango mochi didn't have any filling. It's a small shop with no seating. I stood on the sidewalk outside the store to try the mochi, but it would've been nice if there was at least a bench outside. Would recommend giving this place a try if you're in Little Tokyo!

This place is an institution and my love for mochi always brings me back here. We've been coming here for decades and always love stopping by when we're in the area to get a treat to enjoy while walking Little Tokyo and to take home. This last trip, we picked up a mixed dozen and everything was so soft, fresh and delicious! Our go-to's are: -Strawberry Daifuku -Strawberry Anko -Peanut Butter Mochi -Kiku Mochi -Rainbow Dango You pretty much can't go wrong with anything you get! Everyone is so nice here and we can't get enough of their yummy mochi! Lots of memories for me, my family and now our kids. Can't wait until we're back in the area again to load up on some more treats!

A small store with lines out the door that remind me of popular small businesses in Asia? Yes, sign me up. After making it through the line (~ 5 mins), my friends and I finally saw the mochi that were available. Mochi ice cream is popular, but these mochi aren't really cold. However, they did have a variety of rare flavors (eg Sakura) and the variety that I did try... all were amazing and the perfect amount of "not too sweet." They say to be be loved is to be understood, and Fugetsu-Do do really get what its visitors want! Will I be back? Yes. Will I bring cash next time? Yes. (Cash only unless $15+, and it's ~ $2 each)

If you want to try mochi in its rightful form, this is the place. This spot has been around forever and I've never actually had this many types of mochi before. I usually just grab mochi from the Asian grocery store, but this is a completely different experience. There's a big variety, and shoutout to the staff for being super patient because I had to ask what basically everything was. They were really nice about it, which I appreciated. Just a heads up, this isn't a sit-down spot. You order and go. I ordered six different pieces and the price felt reasonable for what it is. So far I've tried a few. Some are sweeter than others. The green bean one was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the rest were great. Overall, it's a unique Little Tokyo experience and definitely worth trying if you're already in the area.

This is a famous mochi establishment in LA with various mochi and sweets selection. It's in a small antique looking shop with mochi displayed behind the glass counter. The store staff helps you box the mochi you pick or you can also pick from prepackaged ones with longer expiration dates. You need to spend minimum of $15 to use credit card. I like the mango mochi, pancake wrapped mochi with a rabbit stamped on it, and sakura rice red bean flavor one. But you can't go wrong so just try whichever one your heart desires!

Hadn't been here since I lived in LA. Came on a Sunday night, and it seems a lot more popular now. The story was very busy. Prices are of course higher now, with the prepackaged boxes a little over $6 each Apart from that, seemed pretty similar to what I remember. They had my standard orders right at the entrance (chocolate and peanut butter strawberry). Being in little tokyo, parking is a little annoying. I don't think the mochi is significantly better than what you can get elsewhere, but the nice thing is that they have a fairly large variety, including some more unique items.

Long line, no easy or free parking, and nothing in the store that you can't find elsewhere like Nijiya, Mitsuwa, or Tokyo Central. The wait time is minimal even with the snaking line coming out and wrapped around the corner. Is it worth it? Maybe going once for the experience. I went because my mom really wanted to check them out and see. Like I mentioned earlier, everything sold here is easily accessible elsewhere. The 6-, 12, or 24pk pick your own anko stuffed daifuku is unique here but they don't taste particularly great or extraordinary. Just overall a very disappointing experience.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the mochi confectioneries were. Each bite is flavorful and super pretty. We also ordered a blueberry mochi which was also yummy! Highly recommend checking out this shop and ordering a few mochi sweets. :)

This is your place if you love fresh mochi! Our favorites were the fresh ichigo mochi and domyoji. We didn't are for the strawberry mochi with the little pink flower. It tasted artificial. The blueberry mochi and kuriman (chestnut with bean filling) were ok. We bought a 6 pack and returned to buy another 6 pack of the fresh ichigo mochi. Have cash since there's a minimum spend of $15 to use a credit card, which is understandable. Support this local business that's been around for over 100 years!!!

The best Japanese sweets spot you can get! The line could get really long during peak times but everything is so worth it. They offer different sizes of boxes and you can customize your own selections into each box. My all-time favorite is the strawberry with red bean paste. Do be mindful they have a minimum $15 for credit cards.

my go to spot for authentic japanese mochi. this spot is a staple in lil tokyo and i love to support them whenever i'm in the area or when i'm in need of a delicious gift for a friend or elder haha the store is modest and old school. the customer service is attentive and patient so it may take some time if there's a line. they don't rush their customers. their mochi is soft and delicate. my current fave is the blueberry square with no filling.

    Ask the Community - Fugetsu-Do

For Fugetsu-Do Bakery, where is the best place to park? Do they validate?

They only have street parking. However there is a parking structure near Little Tokyo village but they don't validate parking for Fugetsu Do. They only validate for businesses inside the Village.

Does the store happen to sell any Baumkuchen/Tree Cake? or is this just a Mochi place?

It is a traditional manju and mochi place and does not have cakes.

Can I buy mochi bits at the store?

    Yes, of course.

What are the mix and match flavors that run out first? I see strawberry. And chocolate. And what else?

They have mango, red bean, blueberry...

Is there any cream filled mochi? if so, which ones?

I don't believe so. Most of the filled Mochi were with red bean paste or other flavors, but not cream

Is there any specific mochi that is made without artificial flavors and artificial colors? If so, which one(s)? I really want to try their mochi but I'm allergic to artificial ingredients... Only all-natural ingredients will do!

You would try daifuku, white mochi and red bean paste inside. Anything colorful ones have artificial fruit flavor.

Do you still have any sakura mochi?

Sakura mochi is a seasonal offering prepared to coincide with the blossoming sakura 🌸 which is often mid-March to late April. You can check out seasonal offerings on the Fugetsu-do website 😉

    How to store the mochi?

some of our products have different shelf lives. but in general, they should be stored at room temp.… Read more

Exactly what days and times are the strawberry daifuku available?

Probably more earlier in the day as it sells out later on.

Hi I have a nut alllergy and have been having your Mochi since I was a small child but I noticed recently you that you now have peanut butter Mochi - is all your Mochi made on same equipment as peanut butter ones even the suama etc? Thx

There is a potential for exposure as the same equipment is used.

    Are they gluten free?

    Yes!

    Any vegan options?

I went last week and was told that the top row were all vegan. I bought three mochi. Just now I saw a video on YouTube https://youtu.be/2i8jqG6Hx0M that shows two of the mochi I bought having gelatin poured over them. I am fuming!!!

What are the must try's for new & old mochi lovers?

For a nutty and old school mochi, I like the Kinako daifuku. The strawberry daifuku is also a great new meets old mochi. I also like the peanut butter mochi too.

Is it still the price indicated per box if you get assorted/the fruit flavored ones? Does it make it extra?

Yea or you can buy your Mochi piece by piece and the price is on the box!

Does the Mochi typically sell out quickly?

I went at 4:45pm on Hinamatsuri and they still had quite a bit of choices, but I did not see the fresh strawberry mochi or the packs of peanut butter and chocolate mochi.

Can you call in an order and do curbside pickup?

You can call in an order but no curbside pickup!

    Do you have curbside pickup?

    No, they do not

    Are there any vegan options?

almost all of the mochi are vegan friendly.

Still open during stay at home order? What are hours now? Can I still go into shop to browse since I would not know what to order without seeing?

Yes! Monday-Sunday 8a-5p. Can still go into the store but must maintain proper distancing and wear a mask.

Is it vegan and dairy free?

not sure about dairy-free but the mochi are vegan-friendly and gluten-free except for a few exceptions such as the pancake looking ones which are on the bottom rowss.

It has such a selection of candy from your childhood, and for kids, random unique gifts to keep them busy. but yesterday...all that flew out the window. I approached the sandwich counter and asked the person working (an angry woman apparently) what her favorite sandwiches are. After she took a minute to complain about how she had been making sandwiches all day and her brain is fried and she didn't really have any recommendations for me (and was seemingly annoyed at me even asking) she looked at the clock and advised that I was 2 minutes too late to order a hot sandwich. literally the 2 minutes she took to complain about her job cost me the sandwich. now, if it was my shop and a nice family came in and asked me my opinion on something and I took a minute or two to say the things that she said I would give them a sandwich and make that sandwich be the last sandwich of the day, but instead apparently my money wasn't green enough for her. She shut it down and two minutes later was out the door. she was rude, and honestly it just seemed that she didn't give an F.
