Strawberry mochi w bean filling, blueberry mochi, matcha mochi with bean filling, mango mochi

Obsessed with their mochi!! I love the chocolate mochi and the fruit flavored mochi. I'm not the biggest fan of the bean paste filled mochi, but I do love how cute and pretty they all look. Coming to this location is nice to see all the different kinds of mochi they have, but it's not as convenient for me to go to LA. So whenever I'm at Tokyo Central or any other market that sells Fugetsu-Do's mochi I try to grab a box :)

Had this place bookmarked for a while as I've heard about the legacy of this fresh mochi store and finally had the time to try it! When I had arrived on a Sunday afternoon, the line was out the door and had to wait ~10 minutes. Decided to get the 6-pack option which was still $3.50/mochi. I ordered the following flavors: strawberry Anko, ichigo daifuku, rainbow dango, green tea, uguisu, and shigure. The mochi exterior itself was so soft, definitely reminded me of the ones I had in Japan. Personally, I liked the green tea filling more than the red bean but they were all really delicious and not too sweet! The price is a bit steep for just (1) but I definitely see the hype about this place. Overall, really solid mochi spot if you're looking for some when you're in Little Tokyo area. ** please note: credit card use requires minimum of $15 purchase before tax**

Omg I've been meaning to go to Fugetsu-Do since forever and finally made it out to Little Tokyo. The shop itself is pretty small and has the traditional mom & pop feel to it, and everyone was very friendly. Shoutout to the girl working that Saturday who answered all my questions about the different filled mochi flavors. They have a pretty decent assortment of Japanese snacks and candies, but of course come for the freshly made mochi. The texture is soooo soft and chewy unlikely the weird powdery texture of many other store bought mochi. My favorite was definitely the ichigo daifuku, although I do wish it came with a whole strawberry instead of just a small piece because the bite with strawberry was AMAZING. Second favorite is the peanut butter mochi and... I've already gone back just for those. They also sell plain komochi that you can eat fresh the same day or freeze and use later for cooking. Annnd I got some kinako mochi last weekend cause I keep going back lol.

Great Little Spot in Little Tokyo for historic mochi and sweets! My brother and I walked in and it was very cool to see a place that's been around for so long. There's lots of options to choose from and the mochi was very fresh. Cons: $20 minimum for card use so bring cash!

The best mochi in LA! There is a reason they've been around for so long. My favorite is the mango.

This place has been bookmarked for a while now and I was happy that I got to finally give this place a try when I was visiting Little Tokyo. I ordered the kinako mochi, strawberry anko, and ichigo daifuku. I loved that everything was not overly sweet. Everything was fresh and super yummy. I ate the kinako mochi the next day and it was still soft. The nutty powder is my fave. I went on a Friday around lunch time and luckily there wasn't a wait. Service was quick and friendly. It's a cute little store that has the feel of really being in Tokyo with its history of being opened since 1903. Definitely worth a stop by.

I've been meaning to try Fugetsu-Do for the longest time. We ordered a few of their mochis to try: the green tea, pink, daifuku, kiku and the sudare. All of them were delicious and weren't too sweet either! The pink, kiku and sudare all used the same filling: the white bean paste. Our favorites were the green tea and the daifuku. The green tea in the green tea paste was strong and the red bean paste used in the daifuku was smooth and not too sweet either. This place is super popular and there was a line on a Wednesday afternoon. Service was excellent. The workers there advised to eat the daifuku within a day. The shop is on the smaller end and looked pretty old. Would definitely recommend!

My family and I went to Fugetsu-do on a weekend morning after we shopped at the Little Tokyo Mall in LA. It was pretty quiet when we were there so we could take our time looking around and selecting different kinds of treats. We decided to get a bunch of their mochi to take back to Vegas, and they were all super fresh and good. They have soft and chewy textures and many flavors at Fugetsu-do, and everything we tried met those expectations. Whether you go with traditional red bean or the ones that are filled with fruits, each has a great sweet taste, and a perfect texture. The store itself has that old fashioned and quaint look! It had a small counter area to display the different kinds of mochi. It's really the kind of store you'd like to spend time deciding what flavor to buy. Also, the service was great by the team members which added to how much I enjoyed my visit! Fugetsu-Do is a place to go when you're in Little Tokyo and you have a taste for mochi or just Japanese desserts. A good place to stop by and get a few to eat right there and then or to take back home as gifts to people you know!

Best mochi in the entire LA county! My daughter and I love their peanut butter mochi the most. Before dinner, boy, there was a looong line so we decided to go back after dinner but they closed the register already after we walked out, the guy that was working that came out of the store and looked for us and offered us free mochi you guys don't know how much you've made our day, especially my daughter's! She was not a meat eater when she was a toddler and you guys' peanut butter mochi provided some of the protein in her diet. It always feels so nostalgic walking into the store, same yummy mochi and warm people all these years.

This mochi store has been open for 123 years, and I got so curious that I ended up reading about its history on their website. It's amazing to see such a historical shop still thriving, and I really admire how each generation continues the tradition with so much care. The mochi here is incredibly fresh and comes in many different flavors. My personal favorites were the red bean and blueberry mochi -- both were soft, chewy, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. The price is also very affordable, around $2 per piece, which makes it easy to try several flavors at once. I'll definitely come back next time to try the plain mochi!

So good!!!! Short line when we visited on Saturday around 1pm. Credit card for purchases above $15, otherwise cash only (not a problem, just buy more obviously). I chose a variety of filled mochi (enjoyed the mung bean filling), but the plain mochi with no filling (pink, green, white) was kinda superior. Just great flavor, amazing texture, and no filling in the way. For the filled mochi w a glaze, def eat within 2-3 days (mine got little speckles of mold very sad). A must when in Little Tokyo.

For historical purposes, it's worth a visit as they've been making mochi since the early 1900s. Select individual flavors or purchase a prefilled variety box. I tried the variety box, but really only enjoyed the blueberry (best) and strawberry filled flavors. That being said, the texture was fantastic and this felt like quality mochi. Fun to try.

I've visited Fugetsu-Do a few times over the years. It's the oldest Japanese mochi confectionery in the U.S., established in 1903, and there's something special about walking into a place with that much history. This visit, though, felt off. I was selecting an assortment from the case, and most of the items were labeled only with Japanese names. I started asking the employee helping me what the flavors were, and she seemed visibly annoyed. She told me she couldn't go through all of them but could point out a few. That response honestly caught me off guard. If customers can't easily understand the flavors, there should at least be English descriptions available. What made it more frustrating was that the gentleman helping my friend ahead of me was warm and pleasant -- no issue there at all. Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve once we got home. Several of the mochi had a noticeable seaweed smell. My husband actually spit his out because he thought it tasted fishy. My friend noticed the same thing with hers. I respect the history and legacy of this place -- it's iconic for a reason. But customer service matters, and quality control matters.

For Fugetsu-Do Bakery, where is the best place to park? Do they validate?

They only have street parking. However there is a parking structure near Little Tokyo village but they don't validate parking for Fugetsu Do. They only validate for businesses inside the Village.

Does the store happen to sell any Baumkuchen/Tree Cake? or is this just a Mochi place?

It is a traditional manju and mochi place and does not have cakes.

Can I buy mochi bits at the store?

    Yes, of course.

What are the mix and match flavors that run out first? I see strawberry. And chocolate. And what else?

They have mango, red bean, blueberry...

Is there any cream filled mochi? if so, which ones?

I don't believe so. Most of the filled Mochi were with red bean paste or other flavors, but not cream

Is there any specific mochi that is made without artificial flavors and artificial colors? If so, which one(s)? I really want to try their mochi but I'm allergic to artificial ingredients... Only all-natural ingredients will do!

You would try daifuku, white mochi and red bean paste inside. Anything colorful ones have artificial fruit flavor.

Do you still have any sakura mochi?

Sakura mochi is a seasonal offering prepared to coincide with the blossoming sakura 🌸 which is often mid-March to late April. You can check out seasonal offerings on the Fugetsu-do website 😉

    How to store the mochi?

some of our products have different shelf lives. but in general, they should be stored at room temp.… Read more

Exactly what days and times are the strawberry daifuku available?

Probably more earlier in the day as it sells out later on.

Hi I have a nut alllergy and have been having your Mochi since I was a small child but I noticed recently you that you now have peanut butter Mochi - is all your Mochi made on same equipment as peanut butter ones even the suama etc? Thx

There is a potential for exposure as the same equipment is used.

    Are they gluten free?

    Yes!

    Any vegan options?

I went last week and was told that the top row were all vegan. I bought three mochi. Just now I saw a video on YouTube https://youtu.be/2i8jqG6Hx0M that shows two of the mochi I bought having gelatin poured over them. I am fuming!!!

What are the must try's for new & old mochi lovers?

For a nutty and old school mochi, I like the Kinako daifuku. The strawberry daifuku is also a great new meets old mochi. I also like the peanut butter mochi too.

Is it still the price indicated per box if you get assorted/the fruit flavored ones? Does it make it extra?

Yea or you can buy your Mochi piece by piece and the price is on the box!

Does the Mochi typically sell out quickly?

I went at 4:45pm on Hinamatsuri and they still had quite a bit of choices, but I did not see the fresh strawberry mochi or the packs of peanut butter and chocolate mochi.

Can you call in an order and do curbside pickup?

You can call in an order but no curbside pickup!

    Do you have curbside pickup?

    No, they do not

    Are there any vegan options?

almost all of the mochi are vegan friendly.

Still open during stay at home order? What are hours now? Can I still go into shop to browse since I would not know what to order without seeing?

Yes! Monday-Sunday 8a-5p. Can still go into the store but must maintain proper distancing and wear a mask.

Is it vegan and dairy free?

not sure about dairy-free but the mochi are vegan-friendly and gluten-free except for a few exceptions such as the pancake looking ones which are on the bottom rowss.

When they had penny candy machines, a big taxidermy deer head and the kindest owner. He once gave me and my sibling a big paper lunch bag full of candies! It has such a selection of candy from your childhood, and for kids, random unique gifts to keep them busy. but yesterday...all that flew out the window. I approached the sandwich counter and asked the person working (an angry woman apparently) what her favorite sandwiches are. After she took a minute to complain about how she had been making sandwiches all day and her brain is fried and she didn't really have any recommendations for me (and was seemingly annoyed at me even asking) she looked at the clock and advised that I was 2 minutes too late to order a hot sandwich. literally the 2 minutes she took to complain about her job cost me the sandwich. now, if it was my shop and a nice family came in and asked me my opinion on something and I took a minute or two to say the things that she said I would give them a sandwich and make that sandwich be the last sandwich of the day, but instead apparently my money wasn't green enough for her. She shut it down and two minutes later was out the door. she was rude, and honestly it just seemed that she didn't give an F. Today I called the store to speak with the owner and the person who answered the phone gave me the runaround. it was clear that either the workers didn't want to connect me with the owner or the owner doesn't want to hear the complaint. this place has gone downhill.
