We went for dinner and should have suspected it might not be a great option based on the emptiness of the restaurant at 7 pm on a Saturday night. We ordered drinks-cherry limeade mojito and Paloma. The drinks were really terrible. There was no citrus taste or really taste at all-just bitterness and water. I asked to exchange my drink for a margarita and was told the first drink could not be comped which was surprising. The margarita was slightly better, but I would not come here for the cocktails. We ordered chips and the house made salsa. The salsa was great, but the chips were Tostitos! My pork Barbacoa was awesome and it came with amazing corn tortillas. Hubby's burger was nothing special. The space is really beautiful and our server was so nice. I would not come back, though, based on the other options available in the same area. read more

Bonnie and I went here for lunch today. But for two things, I would have given them five stars--but I'll detail those at the end of the review so I can rave about the great things first! This is exactly the kind of business the Choo Choo needs to draw in more tourists and locals. This was my first time and when I saw that they have bagels and that breakfast is on the menu until 5 pm, well, the die was cast. I ordered the Farm Breakfast and substituted a sesame bagel for the toast, also opting for my eggs to be scrambled and I chose the sausage. The bagel was wonderful, the eggs were done perfectly, and the sausage was a joy (I think they must grind their own, it was that good and not to be missed). And the herb roasted potatoes were quite tasty. The wait staff was top-notch--quick to serve, helpful, and attentive. Being as this restaurant occupies a main portion of the Choo Choo, the restaurant is in a large open area and casually upscale in design. Very millennial-friendly, I think. The two things which detracted from the experience were: 1. While we were eating, there was some construction work which involved drilling into the bar/counter. Because this was a large open space, the sound was quite loud and even drifted out into the main Choo Choo lobby area. We saw one couple come in through that entrance and they plainly left because of the noise; it only stands to reason that others coming from that direction might similarly decide to lunch elsewhere. 2. We came in through the main lobby through that same side entrance. I stumbled over the raised track for their accordion doors. Then as we were eating, I saw roughly 75% of incoming customers (and one employee) do exactly the same. No one actually fell except for a four-year-old, and they're close to the ground anyway, so no worries. I don't recall seeing a warning sign about that and they clearly need one. read more

I missed stopping here while I was in Nashville but was delighted to find one during my stop in Chattanooga on a Sunday morning. There is ample, open seating and a vast menu to choose from. We sat at the bar and weren't impressed with the service as it took over an hour to get everything we ordered. However, if you're having a slow Sunday, this is your place but if you have anything planned, make room for extra time. A busy place is often times not a bad sign at all! I highly recommend everything we ordered - loaded biscuits & gravy, mountain tea and a golden milk latte with a shot of espresso. Frothy Monkey is a must try, wherever you find one! read more

Very cool coffee shop. Nice atmosphere, usually plenty of room to sit. Service is typically really good considering how busy they always seem to be. Food is really quite good and the drinks are too. My big complaints are how glaringly loud the music is. A lot of people go to study and it pretty much is impossible. Most of the people sitting around us have to practically yell to hear each other. Also it would be great if they organized the line better. Everyone crams together in the front door, maybe just make a simple ropes off section so you wind the line away from the entrance a bit. Most times it's frigid too. I like A/C, but I have to bring a jacket to hang out for more than twenty minutes. read more

Very disappointed with this restaurant. We stopped here while traveling and ended up wasting 2 1/2 hours! Wait staff was super slow. The kitchen took way too long to prepare our food. The waiter apologized. My pancakes were burned on one side. The syrup was like water. It took forever to get drink refills. Food is DELICIOUS! We were driving through Chattanooga on our way back to Atlanta and when we found this place, we truly found a gem. It's in an old train station, so the historical character inside, is really cool. I never expected to have such yummy food at a coffee shop. The ambiance is awesome, the food ranges from solid to delicious, staff is great, and the coffee is on point. I'll address all four below: - Ambiance: the building is beautiful inside and out, while downstairs stays pretty clean, they continuously neglect upstairs which is otherwise a neat place to study and hangout. My last four attempts to eat upstairs led me to un-swept floors, old food, and cups left for hours unattended. - Food: Frothy Monkey seems to have high quality ingredients, but the fall short on seasoning and flavor, and tend to charge $1-$2 more than other high-end Chattanooga places. Amp up the seasoning and drop prices a dollar or two and you have something special. - Staff: Minus some fear to check upstairs, the staff members that run around the most seem to be the best, and seem to be active in filling up water and checking on our needs (even as we get lost in our work w/ headphones on). - Coffee: I typically don't like coffee, I'm more of an energy drink person, however this place has converted me and now I hope to build up my coffee IQ. Seriously, this place is awesome, but after four attempts to eat upstairs and finding old food and drinks still out from hours ago is disturbing. Got off work early one day and decided to go get a coffee at frothy monkey. I sat at the bar and ordered a monkey mocha- the best coffee I've ever had! My server, Alex, was extremely helpful and recommended a delicious salmon bagel followed by a house made snickerdoodle (the fluffiest cookie I've ever had). I cannot express enough how accommodating and kind Alex was about my allergies and preferences. He was extremely helpful and I felt like he paid attention, even though he had several other bar guests. My drink never went empty. I will be returning often! read more

I love this place. I ate breakfast there 3 weekends ago. Marlin was my server at the counter. She was so sweet, positive, and welcoming. Then last weekend Micha was my server, and he was just as kind, welcoming and positive. This week, Fletcher helped me at the counter was just as nice, low key, and helpful. Later I talked with William the GM and commended him. It's obvious that the employees are happy there, and they make their work seem effortless. The most inexperienced bar tender I've ever had.. and she shows it. And we did have to ask - for a server to take our order (we got our own menus), for refills on water (everyone else had a fresh carafe), for the eggs and avocado we requested with our food, for silverware to eat said food, and finally for our checks. Good coffee and tea. Great coffee place to sit and study but that's the only reason I'd go. They make their specialty coffee drinks on the sweeter side which is always a good excuse to get an extra shot of espresso. They are one of the few places that you can get good coffee past 4pm though. Which is very important. Food is disappointingly average. Not worth the price for dinner. Sandwiches come with chips and salsa, which is weird to me but everyone else seems to like. The pastries are usually really good. They used to have a lemon pound cake which was the best thing they sold! Since covid they've been doing a good job with togos however, I got the baked pimiento cheese and I understand cheese gets oily when baked but when I opened my food it was 70% oil with a tiny bit of cheese floating around. Looks like something I'd never want to put in my body to be honest. The bakery pretzel bites it comes with were very dry. Change your recipe or don't make this available for togo! I visited Frothy Monkey last week, and I'll be honest...as I ate my food I was pretty certain I was going to give it a 2 star review. I decided to wait a few days and give it some thought and ended up choosing to go with three...here was my experience: I was getting my car serviced nearby, and it was going to take a while, so the service guy recommended this place and offered to drop me off and pick me up later. I was hungry, so I took him up on the offer. Aesthetically, the place is very cool. It's really large and open with lots of seating options. There is a lot of exposed brick, and you definitely get that old train station vibe (as it's located inside the Chattanooga Choo Choo). After taking a look at the menu I decided on the Betsy, which is a white meat chicken salad (made with cranberries, celery, Dijon, and maple), lettuce and tomato served on toasted sourdough. I paid extra for roasted potatoes as my side. I was very excited about this sandwich. I consider myself a chicken salad connoisseur. I've had the good, the bad, and the ugly of chicken salads, as I try it often if I see it on a menu. This may have been one of the worst chicken salad sandwiches I've ever had. In a word, it was GROSS. The chicken salad was terribly dry, and the maple flavor did not suit the sandwich AT ALL; it was a far too overwhelming flavor. Between toasted sourdough (dry also but would've been fine with a less dry chicken salad) and the dry contents of the sandwich...it was awful. I only ate half, which is not normal for me if I'm paying for food in a restaurant. The roasted potatoes were ok but tasted as if they weren't seasoned at all. I had to add a lot of salt and pepper; they simply tasted like a cooked bland potato. So after that you're probably wondering why I didn't just give it the original 2 star rating I had in mind. I only had one thing on the menu. Maybe I just chose the one bad thing? Maybe it was an off day? Maybe if I ever go back (though I would never choose to myself, but I would go if a friend wanted to), I'll try something else and love it? I really don't get the love for this place. I have had some OK meals but never a superlative one. The coffee is, um, not good. It's pretty sour and we've tried it several times based on reviews. We've had muffins but they were always a little dry; we've never really hit on a menu item that we just fell in love with. Just OK. Not terrible; not great. On the plus side, there's a great ambiance in the choo choo, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. But the menu really needs help and interest, and the execution could be better. Brian was our bartender and he was awesome! He was busy but he kept my granddaughter entertained and fixed me my now favorite Bloody Mary in town. I've been here a few times, I really wanted to love this place so I wanted to give another opportunity. The first visit was with 2 of my frieds that were visiting from another country, we sat at the bar and it was hard to ger the bartender attention, service was really poor. Coffee was cold. The second time I went with my mom for 'tea time' we had a cinnamon roll that was a little chewy, a delicious brownie and 2 cups of room temperature latte. Again pretty disappointing. If you need something is hard to tell who works there or not, they don't have a name tag or an apron or something visible for you to identify them. Last time I visited with my mom and husband, if service was poor before, I don't even have words to describe it this time. They had no menus in the stands, so the 3 of us shared one. People that arrived after us had no menu to look at. The line was long, there was only 1 cashier, it took about 30 mins to get to place our order. Since I had the experiences with the cold coffee I asked to make sure the lattes this time were extra hot. Well they came to the table room temperature again and nobody comes to your table to check on your food. We ordered 3 breakfast plates, farmers breakfast which was very good, the food presentation was on point so was the flavor. Loaded biscuits and gravy really good as well it was a large portion and very fresh. I got the adult grilled cheese which was also delicious, the avocado was pretty dark but I know its because of the temperature of the sandwich. I had to go to the food bar for salt, pepper, napkins and silverware. So food was pretty good service was awful, they also gave us 2 glasses of water when it was 3 of us sitting on the table, I was able to chug my 12oz coffee it was not hot. I won't be coming back. I would not recommend this place because good food you can find in many places. Service is what makes the whole experience enjoyable. read more

Ordered the parfait and 2 other breakfast items along with our coffee. MMMM. So good. Great place to sit around and chat before you head towards downtown. Our second time, we stopped by to grab coffee in the last afternoon. After we placed our order, we noticed the guests that came AFTER us (also TO-GO orders) received their coffee and pastries BEFORE us. It wasn't just one guest...it was multiple guest. (Yes, we stood there long enough to notice.) You can only imagine how irked I became. I asked the barista if I had missed my order and she reassured me I was not missed, but I had 2 more orders ahead of me. TWO??? HOW WAS THAT POSSIBLE?!? I bet you're wondering if I ever got my coffee. Yes, yes I did eventually. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe my ticket got shuffled to the end of the pile. Ok, please let's discuss. My man is basically allergic to a certain kind of restaurant - and he thought Frothy Monkey would give him fits. But nooooo. How wrong he was. We had breakfast. First, the coffee. Yes, yes, yes. It was perfect. He went with the Farm Breakfast and was forced to eat his words of protest right along with the (perfectly prepared) bacon and eggs. I had the California - FM's take on the much-maligned avocado toast. Everything on that plate was optimal: the bread - crusty, chewy, delicious -, the avocado - just ripe -, the eggs, the sprouts SO GOOD. Service is friendly, prompt, and unobtrusive. Located inside the famous Choo Choo Hotel, FM may not be exactly what you'd expect in that setting, but I promise it's awesome. read more

I hate to give low rated reviews based on a single visit. A couple of things to keep in mind for this one. #1 we aren't from the area. #2 we were looking for a place for dinner, which I admit up front, this is more of a cafe. #3 I will make excuses because I understand how HARD customer service jobs can be when dealing with the public. I could be off on my impression based on our visit. Ok, now.... we got there and were sat relatively quickly. We were asked about drinks in reasonable time. My wife ordered a cold brew and I got a hot drink. After looking over the menu, we decided on just drinks.... I got my coffee a few minutes after letting our server know we would just be doing drinks. We then ended up sharing my drink as we waited. We ended up finishing my drink. I then excused myself and went across the way to use the bathrooms.... came back... still no coffee. We waited all told what had to be at least 30 minutes for her coffee. Quite frankly I think it was forgotten and then later realized when they saw we were still there. But your main draw is pretentious coffee drinks, sooooooo shouldn't you nail that? It was good once we got it, but we ended up drinking it on the way to our actual dinner spot which made up for it. I'm rooting for them and sincerely hope our experience was a one of a kind snafu and not business as usual. read more

With the exception a few, the staff isn't very friendly and I've had so many orders go wrong or missing. Great food, location and service. We found parking to be easy on the weekend for breakfast at 8 am. There were a few in line ahead of us at the counter but that went very fast. They had cool monkey placards as your number placement to take back to your table. The food came out relatively quick. Their entire staff seemed very positive and wanted to ensure a great experience. Very cool. The toast comes with a jam that I think was strawberry rhubarb perhaps? It tasted like grandma's on the farm, so that's winning. The bacon was just the right thickness and had a crisp audible snap to it. Perfectly made. The biscuits and gravy were just right as well although very large. You can have them custom make an omlette and mine was perfection. Fluffy eggs and fresh ingredients. The coffee? Just okay in my opinion. I just do black coffee so I'm good with bland flavor, but this was flavor less. I had expected more. Perhaps I should've tried something unique and the experience may have been different. We really enjoyed touring around the old train station area. We could have spent a lot more time here. We will certainly put it on a future itinerary. The location turns this up to a 6. So with the coffee bringing it back to a 5, these folks are doing great! read more
